USS Wasp Personnel Attacked in Izmir

USS Wasp (LHD-1)

U.S. Service Members Assaulted by Turkish Nationalist Youth Group

John Hayward

Two American service members were attacked by a mob of young Turkish nationalists in the western city of Izmir on Monday as a crowd of onlookers chanted anti-American slogans. The American personnel are reportedly safe, and Turkish police have arrested 15 of the assailants.

The assault appeared to be an attempted kidnapping, as the mob threw a sack over the head of one American sailor while the other tried to defend him.

The attack was reportedly thwarted when five other U.S. soldiers stepped in, followed by Turkish police.

The office of the Izmir governor said the attackers were members of a group called Turkiye Genclik Birligi (TGB), or the “Turkey Youth Union” in English. TGB is the virulently anti-American youth wing of a fringe nationalist party called Vatan Partisi, or the “Patriotic Party.”

7 US unarmed service members vs 15 Turks? How many Turks were KIA?

5JC

I have to say the Turks look quite brave.

OOh, you didn’t mean that kind of “pole”?

Similar sh*t that we had to look out for during The Red Army Faction and Badar Meinhof gangs period 50 years ago.

An Army-Navy game, where everyone wins!

Hopefully the boys of Team America put some hurt on Team Twerpy.

Were you in Germany during that time period? If so, where/when?
Feeling a tich introspective right now.
Maybe swap a few “there I was” stories on the side.
And now, to bed.

“U.S. soldiers, who carry the blood of our soldiers and thousands of Palestinians on their hands, cannot defile our country. Every time you step into these lands, we will welcome you as you deserve!”

I have to tell you, more and more I am wondering about Turkey’s true allegiance to NATO.

Yes, they are of strategic value but either they support the West, or they are no better than Hamas or Hezbollah.

Sapper3307

Yup!

Russia and china would be tickled pink if we went isolationist. That would be the final nail in the coffin of our status as a world leader and influence in what would shortly be a much smaller free world.

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Maybe instead of basing our world leadership on military prowess,we should base it on trade. Granting and withholding trade and access to US markets and materials.

DocV

Remind me again why they are in NATO? It’s kind of like letting a fox guard the chicken coop.

11B-Mailclerk

Because they were useful against Russia, especially before ICBMs were accurate and reliable.

Forest Bondurant

Something about The Straits of the Dardanelles…but their allegiance has been questionable.

Graybeard

Not a fan of the Turks, nor of their firearms.

Glad our boys are safe, and the Turkish police took their side.

USMC Steve

Gotta give them a pass on the firearms. They make some good stuff for the money.

Blaster

I have a Panzer Arms 12ga semi automatic in an M4 configuration that has been fun to shoot.

To clarify USMC Steve:

I don’t question the Quality of the products, but have reservations about sending my hard-earned money to them.

Hack Stone

We have the same thing here in America, but we call it Black Lives Matter.

I was in Golcuk, Turkey in 1985 for mid-deployment maintenance. The locals were great, and it was less than 2 hours by bus to Istanbul. It was one of the better ports we visited. My son’s Gator Freighter was in the exact same port, Izmir, 2 years ago. Crackpots or main stream? I don’t know what the world is coming to.

That “sack” that was thrown over his head was a plastic bag… that’s not an attempted kidnapping, it’s an attempted murder.

Andy11M

Just like the turks in Germany, alone they are total pussies, get them in a group and they are the toughest motherfuckers when going up against a single person.

Fyrfighter

Kinda like certain demographics here in the US..

David

My wife still gives me grief about an altercation with three of them in Frankfurt. As I fight barehanded about like Woody Allen, good thing the Polizei were quick to show up.

USMC Steve

You know, Turkey has been nothing but a pain in the ass since about the mid 1950’s. They serve no real useful purpose in NATO, and they hate us. We should avoid them like the plague.

jeff LPH 3 63-66

Now your talking turkey USMC steve, I’m 100% with you.

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Turkey has been nothing but a pain in the ass since about the mid 1950’s.” Since about when? I’d push that back about two thousand years since the proliferation of the sand chiggers.

I will give them a pass during Korea. They sent some primo quality troops to kill Chinamen during that war. Got some big time. After that, not too thrilled.

Hack Stone

Sounds like you are speaking of Hack Stone’s youngest sister.

Is that Sandy Stone?

No, Dumasa Stone.

I was in Southeastern Turkey in 04-05 working with the Orel-Kuvetlaren (sp?)

It was great and the Turkish Soldiers were awesome. Makes me wonder what it would be like now.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone was attacked by a wasp Saturday morning, or it could have been a hornet, Hack ain’t no entomologist.

Blaster

Did Hack establish dominion over said bug??

Hack Stone

Just have the Commanding Officer recall all troops back to ship, weigh anchor, and set sail for a Liberty Port that poses no threat to US service members. The local businesses that will lose millions of dollars pumped into the local economy by the GI’s will take some corrective action on the misguided yutes.

Blaster

It’s funny how money, or loss of income, can make those changes.

Except in Gaza with HAMASS!

Even Iran has proven to follow the money more than their hate of the Great Satan!

Jimbojszz

Iran is a brunch of Greedy bastards. It’s always been about the money. Oil.

Forest Bondurant

I can think of several other ports of call that would welcome the business. A few of them are further south of the Black Sea.

ElJefe

We pulled into Izmir a few times(’96 IIRC). I was on a Spru-can at the time. It wasn’t one of the touristy ports like Marmaris or Antalya, but a good time was had. I felt safer wandering back to the boat half-lit at 2am than I did in NY or Norfolk. We had no issues in Turkish ports during that cruise. It’s a very scenic part of the world. Too bad the shiiteheads took over. I won’t ever go back.
