Evil “assault rifle” rescues two students
My cousin, Scott, sends us a link from his local news near Rochester, NY where two RIT students were confronted by thieves in their home;
“They were waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs,” said Boise.
One of them had a handgun trained on Boise.
Within moments, Boise screamed. His cries were heard by his roommate, Raymond.
“It wasn’t like a, ‘I stepped by stepped on a piece of glass’ kind of scream,” Raymond said. “So, I instinctively went to my gun bag.”
Raymond owns an AR-15 which is a military style rifle.
Raymond estimated that just five seconds passed until the door started to open. It was one of the intruders.
“By the time I had it out and ready, one of the men came at my door, slowly opened it, saw that there was a barrel on the other side and from there backed out,” Raymond said.
The two men fled the apartment.
Nothing was taken and no shots were fired.
So, the evil assault rifle and the scary way it looks actually frightened off two armed and hardened criminals. Is someone going to tell the legacy Governor Cuomo?
“I’m happy he saved my life. I was very thankful he had his (gun),” said Boise.
Raymond, who is from New York City, said he uses the rifle for sport shooting at local gun ranges.
“The weapon was legal and he protected his property, said Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard. “We’re thankful that no one was injured,” he said.
So, the gun that protected these two students will be illegal at this time next year, if it’s really an AR15. You know, the legal gun with all of those scary features that frighten the governor and other criminals. Maybe the criminals can come back later after the gun isn’t protecting these students anymore.

My state is a great state and Cuomo has done some good things, but this garbage will stick with him. I am completely opposed to this ban/legislation. I live in rural upstate where it’s a part of our lives to sport shoot. I’ve gone on dates to the range for Hell’s sake!
Chief Sheppard is a POS. From another article:
“My druthers is that in every situation we encounter as police officers, we’re the only ones with guns. That would be the perfect scenario,” said Sheppard. “From a personal safety, taking care of my people… if we’re the only ones with guns, we win. And that’s what I want.”
In the interests of equal time, with every “happy story” you post, why not include all the innocent people killed by guns that day. Those types of stories would probably outnumber the “happy” ones 50-to-1.
In the top 5, Joes back on his game. You have been given the statistics that show that those that are saved by guns far outnumber those that are killed by guns over and over again. I know, I know, I’m talking to a brick wall.

Joe, about 10,000 people are killed by guns each year.
The low estimate, from anti-gun groups, is that guns are used defensively about 100,000 times. That’s the low estimate. The high estimate is 2.5 million.

Percentage of violent crimes resulting in a homicide: approx 1% per FBI statistics
Number of violent crimes prevented annually by lawful use of firearms: approx 2,500,000
Number of firearms homicides, 2010: approx 11,300 – or about 31 per day
Number of murders prevented annually by lawful use of firearms: 1% of 2,500,000, or 25,000 – or over 68 per day

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control on impaired driving clearly show that the number of people killed in accidents in which the drivers were impaired by alcohol and/or drugs is higher than the number of people killed by guns:
•In 2010, 10,228 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.1
•Of the 1,210 traffic deaths among children ages 0 to 14 years in 2010, 211 (17%) involved an alcohol-impaired driver.1
•Of the 211 child passengers ages 14 and younger who died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2010, over half (131) were riding in the vehicle with the alcohol-impaired driver.1
•In 2010, over 1.4 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.3 That’s one percent of the 112 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year.4
•Drugs other than alcohol (e.g., marijuana and cocaine) are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths. These other drugs are often used in combination with alcohol.5
How’s this statistic? Counting just those with a BAC = 0.08 g/dl or more (Legally drunk) :
15,121 in 2006; 35.5% of all motor vehicle fatalities.
So, Joe, alcohol and drug-impaired drivers account for a higher number of fatalities than guns EVERY DAMNED YEAR, you closet nose-wiper.

I suppose that if the rifle had been in a locker, ammo separate, and trigger lock on–the way some folks would have us all store our stuff–the outcome would have been much different, to include that the bag guys would have had the would-be victim’s AR-15. It looks like one was won over in this episode. I’m guessing that the unarmed roommate wasn’t a gun aficionado by the sounfs of things. I’m also guessing the roommate will ask the fellow who met the threat to accompany him to the range.

Joe, I’ll say this using very basic words for you to understand…
If a criminal stabs a victim with a knife, they blame the criminal.
If a criminal bludgeons a victim with a hammer or bat, they blame the criminal.
If a criminal strangles a victim with a cord, they blame the criminal.
If a criminal shoots a victim with a firearm, why do they blame the firearm? Would it not make more sense to blame the criminal who pulled the trigger?
Statistically speaking, with all of the firearms in the U.S., there are far more that ARE NOT used to commit crimes.
@ 12 – According to the link below, the victim confronted the intruder with an EMPTY AR-15 precisely for the reasons you state. He had just enough time to get the weapon itself out, not enough to unlock the ammo in a seperate container (as prescribed by law…) A shining example of how all of this regulation only hobbles those of us who follow the law.

Just read a story about a guy in DC who shot and killed 1 of 3 pit bulls mauling an 11 year old. Police are investigating whether it was legal for him to even own the gun and whether he had a carry license. If he does not have a carry license and he was not on his property it was illegal for him to shoot the dog.
The other two dogs were killed by LEO who heard the first shot.
Questions:
1) Is it preferrable that the kid dies?
2) What is happening to the owner(s) of the animals?

In RE to Ex PH2’s link, I find it interesting that the school bought “high powered rifles” and “semiautomatic” rifles, “Colt model LEwhatever” rifles. Not “Bushmsters” not “Assault rifles” not “high capacity magazines. Media bias makes me hot under the collar.

In virtually every state including DC, you can use force (up to and including what is referred to as deadly force) regardless of its means to protect yourself and others against serious bodily harm and/or death. However, the gun charge should stand if not properly licensed.
He was legally cleared to stop the dogs … if it meant using an illegal gun … so be it!
Trivia: Does anyone know of the famous case in NYC that fully supports this basic rule of law?

That’s pretty much what I based my comment about the CL on. Maybe I’m reading more into it than I need to. They should give the civilian shooter a medal, IMHO, but instead he’s being investigated.

@Jonn- According to the official FAQ site for the NY SAFE Act, the AR-15 owner WILL NOT have to forfeit his weapon, he will just have to register it:
Q: I have an assault weapon. Do I have to give it up?
A: No. If you have an assault weapon, you can register it with the State Police. You have until April 15, 2014 to register your weapon. A form will be made available on this website no later than April 15, 2013. Under state and federal law, some people are not allowed to possess a weapon, such as convicted felons, individuals who have been involuntarily committed, or individuals currently under an order of protection. These people will not be able to register. There is no fee for registering.

Random searches of homes is out of the question, at least for now, but a nice registration list is a good start, isn’t it. Hey, it’s free and they’ll even send you the forms. That’s great! Next step is dealing with noncompliance. A group of 200 or so will be targeted and their prosecution aired everywhere, not just in NY. That will prompt many a registration. And, of course, the wonderful gov’t will declare an amnesty from prosecution period shortly thereafter. Now comes the fun part. Those prosecuted and those that follow after the initial dog and pony show will lose their right to own or possess a firearm. This is a process and the many of you who think that confiscation is logistically impossible, well, in my view it ain’t–and is years away in this process.
I’m not implying that a registration is good, but at least it’s not all out confiscation YET, which is what will happen if Frankenstein’s bill passes. Pistol registration has been mandatory for how long and those haven’t been taken away… YET.

Shouldn’t burglars and home invaders have the right to go about their livelihood without the fear of being shot by a military-style assault weapon?
Guns should be outlawed. The two students, or others like them, could always have filed a police report after the fact (assuming they survived), and there’s a greater-than-zero probability that the perpetrators would be caught.
