Bombs kill 60 across Iraq

| August 15, 2011

As the US gets closer to it’s scheduled withdrawal date, 60 Iraqis succumbed to several bombing attacks across the country today according to the Associated Press;

The blasts were coordinated to go off Monday morning and included parked car bombs, roadside bombs, a suicide bomber driving a vehicle that rammed into a police station and even bombs attached to lightpoles.

The scope of the violence – seven explosions went off in different towns in Diyala province alone – emphasized that insurgents are still able to carry out attacks despite repeated crackdowns by Iraqi and U.S. forces.

Iraqis were furious at security officials and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Who would have thought that violence would increase as we publicized our withdrawal and make a big deal about the schedule? Well, except everyone with more than half-a-brain. This attack comes just weeks after the Maliki government admitted that they’ll be hoping the US would leave combat forces there a little longer. I guess some folks in Iraq can’t wait for us to leave now.

In the end, it will have to be the Iraqis, not Americans who have to stand up and put an end to this shyte. I think they can do it in the end though.

The US can’t leave forces in Iraq without altering the SOFA. That coupled with the fact that we can’t stay there forever, and that Iraqi’s must take charge of their own destiny, no matter how bloodily in the making.

No worries however, Maliki is on his way to emulating the last series of Iraqi tyrants….Iraq will be settled in the near term.
