Weekend Open Thread
Socialism and communism are supposed to improve people’s quality of living and work via equity and other concepts. In practice, socialism and communism show other forms of effectiveness, such as in this graphic. Enjoy your weekend.

FIRST!
ALL HAIL THE ROH-DAWG! THIS WEEK’S RECIPIENT OF THE WOT CROWN OF FIRSTS.
(now where’s the seegars, Crown Royal & cats heads?)
Two-in-a-ROW, bay-bee!
Now, while the WoT FoFs is absent, grovel at your own pace.
Household 6 wants to go fishing…. woe is me.
Reb, BEER RUN! Hit it!
Was unloading case lots of Messrs Miller and Yuenglings’ finest elixirs as we speak. THAT is what caused the delay on my post. Imma guessing you be wanting me to fry up some bacon and bake a pan of catheads too, huh?
What? No cornbread?
Just so happens, Mi’Lady (so VERY GOOD to hear from you again!), I picked up a jug of buttered milk and a 10 pounder sack of cornmeal during my provision run today. Was planning on some buttered milk Southern Cornbread (sans sugar), some (BEAT) Navy beans with country ham bits (been per-curl-ating lowly in the crocked pot all day), fil-ets of cat fish, home fries, and cold slaw for supper. How about a carafe’ of the House Wine…Sweet Iced Tea while you wait?
Make it “ice tea no sweet” and it’s a deal. I have a pan of Shepherd’s pie in the fridge. I will run that up tomorrow. I have a bit of stocking up to do this next week. That and some cornbread w/butter, and later on chocolate ice cream, will make me happy.
Good to hear from you.
I can make “ice tea no sweet” (shudder). Prolly not the only sin that the Spirit’s of my Ancestors will haunt me for.
So happy you are back. Missing your wit and wisdom
Thanks. Not dead yet, and glad the geese are back on time. Still have snow in some areas up here in my AO. And Ryan Hall’s weather guesser show is a huge help. All that cold air being pulled south toward the Rockies and the Great Lakes is keeping my furnace busy.
Ryan Hall’s the best thing to happen to weather news in years…
Not Bud Light, though.
We bow to your FIRSTNESS, My Liege. You had some “stiff” competition, but manged to “bone” your way a “head”. That recon by fire that The King of Battle laid down for you musta helped.
See above for your marching orders, number 2.
(low-key, here’s the his royalness’s credit card. Beer, bourbon, baby back ribs, spearsguses, and tater salad for all. Cigars, boxes worth. The market is donedone kicking my nuts)
Baby Backs….
Is that beef or pork?
Pork. Or long pig.
The secret’s in the sauce.
Wow…just wow.
What about the gender expansive en drab grrls who prefer Bid Light? Asking for a friend who name begins with Commiss….?

Dang, Roh-Dog … good job getting here two seconds ahead of me!
Well, having been narrowly defeated for the coveted, always-earned, never-given FIRST of the WOT by Roh-Dog, I am going to slink off to my corner in abject dejection. But before I do, I want to leave the trivia column behind for those who like such silly things. Rats of the Cong, Roh-Dog, and to the rest … trivia for all.
DID YOU KNOW…?
Does a town in Ohio have a lot of places named “Hitler”?

Normally by this time in April, I’m singing along with Al Jolson about “April Showers.”
If you don’t know who Al Jolson was, then I must say I consider your education to be woefully inadequate. Jolson was the premier entertainer of his time … and if you had asked him, he would’ve told you that himself.
Showers are needed, of course, to help the “flowers that bloom in May” happen. Maybe not so much of them, perhaps, but we do need some rain from time to time.
So, whenever April showers come along, let the spirit of Jolson bring you to trivia … like the stuff which follows. Enjoy.
Did you know …
… women smell better than men? No, not in the obvious way you’re thinking (though they do) … rather, in the acuity of their sense. Women are better than men at discerning and identifying different smells. (If you’ve ever wondered how your wife can detect that perfume aroma, now you know.)
… the story behind the nickname “Jack” for John is quite an involved one? To put it simply – which ain’t easy, belive me – back in medieval England, a man named John might have also had his name parsed as Johnkin … which would devolve into Jankin … then to Jackin … finally to Jack. (None of it applies to me, since my real name isn’t John. And my deepest thanks to a dear friend whose initial question suggested this.)
all redheads are distantly related to each other? In fact, anyone who carries the gene for red hair – whether or not it manifests itself – is directly descended from the first person ever to have red hair. That particular gene first appeared between 30,000 and 80,000 years ago. (Now if you tell me that person’s name was Eve, we’ve got a real item here.)
… a President of the United States went through an unofficial name change? The 18th President, Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. His name was recorded incorrectly as Ulysses Simpson Grant when he was admitted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and rather than create a problem for the Academy registrars, Grant just chose to use it as his name from then on. (I’d have changed it if I were him … imagine having the monogram HUG.)
… a difference exists between two common names for impaired driving? Most states use DUI, or driving under the influence, to indicate that status. But some also use DWI, which means driving while intoxicated. The difference, you ask? If you are charged with DWI, you are driving under impairment because of alcohol. A charge of DUI, on the other hand, can also include impairment due to drugs. (Both of them are bad news any way you look at it.)
a town in Ohio has roads and a pond named Hitler? The town of Circleville, Ohio, sports a Hitler No. 1 Road, Hitler No. 2 Road, Hitler Pond, Hitler Cemetery, and other places with the name. But none of it is named after German Führer Adolf Hitler (1889-1945). Instead, they’re named after one of the first settlers of the area, George Hitler (1763-1818) and his family. The Hitlers of Ohio were – and are – very honest, hard-working, down-to-earth folks who farmed the land. Their descendants – still using the name – live there today. And the people of Circleville don’t bat an eye when they talk about the Hitler family … they take it in their stride and have no issues with it. (The Hitlers of Ohio … sounds like a great name for a situation comedy.)
… the first cookbook published in the United States was printed in 1742? Called Compleat Housewife, or Accomplished Gentlewoman’s Companion, the book was printed in Williamsburg, Virginia that year. (With some fabulous recipies, I have no doubt!)
… more than half of the single people in American haven’t had a date in the last two years? (Yeah, I know. How well I know.)
… aardvarks are allergic to radishes? If you think that’s odd, consider … they’re only allergic to them during summer. (Makes you wonder what changes in the radishes, doesn’t it?)
… a Soviet movie in 1924 depicted a fictional trip to Mars? Aelita, the Queen of Mars was a silent film depicting a Russian engineer’s trip to the Red Planet, where he saves the Martians from the “evils of capitalism.” The engineer even falls in love with the film’s title character, Aelita, Queen of the Martians – before we see it was all actually a daydream. The film was based on a short story by Alexei Tolstoy (1883-1945) and, in its performances in Leningrad, the music that accompanied the movie was performed by its composer, Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975). (Gotta get a print of that film some time.)
sometimes it does matter what a product is called? For instance, at one point in time, the prune industry asked the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to relabel prunes as “dried plums.” Asked why, the industry line was that “prunes” were not selling. It worked. (Did it ever.)
… the most germ-laden place in your toilet is probably not where you think it is? Sure, most of us think the seat, or the bowl. Nope … it’s the flush handle. (I refuse to devolve this column into toilet humor.)
… an actor making a movie was trailed by the FBI? Sacha Baron Cohen (born 1971) was filming the movie Borat in 2005-2006 when the FBI assigned a team of agents to watch him. The team was assigned after the agency received numerous reports of “a Middle Eastern man traveling through the Midwest in an ice cream truck.” (Considering it was Sacha Baron Cohen, it was suspicious.)
Now … you know!
April showers, funny you should mention them:
If April Showers bring may Flowers and Mayflowers bring Pilgrims, then how did herpes get here?
On the Captain’s dinghy.
Thankyuhverymuch, don’t forget to tip the Veal and try the Waitress!
Communism. Someone described it as “trickle up poverty”.

Hack Stone just received a phone call that Elaine Ricci is being held for vehicular manslaughter for crashing a 1980’s vintage Jaguar while driving drunk into a crowd of Japanese tourists in Tiajuana. It seems that in order to secure her release, we need to wire $10,000 in Target gift cards to the District Attorney handling the case. Please be generous.
Let me be the first to step up. Card number is:
GGYT86FUYTFYTE54DIO8T5S4SDUKYVHRW35W8750R86R8OFT5U3S35W875DLUSR4266URSOUTCLU6R7O65DXWXYJRWS5Y4WSYKUXGKLU6KRI57WEU54ASKYTZXR5Y76FILHVLPY08621H99UTVG VGVOUGCVUOCJYCYUT864W42471IYRXKYD5I7TD 75ERY1190U865E7DYGCFK
That should be a $5 card.
While driving through a rural area yesterday, I noticed a line of 10 mailboxes on a 2×6 frame. The first 3 from the left had been PSULed, as they had no doors. 😉
Elaine needs to lay off the tequila, it will make you think you are Jesus.
Present.
Brother had a TIA Wednesday, some complications after.
He’s ok for now, probably be here all weekend.
Hope y’all have a great weekend.

Two US Army Apache helicopters crash in Alaska, killing at least 3 soldiers | Fox News
I work at Ft Wainwright and we were dealing with it as it happened, granted our portion was very, very small. The Air Force did an awesome job of assisting.
Still alive here in South Korea.
Wishing Jack Texiera takes a long walk off a short plank.
58th anniversary of Operation Power Pack. About 4000 troopers of the 1st of the 508 82ND Airborne deployed from Pope AFB and 500 Marines from the USS Boxer to the Dominican Republic to stem a civil war. Other than myself only SJ was part of this operation. I was a medic with the 307th Medical Batt.
For the two-year commemoration, a large party of Pentagon brass flew into Bragg for a briefing on that operation, conducted by my boss, the 2D Brigade/82D commander. Young staff NCO Poe got to run the slide projector for him, which luckily didn’t break down in mid-briefing for once.
It was very informative for Poe who’d been in the 101st at the time of the operation.
did they mention that the initial DZ was a field next to San Isidro air field that had grass covering coral, we would have suffered at least 80% injured if we had to jump. Also I remember that we lost 44 US personnel 27 from the 82nd.
As it was a senior Airborne commander briefing, he most likely paid close attention to details like that affecting airborne operations, but truth is, Bill, this old almost 82 yo brain simply can’t recall any details from that long ago.
You have me by 2 years so I understand completely. I had just came back from a year in Korea with the 1st Cav, had a 30 day leave and reported to Bragg on 1 April and promptly went through refresher course to get jump qualified, the month of April was a very busy time for me. I am amazed I remember any of it.

Forest Gump was correct.
I say they follow that rabbit down the hole as far as it will go.
Don’t you mean gerbil instead of rabbit?
Depends on how used the gimp is, I’d presume.
Remember when Pulp Fiction was shocking and not an event at the public library every other Saturday…?
Public Library? Don’t you mean the library at the elementary school? kindergarten? This is story time now. Need to train the kids on how to use sex toys on trannys and dance sexy for daddy.
People have lost their fucking minds.
Is it any wonder that homeschooling has increased 600%? Some districts now have 26%+ of their students home schooled. With 10% of students attending private school and another 10% not going at all barely half of all students go to public school anymore.
There is something wrong with my news media. A tale of two news stories.

vs
https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/29/us/cleveland-texas-shooting/index.html
There is something about them that is different but can’t quite put my finger on it.
And MSNBC, who never passes the opportunity to bathe in the blood of children says; “
O“If the shooter makes it across the border to Mexico, they will only extradite him if we agree not to seek the death penalty, which he so richly deserves.
Seriously doubt Texas will ever go along with that. He murdered five people in cold (if drunken) blood.
Dunno, but those seem to be the same link.
Gezz, they sure are. Meant to post this one.

Compare that to CNN.
There was a clown they brought on TV last during the draft that introduced a pick.
Dude wore a VFW COS hat from Kansas, 1LT rank / Armor Branch insignia on an old school fatigue shirt with a few patches on it. Looked like a short and airborne tab to boot.
Dude said he was a retired Vietnam Vet LTC. Looked like shit and appeared dirty. Never seen a LTC dress or make a public appearance that way. If the real deal, and that’s a big IF, he was a fucking embarrassment.
Just an observation.
Anyone else see him?
The nfl? People still watch that?
Interesting. His son is Direct of Programs for the VFW.

But here he is, Colonel, not LTC. If he is a phony he is living the dream. Check out the photo bank. I’m willing to wager a $20 donation to the board he isn’t a phony. Prove me wrong. Any takers?
https://www.facebook.com/lynn.rolf/
I’ll tell you what though, if he is a phony there would be a great unraveling in Leavenworth, KS.
He might be legit.
But I have never seen a LTC (or COL I guess) in this case, look and act like that.
Unprofessional.
Who knows.
Seems to be a legit grad of the Academy, Class of 1970. That’s a pretty big indicator.

I’ve seen worse, that’s for sure.
I have problems with that Americal patch and the two subdued tabs above it.
