UN Investigator: US Drone Strike Against Soleimani “Unlawful Killing”

| July 9, 2020

The US quit the UN Human Rights Council a couple of years ago. The World Health Organization is next.  (Tina Toon/GRRRGRAPHICS.COM)

A U.N. human rights investigator concluded that the U.S. drone strike that killed Qassem Soleimani was a violation of international law. The U.S. apparently didn’t provide sufficient evidence that Soleimani was an imminent threat against us. As such, the investigator said that the U.S. violated U.N. Charter.

From Reuters:

The attack violated the U.N. Charter, Callamard wrote in a report calling for accountability for targeted killings by armed drones and for greater regulation of the weapons.

“The world is at a critical time, and possible tipping point, when it comes to the use of drones. … The Security Council is missing in action; the international community, willingly or not, stands largely silent,” Callamard, an independent investigator, told Reuters.

Callamard is due on Thursday to present her findings to the Human Rights Council, giving member states a chance to debate what action to pursue. The United States is not a member of the forum, having quit two years ago.

Soleimani, leader of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force, was a pivotal figure in orchestrating Iran’s campaign to drive U.S. forces out of Iraq, and built up Iran’s network of proxy armies across the Middle East. Washington had accused Soleimani of masterminding attacks by Iranian-aligned militias on U.S. forces in the region.

“Major General Soleimani was in charge of Iran military strategy, and actions, in Syria and Iraq. But absent an actual imminent threat to life, the course of action taken by the U.S. was unlawful,” Callamard wrote in the report.

The Iranians have arrest warrants out for President Trump and others related to the drone attack. Reuters has more information here. Thanks to AW1Ed for bringing this story to us.

Oh, so it’s okay for THEM to attack us but not OK for USA to defend ourselves.

Got it.

Does that mean that bullies should not be pounded when they pick on you in 3rd grade? Or should you just go kick them when they’re up?

I’m getting mixed signals. Maybe the UN/Whosiwhatsis/Thing should just vacate their position of self-importance and go back where they came from.

Like teachers punishing self-defense because “all violence is wrong,” you’re supposed to “tell an adult” (i.e., the UN) who does nothing.

Ex-PH2

Yes, Anonymous, I believe that’s commonly referred to as ‘bullying’ these days. I was 6 when I was in the 2nd grade and considerably smaller than the other kids, so guess who got picked on a lot? (Hint: not my doggie.)

Learned a few things as time went by.

@Ex;
When I was 6, I was your age EX/Grin.

Bosun, give Mr. Jeff LPH 3 a dozen from the cat. Well laid on, if you please.

Ok Ed, I know when I’m Whipped but I just can’t help it.

When one fights back and refuses to accept a bully’s control, it becomes “peer conflict” and bullying experts run for the hills (especially after hearing you won). Educators (like other Democrat/Leftist bureaucrats) take away your right to self-defense while refusing to protect you– good citizens are helpless citizens, comrade!

Graybeard

When Eldest Son was in high school, there was this one guy that kept trying to provoke him into a fight. He ignored him, but asked me what to do.

I said he should continue to ignore the provocations, but should the bully actually hit him, to respond with overwhelming force – hitting the bully until he no longer tried to get off the floor.

I also told him the school may try to punish him – but I’d back him all the way.

In another incident, a niece was getting badly maligned in elementary school – and the teacher did nothing. She caught the punk on the playground and had him crying on the ground.

She got detention from the school, and accolades from all family members.

Heck yeah. “Violence solves a lot more than we all like to admit,” I assured 38 years ago– some folk just need an ass-whupping in order to be prosocial and not harm other people. And, if you won’t defend people, you’ve got no right to complain when they do it themselves.

When I was in the 7th grade, I was being harassed by three young hoodlums, one in my class and two older boys. Instead of complaining to a teacher, I just told my father, who had a terrible temper. He went out that night and visited the fathers of two of the boys. He told them in no uncertain terms that if I had any further trouble from their sons, the fathers were going to get a beat down. I wasn’t there when the angry doorstep confrontations occurred. But they worked. All three of them avoided me like the plague. It was extreme “social distancing” at school for the next two years.

The next time I was threatened with school beatings, I personally solved the problem with the Sam Colt SAA solution. That is when I learned one can successfully threaten more force than one is privileged to use. That was in a little town in Washington back in 1959 when a kid living away from home could get away with that sort of thing. The Old Man solution was not available, as he lived four states away with the rest of the family. My assailants never reported me pointing a pistol at them when they showed up at my great aunt’s house. But word around school was not to mess with me. So, threats of violence are frequently a solution to threats from others.

Also, trolls who “fell down the stairs” while out perpertratin’ tend not to want to admit that.

Concur. Refused to get beat-on in a nasty urban environment when I was 9 (or so) and won, in my case. Stuff wasn’t “serious” until somebody wound up dead or hurt bad back then (10 times overseas w/ the Army has been safer and more fun).

P.S. Cringe if y’all must at that, but it’s what I got.

Some of the great nations on the UNHRC:
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Venezuela
Indonesia
Mexico
Sudan
Somalia

Only the best get to sit and judge, I guess! Rush is right. It’s the Star Wars bar scene at the UN.

Oops – posted similar down a couple.

Great minds think alike. Or something.

I came here to post the same thing, but you two beat me to it.

Aren’t we missing AOC and her crew..

FuzeVT

I’m not!

All of those countries have stellar human rights records, so we should really listen to them.

A Proud Infidel®™

The only way to improve would be to add Sudan and Libya, both of which still practice slavery.

A Proud Infidel®™

*OOPS!* Sudan is already there, just Libya.

Fyrfighter

Now more than ever, it becomes apparent that the UN needs to get the same treatment that the WHO just did.. I’m sure the real estate they’re taking up in NYC is quite valuable..

Fjardeson

Like I’ve said before, we can always convert the UN building to low-rent housing 🙂

Which countries sit on the UN Human Rights Council this week? Well, according to our beloved wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Human_Rights_Council

Somalia? Really?? Pakistan and Libya, too. The list does look a bit better than a few years ago, but still.

“…debate what action to pursue.” Screw ’em. To paraphrase another loud mouth waste of oxygen and skin, “…You get a drone strike, you get a drone strike, everybody gets a drone strike…”

Oh, and btw, screw the General. Bitch got what he deserved. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, had oughta stayed his azz at home. And his nose out of other country’s business. Behold my barren field…. I have none to give!

26Limabeans

That UN building must have a massive steel frame to withstand
the wind load. Flat as a board and the radar signature of a wall,
one wonders why the 9-11 terrorists didn’t fly through it.

Oh, never mind.

Get a load of the sculpture in front of the UN:

Nobody gonna tear that down.

How quaint!

SONOFABITCH, the damn thing actually exists? I’d break it up for scrap without a second thought!

Huey Jock

Well, at least they used my 19-2 as a model.

A good man with a good saw can fix that right quick.

Willy Peter will turn it into a blob of shit.

Slow Joe

Invertebrate U.N. human rights investigators will do everything to protect the enemies of America.

USMC Steve

And their taking of our sailors and their boats was an overt act of war too. You didn’t see Obama complaining, did you…wait, never mind. Given that this dude was head of operations for a sponsor of state terror, yes, he was indeed a legitimate target. And it got the muzzies’ attention for a while too.

A Proud Infidel®™

I myself say FUCK the United Nothing, has there ever been a more corrupt, inept and incompetent assembly of BOOBS in Human History?

Like Van Damme called it:

Mike B USAF Retired

When my oldest went through his “Goth” period before the Marines made a man of him. He was being singled out by a school administrator constantly. I met with said administrator and the principle.

As we were discussing this the administrator replied “When you look different, you deserve to be picked on”. I was floored, so I replied with is this a kind of racism, and I wonder what the local newspaper would think?

OMG the principle almost fainted. I went on to say that I was shocked that a person, whom was a minority himself (The administrator) wouid hold such beliefs.

Needless to say the principle, put an end to the harassment. Shucks I wonder what the newspaper would have done if I sent them the information.

Hack Stone

Weren’t we supposed to be in all out with Iran back when this happened? Hack was promised WWIII. Where the hell is our WWIII?

And in the unlikely event that Joe Biden somehow manages to win this coming November, can we expect all of his supporters to head on down to MEPPS to enlist like they were asking about Trump supporters when this transpired?

Retired Grunt

If you really want to have to fight hack…. I’ll be beside you. I pray it never happens.

Mason

Hearing from the UN that they think you violated international law is like hearing on CNN that new polling data shows Trump is 99% likely to lose. It’s just hot air.

That NINJA missal is cool.

I prefer “Swords of Doom”. Badass tool. Total destruction, no collateral damage.

“Blades of Glory from the Sky”!

They are telling us what they fear, and that they have no effective counter.

In other words, the “terror” boot is being applied to those who thought they had a monopoly.

Exploit that.

“Hey. What if the Americans stop caring what other people think about them?”

“Uh… That would be bad. Very very bad.”

Retired Grunt

Fudge the U.N…… FUDGE THEM ALL… Im an American soldier not a U.N. soldier
