NFL Season Kicks Off – “Moment of Unity” Booed

| September 11, 2020

Well, in case you missed it the NFL season kicked off last night with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Houston Texans.  Cowboys and indians?

I tuned into the pregame show but found it was dominated by politics and discussion of racial inequality and how the NFL was dealing with it.  Players are allowed to display names of individuals that died in the hands of police.  The Black National Anthem was presented.  Then, the National Anthem followed with the singers, Chloe x Halle, wearing t-shirts with photos of George Floyd and Brianna Taylor.

I expected this to some degree but it was dominant.  I was surprised but also saddened that politics has now injected itself in a big way into the NFL.  The next logical step is for players to refuse to play over an incident just as the NBA did.  Some feel this is appropriate but others, like myself, yearn for the old days of the separation of politics and sport.

The Chiefs stayed on the sidelines for both songs, with only one player kneeling while raising his fist for the National Anthem.  The Texans elected to stay in their locker room for both songs.  This is being criticized but I think it is more a case of if they can’t all be on the same page, they avoid any distraction.

Many, and probably most that don’t even care for football, are counting and observing.  I’m sure they will be able to point out an indiscretion that can be attributed to a racist tendency.

What I found interesting was when the Chiefs and Texans lined up in the middle of the field, arms locked, and the announcer invited all to participate in “A Moment of Unity.”  I felt this was a very cringe-worthy moment, like fingernails on a chalkboard.  It came off to me as very contrived and cheapened the moment.

In my opinion, fans agreed with me and the 20% that occupied the stands gave loud ‘boo’s.

Like clockwork, the media jumped on this narrative today, offering this moment up as proof suggesting that we are a racist society.

Chiefs fans disgustingly booed during moment of unity before NFL season opener

But there was a terrible moment before kickoff, as the fans at Arrowhead could be heard booing during a moment of unity in which the two teams locked arms in the middle of the field.

Apparently many fans in the crowd don’t enjoy seeing people coming together to raise awareness for critical issues and just to support, you know, unity and equality.

Because this was disgusting:

I guess an alternate view was not considered – one that I hold – in that we came to see a football game and not to have politics shoved down our collective throats. So please, can we get back to the game?   No, no… it had to be racist.

The irony is also lost in that Colin Kaepernick kneeled but the message was lost because the act was not specific and subject to interpretation… I don’t know, like ‘boo’ing.

So now we have a stadium with 20% occupancy that is now labeled ‘disgusting’ based on an interpretation of ‘boo’ing.  With the media’s help, fans are now being targeted as terrible individuals.

Maybe the message would have been well received if 1) a little less time was dedicated to it 2) it wasn’t adorned over helmets, goalposts and jerseys and 3) the moment of participation was a lot less “corny” and contrived.

But here again, if you disagree with the message delivery you are lumped into disagreeing with the message.  This is why there should be a separation of politics and sports – because it is a slippery slope.

Mark my words – there will be a boycott/refusal to play in our near future, if COVID-19 concerns don’t gut the NFL first.  They say that one of the hardest thing for a business to do is attract back customers they have lost.  People learn to live without the product and find it is not that necessary in their lives.  This is what the NFL risks.

The NFL finally got the message with domestic violence and teams tend to cut players that are involved with domestic abuse.  Ray Rice never played again.  However, it’s ironic that the names adorned on the back of helmets, jerseys and on t-shirts are now held up and idolized.  I fully understand the distinctions but it doesn’t diminish the irony.

My point is that once you open the door, once the camel gets his nose under the tent, the arguments about ethics can freely fly.  The NFL has now taken that turn and there may be no turning back.  Now, I cannot cheer the boos because nobody will understand my message, so I will just leave it here in this blog.

It had nothing to with unity. It had all to do with kissing black ass and systemic black racism. Kudos to all those who refused to cooperate and booed that bullshit.

But… but our hipster “business thought leader” said it would be profitable!

Anonymous,
Does anyone know what the NFL will do tomorrow
with the Saints/Bucs game,
featuring a historic pairing of
Tom Brady and Drew Brees?

This game will surely draw the most viewers…
… and the most visible after action report.

So what happens to a player when he takes a knee or turns his back on the fake black kwanzaa national anthem?

“In case you missed it”

I didn’t. Professional and collegiate sports are dead to me.

AW1 Rod

Yup. I had hoped that college football would at least be spared. No such luck.

Sports are dead in this country.

On the bright side, this frees up more weekend range time.

Rodeo is still going strong, too.

Range time and rodeo – all-American sports indeed!

I still have motorcycle racing. Though maybe I’ve been lucky and I’ve avoided the attempts to create a new ‘Us vs them’ mentality in people with that sport.

NFL, MLB, NBA, and ESPN no longer exist in my home…actually for the past three years.

Screw ’em all!

The National Anthem is the “moment of unity” where we all declare to be on the same team, Team USA.

Oh, snap.

So when folks want to have a moment of unity, doff those hats, hands on hearts, and sing along “Oh say can you see…”

Poetrooper

Precisely, they are the assholes who destroyed the moment of unity.

They can take their silly substitutes and shove ’em. Last night was the first time since 1967 that I didn’t tune in for NFL opening night, and after what they pulled, I’m quite pleased with myself that I didn’t.

Guess what? Not once did I find myself curious as to what a particular score was or which teams won. Didn’t check a single score today. All of which is a bad indicator for the NFL: ol’ Poe’s finally lost interest.

Over the many decades of my long life, I’ve observed that when I finally get sick of something and say “that’s it! no more!” is when a very large segment of the American public is feeling the same way. Miz Poe has long said I’m like a public opinion barometer.

Well this barometer is indicating heavy weather for the NFL. Fuck ’em all…and that includes my former hero, Drew Brees, who’s proved to be a particularly gutless weasel.

Poetrooper

I wish someone would make this bumper sticker:

SCREW YOU DREW!

David

Interesting how the pattern seems to go ‘INNOCENT BLACK MAN MURDERED!!!” to “BLACK MAN RESISTING POLICE KILLED!” “Multiple Felon Resisting Arrest Shot” “shooting of felon on multiple drugs ruled justifiable” “mumble payoff mumble police exonerated mumble mumble’.

Sure seems that drug dealers, sexual predators, etc. are an unlikely group for these folks to hang their collective hats on.

Poetrooper

And yet they do…

Hack Stone

Well, most of the NFL players probably personally know these criminals, and if not, have friends who run in the same crowd.

Why doesn’t the NFL read off the names of all of the victims killed the previous weekend in all of the major US cities, which are run by Democrats by the way? Of course, that would require probably twenty minutes or more to the game.

Unlike the chicom-subsidized NBA, there is no overseas market for American football. In a few years, those Neeling Felons not crippled by concussions or steroids will be pumping gas or making sammiches at the local Sheetz or Wawa’s…

Unity? On what planet do they primarily reside? People need to send the National Felon League a message loud and clear in the only language they understand – MONEY (or lack thereof). Don’t watch the games, don’t buy their branded crap, and quit paying for the season tickets. Let the league pay taxes like the rest of us. When the revenues bottom out maybe they’ll figure it out. Maybe…

AW1Ed

So long, NFL. It was nice to know you.

Fjardeson

Such a shame. Some of my best memories of my Dad was watching football. Damn, it’s all over. 🙁

penguinman000

This is a side show. Entertainers, and the self felicitating bubble they live in, has them convinced their opinions are of equal weight as their ability to do their jobs. That just isn’t the case.

To paraphrase Peter Drucker, a business should steer clear of political issues that are not directly part of their business. Engage in political activities as an individual.

Any organization that ties themselves to a hot topic political cause/belief system is ceding control of their destiny to forces beyond their control needlessly. Inserting unnecessary chaos into one’s organization is not a strategy for success.

The more this goes on the more I’m convinced too many C-suite types are valuing the twitter mob over customers. Polarizing/alienating your revenue streams is never a good idea.

rgr1480

…self felicitating bubble …

felicitating transitive verb To express joy or pleasure to; to wish felicity to; to call or consider (one’s self) happy; to congratulate.

I think you meant self-fellating?

fellate verb fel·late |ˈfe-ˌlāt, fə-ˈlāt
fellated; fellating

transitive verb
: to perform fellatio on

intransitive verb
: to fellate someone

(But we knew what you meant!)

penguinman000

No, it was a subtle attempt at word play. And I’m glad someone caught it.

I’ve been using a word a day app in an attempt to decrease my use of “f” words every day. HR seems to think all the time I spent with Marines instilled some bad verbal habits.

Ex-PH2

I used to watch football, but that was when it was a sport and there was some fun in it.

Now it’s drek, has been for a long, long time.

I do not care if the sports leagues go out of business, not even a teensy weensy bit. The product is boring. There is no season, thanks to a nasty virus that got loose in the world. Drek is a polite word for it.

Fjardeson

Not to mention crooked referees and fixed games. Comments like “not a sport, entertainment”. Things like that. Sadly, they are gonna ruin MLB as well. I wrote off the NBA years ago. (Guess I can still watch golf!)

Martinjmpr

I’m sorry, but what is the “Black National Anthem?” Never heard of that before.

And I’ll echo what others have said: The danger for the NFL is that if football becomes just another venue to have politics shoved down our throats, lots of people will just tune out and do something else. After all, nobody NEEDS football.

Of course, there are many businesses out there that do depend on the revenue that football brings in – and those will be the people to lose their jobs and livelihoods as viewers tune out.

It won’t happen quickly, things like this never do. But the political hacks who think they can use the “national pastime” to lecture and harangue white Americans are likely to find out that the most effective hand-held weapon those Americans can wield is not a pistol but a remote control.

2banana

I don’t think the booing was unity per se, I think they were booing politics in sports. This is nothing but virtue signaling in the attempt to score “wokeness” points to see who ends up as the biggest loser. 30 or so black men that are millionaires don’t need to lecture me about the myth of “systematic racism”.
My son and I watched the 80’s thriller ‘War Games’ last night instead of football…it was time well spent.

USMC Steve

It has no place in sports, and it accomplished absolutely nothing. It was an attention grabbing virtue signaling empty gesture and a waste of time.

I was never into watching sports, face-to-face or on television. In fact, if it weren’t for you guys, and other posters on other social media/forums, these sport seasons would come and go and I would not even know about it.

Trying to remember when it was I gave an actual flying phuque of a rolling donut about the National Felon League. I believe it was in the late 80s when the outfit I was working for got bought out by the Multinational Inc out of Irving Tex-ass. At the get acquainted seminar they brought some of the Cowboys Cheerleaders for a meet and greet. I got real, real lucky with Ms Thang that liked guys that weren’t stuck on themselves. Her being a newbie, a Yankee Girl, and leaving a jet plane the next day, she was all over that Southern Drawl y’all.

Watched at the Falcoons when they gave away the stoopid bowl to the Patriots that year. That was the last time I’ve had anything at all to do with any of those overpaid, underworked crybabies.

I watch my Dawgs, when I can, ’bout to lose them to the sell out crowd too. Watch the Tide Roll when I want to see a real smack down. Try to watch my Army Kay Dettes kick, but again, the cable Gods won’t allow that on broadcast much either.

I don’t think people were boo’ing the moment, but rather boo’ing the moment of hypocrisy.

There was a “moment of unity” followed by the national anthem (the song that should unite us) and the flag (which should unite us) being disrespected which was followed by a ndivisive alternate anthem.

You don’t get to claim that people were wrong to boo a moment of unity when the players, teams and the NFL were themselves being divisive.

Poetrooper

NFL, who?

Green Thumb

Yeah.

oddly enough, I have adjusted.

Was never a nut, but a long time Redskins fan.

Seems that I have now been away from it for a while, I do not even really miss it. No $100 tickets, no $10 warm beers, no $10 hot dogs, no ass-to-ass packed in parking and seating, no violent drunks, etc. I usually watch from home, but really do not miss that either. Spend more time fishing, exercising, doing other things, etc.

The NFL HAS to play (like college big ball). If not, they are about to become what the airlines were after 9/11…in debt. They still have not recovered.

And to cater to 15% of the population who, by in large, spend a good deal of discretionary income on NFL gear is one thing (not that they are taken advantage of or anything and just do not know it….). But that 15% will start to lose faith when prices keep climbing. Especially if their teams do not win and the ass-kissing starts to backslide as the NFL self-proclaimed Gods start to figure out that they need to expand their marketing to the other 85% to bring in revenue.

The NFL has made it bed. Time to sleep in it.

Oh yeah, and Kap needs to make a team through a TRYOUT. Not just get assigned a starting role as QB because its the cool and socially hip thing to do.

A Proud Infidel®™

Yeah, and Kraperdick didn’t even start his attention-whoring antics until he got benched, further proof of what a candyassed little shit he really is. Hack read an interesting article a few weeks back regarding the death of professional sports, particularly the NFL. Already devastated by falling revenue due to the Corona Virus (or European Virus if you are a New York politician), those on the right will walk away due to the injection of woke politics, and those on the left are calling for boycotts because the teams are owned (owned is a racist word, by the way) by rich white guys.

Meanwhile, as professional athletes speak out against systemic racism and the oppression caused the legacy of slavery that ended in this country that ended 155 years ago, they continue to line their wallets with money generated by slave labor in Asian factories.
