Monday Bottomless Briefs

| August 19, 2024

First up, the Navy has a draft problem.

No, not that they need to institute one –  their sailors are about to FEEL one.

Specifically, service officials confirmed Friday that pants for the Navy Working Uniform, or NWU, the go-to uniform for most sailors, are out of stock at Navy Exchanges.

Courtney Williams, a spokeswoman for the Navy’s Exchange Service Command, told Military.com that it is “experiencing severe shortages of NWU trousers” both in physical stores and online.

Williams said that current pants stock levels are around 13% worldwide, and the exchange is focused on providing what inventory it has to new recruits at Recruit Training Command in Illinois, the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island, and the officer training schools.

Guess they don’t want their recruits BVDs flopping in the breeze? Is it significant that they can’t get a ‘working’ uniform – have they stopped? How can we tell? There’s just so many directions to go with this, and I’m not near inventive enough.

The issue appears to be coming from the Defense Logistics Agency, which manages acquiring and providing all the military branches with the myriad supplies and goods that they require.

Signs inside Navy Exchanges say that the shortage is “due to Defense Logistics Agency vendor issues.” Williams said that they have “been in communication with DLA on a timeline for the uniform’s production and supply chain.”

I’m sure DLA has been in crisis mode and just overlooked these….what, were they trying to get accountability for what we left in Afghanistan?

Lt. Meagan Morrison, a spokeswoman for the Navy’s personnel boss, told Military.com that the command has been getting word out to leaders in the fleet that, while the shortage is ongoing, sailors have other working uniforms — such as coveralls or its replacement, the “2POC” uniform — that they can be asked to wear.

2POC? Isn’t he dead?

Mikia Muhammad, a spokeswoman for the DLA, told Military.com in an email that while the agency has put out new contracts and expects initial deliveries in October, those will also go to places such as Recruit Training Command. Navy exchanges should expect “full support” starting in January.

So four months with limited uniforms….who says the Navy can’t learn from the Marines?

In April, the Marine Corps said that it was finally able to get more of its iconic woodland camouflage uniforms in stock for Marines after nearly two years of shortages. Military.com

All you Navy guys and guyettes – might want to start being a little nicer to your pantaloons, they’re going to have to last you a while.

They could stretch the life of the working uniforms by copying what corporate America does. There is a proud but humble woman owned business formerly located on Wilson Lane in Bethesda Maryland that has a Clothing Optional Friday. You can save a lot of man hours when employees don’t waste time pulling up the zipper after using the restroom.

Odie

One could save more time by not washing their hands as well afterwards. A smart man washes his hands when through, a wise man doesn’t pee on his fingers to begin with.

Hack Stone

Not an issue when you pee sitting down.

I’ve tried this in my local bar.
For some damn reason they always call the cops.

Stupid bar owners.

I don’t know how the current uniforms are constructed, but when the Army Woodland Camo uniforms came out, they had a double layer at the seat and never seemed (seamed?) to wear out.

Skivvy Stacker

Hell, when they went to camo in the Marines, they just gave us the leftovers from Vietnam.

Army-Air Force Guy

The first-gen BDU’s also had those large-ass “Elvis” collars.

26Limabeans

A shortage of shorts? Guess they’ll just have to take it in the shorts…..

Hack Stone

Just extend the Port/Starboard rack assignments to uniforms. Do we have to figure out all of the solutions for the DoD?

2POC is Kamala’s favorite living rapper. I like a lot of his stuff, especially when I’m feeling salty: 2Pac – Hit ‘Em Up (Dirty) (Music Video) HD (youtube.com). YMMV, and a definite language warning, but he had a talent that fit a demographic. Going from the punk rock scene of Richmond in the early-90s into the burgeoning Notorious B.I.G./Tupac beef and early Wu-Tang Clan, I’m a man of many musical interests. Though I still love “This Ole House” by Stuart Hamblen and other classics too.

The uniform issue seems to be indicative of a larger problem with today’s military, though I can’t say what that might be. I will say that the upside to recruiting woes is that there are less britches to have to worry about issuing. As an aside, are we going to have transwoman cuts that fit more snugly at the hip but have extra space for the crotch? Asking for a still-living friend (if you ask our alleged next pResident) you might have heard of: Moon Mullican. There’s a Jole Blon at my work, but I’m married and ain’t trying to get into anything stupid.

“transwoman cuts that fit more snugly at the hip but have extra space for the crotch”

Exactly the reason a lot of men wear womens panties.
High waist and no fly stitching to irritate your junk.

I’m trying to restrain my inner 12-year-old right now…

Don’t hurt yourself.. this is a safe space, go ahead and let’r fly!

Stay out of your sisters underwear drawer.

Royal Teens never had a short shorts problem

A little something for your musical interests. And probably true for some.

Sailorcurt

Apparently they needed to locate a new Indonesian sweat shop to make the uniforms in.

Back in ancient history, GW Bush was coming to Naval Station Norfolk to give a speech from the deck of a carrier in port. A bunch of us went to “see him speak” (actually it was to provide a nice image of supportive sailors for a backdrop, but they gave us time off work for it so why not?)

On the pier, just at the bottom of the gangplank were people handing out little American flags for us to wave. I found it very ironic that at the bottom of the flag, printed in tiny little print were the words “Made in China”.

And that was almost 30 years ago. It’s even worse now.

Odie

Did they have the correct number of stars and stripes?

Kinda hard to get your pants in a wad when you don’t have a bunch. The sailors can get glad in the same pants that got mad in. Oh…wait…they don’t have any pants.

Remember when there were cotton mills producing cloth in just about every (Southern for sure) town…along with sewing plants making clothing? I do…so does Pepper Ridge Farms. Thirteen Billion $ aircraft carriers, that don’t work, crewed by nekkid sailors. What could go wrong?

Time to bring back the Secret Naked Combat Warriors. Earl Littman was truly a legend among the classic era of Posers. Between his name and his video, Hack was hoping that he would paint my 1980’s vintage Jaguar for $29, making that car worth… $29.

You should bid to All-Points Logistics in Merritt Island, Florida.

Phil Monkress might take the contract.

The Cotton and Textile Mills, as well as those jobs went overseas not long after “Blowjob Willie” Clinton signed another trade deal, one which likely resulted in generous donations to the Clinton Foundation.

Doesn’t the Navy change their uniform every couple of weeks anyway? I never did Navy but I’ve heard that.

A Proud Infidel®™

Before I retired, my thought was that if a Soldier didn’t like one of the current uniforms, all he or she had to do was wait another six months until some General had another bright idea!

Green Thumb

Word.

A lot of CSMs and SGMs were voluntarily retiring in those days.

The ongoing PTSD and trauma…..

Skivvy Stacker

I think the Navy has more Dress Uniforms than the entire Star Trek series combined.

rgr769

Yes the even still have the whites with choker collars for officers and NCO’s. I think the Army did away with the whites back in the 70’s.

Mike B

Gee we didn’t seem to have this problem when everyone wore BDUs…..And the Navy wore. What the hell did the navy wear back then, Dungarees?

Then we all went with new service specific uniforms, that seemed to change every couple of years. I don’t know what the current AF uniform is.

I went from wearing Fatigues, to BDUs/DCUs, to ABUs before I retired in 2008. I think the AF has had two different utility uniforms since I retired.

26Limabeans

I can remember when the only people wearing cammies were SF.
Then everyone had their own shade and pattern so they came
up with the term BDU. Make everyone go back to plain old od.
And ball caps.

Eff No. Not the bus driver fatigues.

Back then, we had issued dungaree trousers and shirts and one could buy off the shelf “Seafarer’s” which were nice to wear.

26Limabeans

Just imagine the BDU patterns If Jill Biden designs them.

Army-Air Force Guy

Back when I was an AFRES C-130 crew chief I absolutely refused to wear the onesie if I was coming along on a cross country trip. Never saw myself as an aircrew member, never received survival training, etc.

Jimbojszz

I just heard the AF changed onesies. I just got a new onesie and it’s outdated with one flight. The Aux uses the same as active, but I have to buy mine. Just cant leave shit alone!

Skivvy Stacker

They’ve designed a new uniform for the Coast Guard. It’s also for the Coast Guard Auxiliary…supposedly. It will be 48 months before they will be available for us to purchase them. The redesign was started in 2019 and announced in 2021. The changeover was supposed to take place by now.
We DO have a new uniform for Vessel Inspections…it is prohibitively expensive for someone like me on a fixed income, who’s SSI all goes to my RENT, along with my SSDI, and Veteran’s disability income.
But, hey; I can’t complain. I know the gubmint is behind me…I feel them there every fuckin’ day.
