Weekend Open Thread

Many among the left insist that business owners should share their profit equally with all the workers. Would these same leftists agree that the workers should also bear equal responsibility for paying the business owners’ debts? Enjoy your weekend.

With a tip o’ the cap and a bow of respect to Sparks, here’s the trivia for the week. I hope you enjoy it! DID YOU KNOW…? Did an actual fight between two actors make the final print of a movie? By Commissioner Wretched didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com Another year, another milestone. Not for the column, but for me. In just under two weeks, I celebrate another trip around the Sun, and I pause for reflection on my approaching 63rd birthday. Despite the fact that almost nothing I’d planned for my life turned out the way I wanted it to, I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. I’ve been an exceedingly lucky man. The best part is what brought me here, to this column, and to you. The fact that you enjoy what I do here is amazing and wonderful and awe-inspiring, so I plan to keep writing it. Let’s get to this week’s trivia! Did you know … … Massachusetts once had a law allowing a parent to kill a son? In 1646, the colony of Massachusetts enacted the “Stubborn Child Law,” permitting a parent to execute an unruly son who had reached the age of 16 or older, which was not repealed until 1973. (Better late than never, I guess.) … it is illegal in Sterling, Colorado, for a pet cat to be allowed to run loose without a tail light? (You can always tell who was silly enough to try this. Count the scratches.) … a survey taken in Japan in 2000 said that instant noodles are the best invention of the twentieth century? The second-greatest invention, according to those who responded, was karaoke. (Never mind computers, airplanes, or the wheel. Maybe we can sing about noodles?) … the nation of Tonga once issued a postage stamp in the shape of a banana? It was also the first-ever self adhesive stamp issued, back in 1972. (That stamp had real a-peel.) … zebras cannot be domesticated? Unlike their cousins, the horses, zebras do not meet the necessary criteria for domestication. To become domesticated, an animal must have a generally good disposition… Read more »

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/criminal-justice/ct-chicago-homicide-victim-fraud-federal-charges-covid-payments-20210916-3ot7dojtfjattpuwrid7njmmcy-story.html

“A South Side woman has been hit with federal fraud charges alleging she obtained death certificates of dozens of young Chicago murder victims by claiming she was a relative and later used their stolen identities to collect thousands of dollars in tax refunds and COVID-19 stimulus payments.”

“Among the victims of the scam allegedly perpetrated by Katrina Pierce was Amari Brown, a 7-year-old boy fatally shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on July 4, 2015, according to a criminal complaint made public Thursday in U.S. District Court charging Pierce with wire fraud .”

“The 34-page complaint alleged Pierce, 50, had posed as Amari’s aunt when requesting his death certificate in 2019, then used the stolen information to file a fraudulent tax return that garnered a $4,400 refund check from the IRS.”

“Pierce was arrested Tuesday and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Young Kim, who ordered her held in custody pending trial, court records show.”

“According to prosecutors, Pierce was sentenced in 2012 to 11 years in federal prison for using stolen identities and other fraudulent documents to steal more than $200,000 in federal tax refunds and state child-care benefits.”

“A check of the bureau’s database revealed that Pierce had requested a total of 37 death certificates in 2019 alone, and succeeded in obtaining 26 of them, according to the complaint. All of them were for homicide victims ranging in age from 2 to 22 years old, mostly from Chicago’s South and West sides, the complaint stated.”

“The charges alleged Pierce used death certificate information to qualify for earned income or child tax credits on false tax returns she later filed under fictitious names and businesses. She also used the information to illegally collect thousands of dollars in stimulus payments related to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“The Pentagon is hoping to get to the bottom of a mysterious illness dubbed “Havana syndrome” that’s been plaguing personnel since 2016. First reported by The New York Times, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin issued a memo to all employees — service members, civilians, and contractors — urging them to look out for unusual symptoms of “Anomalous Health Incidents,” or AHI, on Sept. 15. Central Intelligence Agency director William Burns told NPR in July that it’s believed at least 200 Americans have been injured by the puzzling illness.”

“As part of a government-wide effort,” Austin wrote in the one-page memo, “the Department is committed to finding the cause and source of these AHI and ensuring that affected individuals receive appropriate medical care as quickly as possible when needed.”

Can anyone please explain to me why a person who has been vaccinated for COVID still needs to wear a mask?

Why is it that folks who received a Flu shot (before COVID) were not required to wear a mask?

Commissar?

LC?

What ever happened to Common Sense?

Impeach 46.

LC

Been a bit busy, so forgive the lack of references, but you’re asking two different questions:

Can anyone please explain to me why a person who has been vaccinated for COVID still needs to wear a mask?

The dominant variant, delta, seems to have much higher viral loads than the original strain. It basically replicates extremely fast. And your body takes some time to ramp up defenses when fighting an infection. So, as I understand it, you can have a notable viral load that, as a vaccinated person, you’re very likely to successfully fight off,… but can still spread to others in the interim.

In short, it’s just about reducing community spread, given the high viral load. If the viral load were much lower, you’d have a far lower chance of spreading it to someone before you fight it off.

Why is it that folks who received a Flu shot (before COVID) were not required to wear a mask?

I’d guess the primary reason is that we have no indication that the flu is transmissible before symptoms appear, unlike COVID. Probably some other secondary reasons, too, like us being very used to the flu, it being less lethal than COVID, and the probability of spread being lower.

My turn for a question, if I may: Do you think masks reduce spread? If so, when would you suggest they’re warranted in terms of lethality? For example, I can understand people against requiring masks for something that was 0.0000001% lethal, and I hope you would agree that asking people to wear them would be warranted for something, say, 90% lethal. We all draw that line differently – I’m just curious where yours is. No argument, just curiosity.

ninja

LC: Really appreciate your feedback…Thank You for taking my questions seriously, because I was serious when asking…and not sarcastic. On your question to me: If you think about it, when going into surgery, Doctors and Nurses wash well, put on gloves and wear masks. However, most of the time, the patient undergoing surgery do not wear masks nor are they gloved. Why? What am I missing? As far as wearing masks, I believe that should be a personal decision…not mandated. The same with being vaccinated. I believe in Freedom of Choice when it comes to wearing a mask and taking the vaccine since common sense dictated that we are all different physically, mentally and emotionally. We are not cut from the same cloth. One size does not fit all. I respect those who choose to wear masks, even when they are inside their cars. I also respect their decision to wear the mask even though they are fully vaccinated. I don’t ask them why they do it, but it does go thru my mind…Why? And is that not sending a message that the COVID Vaccine does not work? I stll don’t understand, because to me it seems illogical. It just does not make sense to me. I compare it to a pregnant woman wanting her male partner to wear a condom when having intercourse so that she has peace of mind that she will not get pregnant. Or a man wearing a condom after he has had a vasectomy so that his female partner does not get pregnant. Or a female who has had a hystorectomy insisting her male partner wear a condom while she takes birth control pills so that she will not get pregnant. Hope you see where I am going with this. Thank You for your feedback, LC. Just as you, I AM open minded and I do learn from others that have different viewpoints. But just as you, we all have different perspectives on subjects…and that is OK. Life would be boring if we all were cut from the same cookie cutter and thought alike. Heck,… Read more »

David

Ninja – condoms are better as a protection against spreading/catching disease as well as a (poor) form of preventing pregnancy. Would you willingly screw someone with AIDS without one, pregnant or not?

Commissar

Then I owe you an apology….

I thought you were being trollish and sarcastic with your questions.

rgr769

Here’s my answer. If those masks made out of the same material as my BVD’s can’t stop a fart, what makes anyone think they can stop a virus? But seriously, the overwhelming majority of people are wearing the paper surgical masks. The gaps in the fiber filter material are about 2.5 times larger than the viral particles. That and the fact that the gaps around the perimeter of those masks make it highly unlikely one will protect one from a sick person sneezing or coughing in one’s vicinity. So, my opinion is that those masks are PR theater. Moreover, the politicians wearing them whip them off as soon as they see a camera is not on them.

ninja

rgr769:

Am smiling since another member of the ninja family who is also a RANGER made the EXACT same comment you made. EXACT!

Again, am trying to grasp common sense in all of this,i.e. if one is vaccinated, why wear a mask? If it IS because of the new variant of COVID (which is the 20th varient of COVID?), then that means the current vaccines don’t work…correct?

And if they don’t work, they why get it?

Why do I feel as if our Country is starting to imitate Nazism, i.e. the Hitler Days before and during WWII before the downfall?

Thank You for the feedback…Really appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

David

Rgr – the mayor of SanFran is catching grief even now for partying maskless recently despite her own mask mandate.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone just saw a commercial for Terry McAuliffe stating that you should vote for him in the upcoming Virginia election because his opponent is against mandatory mask wearing. And yet, the good candidate violated Federal regulations recently regarding the wearing of masks on public transportation.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/terry-mcauliffe-maskless-amtrak-virginiia-governor?_amp=true

Commissar

Because the typical annual flu is not as contagious or deadly.

If we were to have a flu virus that was particularly virulent or deadly we would treat it like a pandemic…because it would be one. And we would take precautions, including potential mask mandates and vaccine mandates.

Arguably; Covid-19 is a “cold” virus that is particularly virulent and deadly. Which is why the global need to reduce the spread.

I don’t know why this stuff needs to be explained to you. The fact that you asked these questions does not indicate you are being incisive; it just indicates you are clueless about the whole concept of a pandemic.

Also, moving forward; it will likely be increasingly seen as common courtesy to wear a mask when you have a flu or cold. It is already in many countries.

But I suspect you will be a self centered asshat with no civic conscientiousness and continue to be a disease vector for others.

Well, I am sorry…

They do this after collecting the eggs and sperm from the salmon returning from the ocean to spawn. They last did it the give-a-way September 2019 where I took home 4 3 footers. I could have gotten more but waiting in the line 4 times was enough, but I digress.

A story that DID catch my eye was about the first female soldier from the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) graduating from Ranger School.

“Reminiscing on the time period following her acceptance into the course, the Captain reaffirmed that being at Ranger school is a continual privilege and not something to take lightly. ‘No matter how bad it hurt each day or how tired you were, it was always a privilege to be there,’ she said’.”

“The Biden administration plans the widescale expulsion of Haitian migrants from a small Texas border city by putting them on flights to Haiti starting Sunday, an official said Friday, representing a swift and dramatic response to thousands who suddenly crossed the border from Mexico and gathered under and around a bridge.

Details are yet to be finalized but will likely involve five to eight flights a day, according to the official with direct knowledge of the plans who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. San Antonio, the nearest major city, may be among the departure cities.”

Don’t believe that last sentence. That border city, Del Rio, TX is home of Laughlin AFB, a pilot training center. 737’s have been flying out of there doing relocations quite a bit this past year. Whether you re pilot, air crew, passenger or just plain like the big bitch that is the C-130 Acft, this is one hell of story, written with the flair of “one who’s been there”. Enjoy: Approach into Baghdad, C-130 Style This guy must have taken a creative writing class in college. Gotta love his metaphors. 3rd MAW C-130 Pilot’s Description of Approach into Baghdad: There I was at six thousand feet over central Iraq, two hundred eighty knots and we’re dropping faster than Paris Hilton’s panties. It’s a typical September evening in the Persian Gulf; hotter than a rectal thermometer and I’m sweating like a priest at a Cub Scout meeting. But that’s neither here nor there. The night is moonless over Baghdad tonight, and blacker than a Steven King novel. But it’s 2006, folks, and I’m sporting the latest in night-combat technology – namely, hand-me-down night vision goggles (NVGs) thrown out by the fighter boys. Additionally, my 1962 Lockheed C-130E Hercules is equipped with an obsolete, yet, semi-effective missile warning system (MWS). The MWS conveniently makes a nice soothing tone in your headset just before the missile explodes into your airplane. Who says you can’t polish a turd? At any rate, the NVGs are illuminating Baghdad International Airport like the Las Vegas Strip during a Mike Tyson fight. These NVGs are the cat’s ass. But I’ve digressed. The preferred method of approach tonight is the random shallow. This tactical maneuver allows the pilot to ingress the landing zone in an unpredictable manner, thus exploiting the supposedly secured perimeter of the airfield in an attempt to avoid enemy surface-to-air-missiles and small arms fire. Personally, I wouldn’t bet my pink ass on that theory but the approach is fun as hell and that’s the real reason we fly it. We get a visual on the runway at three miles out, drop down to one thousand feet above the ground, still maintaining two hundred eighty knots. Now the fun starts. It’s pilot appreciation time as I descend the mighty Herc to six hundred feet and smoothly, yet very deliberately, yank into a… Read more »
