The blogosphere crickets are deafening

| June 2, 2009

For the last twenty four hours, I’ve been monitoring Technorati for blog posts on the shooting in Little Rock yesterday. Unsurprisingly, I’ve found countless center-right blogs reporting and commenting on it, but the Left not so much. Most of them just toss up a news story and few comments. One blog I read last night cautioned his readers that the shooting yesterday and the other on Sunday were both terrible. I wonder why he thought he had to write five paragraphs explaining that?

So this morning, I began my foraging again and I was relieved to see that the Huffington Post had something up – alas, it was just another reposted news story. However the HuffPo commenters can always be trusted to satisfy my evil wingnut lust for hyperbole;

Yeah, the most important thing is that Obama not give political ammunition to his opponents – that’s more important than the lives of two young Americans.

But, ya know, a guy trained in Yemen who guns down American soldiers in the streets of our cities should be reported by the actual media, ya know? Fox News usually shuts down broadcasting any real news for hours of video of police tape fluttering in the wind – not this time. The Washington Post puts the story in a column on page 16, and then just the AP blurb. But even that is better than the Washington Times which avoids the story. The New York Times ran one article yesterday and nothing today. As far as I can tell the article they wrote yesterday didn’t make it to print this morning.

So why is the Left so scared of admitting that there is a real threat that has existed since 9-11 and that George Bush’s Administration kept us safe? I’m not saying Obama isn’t keeping us safe, I’m sure it’s his intention to do so. But isn’t it a bit disingenuous to ignore the problem and not give it the same measure of attention as the shooting of one single man who was killed because of his behavior? Do they truly think that the problem will go away if they bury their faces in their hands?

And what does it say about the Left that they have to explain to each other why the senseless death of one man is the same as the senseless death of another. What does that say about their whole ideology?

My 2c someone at some agency is shutting this down and calling in alot of markers to do so. 100+ days after the evil bush is gone and we have another attack on American soil couldn’t have that now could we. Politics.

For that matter it could just be the media so in the tank they cant say it. But then why is fox not walking down that path?

There is alot more to this story.
A American muslim convert goes to Yemen and meets with the people this guy met with gets his own personal surveillance team in alot of cases.

I have read people on other sites try to question people that say the media isn’t really covering this. They want us to prove the negative, that there are really stories out there, blah, blah, blah. Compare the reaction to Tiller and you will notice that the shooting of 2 soldiers is only given cursory coverage, whereas Tiller gets the in depth look at the all the anti abortion groups and if they are planning more attacks, etc. The Whitehouse was johnny on the spot for upping protection for abortion clinics, but I haven’t heard a peep out of them about protecting the recruiting centers or troops in general.

Code pinko can castigate Marines in San Franfreako and block their doors, etc., but you can’t protest within 200 ft. of an abortion clinic and then you will have police surveillence and probably US Marshal’s shadowing you.

Just made a quick drive by into the land of moonbats and the Tiller situation at DU is still top-dead-center. No mention of the Little Rock tragedy. In fact, the only thread I see that even half-assed meets the criteria for discussing the military is one talking about the uptick in soldiers’ deaths in Iraq. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102×3903928

What’s really bothering me is that Obama hasn’t said a word about it. He rightly put out a statement condemning the murder of the doctor, but not a single solitary word about the soldiers…

Why would the White House put out a statement when http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31071200

As someone who’d probably be labeled a member of “the Left” (although I’m not wild about that as it papers over quite a bit), and as a blogger myself, I’d pose a few alternative explanations as to why “the Left” hasn’t jumped on the blogwagon about this–but these just guesses; I don’t have a solid answer. But here’s an attempt: 1) Chicken or egg? You’re right, there’s been a dearth of news coverage on this. I didn’t know about it until I read about it here. (I am considering putting something up this evening about it, but I want to think some more about how to do so in a way that doesn’t do P.R. for a murder and attempted act of terrorism.) Hence, no blog post (so far). 2) The cognitive dissonance of the doctor/killer story. That guy killed another guy in a church? The abortion-services doctor was in a church? Both thought of themselves as Christians? WTF? “Man bites dog” x 100. Contrast that with the very-much-expected extremist-kills-U.S.-military-service-member. [Note: this is not a judgment on the “rightness” of covering one over the other.] Stranger stories get more coverage, period. The murder of the recruiter is horrible and tragic, but does not have the WTF factor of the former. In addition, I’m not exactly sure that I want the killer’s face plastered all over my T.V. screen, nor his act publicized. For this murder to be terrorism, we have to play along and sensationalize it (and I’m sorry, but the media will be incapable of covering this without sensationalizing it). I’m a little confused by meme that’s out there in some quarters lamenting the fact that the Taliban in Afghanistan are so quick to get their acts into the press, while many in those same quarters lament the fact that we’re not doing this guy’s P.R. for him by publicizing his act in the United States. It’s not that I don’t see your perspective re: one shooting getting more publicity than another, and you may be right that this shows a contempt for a whole category of American in… Read more »

” I’m glad this isn’t being spread around with flashy scary graphics and blaring headlines. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about that.”

I disagree, this should be splashed all over the MSM. Soldiers killed on our own soil, the war is here. These soldiers should both receive Purple Hearts, the GWOT Medal, etc. And I would bet my last dollar that he does have ties to Al-Q. As others have said, there is much more to this.

Maybe the low growth in those states without an income tax is because they had grown far more than the others in the past due to the lack of income taxes and had less room to grow. NH unemployment rate is one of the lowest and NH is 47th in receiving federal aid according to your own chart. Sorta like trying to fill a full gas tank.
