Big week for base renaming
The former Ft. Hood, TX was renamed Ft. Cavazos Tuesday in honor of GEN Edward Cavazos, the Army’s first Hispanic 4-star.
The change at one of the country’s largest military installations follows efforts by the military to confront racial injustice and inequality in its ranks, particularly in the aftermath of the 2020 killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
I am sure George Floyd and those in the military will feel heartened by this. GEN Cavazos, who died in 2017, was not available for comment. Hopefully this will solve the seeming myriad of leadership problems at the former Ft. Hood.
Later this week, Ft. Benning will become the former Ft. Benning as it becomes Ft. Moore.
The name change honors retired Lt. Gen. Harold “Hal” and Julia Moore for their meaningful and lasting contributions to our soldiers, the Army, and the nation.
In addition to the installation name, the post is planning for the adjustment of multiple real property, buildings, and roads, as part of a multi-phased process to implement all approved recommendations of the Naming Commission, authorized by the NDAA, and directed by the Department of the Defense.
David thinks that by honoring Julia Moore that Hal Moore may have acquiesced.
You may remember that recently the Army admitted that the original estimate of $21,000,000 for the base renaming was off by a tad and the current estimate is $39,000,000.

Saint George’s been sober for 1,080 days now so I’d say it’s worth it.
Also, renaming ‘Fort Roh-Dog’ to ‘Camp Epstein’s Blackmail Cache’ so the FB(Lie) can’t find it.
The Pentagone over budget?! Someone fetch your roolah his clutching pearls!
Below, the official beverage of Fort Hood/Covas-ee-eh. Prost!
Don’t worry about the budget. Biden will 14th Amendment the budget up to 100 Quadrillion Dollars. They will need it to pay reparations. Newsome says reparations aren’t about money, it’s about the principle of the thing. Therefore no money is forthcoming from California, but lots of principals.
“PrinciPALs” = the people?
Or “princiPLEs” = the code of ethics and behavior?
(I used to get mixed up on those two as well, until someone taught me “the school princiPAL was my PAL”.
Principals are also people with controlling authority, JIC you thought was an accident.
Never was mine as a kid.
Gosh, if are going to name something after Hal Moore, Campbell makes a lot more sense.
Name Benning after Audie Murphy, Hood becomes Patton. These things practically name themselves. If George Patton were alive and in charge of Hood, we wouldn’t have all the problems at Hood. Powell would be a better name for Bragg, Meggelas would be better, or even better, Benavidez.
Must have been uneducated people on the committee.
The selection committee is shown a group of pictures and told to select the most “worthy” aka who’s the darkest. While I’m sure the General is worthy, he was probably a few shades darker than other Hispanic/Latino candidates.
Only $39M? You the whole name change is going to top a hundy-million when it’s all said and done.
I’d venture a guess that there were over-educated people on the committee. I support your recommendations 100%, however… you’re not putting diversity, equity, and inclusion first. You’re basing your decisions on merit, and meritocracy is a social construct based in white patriarchy, privilege, and colonialism. Therefore, you are a racist, sexist, misogynistic, paternalistic oppressor and must be cancelled. *NOTE* This was written with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek and with all the sarcasm I could muster. That doesn’t make it any less true in today’s world, though.
H/T to Boomer’s Sunday
I was a young captain serving in the Western Corridor of Korea in ’85 when GEN C (just retired) came and gave an OPD to the officers of 3rd Bde 2 ID. Bob Stack was in command. GEN C made a statement that has stuck with me for nearly 40 years: “The world is full of educated derelicts. Don’t be one”
I can feel the change and electricity in the air as we move forward. This is even more exciting than the Land O’ Lakes butter, boxed rice and pancake syrup changes.
Let the healing begin!
Really important shit, this.
It’s like getting a haircut, I already feel 10% better.
Time for Alvin Bragg to change his surname.

Clearly she’s on the side of having the freedom to rename bases. 😉
(Not to mention the freedom to spell things however she likes!)
She could’ve been referring to political poetry…;)
I think that’s Arielle Scarcella. She’s a life-long lesbian driven from own community because she was unwilling to suck another ‘woman’s d!ck’. So, she used verses instead of versus…we know what she meant.
It is. She is pretty conservative and has these strange ideas about men with a penis not being lesbians. Some of the videos she made of “lesbian men” hitting on her at bars are funny and yet a bit creepy.
She is also a Christian who believes that Bible verses do not prohibit lesbian relationships, and she may have a point. So there may be a double entendre going on there.
Speaking of penises…

A book called “The 5000 Year Leap” talks about this exact point. According to it, the Founders believed that it’s not about political parties. It’s about control which is measured on a sliding scale. On one end is “Anarchy” and on the other is “Totalitarianism”. Governments tend to move toward the totalitarian side in a grab for power.
The Founders, in a truly revolutionary manner, believed that the government that governs best, governs least. The sweet spot on the continuum is somewhere in the middle or leaning toward the anarchy side.
Stalin, a leftist, was on the Totalitarian end. Franco, a right-winger, was on the Totalitarian end. Pinochet, a right-winger. Mao…you get the idea. Political outlook isn’t the truly important part. The drive to control and repression is.
Very interesting book. I recommend it.
From the book:
“Government is defined in the dictionary as “a system of ruling or controlling,” and therefore the American Founders measured political systems in terms of the amount of coercive power or systematic control which a particular system of government exercises over its people. In other words, the yardstick is not political parties, but political power. Using this type of yardstick, the American Founders considered the two extremes to be anarchy on the one hand, and tyranny on the other. At the one extreme of anarchy there is no government, no law, no systematic control and no governmental power, while at the other extreme there is too much control, too much political oppression, too much government. Or, as the Founders called it, “tyranny.” The object of the Founders was to discover the “balanced center” between these two extremes. They recognized that under the chaotic confusion of anarchy there is “no law,” whereas at the other extreme the law is totally dominated by the ruling power and is therefore “Ruler’s Law.” What they wanted to establish was a system of “People’s Law,” where the government is kept under the control of the people and political power is maintained at the balanced center with enough government to maintain security, justice, and good order, but not enough government to abuse the people.”

Coca Cola was invented by a Confederate Colonel. They better get to renaming that also, or remove it from all of the bases. (insert sarcasm font here)

Sounds like he is trying to force the Federal Government to pay for it.
Even Democrats are leery of supporting an idea that 91% of voters in the US oppose. That would be really hard to explain at the voting booth.
Funny isn’t it? How voter ID laws were racist and evil… but forcing them to dig through their genealogy and mountains of immigration records to prove they are descendants of slaves/blacks who were in this country prior to 1900 is… not?
They still won’t be able to get an ID.

This administration. Wasted days, wasted nights and far far too much wasted tax dollars for nothing.
Let me get this straight… they thought it was less racist to name one of the worst posts in the entire country after a Hispanic?
Mother Julia Moore’s school for wayward boys.
This is interesting…
“David Moore was asked what his mother would think about Fort Benning bearing her name.”
“Little ol’ me? It’s about me,” he said, imitating his mom’s voice.”
“It’s about them. And David says his dad would have reluctantly accepted the honor.”
“I would say if my father were to know of this recommendation and was to know it was only about him, he would vehemently disagree and oppose it,” David Moore said.”
“However, given his humility, and given his love for his wife and the Army family, knowing that this renaming now provides the opportunity to honor Julia, and by honoring her, a spouse who followed him and who was devoted to him, devoted to his soldiers and never really got her due.”
“That would have swayed him, David said.”
“To realize that base renaming opportunity honor her, what she represents, her values, and lifts the Army family in terms of visibility and importance I believe he would approve of that,” David said.”

Absolutely.
I’d say Timothy Dalton for silver and Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig tied for bronze.
Roger Moore had some good films ( For Your Eyes Only, Live and Let Die, Octopussy ) but he also had the worst ( Moonraker, View to a Kill )
George Lazenby wasn’t bad, but he didn’t have a chance to get into the role.

Some of our kids were born at Benning. One parent was born at Benning. One sibling born at Bragg.
We were Army Brats at Gordan and Benning (One Dad was Signal, the other Infantry).
We both spent alot of time at Benning, Bragg, Lee, Polk while serving. TDYs at Hood, Pickett, AP Hill.
We will always FONDLY call those military posts with those names, not the new names and will go to our graves using the old names.
$39 Million WASTED Dollars that we the taxpayers are funding to appease a few.

ME TOOOOO! I was born at Ft. Benning, younger brother born at Ft. Bragg!!
I guess I’ll just have to tell people I was born in Columbus from now on.
I’ve been infantry or armor since 1986. Four schools at Benning and one tour there. I’ve got no problem dumping the name Benning. Moore was The Man and far more worthy of emulating than is BG Henry Benning. What did he do, again? Seriously, someone tell me anything Benning did but be used to placate the South. I’m all for tradition but the army’s history is filled with changed names. Personally, I think the reason we are changing names is dumb, and it’s a waste of money, but in and of itself, Benning to Moore is a win. The others? Not so much. And it’s a tragedy that Benavidez didn’t get picked for Bragg.
Has there ever been a Fort Mosby? Naval Station Semmes?
Two genuine leaders with great success for the CSA (though Semmes is due some small criticism for throwing his sword overboard).
Will their names and contributions now be removed from every reference in military education?
There was a USS Semmes DDG-18, in the fleet, decommissioned 1991.
Thank you.
From all accounts, a great naval commander (as a ground pounder, I know nothing of the sea).
I aim to buy a boat – one big enough to cross the oceans. I don’t want to name my vessel after a man (I never want to dock in a man, period), but I’d like to pay homage to Semmes in some manor.
Suggestions?
Good question on Benning. I have no clue. Bragg, I think can be safely regarded as a horrible general and nothing to be proud of.
Stonewall Jackson, on the other hand, was a genius. There used to be a Boomer named for him IIRC.
Waterman Steamship Company had two merchant ships in world trade named after CSA generals — the SS Stonewall Jackson and the SS Robert E. Lee. Both scrapped around 2003-2005. Believe a third vessel of the same type (LASH vessel) was the SS Sam Houston.
Does this mean racism has ended?
Can we get on with our lives now?
It will not end until the last bottle of Aunt Jemima syrup has been used, the last box of Uncle Ben’s is consumed, and Cream of Wheat is no longer pasty white.
Whatever…It should have been renamed Fort Audie Murphy, not “Fort some general I never heard of. “
This was the perfect chance to honor the greatest infantryman who ever lived and give recruits something to aspire to. They blew it. Then they wonder what the hell is wrong with recruitment.
He went from Private to Company Commander in less than two years.
“As the company awaited reinforcements on 26 January, he was made commander of Company B.
The Germans scored a direct hit on an M10 tank destroyer, setting it alight, forcing the crew to abandon it. Murphy ordered his men to retreat to positions in the woods, remaining alone at his post, shooting his M1 carbine and directing artillery fire via his field radio while the Germans aimed fire directly at his position. Murphy mounted the abandoned, burning tank destroyer and began firing its .50 caliber machine gun at the advancing Germans, killing a squad crawling through a ditch towards him. For an hour, Murphy stood on the flaming tank destroyer returning German fire from foot soldiers and advancing tanks, killing or wounding 50 Germans. He sustained a leg wound during his stand, and stopped only after he ran out of ammunition. Murphy rejoined his men, disregarding his own injury, and led them back to repel the Germans. He insisted on remaining with his men while his wounds were treated.”
Keep in mind he had already by this date been awarded the DSC, SSX2, BSMX2, PHX2.
I did read up on General Richard E. Cavazos. He is totally legit and not a bad choice.

Rock on … love the totenkopf.
Fort Rupal is the way I would go…..
Fort Chelsea Manning
Stunning and brave
Don’t give them any ideas.
Will the Army also remove any and all references to confederate officers and soldiers from all FM’s and OESand NCOES?
All we heard for, at least two years, was the Wing is moving to England. All the field grade officers held briefings where we hoi polloi were told it wasn’t true. One day, all of the pilots and WSO’s got orders to England. The rest of the base was happy because we were going to England. Think again said the saluteables; you guys aren’t going anywhere. Yes, the planes were going; but, due to the cost of redoing letterheads on stationary, reprinting manuals and other official documents, the signs on the base, etc, the wing was staying put.
We got different airplanes but the base name; and the wing, group, and squadron numbers stayed the same.
So, over 45 years ago someone kept an eye on the costs of name changing.
I do hope some good will come of these changes. However, the NCO in me keeps asking what in the world of politics is coming next.
What’s next, Fort Boy George?
Do you really want to hurt me?🤣
I work on FT Bragg. Everyone there will still be calling it FT Bragg until they die.
At least Provo’s Privy is still safe.
Comms are back up, so is my BP. Gonna comment b4 I read the others, something I seldom, if ever do. Probably gonna step on some toes/piss some off but, Frankly My Dear, I don’t give a damn. I am purely sick and tired of the rush to destroy and/or disparage all things Southern. My own RINO Kongress Kritter is all over this committee and has turned a deaf ear to We, The People. Austin Scott in case you’re curious. I won’t debate the issue of the worth of some of the Rebs that these posts were named for back yonder. Bragg was a political hack and Hood, tho a fine Brigade and Division Commander became a political hack and destroyed a damn fine Army of Tennessee at Franklin and Nashville. These destroyers of all things Southern forget the reason these Posts were named for who they were. A move toward a final re-unification of these states united and a hope to add plenty of Southern Boys to the start of the Global Wars. The Southerns followed the words of THE Greatest Military Mind EVAH, Robert E. Lee, when they went back home and worked to rebuild what the Federal Armies destroyed. And don’t even bother with the whole causes of that tragedy. The War was brought on by money grubbing, power hungry politicians and it drug on because of Ring Knockers, political hacks, and the MIC of the period. Ironic that the name changes are happening this week. The Band, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. May 10th was the date that Jeff Davis was captured and is thought by many to be the ending. Stoneman might have torn up the Danville Train, but not before he had his ass handed to him by some Georgia Boys at Sunshine Church. Grant and Sherman won by starving out their opponents, Southern and Native. I guess that the powers that be figure they won’t need any good old boys in their army since they have allowed all of the immigrants to invade and will just surrender to the ChiComs. Deo… Read more »

Thought you might approve of my post. It was late30 when I posted it and figured you had missed it. Tracked my Grandpappies back the Scots/Irish that arrived here in the late 1600 as indentured servants (read WHITE Slaves) They worked for their freedom and my people have served in every conflict since the F&I War. Nearly 30 that wore the gray and a few very distant cousins that wore the blue. VERY distant cousins. Got some grand pappies and uncles laying in unmarked graves far from home and others that upon release from POW Camps like Camp Douglas, Point Lookout, and Hellmira, walked all the way back to central Georgia and lost their farms to taxes during Reconstruction. No slave owners here that I’ve found and them becoming sharecroppers kept the family in economic bondage for many years. They proudly served the US Military despite the fact the memories of the war and destruction of the South was still very fresh and in many cases, very visible. There are still “Sherman Sentinels” (chimneys from burned homes) and “Sherman Neckties” (rails bent around trees) along his march route. Deo Vindice.

This is Good that many of our forts are being renamed for good people and not American traitors like the rebs. WHY those forts were named for traitorous southerners is beyond me.
Congrats. Your Tango Alfa Hotel name is Drifty.
AW1
If it truly is beyond you, maybe you should spend just a bit of time researching history.. Many commenters above laid out the basics of why, if you don’t want to do the research yourself.
One suspects a great many things are beyond you.
Har’ I learn you some…
There is a lot to unpack here, doubt you will grasp it all.
There was a war between the states, and one key goal when it ended was to reunite the country. If we were going to welcome Southerners back into the fold, we couldn’t very well view them all as traitors and enemies in perpetuity.
Most of the posts were named during the WWI Era. The military officials in charge of naming the posts, including Brig. Gen. Joseph E. Kuhn, set only the vaguest of rules: The names should honor officers who had a connection to the region and who were “not unpopular” in the area, and they should be short, to save “clerical labor.”
The Constitution expressly prohibits a standing Federal Army and so we didn’t have one. The Militia Act of 1916 brought the State militias under Federal Control. This didn’t set well with the states. Because travel was still difficult, Most of the time the soldiers went to the closest base for training.
WWI Era was also during a time of a revival of Racism. Woodrow Wilson was President and he was a virulently racist Southerner. He segregated the Civil Service and suppressed blacks during most of his terms. He disbanded many of the Buffalo Soldier units. He was also an opportunist that saw a chance to score points by naming the bases in Southern areas after “Lost Cause” Generals, even when they sucked.
So… TLDR? Don’t understand?
Short version: It was all Democrats.
Funny. No one had a problem with these names until about 160 years after the war ended.
Quit huffing the floor wax, you dolt.
