Boston bombing; One down, one on the run (Updated)
Scroll for updates
According to Fox News, one of the suspects in the bombing at the Boston Marathon has been killed and the other has killed a police officer and stolen a car (the guy in the white cap, they say). That one is still on the loose;
State police spokesman David Procopio told news agency, “The incident in Watertown did involve what we believe to be explosive devices possibly, potentially, being used against the police officers.”
Fox News reporters on the scene cannot yet confirm these reports.
Earlier Friday, Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said the MIT officer was responding to a report of a disturbance when he was shot multiple times late Thursday. He later died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.
Procopio said the shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building. The area was cordoned off and surrounded by responding law enforcement agencies, according to a posting on the university’s website.
Watching the local NBC News here, there was a press conference by the police who say they’ve shut down Watertown, MA, not allowing anyone in or out of town and they’ve told businesses to not open today. The local news also reports that both suspects have only been in the country for a year or saw and have international ties, but, again, there has been so much misinformation in this case, tale it all with a grain of salt.
From NBC4 in DC, this video taken with a cell phone of the shoot out at MIT;

UPDATE: The local CBS News reports that the second suspect is a 19-year-old Chechen named Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Bloomberg reports that one of the victims of the bombing helped identify the Tsarnaev brothers.
Here’s a video of Dzhokar, I think, not that you can understand him;
Fox News is saying that the brothers were here on a US taxpayer funded scholarship. So I guess the bombing was just their way of saying “Thanks, America”.
For some reason, MSNBC is saying he’s from Kzyrkistan.
CNN is interviewing a high school friend who thinks he was radicalized recently, that he was “forced” into terrorism.
CNN is reduced to reporting smells. CNN news chick; The police have their hands on the barrel of their guns…not the barrel…[pause]…the base of thier guns….
CNN reports that police are moving the media back and expanding their taped-off area. FBI’s HRT has arrived on the scene.
Fox reports that Associated Press talked to his father, in Russia, who said he is a 2d year medical student. He’s a “true angel“.
CNN is a bunch idiots. He just said that the older brother was “a boxer, a two-time Golden Globe winner”
CNN is pulling a Treyvon Martin thing – showing pictures of the misguided youth when he was a couple of years younger instead of the pictures of him robbing a convenience store or planting a bomb.
Meanwhile, MSNBC is trying to convince us that there is no terror network – that these two set off on their own to bomb Boston, which may well be the case, but stop driving so hard for the loop.
MSNBC is also reporting that a third suspect has been apprehended on a train to Connecticut.
According to MSNBC, the police found an unexploded IED at the train station in Boston which is why they shut down Boston.
Media is speculating that this video was posted to YouTube by the older brother on his account “The Emergence of Prophecy: The Black Flags From Khorasan”;
Bill Hemmer at Fox News says he heard shots fired, and something about an explosion near the Dunkin Donuts which solves the mystery, because, ya know, America runs on Dunkin. That’s been their target all along.
In regards to Sean Collier, the officer who was killed.
Category: Crime, Terror War
With you completely, OT.
@ #45: You are entitled to your opinion, but I am entitled to scoff at your ignorance.
45 Yeah ok pinko, you’re not pulling the wool over nayone’s eyes here.
48- Totally agree. Too bad SOMEBODY decided to give up on Iraq/A-stan, at least if those were still being fought like they should be the little bastards would’ve gotten wasted over there before they got the chance to kill American kids here. Of course, don’t expect anyone to give George Bush the credit he deserves.
The video is of the guy speaking Russian in various Caucusus accents… first Armenian, then Georgian, Dagestani, Chechen, Ossetian, Kvardinski, etc. Nothing serious, just being funny, talking ganster stuff…
CTIC(SG)
Jorge, what you’re saying is that he is someone who could blend in anywhere in Asia Minor? That is a serious skill.
Speaking of professors, I just returned from Winchester, VA, and heard a Professor M. Greenburg (Univ of MD) doing a radio interview. Before I heard his name and title, I heard what he had to say–and I was pounding the steering wheel! This PROFESSOR was doing the lingo limbo, invoking Timothy McVeigh, no less, trying to separate the Marathon Murders from any issue of Islam and terrorism. After all, he pointed out, they have reportedly been in the USA for over a year (I know–reports now say 10) and their connections are, therefore, distant. @#!!&$#!!11!!! Is there a liberal scorekeeper somewhere who awards points for this sort of stuff? Are professors awarded tenure for their contributions to liberalism and upside down and sideways pronouncements? This is lunacy.
@Ex-PH2 Well, it was always a huge joke in Russia about the “hicks” from the Kavkaz. Yeah, he was exagerating the accents quite a bit, but he could pose as someone from any of those countries, I imagine.
CORRECTION TO CMT 56: The prof’s name is Michael Greenberger. He teaches law. And then there’s this:
“While in the Justice Department, Professor Greenberger was responsible for supervising a number of counterterrorism programs. In May 2002, Professor Greenberger became the founding director of the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security (CHHS), which now has
a staff more than 70 professionals working on a broad range of homeland security and emergency response issues….” […]Professor Greenberger currently serves as the Chair of the Maryland Governor’s Emergency Management Advisory Council (GEMAC).”
Great. Just great.
I’m not sure I believe anything reported on the news until it’s been out for a full 24 hrs any more. If only somebody would invent a kind of “paper” filled with “news” that’s been out long enough not to be hearsay.
Believe that the powers that be will minimize, degrade, and downplay any connection these two had to Islamists if it is at all possible. If this suprises you, you haven’t been paying attention recently.
MSNBC reports that the police have brought in porta-potties. Shit just got serious.
Jonn…..MSNBC? Are you doing opposition research?
Thankfully there were patriotic Americans like Carlos Arrendondo at the scene to help save lives.
I’m not so sure about the PintoNag.
Currently the media is focusing on the fact these two came from Chechnya, a hotbed for Islamic fundamentalism and insurgency.
It’s odd that they would target Americans, but at this point nothing is impossible.
What I am waiting for is the other suspect to be caught so he could give a motive. I’m especially waiting for the “manifesto” to be discovered and publicized (if any).
The older brother was the one who said he had no American friends, even though they both had been here ten years. The younger one, still alive, now a fugitive, apparently had a lot of friends who have all said they never saw this side of him.
Mind you, I’m not disputing the idea that this is some sort of jihadist act. I prefer to not assume that it is unless the police find something jihadist-related. It is really annoying when the TV reporters trying to make a name for themselves speculate about it.
However, if, as Jorge has pointed out, the older brother – now dead – was able to blend in anywhere because of his ability to mimic accents, and could probably easily absorb colloquial expressions and slang, too, then it’s a reasonable guess that there MIGHT be a connection to jihad. But that does NOT say that there IS a connection.
@47: I think the reason the number seems high is due to two main factors – one, the publicity it gets when it happens, and two, confirmation bias.
Take a different example – that of teachers sleeping with their underage students – and you can find hundreds of stories about such things, seemingly with it happening all the time. But we don’t make stories about when this DOESN’T happen, so all the publicity is for the rare events. I’ve never known any of my teachers to do that, have you? Yet if you read the news, you’d think it’s a pandemic.
As for confirmation bias, people are inclined to believe what they want to believe, and ‘find’ facts to support that. If you believe teachers preach anti-American sentiments, every time you come across a news story about it it sticks with you. But chances are you gloss over stories that don’t fit that. This isn’t an attack on you, it happens to both sides. The ‘veterans are dangerous tinder-boxes ready to explode’ notion is MUCH more prevalent amongst liberal circles because that’s something they ‘want’ to believe. (Not that they want to think veterans are unstable, but it fits their view that we shouldn’t be at war.)
I’ve known people at some of the most liberal institutions around and the VAST majority of teachers were very ‘pro-America’ – in fact, it’s even strange to put it that way because it’s the default position for most. There were a few that I didn’t know personally who, if we as a country cured cancer would somehow blame us for it, but they’re very few and far between and not indicative of the faculty at large.
@ Hondo: I can’t fault you for your experiences, and ultimately you might be correct – it is completely conceivable that the percentage of anti-American professors is higher than the fraction of military veterans who are ‘messed up’. I’d say, however, that in BOTH cases, the numbers are pretty damn low and not representative of either group as a whole.
Add to that the number of non-American professors, and the statistics get a little harder – you’d expect some non-American professors to have different views than the American ones. It’s a bit like the statistics that show higher suicide rates amongst veterans than the general population — it’s only true when you don’t factor in the details. (More men in the military, age factors, etc.)
There’s another thing. The ricin-laced mail sent to legislators and to the White house happened very quickly after the Boston bombing. The guy who did that was an Elvis impersonator.
This morning, there was a news item that someone had sent a suspicious letter, presumed carrying explosives, to the German president.
These may seem like isolated incidents, but maybe they are not. They are rather close together in timing to be isolated.
Well, I guess the Libtards are wetting their wadded panties and watering their lattes with tears. So much for the angry-white men-TEA Party-conservative meme.
My prayers for the killed and injured police officers, one of which apparently never had a chance.
For the Libtards, not so much. They can continue to cry alligator tears. HEY! MATTHEWS!! WHAT’CHA GOTTA SAY NOW?? (fuckin’ asswipe)
@ Paratus: I’m hardly a pinko. I just have spent a lot of time around some of the most liberal educational institutions around and am speaking plainly of what I’ve seen.
Well,
SOMEONE was helping these little rat bastards. The BPD is saying that they were tossing grenades AND pipebombs at them during the standoff/chase, and that the “pipebombs” appeared to have military-grade explosives.
That isn’t something you can just gin upp at home, regardless of any mad chemistry skills you might have.
@64 I have to use Bosnia as the example that I remember. What I remember hearing was that Christians were slaughtering Muslims for political reasons, and that’s why we got involved. That sounded so bizarre to me, that I started looking for other sources of information, and found the basis of the truth in — of all places — Soldier of Fortune Magazine. That’s where I ran into the concepts of Islamic fundamentalism and the insurgency.
So, do I turn a jaundiced eye on the MSM and what they will tell the American public about the actual motivations of these bombers if they are indeed radicalized Muslims? The answer to that would be ‘Yes.’
@71: I’d be surprised if the bit about ‘military grade explosives’ ends up being true in the end; if they had access to those, wouldn’t they have used them at the marathon?
I’d love to see them take this guy alive, but that seems pretty damn unlikely at this point.
@71: Supposedly, they stopped a car at the Canadian border with a couple Russians in it that might have ties to these two chuckleheads. I’m not going to go out on a limb and say they could be involved, because at this point, the media is grasping at anything.
It is interesting how many of the national news outlets are turning themselves into pretzels trying to stamp down any speculation on the brothers and their motivation. They seemed to have no problem identifying straw men prior to their identifications.

AW1 Tim, I agree that someone may have been helping them. On the other hand, if you take freshman college chemistry, you can find the formula for TNT written out in precise chemistry. If you’re smart enough to figure out basic chemistry, you’d be surprised what you can do with no help.
Nichols and McVeigh made a truck bomb out of fertilizer and fuel oil. The fertilizer plant that exploded in West, Texas yesterday, killed so many people, and destroyed most of that town, demonstrates clearly how easy it is to make something out of that stuff and how dangerous it is if not handled properly. Even sugar explodes when conditions are right.
When the idiot reporters use the term ‘military grade explosives’, they’re the last people we should be listening to.
Who was the guy from Gathering of Eagles that attacked Carlos Arrendondo?
@78. What? He attacked himself after he blindsided the GOE gentleman?
@77: I’m standing by my previous statements on the bombers. The type of devices used have been used before by muslim terrorists on crowds of people. McVeigh used a rental truck filled with fuel and fertilizer to blow up a building, dead people were the by-product of the main thrust of the bombing. That’s not the case with most terrorist attacks of this type. Since McVeigh; how many times have homegrown, whitebread, angry at the gummint, rightwing extremists attacks have there been or followed the same methodology as McVeigh? How many homegrown, whitebread, angry at the gummint, rightwing extremists attacks have targeted innocent civilian crowds with small, portable explosive devices? How many jihadi attacks have done so (including London and Madrid)? How many failed jihadi attacks here have used the same methodology as employed in Boston?
I stand by my statements.
@78 This is not the time, place, or thread for that discussion. Can it.
I’m fairly certain a few members of GOE ran up on his display for his son, knocked him down, and kicked him while he was down. I remember there being some conclusive pictures of the event.
@80 – Wasn’t arguing, just making a non-political point, because we do not yet have motivation or connections for this act.
Maybe these two were just copycats. Or maybe, because we don’t know where the older brother was running around before he came to the USA, he got the training in one or more of those places where he was able to pick up those accents he displayed.
@81 Yes it is. Those who judged his character were wrong and unfortunately it took (more) tragedy to vindicate him.
I will tell you what makes me sad. When this first happened, my wife said to me “I just pray this guy is not a veteran”. At first I was a little pissed, but then I understood what she was trying to say. That is the story line that the press prays for (those that are not atheists). A drug addled gun loving veteran who has a grudge against the government. My God, it would be like Christmas in April!!! Like finding the Holy Grail!!! These ass clown “reporters” who will not report that the two brothers are Muslims until the evidence becomes overwhelming will surmise it was a “right winger” or a veteran in a quick minute. But God forbid we accuse Muslims….you know, the assholes that have been responsible for every terror attack of note since 9/11. O.K. Had to vent. God Bless the law enforcement community as they continue to try to protect the homeland. And God Bless the families of the officers who were killed and hurt by these vermin.
And Jonn, you have the opportunity to write something positive about Carlos.
More quotes from the dad:
The elder Tsarnaev insisted that his sons were innocent, but said he would appeal to his son to “surrender peacefully.”
“Give up. Give up. You have a bright future ahead of you. Come home to Russia,” the dad said.
The father warned, however, “If they killed him, then all hell would break loose.”
“If they kill my second child, I will know that it is an inside job, a hit job. The police are to blame,” the father told ABC News. “Someone, some organization is out to get them.”

News flash for you, Pops – Sonny boy ain’t coming home, unless it’s in a body bag.
Since it’s a federal crime, Sonny boy will face the possibility of the death penalty…which Massachusetts doesn’t have.
@69
HEY! MATTHEWS!! WHAT’CHA GOTTA SAY NOW??
I’m betting…nothing. Those types don’t have the intellectual integrity. Matthews surely doesn’t. If he had one moral fiber, he would have quit long ago and slunk off to some forgotten backwater of the world long ago to live out his days in anonymity.

Interview vid with the uncle
@85
I will tell you what makes me sad. When this first happened, my wife said to me “I just pray this guy is not a veteran”.
I hear you. I cringe inside when any of these assholes start up because I really, really don’t want the actor to turn out to be a Vet.
full vid with the “uncle”.
The older brother had a bomb strapped on and is dead. He wanted to die.
The younger brother is in hiding. If he wanted to die, as in jihadism, he’d be dead by now.
Ex-PH2: not necessarily. I hope you’re right, but I frankly doubt it.
My guess is that this guy is (1) waiting for the police to find him so he can try and take out the maximum number of police possible, or (2) waiting for an opportunity to get to a public place and take a bunch of innocents with him. Both tactics are common among jihadist suicide bombers.
I understand Boston is pretty effectively “locked down” today. That will reduce crowds, and thus the chances of the latter.
Since they were raised and went to school in Mass.’ upscale areas the Chechen President must be correct when he states that it’s Americas upbringing that is at fault!

Anon (86): you might have more credibility if you could spell “Arredondo” correctly. There’s no letter “N” in the name.
Arredondo’s been given credit here already:
http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=35157
I’ve also seen at least one eyewitness account of the GOE incident you reference indicating that Arredondo was the aggressor in that incident vice the victim, and that Arredondo caused the target of his attack substantial injury. So regarding what you read about Arredondo on Wikipedia – don’t take it as Gospel.
Wikipedia is a suspect source, is often biased, and is sometimes erroneous. You should always take what you read on Wikipedia with a large grain of salt if you don’t have substantial personal knowledge of the subject.
@ #93: Based upon nothing in particular other than the time elapsed so far and a couple of what appear to be missed opportunites to take out a fairly large number of cops, my gut is saying that he is looking for an excuse to be captured alive.
This one is, after all, more “American” than his older brother, and may have, perhaps, less conviction toward the cause? Of course, there is that whole “I must avenge my brother” thing which could easily override whatever default position he might otherwise take.
We got CNN on here at work and they are going ape shit over the fact that a Blackhawk landed and took off.
@93: I hope we take him alive, too – one counter-point to the notion of wanting to take as many innocent as possible is that they apparently let the guy they carjacked go unharmed. It’s hard to reconcile this with the blatant shooting of the cop (perhaps for a second gun?) and the bombings themselves.
I must say that I agree with Allen West’s post on Facebook…
“Let me be very clear, the terrorist attack in Boston and evolving events indicate we have a domestic radical Islamic terror problem in America. We must no longer allow the disciples of political correctness and the acolytes of the Muslim Brotherhood (CAIR, ISNA, MPAC, MAS) to preach to us some misconceived definition of tolerance and subservience. When tolerance becomes a one way street it leads to cultural suicide. Carlos Bledsoe in Little Rock, MAJ Hasan in Ft Hood, the Ft Dix Six, Faisal Shahazad in NYC Times Square — these are just the examples I can type now. When Rep Peter King attempted to have hearings on domestic terrorism he was attacked for being racist. No more excuses. No more apologies. We are in a war of ideological wills, and we shall prevail. Congratulations to all the law enforcement agencies.”
@96: I also wonder, given the different demeanor both brothers have shown, if the more lethal (and considerably larger) blast was from the brother’s explosives, and this guy’s heart is only half in it. That wouldn’t excuse a damn thing, but would raise the chances for taking him alive.
