More racism in academia
This one comes from the University of Minnesota. City Pages reports on the conservative media outrage over an “anti-racist” class the public school is putting on.
Get a load of this;
The course is called “Deconstructing and Decentralizing White-ness in Practice.” It’s described as a sort of 12-step program: a recovery path for white people who want to be better in their daily interactions with people of color.
The idea behind the course is that white supremacy is a social construct we’re all born into and conditioned by, and it’s the responsibility of white people (as the beneficiaries of aforementioned white supremacy) to recognize that shit and make a conscious daily effort to fight it. Not unlike, say, recovering from an addiction.
In case you’re wondering what that is, they’ve got you covered with this clear, concise explanation;
In the first part of the series, instructor Cristina Combs pointed to a quote from Sonya Renee Taylor (author of The Body is Not an Apology) to help explain what this was all about:
“You are struggling in this system as well. It is killing you too… Whiteness is not about you. Whiteness is the structure into which you were born… Stop experiencing the conversation of whiteness and white supremacist delusion as who you are, and start experiencing it as something that you were assigned that is not serving you.”
Say what now? Google Sonya Renee Taylor if you dare. It appears she has made quite a niche for herself in making quotable riddles. It’s like modern art. You have to know the code in order to appreciate it, I guess.
The program includes steps like admitting to being socially conditioned by white supremacy, embracing ignorance as an invitation to learn, and taking on responsibility for the impact — not necessarily the intent — of interactions with people of color. (If you hurt someone without meaning to, it doesn’t change the fact that you hurt them and you are responsible for making amends.)
Now, the test for whether something is racist is can it be turned around and it still not be offensive? Let’s take the class’s 12-step program description and turn it around and see if it seems like a racist concept;
a recovery path for black people who want to be better in their daily interactions with white people.

Africans have had every opportunity in the world to make something of themselves and their continent. Resources abounding, yet their wealth was in cattle and slaves. Not only by sections of the country, but by city and specific news organizations. Fully 95% of the crime stories I look at are on that subject. We could run 20 or more EVERYDAY and it would only scratch the surface. There is a restriction on pictures and, now, even names plus, no listing by race in many of these stories.
I’m trying to remember exactly when it was that Jesse Jackson got away from the whole “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” to the Al Sharpton theory of “It’s all Whitey’s Fault.” These idjits (ht 2 Ex) need to listen more to the Walter Williams, Thomas Sowells, Ben Carsons, SFC Sledges, 1SG A. Black families lived out in the countryside, too, y’know. Grade school, junior high school, high school – all integrated before it was a “thing”, because there was no place else for those kids to go to school. And their parents wanted them in school.
High school sports meant that all the students could compete for college scholarships. My high school had a state championship basketball team and the majority of the players were black kids.

Part of the problem, in my view, is all of these college majors that don’t lead to real jobs. Critical Diversity Studies, Socioeconomic Inequality, Gender and Diversity Studies, Black Studies, Multiculturalism, etc.
Now, I’m not saying that any one of these is any kind of an issue, but my argument here is pure economics. How many graduates will be supported in the workforce with a paying job with these particular college majors? Maybe one can get a job in HR and handle Equal Opportunity complaints, others can write books and others can do seminars, but these are hammers in search of nails.
It’s like the big joke out in California with unemployed lawyers – they pump them through law school with the only real criteria that they can pay the tuition. Law schools do not regulate their graduates like medical schools do. The result it that lawyers get creative and that spawned the ambulance chasers of the 1980s.
So, coming back to my original point – you have a glut of people that need a problem to exist and grow in order to have themselves and their solutions be in demand.
The scary part is the people that will actually sign up for her class.
Better yet, I wonder if it will be just Black students.
As viewed through another lens, this could result in a odd sort of militant type training and “policy” enforcement class.
And then they wonder why the only jobs they can get are as barristas or ones where you ask the customer, “you want fries with that?”
