Common sense replaced by federal law

| August 4, 2009

How many of you think that texting while driving your car is a good idea. Raise your hands. That’s what I thought…none of you. There are sufficient local laws that make it it illegal to talk to talk on your cell phone and text while you’re driving. Have any of you seen less incidents of people phoning and driving? Of course not. Mostly because we know that the government doesn’t really intend to enforce those laws. it’s just their way of trying to convince us that bureaucrats care about us.

That’s why the President is initiating a dialogue about texting and driving according to Fox News;

The Obama administration will convene a summit of experts to figure out what to do about the problem of texting while driving, a practice studies and a growing number of accidents show can be deadly.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will announce his decision to gather senior transportation officials, safety advocates, law enforcement representatives, members of Congress and academics who study distracted driving at a news conference Tuesday. The summit will take place next month.

Really? We need to talk about it? We need “a summit of experts” gathered at taxpayer expense to tell us what we already know? Texting and driving is bad. No amount of education and television public service ads are going to stop people from doing it – without a serious enforcement of laws.

But government doesn’t enforce laws anymore. Legislators justify their pay checks by writing volumes of laws without the benefit of the means to enforce the laws. So when the first laws don’t work, they write more. Look at firearms laws – a perfect example of unenforced laws.

So legislators buy your vote with their good intention – even though you never intend to obey the laws they write.

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t a “growing number of deaths” coming from texting while driving a train??

You want to know what the government cares about? Revenue–which is all these new laws are intended to provide.

This is like when Obama devoted an entire day to talk about the “importance of fatherhood”. Can this guy at least devote his time to shit that is actually in the constitution (uh, national defense anyone). Obama is like my dorky 4th grade teacher except he probably doesn’t get shitfaced on weekends.

I can text without looking. My lawyer friends taught me. TSO, you’ll need to perfect that skill. It’s how they communicate in court.
