Such A Deal They Have For Us!

Feb 2011 blizzard front door
There’s a forecast in Europe for a pending blizzard that will not only hit Germany but all the parts of northern Europe that are shown on the map in the freeze frame with the article. Read the following article very carefully, top to bottom.
The author and his family live in Germany. The things he’s describing – renewables, electric grid, power shutoffs – have been going on for some time, but this is the first time this kind of massive weather threat has shown up on the news. Combine the lockdowns for Covid-19 and not being prepared for truly foul weather, and you have a major disaster sitting in the wings.
Since my own electricity went down this morning, in the middle of a harsh winter where the birds are waiting impatiently for me to put food out for them, it is nice to be able to text the power company immediately and get some results. That is NOT going to be quite so easy in Europe, if the weather map in the article is even vaguely accurate. We‘ve had heavy snows here in my kingdom – not unusual – but the cold is the real problem and when there is a power outage and no wood-burning fireplace for heat and cooking, you’re in deep trouble.
And there’s this one: a proposal in the UK that allows the utilities to switch off power with no warning or justification and no compensation, even if your bill is paid. It’s Boris Johnson’s idea of a good time to let the peasants freeze and rot to death. How Henry II can you get????

This one involves installing “smart” meters that tell the utility how much gas or electric power you use. The proposal in the article is that the utility will arbitrarily shut off your use of electricity. Why any government might think this is a good idea is inexplicable, especially since not everyone in the modern world has a fireplace to use for heat and cooking these days.
This is precisely the direction AOC and Bernie and their ilk want to take the rest of us. You think I’m kidding? You’re in the middle of a shower and the pump shuts off, which shuts off your water flow, because ELECTRIC NETWORK SHUTDOWN ORDERED for no reason, and it has nothing to do with being up to date on your bill. You’re cooking dinner on the stove and the gas flow is cut off because GAS ALLOWANCE SHUTDOWN ORDERED, for no reason, even if you’re up to date.
Modern life was good while it lasted, wasn’t it?

fyi, there are interior safe propane heaters that crank out impressive amounts of heat – we are prone to intermittent power outages and keep one with a few propane bottles as emergency backup. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-F232000-Indoor-Safe-Portable/dp/B002G51BZU/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=propane+heater&qid=1612720394&sr=8-5
Thanks for the tip.
I moved to Texas from Wisconsin because of a proven fact of basic physics…..
You can’t shovel heat…..
My electric bill runs about $100-$125/mo as an average. The A/C unit is also a heat pump and there’s very little natural gas in this part of the state.
Yep, I have the big Buddy version 18K btu’s and it is safe indoors.
Excellent for short power outages in the winter.
Works great until the propane runs out. I supplement my electric heat with one.
Wow, you have electric heat? I thought I was the only one
left on the planet that saw the light. At only 10 cents per kwh
it is cheaper than oil, gas or propane. I heat the house, garage
and two sheds for less than $500 in January and that includes
electric range, water heater and clothes dryer. Well pump also.
Cheap to instal. No maintenance. No chimney. 100% efficient.
No muss, no fuss.
Oh, and I’m in northern Maine.
While it is true that resisitive electric heat is 100% efficient it is generally much cheaper to heat with a heat pump due to thermodynamics. Not sure about Northern Maine. It might just be too damn cold for a heat pump.
I am seeing more and more heat pump installs in my area. They look awful
hanging off the side of the house but
suddenly people like them.
Have had electric heat since 2007 and would kill to get cheap efficient gas. Electric bill goes up in the winter compared to summer A/C, and I keep the thermostat at 69 winter/75 summer. All electric is costly.
The key here is cheap power.
Divide the total bill by the Kwh used and I
come up with ten cents per Kwh.
My power comes from New Brunswick Canada and
is mostly hydro (Tinker and Beechwood Dams)
with a sprinkling of Nuke from Point Lepreau.
“Why any government might think this is a good idea is inexplicable, ..”
Actually it makes perfect sense if your electric power comes from intermittent sources (renewables). As load goes up due to high demand due to heat or cold, renewables will not be able to keep up. I read that Germany had been discussing a similar bill a couple of weeks ago. California already did this last summer when the heat wave drove up demand. The surrounding states also had high demand so California could not purchase power to make up the shortfall.
Yes, it’s coming here – the grand plan of our intellectual betters. Not only will the power to run your house be renewable, so will the power to recharge your car and you will get to replace that nasty gas furnace with a heat pump and resistance coils. So the GND-ers think they’re gonna put up a crap-load of windmills, plus put up a second crap-load to replace all the stuff run by gasoline, diesel, and nat. gas.
What could possibly go wrong?
For a couple of years now folks in Kommiefornia have been conditioned to accept temporary power outages as “the new normal” so they’ll just think it’s okay. Seems to me that some years ago PG&E even offered the option of payin’ a few extra bucks so you could be assured the power comin’ to your meter was from “renewable” sources only.
Yeah, I know it’s impossible but the potential for virtue signal can’t be ignored.
The next step is to prioritize cut-offs by social scores. Deplorables get shut off first, and most frequently.
I’m seeing the two “triggers” to Boris’s “emergency electric cutoff”. Electric cars and renewable power. Talk about oil and water (subtle pun intended).
Can’t do much when TPTB Elites decide to build the power grid on “renewables”.
But how long can the proles delay not buying battery cars?
Nineteen Eighty-Four was an instruction manual for Europeans…
The photo is missing a snow shovel..outside.
Well I am living right here in central Germany: 50 percent chance of snow tonight or tomorrow. Hope it doesn’t impact my ability to hit the gym tomorrow AM.
Even if it does, shoveling snow is a good workout. I used to find it quite enjoyable.
Nope…..
Don’t miss the cold ass weather in the least !!!!
Not a bit !!!!!
Germany panicked after the nuclear plant in Japan was hit by a 9.0 earthquake (which it survived ok) and then the resultant tsunami caused a radiation leak. Germany closed (or scheduled the closing of) a lot (all?) of their nuke plants. I say panicked because I don’t think Germany has major earthquakes or tsunamis.
Welcome South Brother (and Sister) The original meaning of the call letters WSB for the FIRST Radio (later TV) stations down heah.
Rationing utilities is just another control method to keep all of the deplorables and great unwashed masses under control. Your mask will help keep you warm. Resistance is futile.
Resistance is futile? So you’re just going to throw up a white flag and quit?
BUTbutbut it makes the liberal snowfwakes feel good, doesn’t it?
Yes, Maine is too far north for a heat pump. Anywhere north of the mason-Dixon line is. We have a gas franklin stove as a backup, also kerosene heater for the basement if power goes out. And kerosene lamps and supplies to last a couple weeks. Do not trust government to take care of you- witness the covid crisis.
