Accused “Bonnie Dick” Arsonist Named
USS Bonhomme Richard Ablaze
A disgruntled sailor is accused of starting the fire that ultimately resulted in the decommissioning of the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6).
Ryan Sawyer Mays faces a laundry list of charges, specifics depending if he is tried in Federal Court or faces a Navy Courts Martial.
Mays had washed out of BUD/S and was reassigned to the ship as a non-designated Seaman. This was apparently unsatisfactory to Mays;
undesignated personnel are usually assigned to the First Lieutenant Division and perform mundane tasks involving ship’s maintenance and line handling.

Sailor Who ‘Hated’ Navy Torched $1.2B Assault Ship: Warrant
Ryan Sawyer Mays is accused of costing the Navy billions of dollars in damage after dropping out of Navy SEAL training and enduring an embarrassing breakup.
Reporter: Justin Rohrlich
News Editor: Allison Quinn
A 20-year-old sailor with a grudge against the U.S. Navy and a failed attempt at becoming a Navy SEAL under his belt is accused of setting an amphibious assault ship ablaze and singlehandedly costing the Navy $30 million in damage.
According to an NCIS search warrant affidavit obtained by The Daily Beast, Ryan Sawyer Mays aroused the suspicions of investigators almost immediately after the 40,000-ton USS Bonhomme Richard went up in flames on July 12, 2020, burning for nearly five days and leaving dozens injured while extinguishing the ferocious blaze.
Mays, whose identity has not previously been revealed, now faces charges of arson within a special maritime and territorial jurisdiction, use of fire to damage federal property, and making a false statement, the warrant states. If the Navy instead proceeds with a court martial, Mays will be charged with aggravated arson and willful hazarding of a vessel, said a Navy spokesman. Mays does not have a lawyer listed in court records, and could not be reached for comment.
The fire raged through the 14-deck ship after beginning in a cargo hold, with the temperature onboard exceeding 1,000 degrees at times, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday told reporters last summer. The fire aboard the Bonhomme Richard, which was waiting on a $250 million upgrade at the time, was finally tamed by some 400 sailors from 16 vessels, helicopters dumping water on the flames, the Naval Base San Diego Fire Department, and numerous civilian fire departments from surrounding cities.
Every deck above the waterline was damaged, and although no deaths or serious injuries were reported, 71 people were hurt or treated for smoke inhalation. At least 18 firefighters filed workers’ compensation claims following the blaze, specifying they suffered, among other things, concussions, orthopedic issues, and dehydration.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last November, the Navy said it would scrap the Bonhomme Richard in light of estimated repair costs of as much as $3.2 billion. The ship cost about $750 million when it was built in 1998, or about $1.2 billion by today’s standards. The investigation, according to the affidavit, is ongoing.
This individual obviously has authority issues and had no problem endangering his ship and crew.
Art. 110. Improper hazarding of vessel or aircraft
(a) WILLFUL AND WRONGFUL HAZARDING.—Any person subject to
this chapter who, willfully and wrongfully, hazards or suffers to be hazarded any vessel or aircraft of the armed forces shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may
direct.
Thanks, David.
Here is a VERY detailed document on the Search Warrant for Ryan Sawyer Mays:
Lots of interesting information.
Punk azz PUNK. No man around growing older? Maybe his Mama should whupped his PUNK azz PUNK self a few more times when he was growing older, we wouldn’t be down a 3 billion $ Warship. I’m sure that the lads in Cell Block C will give him plenty of manly attention.
Thanks ninja. We DO have the very best ninjas. BTW…gabn/rtr/hbtd! Won’t be long now.
KoB:
Please keep your fingers cross that our beloved hbtd and rtr do not go woke on us…the ninja family is so disappointed in what happened with Austin and Miley (we were taken back since those two are not the same Soldiers the ninja family worked with 20 years ago).
We also are very disappointed in the direction West Point is heading, i.e. going woke as well.
If it was up to Snake In The Grass, Dr. Fakechi, he probably would try to cancel all college football and convince the White House to go along with that thought process.
gabn/rtr/hbtd🐎🐐🐘🐕
BTW, the sequal to our own AW1Ed and Mick’s favorite movie is supposed to be release in November…that is, if movie theaters will still be open…and if open, if folks are willing to show their “papers” and wear a mask to watch that 🎶🎵Danger Zone🎶🎵 movie on the Big Screen….
😎😉
Not too concerned with Nick (or ‘Bama) going woke, Nick isn’t going to put up with that. Kirby may hang tuff, but higher may overrule. You’ve noticed that UGA players get away with a lot more now than they used to.
‘Ed made mention that he thinks Mick already has blocked off an entire section of tickets for the Premier of the motion picture so we can go as a group. Used his flight pay to cover it. You know that they both have still got that lovin’ feelin’ for a good action packed, technically correct picture show.
Nick is a strange fella in 2021. It seems all he cares about is winning football games and making bank; not about people’s butthurt feelings. He will be one of the first up against the wall when the time comes. His PSA for covid vaccines won’t save him.
A very interesting read.
What was so sad to see was Ryan Sawyer May’s Facebook account when he was very young. Looks as if one picture he posted on his account was of him and his Mom:
Here is his updated Facebook account:
ninja,
The only comment on his only (visible) post
IS his mom.
MarineDad61:
I found his Mom’s, StepDad’s and Grandmother’s Facebook accounts…it was so sad to read their posts about how proud they were of Sawyer and all of his accomplishments.
Their accounts also has pictures of Sawyer in various Navy uniform.
In respect of his family, I am not revealing their names.
I know this must be a heartbreaking time for them, especially for Sawyer’s Mom. This story is all over the news media, domestic and international.
Gonna be interesting how this turns out…Sawyer still maintains his innocence…and most likely his family believes he is innocent as well.
So Sad.
about Sawyer:
“I love the outdoors! I could be out there for years and never go inside.”
That might be a problem in the future….
So he opened all the fire doors and disabled the fire suppression system as well? I already know the answer, this isan expression of sarcasm.
My nephew (brand new butter bar in the USN aspiring to be an NFO) sent me this this morning.
I find it amazing that one disgruntled asshole can destroy one of the largest ships in the Navy and degrade our amphibious capabilities significantly. Amazing.
I was on her while with the 31st MEU.
In better days:
Read the search warrant ninja provided. He did far more than simply start a fire.
Some pics that your Nephew sent you. The Amphib Navy really came a long way since I was in. The LPH class Helicopter ships could only carry Helicopters which was the Sikorsky 34 and the UH 1 Hueys plus what was called a King Bee Helo which I can’t find info on. Got to dig out the Ships newsletter from Op. Power Pack in 1965 where there is a pic of it. Before I went aboard the LPH 3. they tried landing a small spotter plane on the deck with no arresting gear which didn’t go over well. When I was on the greyhound bus crossing over the bridge tunnel, I saw British Jump jets over the water.
I see I wasn’t clear. My nephew sent me the story, not the pictures. His boot ass has just done OCS and is Non-Flyin’ Officer (AKA NFO) school in Pensacola.
The pictures are mine and if you go to the albums you can see a lot of where I’ve been and some of my hobbies (like scale modeling).
34s, huh? There is one in the USMC Museum in Quantico that the flew in, landed in the parking lot, stowed the blades and set it up inside.
An article from the museum:
It replaced an H-19:
A no tail hook spotting plane? Not the craziest thing they’ve landed on a carrier:
NFO- Naval Flight Officer. The P-3 had two per crew, plus three enlisted sensor operators. Add the pilot-in-command to fill out the tactical crew.
NFO- Naval Flight Officer
I know, Non-Fyin’ Officer always just struck me as funny.
Missing an ‘l’ in that last post somewhere. Found it sitting on my keyboard, I did.
A.K.A., “self-loading baggage.”
the Marine Corps king Bee Helicopter I mentioned above is the Sikorsky CH 37.
That is a design only a mother could love. Apparently, they were using fighter engines since they hadn’t worked out turbine engines (Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp) yet so it had those two bulbous engine housings. Not the most attractive design to be sure!
It lookslike his Navy career is sunk if he is found guilty. Lots of mays of what will happen BUT I can see The Woke Military now saying that it was a Peaceful act of arson and maybe a week in the brig and 2 weeks in the woods singing Sara Sponda Sara Sponda around a campfire with Red Lips Smiley Miley and other members of his ilk.
It’s okay when BLM does it, you know. He should claim to an Anti-Racist.
Jeff – the kids life will be sunk, regardless of the verdict.
Feel sorry for his family and loved ones and the Hell they must be going though in trying to come to grips with this.
But to make it fair to the other traitors he has to have his pee-pee chopped off.
Thank heavens all our sailors here at TAH appear to be “gruntled”…😜
Down, doggie. Sit. Stay.
*grin*
Woof-woof…ol’ Poe is a doggie indeed as his regiment in Vietnam, the 327th Airborne Infantry are known as the Bastogne Bulldogs.
And seeing how Miz Poe is a serial, binge-watcher of NCIS, ol’ Poe is all too familiar with disgruntled squids. Speaking of serial, I liked Mark Marmon better in his portrayal of serial killer Ted Bundy.
Bundy, by the way, was captured in Pensacola in the wee hours of the morning by an NFO. Actually it was a local LEO, but there usually were a lot of bonnie-dicked, young NFO’s out and about in the wee hours, hounding the P’Cola ladies.
See how ol’ Poe tied all that together?
🤪🤪🤪
Poetrooper,
Prediction – Mays, a future Phony Navy SEAL,
later in life,
after he cleans and clears the brig for the last time,
and legally changes his name to (Navy) Capt. Harland Sanders.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonel_Sanders
Hey, Poe… I’m housebroken, have my shots, but haven’t been fixed. Even have a pedigree…
I’m thinking this has to be some kind of record for most expensive fire by a single arson. Who can provide him with the most painful and severe punishment, the Navy or the Feds? Shitbird needs to be keelhauled from the Nimitz.
Sadly, no. USS Miami (SSN-755) a Los Angles class fast attack sub, has that dubious honor.
WATM- USS Miami Fire
AW1Ed,
17 years in federal prison for civlian Casey James Fury.
https://news.usni.org/2013/03/18/uss-miami-arsonist-gets-17-years-in-prison
But on the plus side, he did get out of work early.
SFC D, the Nimitz is too small now, compared to the newer carriers. He needs to be keelhauled on something big, like the Ford.
As I said before, the Navy doesn’t have the most brilliant track record for due process and exhaustive investigation. Who’s to say he wasn’t just picked to be a convenient scapegoat a la Clayton Hartwig? Not saying he’s definitely innocent, just that his accusers have a bit of a credibility issue.
If he is guilty, by all means hold the rum and apply sodomy and/or the lash as appropriate. I’m just hesitant to take their word for it, that’s all.
For a guy everyone knew hated the Navy he sure had a lot of unsupervised alone time all over that vessel…
We had a couple shit bags in the infantry and they couldn’t take a piss without someone checking for volume and clarity…
IMHO at the VEY LEAST he needs at least a good 20 years at the USDB making big rocks into small ones and by then he’ll have been forgotten enough to be thrown out on the streets with a DD.
What is so sad is that I found his Mom’s Facebook page, his StepDad’s Facebook page and his Grandmother’s Facebook page…In reviewing it, I don’t think they were aware of what their Son/Stepson/Grandson did.
It looks as if his Mom worships her son (her only child). She posted numerous pictures of Sawyer. Turns out he was on his High School Swimteam (and did extremely well). He also was an Eagle Scout.
She has pictures of him when he joined the Navy, his initial Boot Camp picture, his Boot Camp graduation picture (July 2019) and various other photos of him in uniform.
His Maternal Grandfather was in the Marine Corps. He just passed away in April 2021.
His StepDad (since 2008) is a Professor of Math and Physics at a Community college.
What is interesting is that CBS news reported “Navy officials say they do not believe Mays intended to destroy the ship, but the blaze he set was whipped by high winds into a towering inferno.”
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bonhomme-richard-fire-navy-charges-sailor-with-setting-fire-that-destroyed-ship/
This is not the first time Sawyer made the news. He was featured in a local paper when he was 8 years old:
https://www.dailyindependent.com/news/local_news/2010-the-good-the-bad-and-the-weird/article_8ce989e1-4b10-5c83-b643-e430f9603b3d.html
“Sawyer Mays, 8, said he wants to be a scientist when he grows up, but, if that doesn’t pan out, he could always fall back on his experience as a used-car salesman.”
“In February, the youngster earned himself a sizable commission by selling a minivan that one of his mother’s co-workers had been trying to get rid of.”
“His tactics included posted signs at his school and chatting up his teachers about the vehicle.”
His big break came, though, while he and his stepfather were out car-shopping and he told salesman at a local used-car lot about the van.”
“Sawyer’s reward? A crisp $100 bill, which he used to purchase the bow and arrow he needed to earn his Cub Scout archery merit badge.”
He signed up for a 6 year contract with the Navy.
Have this feeling he will be in the Navy longer than 6 years.
He fucketh himself.
As always, API ALWAYS has the greatest comebacks!
😆😅🤣😂😎😉
Another Hwite supream pizza?
….Some clarification, please – did Mays enlist, finish his ‘A’ School (I believe that’s what the USN calls it) and then went to BUDS?
He dropped his “A” school billet to attend BUD/S, so he lost that spot in the schoolhouse. When he DOR’ed from BUD/S he became a non-rate, or undesignated, but still owed the Navy the remainder of his enlistment.
This is not an unrecoverable occurrence. With hard work and a good attitude one can become a “Striker” for an actual rate.
I wonder if he’ll suddenly find himself to be “transgender” and try to weasel out of doing his full prison sentence a la Bradley Manning?
A Proud Infidel,
If he keeps the pecks and abs,
and stuffs a pair of NERF balls,
he can take on a classified nickname,
and become 1 of the female contingent
on the newly resurrected American Gladiators.
Read the Warrant. It’s concise and does speak volumes.
One sick, twisted fuck. One of the things that really gets to me – this guy was given EVERY shot at the Navy’s Brass Ring and rejected it. If he absolutely hated the USN that much, then WHY the HELL didn’t he just fill out all the necessary paperwork, do the exit-interview-thing, collect his luggage and PROFESSIONALLY exit the NAVY..? Compounding his insundry offences committed, May – voluntarily or otherwise – puts THAT many of his fellow sailors at-risk?! Even one is one too many.. That’s more than enough for me. Doom on him. To do such a thing reduces May to unredeemable human garbage. Hope they throw…everything at him and hope the only way this motherfucker ever get’s out of the Brig is feet-first and deader than Monty Python’s parrot.
They will crucify that loser, so that no one asks an admiral “how did one asshole wreck a docked carrier?”
How? It wasn’t one asshole. He had a bunch of help. The ship was deliberately made fatally vulnerable, by everyone in that fucked up chain. Deliberately, in that they chose to accept the easy way.
How many Chiefs saw the hazard and looked away? How many officers? Her Captain? admirals?
It’s not like the whole IJN Midway air armada was trying to sink her, or their Center Force off Samar. Just one fuckhead and a whole bunch of culpable slugs.
It used to take an enemy -fleet- to sink our carriers, and only after those magnificent ships and crews -wrecked- the enemy.
Indifference and negligence wrecked her.
Maybe putting the Coast Guard in charge would fix things. They seem to take such good care of their toys that they are comfortable daring “harms way” in Hurricanes.
I was an HT and ran the DC Shop on a fleet replenishment oiler, so we took firefighting and damage control seriously on a ship that carried 7 million gallons of cargo fuel. I find it impossible to believe that one man’s action could do that much damage. A non-rated deck ape isn’t going to know what to disable and/or sabotage for a fire to rage pier-side for four days. The Material State of Readiness must be called into question. I went through a major overhaul & select maintenance yard periods where we had to almost more vigilant than at sea because of the yard birds. They usually don’t give a shit because they don’t “live there”. See the USS Miami.
If they sink the BHR for an artificial reef maybe Mays can go with it.
As former Navy I can almost tell this young man didn’t quite grasp the difficulty level of becoming a SEAL. I saw it with my own two eyes through boot camp , A & C schools. Probably developed a terrible attitude about being a washout as well. However, innocent until proven guilty. Hated to see this , hope the Navy has the story correct. I do hate this for any young person serving. There just won’t be any winners in this, thankfully nobody was killed fighting the blaze.
I didn’t read all of the previous commentary but, as a retired old fart with 21 years in two tours between ’69 and ’92 and some experience with NIS (or now, NCIS) during that period tells me that there is maybe a 50/50 chance that the “conclusions” in this are real and correct. I’ll be watching for emerging evidence, if their case begins to sour, such as a couple of other “members of a homosexual love triangle” are suddenly “discovered” to bolster their case. My suspicion is that an admiral desired an outcome and NCIS (hey, they ain’t got an impartial Leroy Jethro Gibbs working for ’em) will deliver that outcome.
“Court Martial” is singular. “Courts Martial” is plural.
