Anti-Gun Overreaction, Part 2
Well, it appears we have another installment in the never-ending saga of “stupid overreaction tricks” concerning guns. This one comes to us courtesy of a school in Arizona.
Poston Butte High School in Florence, AZ, issues its students laptop computers. Since these are school property, the school mandates that they not be used for “sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures.” Students also cannot send, create, forward, or access pictures that are “harassing, threatening, or illegal.”
This policy recently got a young man in trouble. A freshman student downloaded the picture of an AK-47 lying on what appears to be the flag of the Former Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. He liked the picture and made that his Windows wallpaper background.
That’s it. No depiction of shooting, no threatening or obscene message, no picture of anyone getting shot or shot at, no “blood and guts”. Just a photo of a static display consisting of a former Communist state’s flag with the iconic weapon of the Soviet era lying on it.
A teacher saw the “scary photo” – and turned the youngster in. The school initially suspended the young man for 3 days for violating “school policy” regarding laptop use for using the photo as his Windows wallpaper. When pressed, they later shortened his suspension to one day.

It isn’t just there, Hondo, it’s in every school in the country and every Statehouse and Capitol, especially DC. We hire idiots to educate us and to represent us.
Apparently they care nothing for either the First or Second Amendments.
And what is our curent administration doing to address this problem?

It’s not just that school, but pretty much all of them. In Pennsylvania a 5 year old girl was suspended for 10 days for making “terroristic threats”. Her heinous crime you ask, was for telling another student she was going to shoot her with her hello kitty bubble gun.

These would be the same kind of officials who recently suspended a 6 year old kindergartener for sexual harassment for quoting the LFMAO song, “I’m sexy and I know it”….
Instead of telling the kid to stop it, some idiot used the sexual harassment policy to suspend him for 3 days. As the person in the article points out that sometimes zero tolerance also means a zero sense policy. Or the 5 year old who made a LEGO gun at school being threatened with suspension.
Common sense has long since left the building. Unfortunately the replacement appears to be paranoid hysteria. Clearly we need to be aware of behaviors that are indicators of illness or dangerous, and no doubt if the kid in question had come to school with an AK after displaying it on his screen for months there would be questions as to why it wasn’t reported. But once again that’s what the grownups are supposed to do, talk about and resolve an issue, not respond with blanket suspensions that don’t address anything.
But that’s what we do as a nation, we just put a bandaid on things without actually identifying or repairing the underlying cause of the problem.

Wow. My school folders frequently featured stick figures actually shooting guns. Sometimes even at eachother. They’d probably have me attending the elementary school at the insane asylum if I were a kid today.
Back then schools were different. They had shooting clubs and rules governing the maximum size of the pocket knives we were allowed to carry. Let’s not pretend that was all that long ago either, it was only about 15 years back.
My father went to high school in the Phoenix area (granted, was nearly 50 years ago, but still) and he would tell me about kids having guns IN THEIR CARS (horror!) for going shooting after school.
Then again, I knew that, because we did the same thing when I went to high school. Only shooting I recall from my HS days is when my former Vice Principal became Gallup HS principal, and one day walked into the McKinley Schools Superintendent office and put six into his chest. He’s doing life at Santa Fe now….

It’s just stupid how much overreaction there is all because of the scary rifles. Remember, all firearms are dangerous, so we can’t have any child educated about them except by their video games and television.
These idiots are not solving the problem, they are creating it.
Morons also protested the Sandy Hook kids standing near the Honor Guard at the Super Bowl yesterday. Apparently, just the sight of weapons, even in the hands of those who swear to protect, shouldn’t be allowed.
I’m really beginning to think that the best solution is two separate countries. One for those who believe is the Constitution and the grand experiment as envisioned by our Founding Fathers, and another for the people who want to mimic the UK. We would need a very tall and solid wall between the two.

This is all part of the vast left-wing conspiracy. Banish any images of firearms from school facilities, as they pose a threat, even those that are two dimensional images. Has anyone noticed that the rank insignia of Marine Corps L/Cpl’s (E-3) through MSgt (E-7) have crossed rifles? So, by default, Marine Corps recruiters will not be allowed on campus. As for the other recruiters, I am sure quite a few of their brochures have photographs of recruits marching with long black thunder-sticks. You can’t bring those brochures on campus. Marksmanship badges? Although they do not display the image of a weapon, they are related to weapons, so they need to go also. Will they be purging the history books of any photographs containing firearms? Marines raising the flag at Mt. Suribachi? It has to go, they have rifles in that photograph. Burning ships at Pearl Harbor? Nope, there are machine guns on those doomed ships. A painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas Eve? Don’t even think about it.

Seriously, though, would military uniforms that have a firearm image be prohibeted from school campuses? You know some lefties are salivating over that potential.
Well, how are they going to prohibit those if the kids are in JROTC?
What would be the excuse? That the insignia promotes violence? Then why allow the JROTC program on campus in the first place? For some kids in cities like Chicago, it gives them an opportunity to go to college that they otherwise would never have.
Don’t laugh, PH2–when I was recruiting in LA back in the late 90’s, most of the few schools which still allowed JROTC wouldn’t allow them to drill with non-functional weapons, like the plugged up M-1’s we used in boot camp.
Ex-PH2: simple. They’ll just drop JROTC. After all:

Friend of mine does living history demonstrations, and schools are normally one of his favorite venues. His time period is 1740 – 1840. He was invited to do a demonstration at a local school by a teacher, and accepted. Then he received the list in the mail of all the items he could NOT bring for the demonstration.
No kind of gun, firing or non-firing.
No kind of blade, either weapon or utensil.
No kind of sharp personal item, such as razors or needles.
No kind of flammable material. This included lamps and candles.
The list went on and on, literally, a whole typed page. My friend ended up cancelling the demonstration. A sad post script on that was this: when he called to ask questions about the list and explain that it prohibited almost everthing he wanted to bring for the class, the teacher told him, “Well, you can always bring pictures of those items.”

Well, I hope that JROTC is not dropped. It does lead kids in a positive direction, despite what the ever-fearful left thinks.
The kids on the SouthSide Drill Team who marched in the inaugural parade were using dummy weapons — wood mockups with straps — as part of their drill, and no one went bananas about it.
PintoNag, I guess the teacher didn’t get the memo, as it seems you can’t even have photographs of them anymore.
PN, do they teach home ec classes like sewing and cooking at that school? Those require kitchen knives, and pins and needles.
@27 This was about ten or twelve years ago, and to be fair, most of the schools that invited him didn’t have a problem with his items. They did ask that small items be put into locked cases, but it was so they wouldn’t get stolen by sticky-fingered urchins, not to prevent injuries.
@28 I don’t know the answer to that. It was a Junior High, so presumably they do have those kind of classes. My best guess is that they weren’t willing to accept liability for items brought in from outside.
Thanks, PN. I was beginning to wonder if it really has gone that far, but yes, the school’s liability coverage probably does not extend to that kind of thing.

If you send your child to school – any school, either public or private – you have to accept them to live under a “my house, my rules” policy while participating in any school activity. If you can’t live with that, and you can’t find a school that has rules you want your kids suffering under, you just need to home school.
I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but there’s no way in hell I’d accept a school supplied laptop for my kids, knowing full well that accepting it would mean accepting that as long as my kids had them the school’s rules would extend to anything done on that computer in my home. If you have kids who need a computer for school and you can’t afford one, I’d suggest cutting off your cable TV for a few months until you can scrape together the money to spare yourself being under the school’s thumb any time your kids need to use a computer.
One other thing to consider – a lot of gun rights activists have been focusing on how the problem isn’t guns, it’s insane people getting guns. Who do you think is going to get to make the determination of what qualifies as crazy? It’s a safe bet it’s not going to be people who think that we’re supposed to be living in a constitutional republic under a limited government. More likely, it’s going to be people who think that wanting a picture of an AK as your wallpaper means you probably have something wrong with you and should be strongly encouraged by the government to seek professional help.
