For an Otherwise Kinda Grim Day – A Sunday Funny
Stolen from my own FB post. Please keep in mind that the local weather on my ridge is spawning cabin fever here.
Okay, apparently there is some sort of sporting event later today. There seem to be gangs of mercenaries preparing to do “battle” for cities they mostly don’t live in sponsored by folks who really could care less about who wins?????
Someone PLEASE take moment and explain.
I DO feel my depiction is accurate, but think about the outrage this can/has/will engender in many other contexts.
Have fun.
ETA: From the comments because I think I hurt myself :
I asked the sergeants guarding the beer, It was Super Bowl Sunday 2005. This is the most important holiday in the US Army. The Marines have the Marine Corps Birthday, I’m not sure what the Navy and Air Force have, but the Army has Super Bowl.
You Army guys crack me up.
Category: Geezer Alert!
Football is maybe 5th on the priority list when the Super Bowl is concerned. It’s an orgy of commercials, awards, and shitty anti American celebrity half time shows now.
My condolences for the “city” that wins because it will be destroyed by the scum of civilization.
Well at least Oakland isn’t in it could you imagine the “celebration” that would result?
I remember Superbowl VII in 1973 when Miami beat the Redskins (1st appearance). Anyone wearing a Miami jacket or hat after the game was subject to a severe pummeling at the hands of the Redskin fans. This happened in Virginia, DC, and Maryland.
The game since then has evolved to a competition of the commercials. Goooooooooooooooo BUDWEISER!!!!!!!!!!
Toothless Dawg #3: I’m cheap… Go Busch!
The Mayor of San Francisco requested fans not to partake in alcohol during the big game…sorry, but i’m sure there will be lots and lots of toilet flushing during halftime. More nanny state BS…Bloomberg style.
I remember reading an article about survey of most common cities pro athletes call home and they seem to be Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Dallas, and Houston…good night life, low taxes, warm weather, and reasonable cost of living?
Have not watched the Superbowl since — well, I don’t recall the last one I watched. And at the end of these events, it’s becoming ‘trash the city we’re in’, sort of like the Goths invading Rome.
I have books to read. And it snowed last night. Naptime supreme.
Although this will not help explain it, it will give you an idea on how to best deal with it…drink beer!

I’m doing chores and other stuff during the game, who cares? I prefer the Puppy Bowl myself, much better therapy for today than a bunch of multi-millionaires running into each other.
As for the rioting and looting afterward, methinks it’s just 0bamites using the game as an excuse to engage in their form of “wealth redistribution”. Screw every one of those smellyassed punks!
I loved being on Westpac/stationed in Guam on Super Bowl Sunday, which was actually early Monday morning there.
Most commands gave the troops the day off, knowing they weren’t going to get jack done with a bunch of drunk/hung over squids.
Must absolutely agree with your depiction. I don’t get it at all. Then again just because I don’t care doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t watch it.
Then again, that’s the problem with watching the SB on Westpac…AFRTS cuts the commercials.
NHSparky #19: When were you on Guam? I kinda liked the place. During my brief tenure there was still a Japanese Soldier that was a topic of conversation.
Watching the B-52’s taking off fully loaded was a trip. Kept thinking about ARCLight raid I’d seen.
Pons, the Japanese soldier you are referring to is famous WWII Japanese straggler, Sgt. Shoichi Yokoi, who’d spent 28 years hiding in the jungles of Talofofo and watching while other people had fun.
At Jeff’s Pirate’s Cove in Ipan on Guam, everyone in the military repairs at least once, and not just to see the photos of the good sergeant.
Ex-PH2 #14: 1969 for me. Looong story for another time and place. Feeling some deja vu,
Yup–my first time there was 1988/89 timeframe, Zero. I was stationed on the Proteus/Holland between 1992/94, and have been there a few times since.
And yes, Jeff’s Pirate’s Cove still has the pictures of Sgt. Yokoi.
As much as I got “rock fever” in Guam, there were still a few good points.
My pet peeve is the way the “Entertainers” try to out-do the previous singers in rendering their own “Version” of the National Anthem. It’s not “your” song you egotistical asswipes. Sing it as it was written, without trying to hit extremely high notes and make it a rock ballad or a blues song. I still want to kick that twig-boy from Aerosmith in the nuts for the way he mangled it.
I can’t wait to hear the local utility explain why the feeder (one of two, IIRC) into the Superdome went tits up.
Did the lights really go out? That must have been special!
Well now the local utility is saying that the feeders were both fine, that whatever failed or tripped out was inside the Superdome, and as such, on the facility maintenance staff.
NHSparky: one report said there was a surge in power input to the Superdome, as well as an elevator stuck on the 7th level and an “odor of gas”. I’m guessing an overheated/shorted elevator motor caused the surge and the smell of the overheated/shorted motor was mistaken for natural gas.
With the stadium packed, all lights/concessions/HVAC running, and the media adding an extra draw for video and transmission, that might not have left much margin in the facilities’ feeds or internal circuitry to handle an unexpected surge w/o tripping.
Or maybe the facility electrician was simply a SF fan and wanted to break the Ravens’ momentum. (smile)
Hondo–there were no storms in the area (I checked) so a voltage DIP (not surge) could have in fact caused current to spike to where some of the transformer breakers tripped.
As far as an “odor of gas”, you know as well as I that people who have never been around an electrical fault can confuse the smell of ozone or acrid smell with gas, so there is that too.
NHSparky: under the scenario I proposed, I’m pretty sure there would have been a transient current surge induced by a short (I think you can set up to monitor either voltage or current). If I recall correctly, that’s also generally accompanied by a transient drop in voltage.
You can monitor both simultaneously if need be. GE, SEL, and ABB all make good relays which you can download the fault records and analyze them in the shop.
If a large load in the Superdome crapped out (like the elevator–no idea what the HP/voltage rating on those motors are) it can in fact cause current to rise/voltage to collapse to the point it can take out a pretty decent sized feeder, especially if it’s already maxxed out.
BTDT, not as fun to watch up close as one might expect.
NHSparky: I hear ya. Been around enough small shorts to know I have no desire whatsoever to be anywhere close to a really big one.
Well, I agree with this post I just don’t understand the commotion.
Nothing new about that I guess. I am just not quite clear why a man who was involved as a defendant and then a state witness in a murder and with 6 illegitimate children is anyone worth watching or promoting.
I don’t expect folks to be choir boys certainly, I am not now nor have I ever been a choir boy myself. But the large number of reprehensible humans involved in the NFL is amazing, it appears to be an organization with a level of corruption approaching that of the Massachusetts State Legislature and for the life of me I can’t understand the attraction of a bunch of steroid enhanced felons prancing about…..
I do rather enjoy their attempts to portray their entertainment product as family friendly. Drinking and erection medication certainly have their place, but not usually in a “family” friendly environment. Football is only marginally faster than baseball, the games are interminably long, 3-4 hours for a 60 minute game? Football is clearly an entertainment vehicle designed to sell product, well done NFL you’ve managed to convince 10s of millions of the value of the product.
I will remain unconvinced, and probably in the minority as I am with many of my thoughts and opinions.
As soon as I heard about the power outage, I thought it might have been caused by some copper-stealing junkie getting turned into a “crispy critter”, that happens these days!
Super bowl 2005, Anheizer Bush donated 2 beers for every soldier in Iraq. i was a 19 year old kid, already been through 11 months of Iraq fighting, including the battles of faluja and sadre city, and the highlight of my year was 2 Bud Ice beers. no clue who won that superbowl or even who played in it, must saythough, i didnt care
