It’s all warm and fuzzy to make a claim to an Open Thread FIRST, but here’s the deal. Your basic Open Thread of HOT (Holiday Open Thread), ROT (Random Open Thread), or MOT (Mid-Week Open Thread) gets you, at best, a notation of your FIRST penciled in on the margins of a possibly outdated desk calendar somewhere. Only the Coveted (EARNED NEVER AWARDED) TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread FIRST is recorded the the Hallowed Book of FIRST. And we all know who is King of that FIRSTNESS! ‘sides all that, iffen the Claimant to the Title of FIRST on an Open Thread doesn’t provide some snacky stuff, refreshing beverages, and a little something to puff on, the D’Weeded Miscreants and Adorable Deplorables won’t pay a whole lot of attention.

In Missouri we got Washington’s, and were jealous of the Illinois kids who got both.

Did you know there is a bill out there for a new Federal Holiday? “Gold Star Families Day”, the last Monday in September. From Elizabeth Warren but garnering bipartisan support.
Sounds like a good idea. Here’s why not, according to a couple dozen Gold Stars with whom I’ve spoken-
1) IF there is to be another Federal holiday, make it November 11th, and have it ON November 11th, don’t create just another three-day weekend.
2) “the family’s sacrifice”. Nope. The Fallen made the sacrifice. Putting the focus on the family diminishes the honor and recognition of the Fallen. These families did nothing different than the families of everyone else who served.
4) Since 1936, the last Sunday in September, by Presidential Proclamation is “Gold Star Mothers Day”, many states also have the last Saturday of September “Gold Star Family’s Day” already.
Stop virtue signaling from atop the headstones of Heroes.
A very heartfelt and very level-headed approach, OAM. And to hell with idiotic spot-light grabbing/virtue-signalling politicians – it’s the Gold Star Mothers that should be making any and all of those decisions. Period.
For the record – hearing any make-mention of Elizabeth Warren’s name, never mind anything she has to say – fake ancestry claims, etc – just makes me want to puke…

Thanks Hatchet. I admit, that name being a sponsor automatically puts me off as well. However, in the vein of, “Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut”, I had to look at what was suggested. Sadly, that blind squirrel seems to continue to be the exception to the rule.
