Just in case…

I missed this, maybe you did too?
Banks Offering Emergency Plans for Debt Ceiling Crisis
More banks are announcing plans to help in the event that the federal government debt ceiling crisis results in non-payment of pay for service members and other Department of Defense employees.
USAA (my bank) appears to be on top of things, and my VA check went in so we can eat and keep our house for another month.

I received my VA disability check too but the education benefits portion isn’t looking to well. I have 6 days left to pay my tuition and I keep getting “We don’t know if you’ll receive it” from the 1-888 # along from my college financial advisor/veteran’s rep. It’s very stressful not knowing because I can’t purchase my books due to the fact I will probably have to pay out of pocket for my tuition.
Laura #1: I wish I could offer helpful advice. I have no/zero/nil idea how to help in your case. It seems some of the banks in the article are offering short-term interest free loans (can’t verify). Perhaps others here can offer more?
Laura:
1. Are you using the Post-911 GI Bill? Or the old-fashioned Montgomery GI Bill (pre-911)? I don’t know anyone’s who’s been paid on time with the new GI Bill, and the colleges/votechs know that.
2. Have you spoken with your school’s Vet Affairs rep? S/he may know a way of helping.
Zero: Thanks, I will look into it.
Dave: When I said “We don’t know if you’ll receive it”, I was talking about the government debt ceiling talks. It seems the VA has put everything on super slow motion just in case the gov’t defaults.
I spoke to a very kind VA Counselor(surprisingly) when I called the 1-888 # Wednesday. She told me that right now, no one knows anything and if any counselor has told me otherwise then they are wrong. This is going for claims, Voc Rehab approval, CoE’s etc.
This is also the first time I am going to college and I’m using the Post 9/11 GI Bill at a State Uni. I’m pretty much going to have to take out a student loan which I was told I wouldn’t have to do at all due to the way the P9/11 works for state colleges.
I honestly have never felt so screwed over in my life being a Veteran. I won’t even get into how long I’ve been waiting for my claim. 🙁
I also have direct deposit for my VA check, and it hasn’t shown up yet. I just checked online.
Could make for an interesting week.
There will be no default. The gov’t takes in more than enough in taxes every month to not only pay the interest on the debt it owes to creditors but also vet ans ss benefits with a little left over. The only way a default on the debt will happen is if the Pres wants it to. They could immediately close several depts like Education, Transportation and Energy not to mention repeal Obamacare to save even more. We did fine without them for 200 years, we can do without them now. This talk of default is total bull to raise taxes and let the government keep spending us into oblivion. The rating agencies have already said that we are going to be downgraded not due to this “crisis” but the amount of unfunded liabilities coming down the road to the tune of $100,000,000,000,000. Don’t believe what you are hearing from the mainstream media or plutocrats in DC
@jonp…exactly! The suggestion to our military in harms way that they just might not get paid was unconscionable. To put that burden on them causing concerns for their families welfare when they need to be focused on their mission and staying alive is just beyond the pale. The money is there it’s just a matter of priorities. This threat was nothing but fear mongering to produce a reaction from conservatives to pressure those that represent us to fold. What have we become America? In the span of my life time we have gone from a nation of people that gave everything they could to help the war effort and keep the troops supplied with what they need to a people that sit back and do nothing while those in harms way are told they just might not get paid. Where was the public outcry over this nonsense? I looked high and low let me know if I missed it. We should all take note that this fear mongering was directed at active duty military, our veterans and our senior citizens. Why? Because they knew we would not be in the streets and we would let the process play out and whatever happened we would suck it up and do whatever we had to do. That’s who we are.
