Sometimes…
Sometimes old wounds get torn open.
We have a CinC who never served, surrounded by more who are so arrogant that they don’t realize might have missed something by not wearing the uniform, sending our folks into harms way.
Set aside the mode (the UN made me do it), and just keep the above in mind.
For me this is a “been there, done that” moment.
Of course, the context is NOT the same – and any parallels inexact, but I think I can invoke LBJ with ease to explain my concerns.
Left with a holdover war from the last President, LBJ made half-hearted decisions that were, at best, peripheral to HIS agenda.
Sadly, there is little malice in either case, just little folks paying the price.
Thanks Kriste.

Need I remind you that not always having served makes a good President. (Remember Carter???) What’s more important is leadership qualities, of which 0bama has none. For crying out loud, before he was a Senator, the best thing on his resume was being a community organizer in FAILING communities?!?!?!?!? People overlooked his true “accomplishments” and bought into his rhetoric. It amazes me that 52% of this countries people are that stupid!! (I will admit that our alternatives didn’t seem much better)
Zero,
Was the legislation for LBJ’s “Great Society” piggy-backing off of legislation funding Viet Nam, or were they distinct entities.
Given LBJ’s push for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, he gave the appearance of using war to distract America while he made his pet projects a reality.
@Thor Carter did serve he graduated from the Naval Academy. He also was cited for preventing a nuclear accident.
Anonymous,
Reading Thor’s words, he acknowledge’s Mr. Carter’s service while saying having served doesn’t make for a great President.
Damn… I knew I couldn’t address everything so I opted for simple.
Thor #1: Having served simply provides perspective. If we were to delve into history we will find numerous examples both plus and minus as far as how our Presidents might have dealt with those in Uniform when the call came.
DaveO #2: Given LBJ’s push for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, he gave the appearance of using war to distract America while he made his pet projects a reality. You get ONE points. I wish I’d said that (thought I did).
Lookit… Anyone can find exceptions.
I’m BATMAN!!!!!
Lyndon Johnson served in the Navy during World War II.
Was the legislation for LBJ’s “Great Society” piggy-backing off of legislation funding Viet Nam, or were they distinct entities. That’s exactly what he did, piggy back it off funding ‘Nam.
Major–if by “service” you mean awarding himself a Silver Star for going on a mission where no fire was exchanged on the plane he was on and the enemy was never within range, then yeah, I guess you could say it was “service”.
He was supposed to be in charge of inspecting shipyard facilities on the West Coast and in Texas. He never held a combat command.
