Pentagon is Jarret’s personal wine stewards

| February 3, 2011

COB6 sent this link the other day with a fairly funny story about some civie asking him about the seating arrangement at some la-dee-da function while COB6 was decked out in his blues.

I know the source for this Jarret story isn’t the best, but, hey, it’s as good as anything the Left was using against Bush. There’s a better chance of this happening than GWB being a coke addict;

According to our tipster, Jarrett was seated at the head table along with several other big-name politicians and a handful of high-ranking military officials. As an officer sporting several stars walked past Jarrett, she signaled for his attention and said, “I’d like another glass of wine.”

Of course the story ends with the fact that the general did fetch her a glass of wine.

I don’t know if it really happened or not, but the fact that everyone believes it says something to Democrats about what they still haven’t overcome.

And, oh, thanks to Claymore for resending the link this morning.

Similar event happened in the early days of the Clinton administration. At a lawn party at the WH, it began raining, and the junior military officers present were told to help bring the party stuff indoors.

Lots of outrage. I worked with both of the officers in Bosnia, and the real deal was that they were asked, and that in exchange for the privilige of serving in the WH, the Army expects them to be helpful, and neutral.

Likely, there’s a history between said general officer and Ms. Jarrett, and simple courtesy of the old fashioned variety says a gentleman can serve a woman alcohol, without merit or demerit.

Similar thing happened to me and my ex wife (an USAF LtCol) when walking into a venue for the Air Force Birthday Ball several years ago.

Said ball was being held in Kansas City, and we were both in Blue Mess Dress uniforms (USAF and US Army).

Some smart ass walks up to us at the entrance where cars pull up to drop off/pick up passengers, attempts to hand me his valet parking stub and asked me to “bring his car around, quickly”.

Well, I “quickly” educated him on the fact that I was NOT a valet, and he should go fuck himself…quickly, as I was a LTC in the US Army.

Wife and I then stroll into the hotel, laughing our asses off.

Kinda left him there with his mouth flapping…speechless.

Maybe if we put more veterans in office, less of this kind of nonsense would occur?

I’ll add that I think the General showed an awful lot of class; he could have simply “educated” her right on the spot, and legitimately embarrassed her in public.

PN: it’s not a function of having worn the uniform. The late Representative Murtha was a dyed-in-the-wool jackass, and a retired colonel of Marines.

It’s about having class, or at the least basic manners. Some folks are too rich and powerful to get it, like Cuzco in “The Emperor’s New Groove.”

I’m with PintoNag on his second comment. If this story isn’t apocryphal, then that General exhibited an extraordinary amount of class.

I think it is an embarrassment that the military is so poorly understood or respected.
