The Scottish People say NO to Empire.
On May 5th, as the media hyped up an ‘alternative vote’ campaign that many people knew and cared little about, another, far more significant election was taking place. In Scotland, a Parliament was being elected.
Being a genuine hillbilly (vs Jonn the carpetbagger) this story fascinates me.
It is a sign of the arrogance of the English media that the Scottish elections have been so greatly ignored up until now, because their impact will be strongly felt. The SNP have promised to hold a referendum on independence, and have summarily won in a landslide. So, where would Scottish independence leave the so-called “United Kingdom”; England, Wales and the six counties of Northern Ireland isn’t such a Great British Empire, is it?
The simple tone of the article is entertaining. In truth WE may be on a similar path here. I can not help but to look at states rights issues cropping up around the corner.
Our civil war had multiple elements unresolved 150 years ago. This seems far simpler??

Genuine hillbillies call themselves Mountain Williams.
This separatist movement will as successful as Bloc Quebecois’s drive to make Quebec a separate nation. All nations have a thirst for cash, and Scotland will be no different.
Good on em, and good luck with that. 2 Things if it goes down 1) Will they kick out the muzzies? 2) Will they be Socialist too? Couldn’t get the link to come up on the original article.
I can see states rights becoming more and more of an issue over next few years also.
I’ve seen graphs in the past pointing out that Scotland is pretty much a welfare state taking in tax revenue from other parts of the UK. So I’m not sure the rest would be sad to see it go.
England subsidizes Wales, N. Ireland, and Scotland. The English would be far better off finacially. With the demise of the BlackWatch, Scotland contributes a single regiment(about a battalion) to the British Army. The Scots get far more from the Union then they put in. The S.cottish N.ationalist P.arty, is even further to the left then Labor, and those are the two largest parties. The leader of the SNP is Alex Salmon I believe, who is nothing more then a blowhard. He purposesly propagates myths, because he knows in an independent Scotland he would most likely be head of state, even though the country would suffer because of it. “Unity of the Crowns” occurred when queen Elizabeth 1 died with no direct heir. Her nearest relative was the “King of Scots”, James who already ruled Scotland. One Monarch for three nations, but there was no political union. His powers were distinct in all three realms. His son Charles the first, would learn this first hand when he tried to impose his will uniformally. In doing so he would lose his head. It wasn’t until 1707 when the “Act of Union” was passed, that the Stottish Parliament agreed to dissolve itself into a United Kingdom. Scottish MPs would then sit in Westminster with they’re English counterparts. Scotland was never conquered it was incorporated of its own free will, which allowed the realm far more influence then it would have enjoyed. The Scottish enlightenment is a direct result of it, there would be no Adam Smith without it. This all goes back to Tony Blair’s devolution scheme, of the the 1990s. In theory, more power would be delegated or “devolved” at levels of government below London. The problem was how it was structured. Instead of the counties/towns/cities be granted some autonomy at the local level, but then recognizing the national government in Westminster, they created sub national parliaments. These were based on national lines, which undermined the entire Act of Union. The one exception is England itself, they have no individual standing body, they only have Westminster, the national parliament, to pass legislation.… Read more »
Cedo – thanks for the background.
Socialist(ic) independence movements generally fail at the outset when the people realize they can’t steal money from the makers. Then it’s back to status quo.
They’ll certainly need more industry. The International Haggis Market isn’t what it used to be. Fortunately, they do have several lovely distilleries.
Other than that, they’ve got the tourist Clan Kilt industry and bagpipe band industry, but that will only generate so much in taxes.
I predict a lot of folks returning to stone cairns and hard-scrabble sheep farming if this independence bit comes off.
