Shots fired after man spots thieves trying to steal catalytic converter in west Miami-Dade
Police: Multiple vehicles targeted in parking lot of apartment complex
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating after they say shots were fired Wednesday morning during an attempted theft in west Miami-Dade.
The incident was reported at an apartment complex, located at 8183 NW Eighth St.
According to Detective Andre Martin, the victim heard the sound of power tools in the parking lot of his apartment complex around 4:50 a.m.
The victim then went outside and spotted two people, wearing concealing clothing, underneath his vehicle trying to remove the catalytic converter.
Martin said the victim, who was armed with a gun, confronted the two thieves before they exchanged gunfire.

CHICAGO (WLS) — An alleged road rage shooting was caught on camera at a South Side gas station on Wednesday morning.Images of the brazen daytime road rage attack are chilling, especially for neighborhood residents who heard gunfire erupt in their Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
“I heard about six or seven gunshots and it sounded really close,” said neighborhood resident Yarnell Green.
The incident happened on Wednesday morning at the Falcon Fuel at the corner of 79th and Western Avenue just before 9 a.m. Several of the gas station’s many security cameras captured the crime. Video was shared by the business.
Authorities on the scene said what began as some type of argument between an unidentified motorist and a car porter for a nearby auto detail shop ended with gunfire.
Footage shows the two male drivers pulling into the gas station after some sort of altercation while driving southbound on Western Avenue.
The security video captured the 37-year-old auto detail shop worker getting out of the car he was driving, with a red tire iron in his hand, shortly after the motorist in a silver car pulls up next to him.

Two worrying issues with today’s society: catalytic converter theft and road rage. Down South, and likely up North as well, the former has become almost a meme. Meth addicts are the usual suspects, though I can imagine that crackheads and other addicts are also looking for that quick cash. Even seemingly legit people are taking them; we sold the 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC – C126 Market – CLASSIC.COM for around $500 when the in-laws’ house was sold a few years ago. It had been sitting for a while and needed work, but was definitely worth far more than that intact. Nevertheless, the buyer gave us the cash, then proceeded to cut off the converter before the rollback operator loaded it. Road rage: stay calm, be aware of your surroundings, and use diversionary tactics if possible. You might get a tailgater, move over when it’s safe (even in in the right-hand lane) and let them pass. If they stay behind you, turn onto a through street (not a dead-end or no outlet neighborhood), if the road rage driver turns with you, look for a traffic officer or police precinct; alternatively, go to a busy shopping center, but don’t park or get out. Of course, we all have little devices now that allow us to look up local police stations and call 911 or the non-emergency number from the safety of our vehicles. If the driver is in front of you, attempting to brake check or prevent you from passing, simply back off. Make a turn or time a traffic signal to where they go through it, but you have to stop. Or signal that you’re making a turn, wait for them to cut over (still backed off a ways), and suddenly decide “oops, I need to make a right, not a left”. Just because Colonel Colt had great success with his .36 ’51 Model doesn’t mean the the Middies will have success today. Now if the Middies could be as accurate and steady as my Colt’s Navy Model… Yes there is a faithful exact reproduction of said model that maintains a place of Honor here at Firebase Magnolia…down to the engraved scene of the Texas Navy taking on the Mexican Navy. “…selected a Confederate copy of the 1851 Navy to introduce the first replica Civil War-type firearms for shooters.” That would be Mr. Sam Griswold’s design that was built in his former cotton gin plant, in Griswoldville, Georgia. Considered to be one of the finest revolvers produced during The Late Unpleasantness, 3600 some odd were produced before the plant, and the entire town of Griswoldville, was burned to the ground in November of 1864.

I hate to say it but convertor thieves are going to continue to ply their trade as long as they have places to sell them. Until the local govt’s or even the state getas involved and officially licenses only select salvage operators to deal in converter to remove the ability to sell them it’s going to continue. If to sell one you have to be photographed and provide state issued ID that will locate the majority of thieves and reduce the number of thefts. You have to stop the fencing of the converters.

Personally I like the looks of the 1860 Army (as well as it being a .44 caliber) and the 1858 Remington (the strongest and arguably best of them.) Their lines just flow beter – but, that’s why there are 31 flavors…
Neither of those two pistols in the above pic are percussion. The Remington has been modified to fire metalic cartridges. Likwise for the Colt 1860 Army; its percussion cylinder has been replaced with a Kirst conversion cylinder chambered for .45 Long Colt ammo. Such conversions are in effect ghost guns, since their serial numbers are not retained anywhere but in the records of the manufacturers of them in their percussion form. Conversion cylinders have no serial numbers.
I can’t believe that some guy uses A Navy 1851 Colt revolver to shoot someone trying to steal his catalytic converter. Says so on the top of the story before you click to read the story. Tire iron VS hand gun don’t usually come out right. What irony
