Off the topic of politics…

While we wait for the results of today’s elections, let us not forget that there’s a holiday for our kind coming up very shortly. What started as a day of remembrance for the Armistice of World War I (which went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the eleventh month) became a day for all veterans after World War II. Now, as with everything in the US, it’s become a day of rampant commercialism. Fracking capitalist pigs. I didn’t serve so Joe Six-Pack could get a good price on an outdoor sofa sectional!

Well, we should at least take advantage of what the day has to offer. While we call our service buddies and reminisce about old times and those we lost along the way, go get some free shit. I’m sure most of you are like me and do not really partake of these things, but there shouldn’t be any shame in it. To a point. One of my dad’s buddies spends literally the entire day eating and taking as much free shit as he can.

Military Times has put together a list of all the benefits you can score this week.

Some of the juicier options, especially if you don’t want to go to every restaurant in town and throw around your DD-214 for a slice of pie;

  • Target: Active duty and other veterans and their families receive a 10-percent discount on a purchase, in stores or online, from Nov. 1 through Nov. 11. To get the discount, register at www.target.com/circle/military so that your eligibility can be verified. After that verification, a one-time use Target Circle offer will be available. Some exclusions apply. More information is available here.
  • Shoney’s: Offering a free, all-you-can-eat, breakfast bar on Nov. 11 from opening until 11 a.m. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy and fresh fruit are just a few of the offerings for active duty and other veterans. The free breakfast bar is dine-in only, with no purchase required, but coffee and beverages cost extra. For locations click here.
  • Applebee’s: Offering a free meal from a limited menu to active duty and other veterans on Nov. 11, at participating locations. Proof of service required; dine in only.
  • Bob Evans: Offering a free meal from a menu of seven choices to active duty and other veterans on Nov. 11. Proof of service required; dine in only. Find the nearest location here.

Thank me for my service!

I don’t hold anything against anybody taking advantage of such discounts, but I refuse to take part in the Free Shit Army! I would rather buy a homeless vet a nice breakfast???
Be sure to get out and vote if you haven’t already???
Take care folks,
Willy

One of my Army Reserve Viet/1st Golf war vet neighbors goes for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the freebees. Nothing wrong with that. In the past, I’d go to either Applebees or the Golden Corall. I’ll pass this year and wait for the china vaccine.

Always too damn many people at the freebie restaurants. I worked at Lowe’s for a while after retirement, while I was looking for a “real” job. On Veteran’s day, Independence day, and Memorial day, we could take both the employee’s 10% as well as the veteran’s 10% discounts on top of the holiday sale prices. Pretty much worked for free those weeks.

When the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was signed into law in 1968 with an effective date if 1 Jan 1971, Veteran’s day as it had come to be known was moved to the 4th Monday in October. it remained such in law until 1975 when Congress changed it back to the traditional date of 11 November effective 1978.

Harry Truman was quoted as saying this of the Marine Corps “a propaganda machine that is almost equal to Stalin’s.”

He might be accurate because it was due to the Marines that Veteran’s Day was moved back to 11 November so that Marines would have a federal holiday on which to recover from their hangovers brought about by their Marine Corps Birthday celebrations on the 10th.

Truth is stranger than fiction and so are some war stories.

Truman’s was just one more ass thoroughly kicked by the US Marine Corps.

My VFW Post is usually quite busy being a part of various commemorations of the day at local schools, churches, and around the community. The local Lion’s club at least invites us to their house for a dinner in our honor – all we have to do is show up. The rest of them? Usually we are the ones doing something while everyone else spectates. Like playing TAPS at a church service. Or being the keynote speaker at other celebrations.

As for me and mine, we will give Thanks to The One Above who Blessed us to be born in this Great Nation. We will avoid the FSA too. I have plenty of provisions for grilling, BBQing, smoking, and belly washing. A nice tight group will be mustering here at Firebase Magnolia to participate in that and make a short March down the street to the original 1808 founded Church Yard. There we can Pay Honors to Veterans of every war this Country has been in since the Rev War. For many of those Warriors, other than the Church Members cutting the grass, we are the only visitors them fellas have. Gets a little dusty as we move from marker to marker.

That afternoon/evening we’ll move up the road a piece to where the 1806 Fort was for a Flag Retirement Ceremony.

Refuse to fight the phonies to get a free meal. Hell, I got money…I ain’t got a wife.

Am sure some of you remember this one.

Jonn (RIP) posted this on 13 November 2013:

“(Phony) Veteran’s Day at Golden Corral”

Sadly, IMHO, I don’t think this type of behavior will ever stop…not when the word “FREE” is thrown out there for Phonies to take advantage of Veterans Day.

Classic.

Heard a new one last night: “Was on my way to go, went to Ft. Sill, when I got in accident the week before I was due to sign so I never signed up”. Uh, yeah, the Army always took people and transported them a week prior to any oaths and signatures…

I will be celebrating by smoking a fine cigar and raising a glass of something from Tennessee.

My sincere hope is that a cigar and whiskey will cause our resident lefty to reeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
