A Blast from the Past, Advertising Edition (Part 2)
Some people don’t like commercials. I can’t say I care that much for most recent ones; I find most recent commercials boring or stupid.
But a few I’ve seen over the years are classics. These three IMO are worth watching again – carefully, including the backgrounds and facial expressions. Enjoy. (smile)
And one of all time best IMO:
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Category: Pointless blather, Who knows
They could rerun these today. Not as insipid as most of what’s on the tube now.
We’re telling our age if we make mention that we were working, productive members of society when these FIRST came on. And many of us were in places where American TV didn’t reach. Commercials then (and still should) reflect society as a whole. Using the demographics of the 20 something to 49 yo that is the target audience, according to the commercials of today society is made up entirely of mixed race and/or gay couples. For the rest of us real people, “…ask your/talk to your doctor to see if_______ is best for you.”
Another “Try It, You’ll Like It” version.
I’ve always liked this one:
I remember seeing some of the bloopers from multiple takes of that commercial, one of which had “Mean Joe’ saying “Hey Kid, -*BUUUUURRRP!*” because he drank so many bottles of Coke in prior takes!
The best military recruiting commercial of the 1970s:
PORT OF CALL, HONG KONG.
Liberty call,
giddy sailors running down the gangplank,
eyeballing women,
and then more women.
“NAVY. It’s not just a job…….”
lololol
Cool. Good find.
This linky works here Senior Chief!
Doomed…..
DOOMED I SAY !!!!!
Will this work?
lol
DOH !!!!!!
I recall that Saturday Night Live had a parody of these Navy “It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure” commercials.
Sailors peeling potatoes, swabbing decks, sweating in the heat….
“Port of call, Bayonnne New Jersey!”
some words about all you’ll learn and do while the swabbies are shown sweating over those nasty little jobs needed aboard ship. Ends with…
“It’s not just a job, it’s 28 dollars and 17 cents a week!”
(Not sure of the pay amount, but you get the drift!)
From “Elephant Parts”:
George V,
Found it.
Lousy quality.. but it’s the 1.
$96.78
I seem to recall an Army recruiting commercial which featured the words “Fun, Travel, Adventure”. The phrase was quite well known with us troops, and we often used the starting letters of those words, FTA, as an abbreviation. The words we meant, however, were different.
Can’t find any copies of such an Army recruiting commercial, or even any references to same. However, I did find references to a purported Army recruiting slogan from that era: “Fun, Travel, and Adventure”. So it’s entirely possible that such a commercial was made indeed – then quickly shelved as soon as someone clued in “Big Army” regarding the, um, “informal” meaning of FTA. (smile)
However, there apparently was an “FTA Show” (AKA “FTA Tour” AKA “Free The Army Show”):

Among the show’s headliners were Don Sutherland, Peter Boyle, Gary Goodrow – and Jane Fonda.
And of course, there was also this “FTA Show”. (smile)

“packed up all their stuff (hopefully)”
LOL. Hopefully, indeed.
Very nice column but I must take issue with your categorization of “malcontents”. I cannot speak about the volunteer army, where, evidently, perfect leaders make perfect decisions and everyone lived happily ever after in the Best of All Possible Armies.
I can assure you things were different in the bad old days. And it was not draftees who caused all the problems. Very few of the draftees I served with could be classified as “malcontents”. Most of them were just as good as enlistees. A fair number of draftees in the units (plural) I served in made E5 in their two years. They may not have wanted to be there but they accepted their lot and did the best they could without complaint, even those with wives and children (pay and benefits were a lot lower back then).
And there were legitimate grievances (I believe I have mentioned a few of mine here over the years) at all levels, from individual to service wide. It was not merely a matter of “bad attitude”. Believe it or not, there was a fair amount of bad military leadership in that era., it wasn’t all bad draftees and bad politicians.
I loved the speecy spicy meat ball Alka seltzer commercial BUT the NYC Italian defimation league had it pulled because they said that it stereotyped Italians with their accent in a negative way.
“a negative way”?!
Nonsense. There is an old saying, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. And another, “Physician, heal thyself”. And a more recent one, “always with the negative waves, Moriarty”.
What do you think the chances of them running this one would be? They sure wouldn’t make a toy like this either. During the lead to and the Centennial of that unpleasantness, it was not considered rayciss or unpatriotic to pay Honors to the Troops on both sides for the sacrifices that were made. Even then…Artillery…THE King of Battle!
Now THAT, was cool !!!!!
Man, that thing could take your head off.
This one was pretty funny back in the day.
And darned if it isn’t almost predictable of today:

Whoever thought that one day someone would be praising the wit and wisdom of Madison Ave.

the old Post Raisin Brand operatic ad was great. But the best of all time is still Tabasco’s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZubL4mZ5n0
How about the “John West Salmon Commercials”? (grin)
Probably will never see this one again on TV……
LOL.
Thanks. I have not seen those.
One of the more ironic recruiting commercials. Something tells me they were not Godsmack fans, or just didn’t pay attention to the lyrics:
