Pappy Boyington Field
A young novice film maker and former Marine, Kevin Gonzalez, read our discussion about the phony member of the Black Sheep squadron and invited us all to San Diego to watch his first project entitled “Pappy Boyington Field“, a story about veterans getting Boyinton’s hometown airbase named for him;
Yeah, it’s tomorrow night, so it’s a little short notice, but if you can get away, please do. Kevin will be there to answer questions. I’m sure there will other showings so keep your eye for it. Here’s the trailer;
And here’s an abbreviated History Channel 15-minute video biography of Greg “Pappy” Boyington;

I’ve admired Greg Boyington for years. I grew up watching the show “Black Sheep Squadron” with Robert Conrad, John Laroqutte (Dan from Night Court), Larry Manetti (Rick from Magnum PI) and so many other famous faces. It’s hard to imagine that the hard nosed Colonel Lard is the same guy from MacGyver. I own the DVD Collection of that TV show and I have also read the Baa Baa Blacksheep book many years ago. I am glad to see people have not forgotten this very remarkable veteran.
Here’s a photograph of “Pappy” making a surprise visit to the Black Sheep Squadron at Chu Lai, South Vietnam in 1965.
my dad once told me of meeting Pappy, and that he was a pro at imbibing alcohol. Still from the AVG to the Black Sheep he was a fighter pilot through and through. I think it is important we remember such men. But just as important is knowing what happened after their time, what happened after their service.
When my Fraternity nicknamed me “Pappy” (how many 26 year old freshmen do you meet?) and the nickname stuck, I took no offense by it, actually kinda like it.
I spent a couple of years in the US Coast Guard Reserves @USCG Station Mobile and while at Yorktown for my Engineer school I was given the nickname Pappy by my class. I was 32 years old at the time and also the class leader. Most of my class was 18 – 21 years old. I took it with pride knowing that Greg Boyington was also given the same nickname.
