A Code Talker Passes
One of the few remaining Navajo Code Talkers from World War II has passed.
George Smith died Tuesday, 30 October 2012, aged 90. He will be buried with full military honors on Saturday, 3 November 2012 at Rehobeth Cemetery near Gallup, NM.
During World War II, Smith served with the 2nd Marine Division at Saipan, Okinawa, and other locations.
The story of the Navajo Code Talkers is fairly well known. If you don’t know it, you should visit this site and spend a few minutes.
Rest in peace, my elder brother in arms.

Semper Fi, sir. Rest in peace and thank you for what you did.
I grew up in Northern Arizona around the Navajo. They are an amazing people, strong, and resilient and with a warm, welcoming culture. The Code Talkers are the bravest among them, as being in the presence of death is something that is very much not part of the traditions of their people. Rest in peace, Mr. Smith. This world is poorer for you leaving it.
Godspeed, sir. A grateful nation celebrates your life and laments your passing.
Some of us were around when the last couple of civil war Veterans passed. (That should start a Google search, eh?)
It is difficult to conceive that there will come a time that there will be the last few Desert Storm and Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans. BVut it will happen. The absolute necessity is for all American Veterans of each conflict be honored and remembered. It’s why I keep coming back to TAH. The folks here do not forget.
The Code Talkers are legendary. Mr. Smith’s eternal spirit lives among us and now with those who preceded him in passage from this world.
Another sad loss. These Marines were so very special. While it is true that all of us did our part and that all the jobs we did were significant, the contribution of these Marines is beyond legendary.
RIP, sir. You are remembered for a job well done.
I did my SNCO Academy PME on the Navajo Code Talkers. Some of them were as young as 14 years old. Can you imgqaine just breaking into puberty and your are off training for war? I wonder how many 14 year olds these days would be up to the challenge?
@7
Not many apparently…too fat to even lift themselves off the couch according to some retired Generals.
From one Commo person (31E and ham radio operator) to his MUCH superior elder brother, I salute you.
Rest, you’ve more then earned it.
