“Look at me Mr F*cking Howdy Doody!”
This story is appealing to me based on the ingredients alone ; Football, The Military, and Swearing. Yes this happened two weeks ago, but I was too busy spawning greatness to write. Still, an entertaining story to say the least.
The University of Wyoming did battle with the Air Force Academy on Saturday, but the real fight almost took place following the game.
Cowboys coach Dave Christensen verbally attacked Air Force coach Troy Calhoun following the game, as you can see here (Warning: video is NSFW due to multiple expletives):
Possibly because I’m of a younger generation than Christensen but I don’t really get the Howdy Doody comment… One thing I do get is the challenge of Calhoun’s integrity, as “Integrity First” is one of three Air Force Core Values. For those at work and who can’t watch the video here is the SFW version of what Christensen said:
• “F— you!”
• “Faking a f—— injury, nice ethics, man … That’s great f—— ethics!”
• “Yeah, right, look at me, Mr. F——- Howdy Doody!”
• “Get in your f—— locker room. That’s f—— bullshit … No f—— integrity …”
• “Get in your f—— press conference, fly boy!”
Great ethics yourself, Mr. f*cking 19-27 career record.
It’s worth noting that Christensen’s Wyoming Cowboys are 1-7 and the loss to Air Force may have destroyed their oh-so relevant season…right? No, it’s not. It is worth noting however, that this childish tirade took place on Military Appreciation night at Soldiers Memorial Field. This explains why Christensen is wearing an ACU ball cap despite never serving a day in the military.
Christensen has since issued a half-assed apology and been fined $50,000 as well as a one game suspension. I’d rather he be fired altogether as this isn’t the first incident he’s had with inappropriate conduct but, I doubt I’ll hear anything about Wyoming’s football program until AF beats them again.

I would have thought that being a coach in Wyoming one would have a little more class and appreciation of the military. I would like to see the NCAA hammer him!
When I was at CSU, Wyoming was our biggest rival and the games and aftermath were always nasty.
What a great example of manhood for his players – not!
The Air Force coach showed great restraint.
Does the guy on the receiving end of the tirade by chance have red hair? Wasn’t uncommon when I was a kid to taunt redheads as ‘Howdy Doody’.LONG time ago. (Sorry, unable to access the video to confirm)
@3
Not unless he dyes it. I was hoping one of the more *ahem* seasoned readers on here could explain it…
Red hair, freckles, big ears+ presto! Howdy Doody ! a fight!!
UW goes through football coaches like a bum goes though Maddog 20/20. Looks like it’s time for another one :-). Univiristy of Wyoming, class of 91
That is just weird.
Howdy Doody? It used to just be a sorta semi slam meaning someone was rather of clownish, or a little clumsy, especially if they had red hair and freckles. Or just freckles. (Didn’t really know about the red hair. B/W TV – it all looked about the same!)
“It’s Howdy Doody time, it’s Howdy Doody time….” Yeah, well, one day when someone calls someone else Spongebob Squarepants, somebody will say, “Who?”
Boys will be boys. I don’t know what the AF coach did but maybe he deserved a good tongue lashing. As for the AF coach’s reported silence, if somebody sees a B-52 over the the Wyoming coach’s house, I wouldn’t stick around to watch it.
AirCav, it’ll be oh dark hundred and a flight of B-2’s. The only sound will be the loud noises in the night.
I went to the Air Force, University of Michigan game this year. Air Force played pretty well and gave Michigan a pretty good game. They flew a B2 over the stadium!! Pretty cool! My girlfriend works for the Air Force but is a UofM alum, she was a little conflicted!
Howdy Doodie = kinda wimpy and nerdy.
I never understood the nonsense around sporting events, it’s a f$cking game dipsticks you are not curing cancer, not removing the Taliban, not balancing the budget, it’s a stupid f$cking game that provides entertainment (apparently) as an opiate to the masses. Some lucky childish buffoons who are genetically gifted get to play as adults, but it appears their brains don’t mature quite the same as their bodies so the on and off field antics represent the least of us, not the best of us.
This is how a society that worships celebrity over substance, flash over honor, and money over integrity declines. Slowly, under the weight of its own inbred incompetence, worshipping false heroes and making idols of those whose personal code of ethics fits on a fortune cookie proverb insert.
I am ever more saddened to see parents beating up youth referees, dads killing each other over a youth hockey game, and the myriad of other associated nonsense that I deal with regarding youth sports every day. Instead of sports teaching grace with victory and humility in defeat, a very different lesson is being taught all across the nation every day. That lesson benefits no one, but few will challenge the lesson as the masses who worship at the altar of celebrity grow ever larger.
Cowboy Bob and Howdy Doody. “It’s Howdy Doody time!”
That takes me back to Saturday mornings at the neighbors’ house and their B&W TV, and Mickey Mouse Club. I SO wanted to be a Mouseketeer.
@12. Hey, Ex-Ph2, others here will find this hard to believe BUT the first color TV I ever saw wasn’t color TV at all. It was a redish (as I recall) film that one placed on the TV screen! And my first honest-to-goodness color TV came with a remote. So what’s special about that? The remote was spring-activated!
I really hate to say it but it seems that Eastern Europe aka the Commies, raised better sportsmen, if not better athletes than our system. I remember when our sports started really getting commercialized,,, It started being more about the smack-talking, end zone dance and type of shoes instead of how they helped their team.
I’m a big boxing fan and its embarassing to see The gentlemanly, disciplined Klitshko Brothers simply knock the shit out of our loud-mouthed posturing heavyweight challengers.
Want good sport? Go watch pee wee, high school, and D II and III teams. They play for the love of the game still, whatever that game is. Want good sportsmanship? Um–I’ll get back to you on that.
@14 uh, soccer hooligans? How about Zidane’s famous head butt of an opponent….I don’t think Europe cornered the market on sports. Have you ever seem the number of people spittingtng on n cyclists during the tour de france?
@12 & 13
We had the first color TV in the neighborhood because my dad built it from a heathkit. I remember when we could finally watch it. Started off black and white, with all the guts laidout on the table behind the tube. As he got more assembled we got more colors. First the reds, then greens, finally we had color TV!!!
@17. My dad would have built one of those IF it could have been built with a hammer, saw, screw driver, and–above all else–masking tape!
Yep. Remember my first color TV. Seems like it was around 1978. It was a Mitsubishi, reduced price floor model from Sears. Must say that I was very happy to own a Mitsubishi even if it wasn’t a jet.
Okay, it has been hours since this piece went up and I can’t get “It’s Howdy Doody time!” out of my head. I’m not one to suffer alone so for those of you who are unbothered by those four words, here are three for you: Makin’ Bacon Pancakes. Enjoy.
If anyone needs a refresher or Makin’ Bacon Pancakes is alien to you, go right ahead and use the link. And please, don’t thank me. I’m happy to share.
11 – This!! There should not be college sports – especially not football. Football should have its own A, AA, AAA farm system like baseball does, not rely on the colleges.
College is a place of higher learning.
And kudos to the opiate comment too… how many people have no concept of what is going on in the world, local state federal or global, but know their “team’s” stats for the past 20 years…
Old Tanker: and Europe’s got nothing on Latin America in that respect. The folks there take their futbol WAY too seriously.
It even sparked a war once, in Central America.

Being one of the young pups on here I don’t remember when our house only had black and white TV (I do remember when I got spoiled and my dad let me have an old black and white tv in my room). I am old enough to remember when I was the remote control for the family tv, getting my atari 2600 in the 5th grade, and our Betamax with the remote that had a wire running from it to the Beta.
