Amazon wants to hire vets
BooRadley sent us a link to a plea from Amazon for veterans;
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced that it is seeking military veterans to fill the tens of thousands of permanent and temporary positions in its nationwide fulfillment network. Amazon has long supported military veterans as an employer and was today named the #1 Top Military Friendly Employer by G.I. Jobs magazine.
In fact, someone emailed me the other day that they’re looking for exclusively veterans who are bilingual to fill some positions in Los Angeles. If you’re looking for work in the LA area and you speak you-know-what, drop me an email and I’ll try to put you in contact with him.
I don’t want to become a job placement service, but I’ll do whatever I can to get you people off of the streets and into a job.

As a vet, I am not sure the idea of giving Vets preferential treatment for jobs is a good one. Everyone needs jobs, not just vets. There are some jobs vets are more qualified for, and more apt to apply for, and there are already government jobs that give vets preferrence. This will breed resentment among civilians without veteran status who cannot get a job. One day soon the goodwill in this country toward vets will be a distant memory
Would one of the folks who have been at TAH for a few years please tell me that you recognize “david” and that he’s an old kidder from way back.
Put that resentment into action, then. Sign up for an all expenses paid vacation to whatever hellhole we’re in now. If you make it back in a big enough piece, you too can get preference for a bilingual phone support job. It’s a kickin’ deal.
Mind you, I’m not knocking Amazon. In fact, I’m going to order a book to show my support for their initiative.
There is no need for anyone to recognize me. I am a vet. I am still in the National Guard. I just returned from Afghanistan last year, Nov 12 2010. I work at a good job, and where I work they hire now mostly veterans, which is great. But they used to hire an even split of vets and civilians, but lately, since our job entails some familiarity with small arms–its an armed security job with an extensive background check required–the company hires almost exclusively ex-military. I have seen the resentment this has caused amongst some of the older employees who have been there many years, since way before 9-11. I am all for companies hiring veterans, of course. But I think my concern is valid, even though it is just my opinion, based only on my own personal work experience.
David. Welcome back to the world. What you are saying is that the company you work for prefers applicants with experience with small arms. That’s not a veterans preference, except to the extent that military veterans have been thoroughly trained in precisely what the company is looking for in applicants. It’s hard to get that experience in general society and self-teaching doesn’t come certified. The fact that some people resent the increased hiring of vets is not the same thing as their getting fired and replaced by vets. As for their resentment, how you say in Engish–tough shit.
Ive been a supporter of Amazon for a while since they were on of the few who would ship to an APO address.
Don’t buy the PR hype. Amazon treats vets like shit.
Let’s get the “part-time” stuff out of the way: They’ve been in the news over their piss poor working conditions and lying to part-timers about converting them into full-timers. With that being said…
I’ve spent the past six months applying to their full-time positions. Nada. When their veterans recruiter referred me to open positions I was overqualified for, I applied to those as well. Nothing. When I asked the veterans recruiter why a month and a half has gone by without so much as a phone call for a position I was overqualified for and that she referred me to in the first place? Silence. All of the sudden, she falls off the face of the planet.
Again: Don’t buy the hype. Amazon doesn’t give a shit about vets.
Dude, check in with me. Amazon has hired hundreds of military leaders in the past two years. Check out the site; http://www.amazon.com/military.
