Rocks and Shoals
Watching this crop of ‘hippies’ protesting whatever it is they are protesting has led me once again down memory lane.
Follow along if you will?
Until 1951 the US Navy was governed by the Articles for the Government of the United States Navy, also known as Rocks and Shoals for this bit:
The punishment of death, or such other punishment as a court martial may adjudge, may be inflicted on any person in the naval service —
10. Or intentionally or willfully suffers any vessel of the Navy to be stranded, or run upon rocks or shoals, or improperly hazarded or maliciously or willfully injures any vessel of the Navy, or any part of her tackle, armament, or equipment, whereby the safety the vessel is hazarded or the lives of the crew exposed to danger.
When I was in (64-69) Rocks and Shoals was discussed freely by the old timers.
At least as late as the ’60s corporal punishment was used in schools (and yes, I know from my own experience) . Even my grandmother favored a willow switch to get my attention on occasion.
I gotta wonder if this lot of occupiers has EVER been held responsible for their actions?
Me… rather taking a swing at ’em, I’m considering finding a willow switch and putting them, one at time, across my knee.

I remember hearing that term when I was in, from some of the old timer Navy types.
Wall to wall counseling in otherwords for us younger types. (Served from 1999-2009) USAF & TX ARMY NG.
Wall to wall counseling was even around in my day. I think it’s the same as the Navy version, but we’re land lubbers, so we get W2@ counseling.
Just so you know…in 1972-74, corporal punishment was alive and well…had a kid in my class for several years that was spanked by the teacher…
As my Gramp would say…if you want to sass or be unappreciative of work and time, get out to the crab apple tree and pick your switch!
And to answer yer question…NO they have never been responsible.
They do all pretty much look and act like a bunch of spoiled brats.
No, accountability is not in their vocabulary, at least as applies to themselves. The use of the term “I want” leaves no doubt about their priorities.
Zero, you bring back memories. The last time I was ‘judged and sentenced’ by the board of education was as a Junior in High School (graduated in ’62 and enlisted 6 months later). I would never have thought to strike back at the teacher, I knew I had done wrong. Anyway, it was more embarrassing that painful even if she did have a masterful swing.
I remember well my mother telling me as a youngster to go out and come back with a switch (followed by the warning) and if its too small you will get a lot more of it.
Well the skipper of the USS Nevada did just that (run aground) and got a medal on 07 Dec 41.
its amazing, a little pain early on in life, can avoid a LOT of pain later on. if we could actually spank children, then you’d be amazed how things turn around.
I graduated in 1999 in Arkansas. We still got paddled in school. I had my fair share
SOS…school of the soldier. After duty training. It was very effective!
#8 Jester I’m in school now and get and give paddling all the time. But for very different reasons I think.
I can still remember my elementary school principal – Mrs Buttbreaker, er Brubaker. Yes, she have occasion to enhance the memory.
Interesting historical fact:
Admiral Nimitz, while responsible for safety of each vessel, ran the first four ships he was assigned to aground.
As punishment, he was transferred to the Submarine force. He was the only blue-suiter in the force. After studying U-boats in Germany, he was the expert. After WWI broke out, as the ONLY expert in submarine warfare, he began his rise in the ranks.
