The case of the missing “Navy hat”

Trish Burnell and her “hat”
This was reported to us a few days ago and has since hit the national news wire. It was brought to our attention because there are some comments from her that have raised eyebrows among our readers. We’re awaiting a FOIA request for this person’s official military records, so this is all preliminary investigation.
Trish Burnell, pictured above, spoke to Fox News (after local media initially reported the story);
Veteran searches for Navy ship hat from Desert Storm that was lost in New Hampshire river
This isn’t just any normal hat.
A navy veteran is hoping to be reunited with her Navy ship hat, which she earned while serving in Desert Storm. The beloved clothing item was lost during a recent tubing trip when its owner nearly drowned after briefly getting stuck underwater.
Trish Burnell spoke with Fox News, explaining that she wore the hat “almost every single day.” She explained that aside from letting people know that she served on the USS Hunley, it also was a symbol of her pride for her service.
“It also allows other veterans to recognize each other and give a hardy nod or talk about the ‘good old days,’” she explained.
Burnell was wearing the hat during a recent tubing trip on the Saco River in New Hampshire. While she had grown up in the area, this was her first time tubing down the river (she wasn’t permitted to swim in it as a child because of the “curse of the Saco”).
During the trip, Burnell briefly went underwater and got her left leg caught. While she was eventually able to free herself, she explained, “Your life truly does pass before you when you think you’re about to die.”
Unfortunately, when she surfaced, she realized that her Navy ship hat had been lost.
“Pure sadness set in when I realized my hat was no longer on my head,” Burnell said.
She shared her story on Facebook, expecting only a few sarcastic comments from her friends. Instead, she was met with an outpouring of support. Burnell says she’s heard from people all over the country who wish her luck. She’s even been contacted by other former crewmembers of the USS Hunley.
“I shouldn’t really be surprised by that because that’s what military people do, we’re like a giant family,” she said.
A group of her friends are planning on returning to the river to search for the hat. While Burnell says she’s incredibly moved by the effort everyone is putting in, she’s still sad that her hat is still missing. As she explained, that was the hat she wore while serving on the ship and then when she traveled the country after being discharged.
“I felt like my best friend that I had most of my life had just disappeared and abandoned me without so much as a goodbye,” she explained.
I’ve never known someone to be so attached to a piece of headgear.
Now this initially raised eyebrows because Burnell continually refers to her ballcap as a “hat”, odd terminology when referring to a piece of military headwear, with the more common “cap”, “cover”, or “ballcap” being the usual parlance. The same eyebrows were once again raised for the claim of Desert Storm service aboard USS Hunley (AS-31).
Investigation so far
While we await the FOIA results, we have done some preliminary investigating and have our suspicions because of it.
USS Hunley shows no service during Desert Shield or Desert Storm in any of the open source databases. This one is quite exhaustive and shows no service in the Gulf. It looks like Hunley was part of the Atlantic Fleet during most of the 1980’s and until her decommissioning in 1994.
A check of the DoD Manpower database, which we’ll remind you is not exhaustive or definitive, tells a curious account of Burnell’s US Navy service;
If confirmed by the FOIA results, two months is barely enough time to attend and graduate boot camp let alone be assigned to a ship and deploy to the Persian Gulf. Her dates of service here would be outside the dates for Operation Desert Storm (17 Jan 1991 to 11 April 1991). She would have been in during the award criteria time frame for the Southwest Asia Service Medal. If that’s the case and she was awarded the SWASM, she has a claim to say she’s a Gulf War vet, but technically not a DS/DS vet.
She has a Myspace page with several photos on it. Interestingly, her most beloved hat, which has “become part of [her] identity” is nowhere to be found on Myspace.
I also posit that perhaps instead of losing the ballcap, the thing leapt from her head. I can only imagine how ripe a ballcap continuously worn for 30 years is.
This whole thing strikes us as quite silly. Those types of ballcaps can be found around any military base for less than $20. Certainly not something worth embellishing or lying about, if that is indeed the case here (we’re still investigating).
Category: Navy, Veterans in the news
Looks too damn bright in color to be a 30 year old cap that get worn all the time. Just putting that out there!
I’ve got unit caps, that I wore for a year or two that ended up grungy as fuck. They ended up getting a bath by CINC Household in the kitchen sink, with dish soap. Then retired……
yup, I must have 20 different unit or reup type ballcaps I acquired over the years…never wore them unless there was some unit or NCO function that called for it.
But I have met folks who wear their ship’s ballcaps religiously. They are generally available from several online stores…
Ret_25X,
Or locally.
Good news and bad news.
GOOD NEWS – I picked up a new Desert Storm Veteran ballcap (2 ribbons)
at the local Friday’s only large flea market. $12.
BAD NEWS – This large flea market
is in the middle of farm / Amish country,
the veteran count in this area is way LOW,
and the hat seller is LOADED with veteran caps from all wars,
plus he ALSO sells BRONZE STAR and PURPLE HEART COMBAT WOUNDED caps.
It’s f’n PHONY HEAVEN, I tell ya.
Would that area be Southern Maryland down by Pax River?
Hack Stone,
No, it’s the Green Dragon in Ephrata, PA,
near US322, along the original (2x bypassed) US222.
Signs on PA272 (also former US222).
https://www.greendragonmarket.com/gallery
Haven’t been there since the fire. How is it. We usually go to Roots
akpual,
My 1st visit in 10 years.
Many of the signs for stands and eateries look to be 60 years old.
I went for the pulled pork sammy and frenched fries.
And the cap.
And some new bedsheets from bedsheet lady.
Could be Ohio Amish like Harrison Ford.
akpual,
Harrison Ford got an eyeful of nude fake Amish
(that LGBT star of Top Gun
(not that there’s anything wrong with that))
a few miles down the road in Lancaster County, PA.
Too bad she didn’t stay in shape for Top Gun II.
Anonymous,
She’s a mess in real life.
Settled in my county in PA to raise children,
but after ongoing domestic police calls (woman on woman) and the fallout on her children in the schools,
after her children graduated HS, she vanished to the hills of North Carolina, where the domestic crap continues.
Not something anyone wants on a movie set,
or in the (cough cough) trailers.
She got hers online… along with her Battle of Hoth Commemorative Medal and honor vest.
Oh Hells to the naw! How about one of you squidly swabbie run a Signal Flag up the yardarm for me…The BULLSHIT FLAG!!! Sixty (60) Days AD? That barely cracks the Gunga Din line, right? I will await the FOIA before I go further.
Just like the CSS Hunley, this heifer’s credibility was sunk. Unlike the CSS Hunley, I doubt that her credibility can be raised. Skanapotomus shoulda wore the hat over her face instead of her head. Google Foo her name and this link to TAH/VG is very near the top, already. Heh heh 😀
I guess if she washes it in that Woolite for dark clothes every so often to maintain the color, and doesn’t wear it when it gets warm and you sweat she might have had it for 30 years.
My team hat from NTC had to be replaced after a year it was so sweated through. The ones I had in college all look like they needed a few bathes (even after they got one) and those were white. Darker colored hats seemed to fade quickly. I neve was big in to hats…maybe why I still have hair! I would just ask the USS Hunley association where to buy a new one!? Or have a new one made at the local mall.
Figure where I was 30 years ago and the condition that ballcap was in at the time?
Yeah. No.
Yawn, Attention Whore Much (my opinion).
In other news, she was on the “river” in a tube (top or tire was not defined). Most likely in a bathing suit; enjoy the mental visual. BTW: I am selling brain bleach on amazon. Let me know if you need the link.
can’t help her with a USS Hunley cap, but the proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the federal government formerly located in Bethesda Maryland has a surplus of outdated Red Hat Software that just may fit the bill. Buy two Red Hat licenses, and we will throw in absolutely free, Y3K software. You just pay shipping and handling. Use Promo Code Spandex for 13% savings on all purchases.
That may go well with my Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal Operating System (boxed set).
I’ll give her this, claiming to be on a tender is as close to claiming to be a cook that I’ve ever seen.
So, her poser/embellisher efforts aren’t up to par with the dutch rudder club.
penguinman000,
Fred Emmart (II) puts her to shame.
An actual career cook, on a ship with engagements,
who just had to be Phony Navy SEAL / SeaBee triple Rambo.
It’s almost karma, that Emmart’s (new) wife is now in West Virginny prison.
But not Emmart.

Don’t forget Sticky bun poser champion Wave Rayner with his 30 years Marine Corp Silver Star service. While he was actually a Canadian Navy Sub cook.
VIDEO —> It’s on local TV station news video.
She doesn’t say it, the TV station says it,
the 1st line of the piece.
“… proudly served her nation during Operation Desert Storm.”
So how does the TV station come up with that by itself?
(sarc – We’ve seen that rabbit hole countless times.)
At the end….
“I get a little emotional when it comes to my military service.”
IMHO, she’s about to get a lot more than a little emotional.
Yup. Hope she’s got her story straight.
Hatchet.
As straight as the path her Hunley cap took,
from her head, into creek/river waters,
and getting lodged under a river rock.
Maybe she is as attached to that cap as a certain swiftboat captain was attached to that “magic” hat he was souveniered by a CIA agent he infiltrated into the Cam of Bodia.
I have couple/three USN ‘covers’ that were gifted to me, years ago – one came from a Desert Storm 1 participant and two were given to me by another friend who did two tours in Afghanistan. All three hats are well-worn, still wearable but do show a bit of sun-bleaching but Burnell’s hat doesn’t look sun-bleached or beat-up enough to be thirty years old. Based on the published Service Record and gut-feeling about her story, it sounds more likely that she lost a conversation-prop than an actual ‘tour hat’. HELL! I REALLY like/love the three hats I’ve been given but I sure as fuck wouldn’t fib to outright lie to get ‘em back however dearly missed and accidental my loss. No worries, Tricia – THE INTERNET NEVER FORGETS AND NEITHER DOES TAH.
If she’s so attached to that “Hat” then WTF was she doing wearing it while TUBING down a river? That shit doesn’t click with me either…
The Saco river never gives up it’s hats.
“The Legend lives on from the (Phony Sailors) on down… of the (River) they call
(Saco-Goomey) The (River) it is said never gives up her (hats) When the skies of November turn gloom-eeeee…”
/No disrespect to Gordon Lightfoot intended
But.. I will have to see this Hat.
I found her Facebook site (hope the link works)
https://m.facebook.com/trish.burnell.5
* On her Facebook, she frequently self identifies as a Navy Veteran and a Navy Sailor.
*She also said she named her SERVICE DOG after the Ship (Oh, No….)
* What is VERY Bizarre is that she answered every question about the trip and the hat on Facebook EXCEPT when someone asked her WHEN she served. That question was asked a week ago…and she has YET to answer…
I Wonder Why? Asking For A Friend.
Gotta give her 10 points for having that Service Dog…
😎😉🤔
ninja,
Great job on this. Rabbit in the hole!
SHE NEVER ANSWERS.
It’s all about the Battle of Saco Creek (hardly a river).
I’ve been through that part of New Hampshire.
It’s Lake Winnipesaukee area
(you know, where The Three Stooges claimed to be born).
If she comes up phony, this shit will travel.
BTW, since when does 2 months of stateside Navy ship service
rate a Service Dog?
Or, is that dog (like many other dogs with PHONY VESTS) just a PET?
IMHO, Phony vested service dogs
are just as awful as phony vested service humans.
Elko, Nevada has the phony vested service human dogs.
http://www.elkonvpowmia.org/
In view of the fact the Navy says she only served 63 days on active duty, I doubt she spent any time on AD as any ship’s crew complement. IIRC Navy boot camp was still six weeks back in the 1990’s.
ninja,
Yes, the link works, for CELLPHONES.
M = cellphone app compatible.
WWW = World Wide Web = PC internet browser compatible.
It’s now an old habit to backspace the M and type WWW.
Because way too many are now on the internet (and FakeBook) on their cellphones,
instead of using their home computers,
for which the internet (AND FakeBook) were originally designed.
https://www.facebook.com/trish.burnell.5
… which makes this 1980s/1990s computer nerd
a 2020s cellphone dinosaur.
Ugh, cellphones.
There, I said it.
lol
MarineDad61:
THANK YOU for the info on Facebook via Smartphone/Cell Phone/Mobile Phone.
Our internet is currently down (99% of the time, I use my PC to research and post on TAH), so am currently using a Mobile Phone to research as well as type (am STILL trying to learn how to use a Mobile).
Did you read on Burnell’s FACEBOOK that she commented to someone that HER BROTHER served on the USS ENTERPRISE?
Only thing about her comment is that SHE NEVER HAD A BROTHER..only SISTERS.
What a Pinnochio!!
And for her to use the USS ENTERPRISE? I’m laughing up a storm.
This is NOT going to turn out well for her.
Wonder what her Mother and Sisters think of her story?
ninja,
I’m stocked up on popcorn & kleenex.
I already used up some paper towels,
cleaning up the hot tea I spit up on my keyboard.
She could use the USS Reliant– that’d be fun. (KHANNN!!!)
63 days active duty, eh? Somehow I rather doubt she went anywhere other than IET while on active duty.
Hondo, Mason, and Ninja,
Comparing the article’s FOIA & hullnumber AS-31 link…
[Hulney (sp) shifted homeport to Norflok (sp) in July 1992.]
It appears Trish Burnell showed up just in time after the
Hunley docked in at Norfolk.
More, her service dog qualifying injury
was not only totally unlikely to be caused by battle action,
but more likely caused by falling down the steps on the way to
either the mess deck, or the poop deck (shitters).
Page 2
(Page 1 on “Trish Burnell, Phony Desert Storm Veteran”)
is going to be great.
Flounder from Animal House agrees with me.
Commenters on Fox news are cheering for her and thanking her for her service. I think she just might need a little love from the truth. You may fire when ready, Gridley!
Fox News (The Five) also put out the story about Ole Maggie DeSanti…Remember her?
https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=92064&cpage=1#comments
Several of us ninjas notified Fox News about their error, but they never corrected it.
ninja,
They ALL did.
Here’s ABC’s Good Morning America.
(Also ever retracted.)
Also NEVER retracted. (correction)
GOOD NEWS…
Only 2 (TWO) videos of Maggie DeSanti
remain on the Boob of You.
See them here.
Or, I’ll cheat for you.
Here is the other.
Unlike Trish, Maggie is old hat at this…
26L,
OMG, LMFAO.
old + hat = old hat = Maggie DeSanti.
You guys have got to stop
making me spit up my hot tea
all over my high quality illuminated PC keyboard.

Meanwhile, situation’s going down the drain faster than South Vietnam in ’75 in A’stan:

‘Fraid so.
Well, this is interesting.

Wonder if he spent any time on the USS HUNLEY.
You know what else is interesting?
She told someone on Facebook that HER BROTHER served on the USS ENTERPRISE.
Read her Dad’s Obituary. Her Dad DID NOT HAVE A SON….which means she DOES NOT HAVE A BROTHER..
Her DAD HAD A BROTHER:
“He is survived by his wife, Pat of Denmark; a daughter, Tricia “Trish” Burnell of South Paris; other daughters, Jodi Rixford of South Paris and Michelle Nowlin of Arizonia; a brother, Keith Osgood and his wife, Sharon of Gray. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Dale Osgood and a sister, Virginia “Ginny” Burnell.”
See where I am going with this?
😉😎🤔
ninja,
BONUS – Her Book of the Fake is WIDE OPEN for clicks & comments,
not only to her,
but also to her fans who already left (public) comments.
NOT YET, everyone. NOT YET.
See where I am going with this?

In this day and age perhaps a sister is self-identifying as a “brother”.
Ah, that nasty cover needed an oil change anyway.
My hats off to her if she can pull this off…
Plus, our (or maybe just Lars’) favorite COL Vindmann claims Trump’s non-impeachment lost 600,000 lives to COVID:
https://twitter.com/phillyrich1/status/1423033714678894594
Are any of Governor Cuomo’s victims among those 600,000 deaths?
Indubitably, those 15K nursing home deaths are included within those fake 600K numbers which include drug OD’s, motorcycle crashes, and suicides.
I see her nickname is “Poopsey”, so maybe all this is just a Poopsey Oopsey./s
Her 63 days on AD puts her right in there with the Giduck line (58 days).
Her nickname “Poopsey” might be a clue to her discharge from the Navy. We had a shy guy that tended to shit overnight in the showers during basic at Ft Polk. It was narrowed down to one individual being on fire guard those nights. He got caught, got the boot, and we lived happily ever after.
As well as no more shitty showers!!!
Her 63 days of service started AFTER hostilities ended by a year. Plus, the Hunley was equipped to handle SSBN’s which would all but eliminate it from deploying to a combat zone such as DS/DS. She’s been living this lie for so long she’s starting to believe it herself. My ballcaps lasted about 6 months before they needed to be “retired” from daily use. I expect my son to resupply the old man when he gets to the fleet.
I was on Proteus and Holland, and although they both were able to refit boomers (and did), by the early 90s most of the “41 For Freedom” boomers were going away and the TRFs in King’s Bay and Bangor were refitting Tridents.
We still did lots of fast attack upkeeps, tho.
I have a friend who piloted FedEx aero-planes in the late 90s-early 00s.
Short version: plane fucked up, my friend ditched it in the ocean (don’t ask me which ocean, it’s still classified), and eventually washed up on an island.
The solitude caused his mental state to deteriorate to the point where his best friend was a ball (don’t ask me what kind of ball, it’s still classified).
Anyway, before he can use his water conveyance to float his ass back to the States, he loses the ball, which had become his friend and confidant, in said unnamed ocean.
He screamed out, “REDACTED!!! REDACTED!!!”, to no avail.
In summary, I sympathize with this Squid because my friend went through it as well.
JustALurkinAround,
I am told of an uncle’s friend that I never met,
who was a skipper’s 1st mate
on a small Pacific Ocean touring cabin boat.
One day it set sail, with an assortment of the wealthy, the famous, and a couple of small town America tourists,
on a 3 hour tour.
A 3 hour tour.
The weather started getting rough.
The tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew….
A Navy hat would be lost
A Navy hat would be lost
The hat was a-found on the shore of this
Uncharted desert isle…
A Proud Infidel@, Eggs, and JustALurkinAround,
The original ending changed from
“and the rest”
to “the Professor and Trish Burnell”.
Here’s the “and the rest” black and white original.
Lurkin, Did your friend create fire, too? I bet his name was Prom E. Theus, right?
Gosh, two WHOLE months of boot camp and she has to go home. Must have been tough stuff…
I wouldn’t know. Mine was only 2.5 months. I was in a daze all the time.
I don’t understand how the navy works
Was she basically still in basic ????
Is it even possible to be on a boat
If one only does 60 days
Great Lakes… it was hell, maaan! (Cue CCR’s “Fortunate Son” for atmosphere here… )
It was 10 weeks in the 1960s, and now it is 8 weeks, and only at Great Mistakes. 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, no time off for anything, so she washed out, period.
Her still having a Myspace account ruined any credibility she may have had in my eyes, her actual service notwithstanding.
Ol’ Poe’s just a bit surprised the term, “Ass-Hat”, hasn’t come up yet in reference to this apparently specious sailor…
She’ll just be a Mad Hatter, after she outed for her Ass Hattery story and lies.
Maybe some of her followers will start a go fund me and pass the hat..
Enjoy your google fame
You definitely earned it
The polls are open for voting:
Tick Mark in the Navy column for FY21 Valor Vultures?:
Yea or Nay?
(Navy is currently 4 1/2 tick marks behind Army)
I think we need to hold off until we get the official results.
Ya know. I saw this story last week….and it seemed so innocent and lacked tales of daring do, I REALLY hoped it was on the up and up.
Shame. On. Me.
Burnell has identified herself not only as a Navy Veteran, but also a Lesbian.
To each his/her own.
Perhaps that is why Burnell did not serve very long in the Navy, i.e. the Navy found out she was Gay (it was before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”)??
Additionally, she was selling items on Facebook that she said was part of her FATHER-IN-LAW Estate…so far, have yet to find any records of marriage…and she is part of a Facebook Lesbian DATING site…Perhaps another lie?
She also had an Uncle who spent 24 years in the Navy and retired around 1995 as a CPO.
https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/mainetoday-pressherald/name/dale-osgood-obituary?pid=16744290
Perhaps her Uncle was a DS Veteran and served on the USS HUNLEY or the USS ENTERPRISE…or even her Dad?
We have seen other folks caught wearing military items that they were not entitled to…and their excuse was that they were “honoring a relative”…
Beginning to believe Burnell has a Personality Disorder, the Joe Bidon Syndrome i.e.a Compulsive/Pathological Liar.
Has she tried checking the bags of ice at the local Kwik-E-Mart?
[…] We talked about Trish Burnell last week when she made national news after losing her USS Hunley ballcap on a river tubing excursion. To quickly recap her service claims, she claimed to be a US Navy veteran and to have served aboard submarine tender USS Hunley (AS-31). News articles have claimed she is a Desert Storm veteran, but there are no direct quotes from her on that. […]
Well good ol Trish is messaging my wife and neighbors that I posted some of her information on the book of faces. Specifically under a certain she/she dating page. Oops.
