Fatal shooting in rural Missouri believed to be self-defense
By Sarah Motter
BENTON CO., Mo. (KCTV) – Self-defense is believed to play a role in the fatal shooting of a man assaulting multiple individuals with a dagger near a rural Missouri amphitheater. The Benton County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office says that around 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, emergency crews were called to the 3100 block of Highway MM, near the Grand Stage Amphitheater, with reports of a disturbance that involved a knife and firearms.
As law enforcement officials responded, they said additional information was received that an individual had been shot. When they arrived, they found Mark S. Lomax, 59, with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was airlifted to the University of Kansas Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Sheriff’s Office said video footage reviewed on Friday revealed Lomax had been armed with an edged dagger as he assaulted multiple individuals. He confronted a vehicle that attempted to leave and tried to assault the driver as he stabbed the vehicle multiple times.
As the altercation continued, law enforcement officials said a woman emerged from Lomax’s home and screamed for help as she ran to a neighbor’s house. The neighbors came out as the altercation escalated and Lomax was shot.
The investigation revealed two individuals fired shots during the incident, however, only one is believed to have fired the fatal shot.

He stabbed a car? Mr. Lomax was either on or off some serious meds- or maybe both at once. Thanks, Gun Bunny.

Some person stabbing my car is likely to develop a severe case of tire treads. I tried to get away but oopsie…
How many times would you run over their ass while trying to leave…
Told ya that transmission needed fixin’…
Well, ya see…it was a narrow road, and there was steep ditches on both sides, so….
The dumbass Lumass got bent in Benton, then bent the knife that he took to a gunfight. Maybe if he’d of had a nice trench knife instead of a dagger or had not decided to attack a vehicle he wouldn’t have bent things so bad. BZ to the citizen that delivered rounds on target, center mass (yep, that’s where you aim, girls and boys), thus taking out the trash, making the “Show Me” State a little safer.
(borrowing from a cool series)
“What knife laws does this thing violate?”
…
“All of them.”
Looked like a toothpick to me.
“Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still…”
Sorry, I just got a bard stuck in my head.
One fewer casualty in the War on Drugs.
After 59 years you’d expect the stupid / drugs to have already been fatal.
I’m guessing some mental issues were involved – and they finally got to the poor guy. If it is such a tragic case, I feel for the citizens who had to pull the trigger to protect others.
That trench knife has never appealed to me. A Bowie or a Gerber Mark II is more in line with what I’d like.
Built in brass knuckles is a nice touch. I wonder if they are bigger than Little David’s dainty face.
