Weather the Storm

Photograph by RJ Hooper, National Geographic Your Shot

Waiting for a storm to pass in Utah’s Zion National Park paid off for Your Shot member RJ Hooper, who submitted this image of a rainbow stretched across a golden, post-tempest sky. “A brutal autumn thunderstorm rocked the higher elevations of Zion,” he says. “I hunkered next to some bushes to wait out the storm, [and] it paid off!”

Damn you’re good.

First, or close

Frankie Cee "In the clear"

I just finished reading today’s filings by Bernutless, and dropped over here just in time to see the post come up. Hadn’t been close before, but hadn’t tried either. I claim “First” on more Feel Good Stories than anyone though. Just sayin’.

Silentium Est Aureum

You guys are going to have to post or link to some of this shit.

I’m still stuck in the corn for another month until I head back to Casa de SEA.

I need the laugh.

It’s just as muggy in my kingdom as it is in the cornfields, SEA. It’s the prairie. It’ll clear up.

Silentium Est Aureum

Yeah. Been outside working most of the past month. The first week here was brutal.

Last 2 days I’ve downed probably 6-8 bottles of water a day. Showers after work are a must.

Hack Stone

Third. Dang! Following the success of the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters, Hack Stone is developing a remake of another 1980’s classic. I just hope that I get treated better on Twitter than the makers of the new Ghostbusters. Back To Employment In the year 2016, our hero, Palmer McFly visits the laboratory of the town eccentric, crazy Doc Bernath. Doc Bernath shows Palmer his latest invention, a 1980’s vintage Jaguar modified to travel through time. They take the time travelling Jaguar to a potato field 200 yards southeast of Sisters Eagle Airport, and Doc Bernath places his pet LRRP/translator, Dullass, in the driver’s seat. Dullass travels back in time and returns successfully, with the slight exception that he now randomly capitalizes letters throughout his emails. Suddenly, a van full of process servers and bill collectors pulls up to the scene in order to serve Palmer for his latest round of lawsuits. Palmer leaps into the vintage Jaguar in order to escape, and is transported back to Bethesda MD in the year 2013. Palmer meets up with Doc Bernath in 2013. Doc Bernath tells him not to have any interaction with anyone in 2013, otherwise it will have dire repercussions on future events. Ignoring the warnings, Palmer visits himself, and tells him that defending his boss, Biff Monkress, from exposure on the internet of stolen valor blogs may not be such a great idea, career wise. He also instructs himself to spend the extra $4 and buy a mailbox with a door. Palmer then reaches into the pocket of his $3 leisure suit, and notice that the brochure for the proud woman owned software company that he is the Vice President of, one Elaine Ricci, is slowly disappearing. If she completely disappears from the company brochure, the proud woman owned business will never exist, thus Palmer will never be a Vice President. It is up to Palmer to set things right so that Elaine Ricci will exist, and just won’t be the figment of his imagination. Oh, and did I mention that he can’t get back to the present because Crazy… Read more »

I was thinking of a remake myself, a tropical-themed remake of “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” but it would be “Attack of the Killer Coconuts”, but studios have turned it down out of the fear of lawsuits from Non-CPOs listed as “Ineligible to Practice Law”, THE WUSSES!

If anyone is interested, the reason why may be found here.

Let’s just say that being “Not Eligible to Practice Law” doesn’t appear to have been a voluntary decision on Danni-boi’s part.

Moreover, reputedly that’s not the only court that has, shall we say, a less than stellar opinion of the individual.

I don’t know how these open threads work, so if serious questions are best kept for another thread, I’ll save this for another time. But in the talk about the GOP support for the military, there wasn’t any mention of Mr. Trump’s comments on NATO — comments which, to me, seem pretty dangerous as they question our commitment to alliances.

I’m not trolling, I’m genuinely interested in hearing what people here think about a Presidential candidate suggesting we might not honor a treaty and aid de facto allies? (I assure you I’m aware that Turkey is regrettably an utter shit-show right now, but as a matter of precedent that sounded bad.)

Any thoughts?

Skippy

Maybe it’s time for NATO to step up and do some of there own work instead of us footing the bill for there defense

sj

^^^Word. I spent many years on a program to get NATO to buy and operate a surveillance platform like they did with NATO AWACS. I had a senior German tell me “why should we buy it…you’ll bring yours if we ever need it”.

LC

I think that’s fair. I guess my view, though, elaborated below in my reply to B Woodman, is that NATO serves as a foil to Russian aggression in Europe, and works well in that regard provided it’s understood that the alliance is strong. Weakening that perception is dangerous.

Mind you, our NATO allies not doing their part is also dangerous, but that’s something I think is better tackled by kicking countries who are not part of NATO out, not by saying we won’t necessarily honor our treaties.

B Woodman

I think we need to look at any/all NATO and alliance treaties, and look for ways to back out of them. Europe is in SUCH a mess, politically, financially, and socially (muzzie open invitation invasion), that if we go to Europe by invitation, we will find ourselves (U S troops), not half stepping, but quarter stepping, tying ourselves in red-ribbon PC knots, tied to other nations whose goals aren’t necessarily the same as ours, and not accomplishing anything useful, just wasting more money and lives (which we can ill afford to lose any more of either).

If we go back at all , it needs to be due to American national interests, we need to go in Reagan “cowboy” style, on our own if necessary, unencumbered by anyone else’s PCness, in it to win it. Totally. No more “nation building”. That way lies historical eventual defeat.

LC

We probably disagree slightly over how much of a mess Europe is, but I certainly won’t argue with you that most of the NATO countries aren’t doing their part in terms of the treaty. I guess my point of view, though, is that NATO exists as a bulwark against Russian aggression (and arguably Chinese aggression these days too, though that’s less of a problem in that area). It wasn’t designed for these new conflicts with terrorists or the highly debated question of whether direct action in the Middle East leads to more safety on the homefront.

And it’s value as a formidable opposition to Russian aggression rests largely with the implicit understanding that an attack against any member is the same as an attack against any other. Now, if we backpedal from that, it seems to say to Putin that we aren’t serious about this. It’s a tiered solution, and some countries who are signed members of NATO are less important. That, to me, sounds like a dangerous precedent.

Whenever I hear something that sets off alarm bells like this, I have to ask myself if I’d feel the same way if the politician on the other side of the political fence said the same words. My guess is that if President Obama suggested we might not defend a de facto ally, there’d be a lot of upset voices here.

I’m all for re-evaluating our needs and alliances with the evolving times, but in this case I think NATO exists as a foil to Russia, and does fairly well in that regard. I don’t want to see that ‘wall’ come down, even if we have other issues with NATO states. Let’s find other ways to address that, ideally in private and not with tipping our hand to our Russian friends.

I’m quite happy to hear contrary opinions; this is admittedly not my area of expertise.

IDC SARC

I’ve been wondering how many NATO countries have to be attacked by terrorists before NATO actually does something.

…and tell me again what exactly does the United Nations do?!?

ex-OS2

“…and tell me again what exactly does the United Nations do?!?”

Not one fucking thing IDC SARC. NATO is like a money pit house in the ghetto.

A Proud Infidel®™

AskaMarine

IDC SARC:

I ask that same question to myself almost everyday.

?

LC

I wrote a long response to B Woodman above, but my take on it is that NATO’s primary focus is presenting a unified defense against Russian aggression. Terrorism is a lot more complicated because we aren’t fighting a nation, and the way we’re fighting the War on Terror has plenty of detractors, especially in Europe.

There’s a big difference between stopping Russian tanks from crossing your borders and hitting a bunch of people you think are potential terrorists, in their own land, with drone strikes, in order to stop those people from traveling to your own land to kill citizens, even without direct evidence that they’re planning on doing exactly that. Trying to push that sort of arrangement under the umbrella of NATO is complicated, I think.

I’m fully in favor of a more unified approach and additional assets to fight terrorism, but it’s a separate issue to Russian (and arguably Chinese) aggression, I think.

Pinto Nag

What we are, and what we have been to NATO for many years, are hired bodies that will be used to stop bullets and take the blame for the results of Europe’s political stupidity. Oh, and we’re the cash cow. We need to get out of there, and our “allies” need to weed their own damn yard for awhile.

David

On one hand I boil over at the thought of not honoring our commitments…on the other, I don’t remember any of those commitments being made to the EU, just to partner countries. As a whole the EU seems to be cut from Obama-cloth. Some of the individual countries I would be very upset if we didn’t defend.

I think that Mr. Trump is saying things that need to be said out loud because people are not willing to face those subjects.

LC

In broad terms I appreciate his lack of a filter and it’s often refreshing compared to Mrs. Clinton’s carefully-focus-tested canned responses to every question… but suggesting we might not support an ally strikes me of questionable judgement.

It’s like how I’m all for people being able to speak their mind, but if you yell “Fire!” in a movie theater or, say, “Allahu akbar!” in an airport, there are going to be consequences, even if you’re just trying to make a point.

Hondo

. . . but suggesting we might not support an ally strikes me of questionable judgement.

Really? Strikes me more as the US returning the favor.

Regarding Turkey: Remember how “swimmingly” Turkey supported the US in 2003? As in, refused to let the US use bases there in support of OIF?

I can’t say I have much use for NATO members who pick and choose when they will – and will not – support the US; an unreliable ally is often worse than not having that nation as an ally at all. And pretty much all of the original 16 NATO members have been guilty of that at one point or another. Want proof? Look at Vietnam.

Being in NATO was in the US national interest when the USSR posed an existential threat to Western Democracy. Russia no longer poses that same threat. (They still pose a threat, but one an order of magnitude smaller than the USSR did at the height of the Cold War; they no longer threaten our very existence via conventional war.). Further, the European NATO members have proven historically unwilling to shoulder their fair share of the common NATO burden.

In light of the above, it is IMO fair to question whether NATO has outlived its usefulness for the US.

B Woodman

I HATE when that fire/theater analogy is used. Please use it correctly. It’s, “you cannot yell “FIRE” falsely in a crowded theater.” That changes the total intent of the sentence.

As to the “aloha snackbar” at the airport, you’re on your own.

A Proud Infidel®™

IMHO one main reason Trump beat his sixteen other competitors for the nomination is that he sounded off on issues that have been irritating people for decades and store his ground once he did. All the other candidates have been regurgitating talking points handed to them by focus groups and sugar-coated political correctness as well as flip flops right and left! The establishment types offered in the past two Presidential Elections wouldn’t do anything other than what their coaches and handlers told them, things like playing “Aw, shucks Mr. Nice Guy” when they should have been going for their opponents’ carotid while holding their feet to the fire on issues and pretending that the DNC Pravda mess media would eventually turn around and be fair with them. Look at the times when Ronald Reagan called Carter and then Mondale on their BS as well as when he handed liberal media heads their asses on a plate!

Ex-PH2

I understand your concerns, but it’s one thing to be nice.

It’s another thing to be a doormat.

It needs to be addressed, period.

Graybeard

I can see two sides – pushing the NATO folks to ante up more of the financial burden for NATO, and yet protecting our allies there.

I’ve read accounts where the NATO boots-on-the-ground were thought pretty darn good by the guys outside the wire, but the politicos – much like our current clown-in-chief – need a wake-up.

With the shooting going on as we type, I wonder if Merkle will admit her blunder?

LC

I think we absolutely need to crack down on allies that aren’t pulling their weight, both financially and with operational commitments.

I just feel that suggesting our support of an ally is questionable isn’t the way to go about it. If we want to, behind closed doors, insist that ‘allies’ not living up to the treaty are kicked out, I’d be fine with that.

As for the shooting, it’s still unclear what the details are – rumors keep bouncing between it being 1 person or 3 people, and whether it’s right-wing German sorts or Muslim immigrants. They already had an issue earlier this week with a Moroccan man, though, I believe.

However, as lovely as those coconuts were, they were also quite sinister.

Frankie Cee "In the clear"

As some of you may know, a few months ago, in buying a $20.00 raffle ticket to support the “Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team”, I won an awesome AR-15. This sucker is sweet, floating barrel, full length Keymod fore piece, chambered in .223 Wylde,(enabling better use of both Remington .223 and 5.56 NATO, and entirely American Made by Bear Creek Arsenal in Sanford, North Carolina. As if that was not good enough, I caught a “one time only” Manager’s offer at a major sporting goods store, to buy ammo for 50% off. I bought 200 rounds of .223 and 350 rounds of .22LR for $50 bucks.

13717423_10207058769562775_566658022224243724_o
This week, an Army Ranger friend who is deploying to Italy, had sold his AR and offered me all his “pieces and parts”, which included a couple hundred rounds of 5.56, seven Iraq and Afghanistan tested magazines, (all had held ammo that killed bad guys), a sling, a fore grip, and a bad azz LED light with an IR lens attached. All together, worth around $500 new value. Life is good.
Daily proficiency shooting has me putting 30 rounds into a 6 inch target, from 75 yards at a kneel, using a 3X scope setting.

B Woodman

I am officially turning camo green with jealousy.

And, B Woodman, my AR-15 ASSAULT RIFLE isn’t as scary as those black ones. Mine has the upper and lower receivers and the fore piece Cerakoted in “Burnt Bronze”. I love my mission of supporting the Army Ranger Instructors of the Florida Phase of Ranger School here at Camp Rudder. I usually leave there thinking that I got more than I gave. A Proud Infidel®™

Just FTR, the “AR” in “AR15” stands for “Armalite Rifle”, it was design number 15 in 1957 if I’m correct about the year, that’s were the name came from. It became the M16, then M16A1, then the A2 and so on and now the M4 Carbine version is the one mainly in use in the Army.

Yesterday, SFC D asked what the minimum age is to join the old-age club. Putting aside that crapola (one p or two?) about how young one feels, old is a relative term and the younger one is, the smaller the number that he assigns to old. Ask a teenager when old age begins and the answer is likely to be 50. Ask a 35-year-old and the answer is apt to be 60. Surveys done from time to time indicate that assignment date for “old” is increasing. So, what’s the TAH year for old, as in old timer, old bastard, old geezer, old fart, and older than dirt? I know that falls somewhere between the first time a civilian called you sir or ma’am and the first time you were offered a senior citizen discount for which, by age, you did not qualify. But I don’t know the number.

As a 1940 model, relatively healthy, and very active, I would agree that that the “old” gateway is being pushed further back. The other day, I was talking to a W-2 Army aviator and mentioned that I had crewed the HUEY “A” model that used to be on a pedestal in front of 101st Division HQ. He said that makes me an official “Old Guy”, or “OG”.

WARNING TO THE SQUEAMISH. The link (or, if it works, the video arrow) below will take you to an UNCENSORED video of a deranged SOB on a city bus in OK who is ultimately shot and killed by a police officer. The event occurred on 24 June. If ever you want to see how not to approach a suspect in an enclosed area where you cannot see him and his hands at all times, this is it. If ever you wanted to see how hesitation can kill a police officer—but didn’t, thank goodness, in this instance—this is it. This video will be around a long time in police training academies the land over. I hope that the first officer (a/k/a Screechy Fat Ass) either finds another line of work or, if not, is required to undergo about 40 hours of re-training. In a bad situation, she made it worse, failed, and was very nearly another sad and ugly statistic.

On the other hand, kudos to both the bus driver for getting the passengers off and to the second officer (LEO Balls) for winning the fight with no chance of a rematch. Take note of what the rescuing officer is doing with his left hand while he shoots with his right!

OC

I watched that last week 2/17 and I thought “didn’t that twit have ANY fucking training before they put her on the street”?
I’ve never been LE, but I swear I wouldn’t have made the mistakes that she did.

The guy who has assumed room temperature is Miguel Chavez. Not surprisingly, his widow says he did not deserve to die. I see lawsuits against the PD, the cops individually, probably the bus company and driver, etc. They wouldn’t want me on that jury.
When asked why he had to shoot the guy seven times, the cop reportedly replied ‘That’s all the bullets I had’. /sarc Oh, and the Mexican government has weighed in, wanting to know how this could have happened. Maybe they should just watch the video. Worked for me.

Here’s a link to the grieving widow’s defense of the dead guy.

That is funny. The f’n Mexican gov’t chimed in? And “partner” said he didn’t deserve to die and wants justice. Hell, he got justice. What he didn’t get is mercy. It just wasn’t available under the circumstances.

Maybe ‘promote’ her to the 911 call center. No, that wouldn’t work. She would freak under the pressure. Well, I’m sure she will be promoted up the chain to some position in which she can do the least damage. This is the Peter Principle in living color.

Man, I’d hate to be in his position, a BG you’ve got to take out now and a Blue Falcon you have to control simultaneously? crud!

I think I know how this will play out. Both will receive commendations for heroism. The real hero, the one with massive stones, will scratch his head and wonder WTH is going on. She’s going to be promoted to a position in which she can do the least damage to herself, the public and her fellow LEOs. Maybe she can be a spokeswoman for the PD. That seems safe enough. She does not belong on the street. The other cop? One bad dude.

I counted 7 shots by the officer with Big Balls and the last 3 were for sure, positive, in the melon hits. He was in total control and kept his cool, got control of HER weapon from the dipshit and used his to clean out the gene pool a bit. Must have said “Shit! Well, now. I’ve spent the entire morning at the shop getting a new radiator installed so that my car will continue to be the dream machine it was designed to be.

Thunderstorm last night lasted about 10 minutes of noise and then it settled in to rain for an hour.

For hot weather like this, watch ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ with Taylor and Newman. Really fine black & white film. And get out some of Jimmy Cagney’s stuff or some WWII black & white movies like ‘Run Silent, Run Deep’.

Supper is cold sliced ham, potato salad, sliced tomatoes and onions and bell peppers on the side. Lots of ice tea, and maybe some cold watermelon.

John Wayne. Any John Wayne movie is good to go. Add to that The Outlaw Josey Wales, Silverado, Verzacruz, The Battle for Apache Pass from the 1950s – you could get into the movies for a nickel back then, and an ice cream float was a dime.

Twist

In a dumb ass move yesterday I answered my phone without looking at who was calling. It was one of those Jamaican phone scams. Said I was the UPS monthly winner and that I “won” $850,000 and a new car. Asked where I was because they wanted to bring it over. At this point I’m thinking that someone is trying to find out if I was home so they could rob me. At this point it dawns on me how would some random burglar know my cell phone number. I ask them if they know my address and they hung up on me. 15 minutes later my wife texts me telling me that someone called and tried to scam her. It was the exact same scam. The only difference in the details is that they claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House. The last four of my phone number is XXX1 and my wife’s is XXX2 so it’s pretty easy to figure out how they are choosing their victims.

I forgot to mention that the brand new car I “won” was a kind that they don’t make anymore.

Oh, you haven’t had the IRS phishing scam yet? I’ll give you the number to report to the real IRS, if you want it.

HMC Ret

I posted last month about several (4-6) messages on our answering machine within a period of a few hours. We screen all calls with the machine. They left repeated messages, in a computer generated but obviously foreign voice claiming to be from the ‘Law Enforcement Bureau of the IRS Criminal Enforcement Division’ or some such crap. We were told our home and our movements were being observed at all times and I must call a number (don’t have it now) and cough up some bucks or we would be arrested that very day. Had it been a toll-free number, I would have taken a folding chair to a convenience store with an outside pay phone, sit there all day and call them repeatedly to jam their lines. Wouldn’t call from my line. These scum prey mostly on the elderly, believing them to be trusting and easily manipulated. I turned the number over to the proper people. I’m sure it’s now been changed and the scam continues. Pure trash …

A weather tidbit for those who wonder how we who live along the Florida Coast survive “All Those Hurricanes”.:
No hurricanes or tropical storms have entered or developed in the Gulf of Mexico since September 2013, a stretch of well over 1,000 days. By the end of next week, the streak could be the longest on record, dating back to the 1800s.
The last hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico was Hurricane Ingrid, which made landfall in northeast Mexico in September 2013.
