Sikhs sue Marine Corps to allow turbans, beards at all times

RYAN MORGAN

A group of observant Sikh plaintiffs is suing the U.S. Marine Corps this week for the right to wear their turbans and grow their beards at all times, in accordance with their religious practices.

Marine Capt. Sukhbir Singh Toor and pre-accession Marine recruits Milaap Singh Chahal, Aekash Singh and Jaskirat Singh filed a lawsuit on Monday afternoon, with support from the Sikh American Veterans Alliance (SAVA), arguing that the Marine Corps should allow them to wear their long-hair, beards and turbans in all settings, including deployments.

The four Sikh plaintiffs are being represented by the Sikh Coalition, which advocates on behalf of the faith. In a Tuesday press release, Sikh Coalition said the Marine Corps had granted Toor “a historic, but incomplete and inadequate, accommodation.” The accommodation let Toor wear his beard and turban, except when on deployment.

“At present, their incomplete accommodations bar them from maintaining their beard and unshorn hair (one of the five Sikh articles of faith) on deployments where they would receive Hostile Fire or Imminent Danger pay, even though deployment to the front lines is essential to service in the USMC,” Sikh Coalition said of the plaintiffs.

Likely a done deal- the Army caved on this during the Obama administration. Thanks, gentlemen.

The Corps should not cave. Service is not a right but a privilege. They can be Sikhs or Marines. Not both.

I would say let them be both. However service before self. If they can’t conform to regulations, sorry about your luck.

I’d like to see one of these assclowns try to put a flight helmet on over a turban.

Here’s how they do it in India:

I’ve see a lot of younger Sikhs here in Silly-Con Valley wearing the “small” turban — it’s similar to a bathing cap.

And here’s India’s answer to a helmet:

https://www.firstpost.com/india/in-a-first-combat-helmet-designed-for-sikh-soldiers-all-you-need-to-know-about-veer-head-cover-10385561.html

New Delhi: The Indian army has commissioned specially designed combat helmets for the country’s Sikh soldiers. The helmets to be produced by Kanpur-based Global Defense and Homeland Security Company MKU will provide ballistic protection to the soldiers.

A Sikh soldier could wear the helmet without any difficulty under his turban in the line of duty. So far, there were no helmets that suits the requirement of Sikh soldiers in India and across the world.

“…Army caved on this during the Obama administration….”

Dunno. When I was waiting for OCS in 1979-80 I saw a Sikh — an American soldier — turbaned & bearded walking around Ft. Benning; his turban was either khaki or OD — I don’t recall the actual color. He wore the bracelet but no kirpan (dagger). I recall reading an article about him later explaining that in lieu of an actual dagger, he carried a photo-image and that satisfied his religious obligation.

The photo of the dagger is SOP and Sikh religion approved for all males Sikhs as an alternative to actually carrying the dagger.

When I was in, the Marines were the only service branch that stuck to the grooming standards of the “High and Tight” haircut, no sideburns, close trimmed moustashe, and clean shaven face.
When you look back at photos of the other services from back then (mid to late 70s), men from the Army, Navy, and Air Force all look like they’re in the Reserve Components, or are just civilians wearing their old uniforms.
I didn’t really like the grooming standards. No young man of the 70s did. But I swallowed my disgust, and followed the rules, and waited until I was discharged before lifting my middle finger to the Corps by letting my hair grow, and starting a beard.
