What’s Really Going on with the Air Force One Photo-Op? (Operation Dumbass)

| May 5, 2009

What exactly is going on here?

The $328,835 snapshots of an Air Force One backup plane buzzing lower Manhattan last week will not be shown to the public, the White House said yesterday.

“We have no plans to release them,” an aide to President Obama told The Post, refusing to comment further.

The sole purpose of the secret photo-op, which sent thousands of New Yorkers running for cover, was to take new publicity shots of the presidential jet over the city.

“The photos . . . are classified — that’s ridiculous,” Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., said.

Making these photos (if that’s what they’re trying to hide) inaccessible will be legally problematic for the Obama administration.

First of all the President CAN NOT classify anything he wants.

Executive Order 12958 details the rules for classifying anything.

Section 1-4 details the kind of information that can be classified and what category such classification would fall into.

Sec. 1.4. Classification Categories.

Information shall not be considered for classification unless it concerns:
(a) military plans, weapons systems, or operations;

(b) foreign government information;

(c) intelligence activities (including special activities), intelligence sources or methods, or cryptology;

(d) foreign relations or foreign activities of the United States, including confidential sources;

(e) scientific, technological, or economic matters relating to the national security, which includes defense against transnational terrorism;

(f) United States Government programs for safeguarding nuclear materials or facilities;

(g) vulnerabilities or capabilities of systems, installations, infrastructures, projects, plans, or protection services relating to the national security, which includes defense against transnational terrorism; or

(h) weapons of mass destruction.

Perhaps I’m missing something but publicity photos of Air Force One scaring the shit out of thousands of people in NYC doesn’t seem to fit any of these categories.

But wait; the Executive Order goes even further; it specifies what CAN NOT be classified.

Sec. 1.7. Classification Prohibitions and Limitations.

(a) In no case shall information be classified in order to:
(1) conceal violations of law, inefficiency, or administrative error;
(2) prevent embarrassment to a person, organization, or agency;
(3) restrain competition; or
(4) prevent or delay the release of information that does not require protection in the interest of the national security.
(b) Basic scientific research information not clearly related to the national security shall not be classified.

Trying to classify (or otherwise keep from the public) the information about Operation Dumbass seems to be in particular violations of Section 1.7.a.1,2 and 4.

Having said all of this, the photos are NOT the issue here. If the blogosphere raises enough hell, the Obama administration will release some boring photos of AF1 flying over NYC and will never be asked to answer what was really going on.

This is a people issue, not a photo issue. Here is what I’d like to know specifically:

Who was onboard the 747?

Every single person and their specific reason for being there?

A list of every person that visited the 89th Airlift at Andrews AFB during the 72 hours prior to the launch of Operation Dumbass?

If it really was just a photo-op, then the only harm is realizing that our President is a dumbass.

If however, this was a flying “Lincoln Bedroom”, Barry has got a big frigging problem!

The only thing better than making impressions of Markie Post’s skull in the Lincoln bedroom headboard would be becoming one of the “Air Force One Mile High Club”.

Now, now, Raoul, this is a family blog!

Hmm, what could they be covering? George Soros on the passenger manifest? Billy Ayers, Rev. Wright? The Obama children and Michelle? Members of the “I gave $10K to Obama club”? Inquiring minds want to know, and as it was our money and there’s no way to “classify” this, we have a right to know.

Someone on that plane knows…someone between the A/C and the lowest enlisted aircrew must have thought WTF after completing the mission…it will get out…there will be leaks on this and other gaffes like there are during every administration…we used to get advice from PA not to talk directly to media when something happened that may attract attention, but these times are different and it will get out…but will the MSM pick it up or just sweep it under the rug?

Guys, I stumbled across something very interesting about this shortly after it happened and posted about it on my site … (scroll down to the section where “Red Tails” is being discussed), and the possibility this was some sort of Hollywood stunt for a movie in production:

http://infidelsparadise.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/oh-holy-shit-fans-batman-was-it-a-movie-stunt/

Paragraph that starts with: [A couple days out from the Monday morning scramble in lower Manhattan and “speculation” is being tossed about …] and the rest of the post down.

Surely more weird things happening in this country than payback to Hollywood and then covering your ass about it, huh? But perhaps none more physically disgusting …

Not releasing photos is not the same as classifying them confidential or above. What about a request under the Freedom of Information Act? IIRC, the federal government is required by law to provide the info, in this case, photos, if they are not classified. If the government tells you they’re classified, then you may have recourse to go to court and claim improper classification. You still may not win, and it’s only for those who can afford the legal fees. And lots of time.

“Operation Dumb-Ass” How appropriate. It fits in so well with the current resident fo 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Michele Malkin has filed several FOIA requests…20 days, we’ll see about the COWboy President’s transparency!

Well, they certainly can’t classify it because of “intelligence activities…” First you have to have some….

The problem with the analysis in the post is that it assumes the Obama Administration is subject to the rules.

In the Age of Obama, such things are just distractions.

I think you are right on about the “flying Lincoln Bedroom” theory. The “glare photo” they did finally release on Friday would have earned a c-/d+ in any photog class… looked more like a pilot took the photo through his canopy… last time I checked you don’t use F-16 for photo shoots… there are much better photo shoot platforms available to the friggin’ US Military… and if it was a photo shoot there would be dozens if not hundreds of photos… you telling me this was the best they got? I would really like to know who was onboard this joyride flight that sparked terror in the hearts of NYers… maybe somebody in the medial might want to ask… you think?
