Weekend Open Thread
Black and Blue
The first light of sunrise glints on a glassy chunk of ice, which has come to rest on a beach in Iceland. The dense, black beach sand is made of basalt, a rock found in regions of volcanic activity. The chunks of ice are likely fragments of a nearby glacier.

I’ve got family visiting for the weekend, so you might not see much of me in the next few days, so enjoy your families.

First……to say Bernath pays hobos to stick it in his pooper while he works Dullasses’ balls as Psul Wickre spanks it to photos of his Mother. Allegedly.
Have a nice weekend.
Second by an eyelash!
third!
fourth?
Well, I’ll be hung. I made it into the top 5.
Here I was afraid I’d have to go back to my training class and miss out entirely.
Public bragging isn’t classy, Graybeard. Especially when it comes to “equipment size”. (smile)
As George would say, “There was shrinkage!”
If you got it, it ain’t braggin’
If you’re bothered by the truth, Hondo, drink another beer.
If you actually “got it”, there’s no need to brag. From what I’ve seen so far in life, those that make it a point to brag . . . generally have little to brag about. (smile)
Have a great weekend on the Frio, amigo.
No brag, just fact.
Dumbass. It ain’t the equipment that counts. It’s the technique.
When are you guys EVER going to learn?
Who says size and technique are mutually exclusive?
J.S. Feller
John Giduck – the turd with a face!
My weekend plans include floating the Frio with #2 son & d-in-law. Looking forward to it.
Top 10??

That’s got to be the best line of the entire page.
Bernath is so dumb, if he fell in a barrel of tits, he’d come out sucking his thumb.

YAY I LOVE YOU!!!!!!
Missed you too TC. Hope you’re well.

A great weekend to you as well VOV and all my brothers and sisters here on TAH.
*POOT!*
First fart AND still in the top twenty!!
The dregs of The Dutch Rudder Gang still work wino ballsacks behind bus stops.
Somewhat long (15 minutes) but appropriate since API started it…

Well, this is what I get for leaving the room for a few minutes.
18 and legale.
Here’s my shout-out for the week….
– Fuck Bernath and DuLlAsS – they’re working “it” behind the Sak-o-Suds this weekend. Danni-boi is running another one of his “specials”.
– Thomas Reister still takes it in the keister
– Grey Rather is an embarrassment to the Hospital Corps and the CPO Mess for his bullshit lies
– “Chevy” Chevalier has a phony peeHdee from a diploma mill and gives mall cops a bad name
– Dalton Coldiron is a rump riding ranger and a star at the rump riding rodeo.
– Phildo still works the two hole
– Jerry Forster still likes to show people the “disappearing salami” trick
– And a special shout-out to all the posers and Stolen Valor ballsack workers in Joizee. Here’s hoping that “DA MAN” nails you for SV and sends your ass to prison.
We miss you, Elaine Ricci… come back home to us!
A worthwhile repeat for my buddy, Colt Bulot
Bulot’s rep has taken a jolt,
for, at posing, he’s proven a dolt.
with a wife that’s a sock
he prefers pleasing big cock
having previously holstered such Colts
I feel for Colt Bulot…any man, actually, whose personal actions and fetishes allegedly led him to squatting when he pees and not needing to push when he lays down a deuce.
and then there is Adam Appel of Anchorage, Alaska who falsely claimed to have been shot by a sniper in Afghanistan. Then Adam Appel of Anchorage, Alaska falsely claimed to be an 18X. Then Adam Appel of Anchorage, Alaska allegedly stole money from his mom that was “allegedly enough” that he later had to settle in court with the Elder Fraud division of the State of Alaska. Then Adam Appel of Anchorage, Alaska started a fake charity “American search Foundation” (remnants still online as of this post) that the Attorney General of Hawaii had to issue a Cease and Desist order to get put to bed. Then Adam Appel of Anchorage, Alaska continued to be a perennial douchebag,

Coming out of the hotel this morning I saw a NY vet plate that read, “SHOT5X”.
Should I have had the Level 4 BS alarm that it generated?
My guess is yes.
Could rheoretically be legit – as I recall the accepted max number of PHs received by any individual is 8, and Ronald Howard (one who received 8) is reputed to have been wounded more times than that but to have refused PHs for some wounds he considered “too minor”.
But I’d still say the claim is doubtful.
Hondo do you mean Col Robert Howard?
While I know of several instances of Ranger and Special Forces types taking 5 or more shots at one time, (1 PHM), I really doubt they would advertise it on a license plate. I would be skeptical of that claim.
But, there is probably some Ghettonesian Gang Banger who has taken 5 for the team.
Knew several guys wounded multiple times, but not five. Never broadcasted it other than PH ribbon with devices. Same Same with awards for heroism. Real guys have been there, done that, their ribbon rack speaks for them, they don’t need to put it on a plate or mention it to others. Be nice to check out this guy.
I had some fine news this morning, so I don’t care if you are all ahead of me.
A)- I’ve lost 5 real inches off my waist and none of my raggedy, shabby-crap, ‘distressed’ jeans will stay on my somewhat closer to slender hips without the use of a belt.
Subsections to A) include:
– it’s easier to do squats now, full or demi
– I carried a 14-lb load in each hand up the steps and into the house from the car without a squeak
– yes, I did indulge in the occasional cheeseburger and fries
B)- I intend to continue in this vein, but will recoup muscle mass by doing exercises specific to my needs, and that includes using my recurve bow for back exercises
Does anyone know when the VA is going to start the flu shots yet? Are they still going to do them through Walgreen’s like they did last year, or should I just go over to the walk-in clinic at the VA?
And with all the whooping cough/measles / mumps, etc., going around, is it time to renew one’s childhood/boot camp immunizations?
Oh, yeah:
B)- I’m going to pop some popcorn, put butter and salt on it, and watch a couple movies tonight. I have ‘Wolf’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Henry V’. I also have Ian McKellen’s ‘Richard III’, and damn, but that’s a good one!
C)- Full moon tonight is the Harvest Moon.
Congrats, Ex-PH2! Keep up the good work.
Sorry, but I’m no help on the vaccinations.
On a separate topic, there’s gonna be lots of good football on TV this weekend. Any recommendations for chow during the games?
Kudos to ya, Ex.
“When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock” is the best time of the year. So, (cue the music) Shine On, Shine On, Harvest Moon.
Plus the Cubbies locked things up yesterday when that team who shall not be named, lost. No more magic numbers or a September swoon to worry about.
Details Ex-PH2 on the how to for the 5 real inches – unless it includes eating like a rabbit or not eating at all.
Anyway, congrats and I am SOOOO jealous.
No, no real deprivation. It was breakfast and dinner, with a snack at lunchtime, or a small snack plus tea with milk in it for breakfast and lunch and dinner. I spent far too many years eating a full meal at lunchtime down in the Chicago Loop, and that is what added the pounds. I’d have been better off just going for a walk with some Triscuits and cheese and ice tea. I had a gym membership, I went skating AM & PM every day, and nothing really worked until stopped having 3 squares every day, with Triscuits or fresh fruit and a small piece of cheese to make my stomach shut up.
I’m certainly not starving here. And it’s possible that making stuff from scratch instead of just opening a box or a can made a difference, too. I do know that it was not quick and I didn’t really notice anything until December last year when my jeans were far too large at the waist.
I’ve been shrinking myself. Riding the bike a lot, cutting down on meal size, lots of fresh juice and smoothies. Google “fat sick and nearly dead”, a documentary of sorts. Good job Ms.EX….steady as she goes!
Okay, I’ll do a Basic Rules for Football Food comment. (See below.)
And thank you both for your kindness.
Good for you, Ex-PH2! Keep it up!
You’ll have to post a “pin-up” here on TAH! 😉
I’m 68, and started back in again earlier this year on a circuit I set up in the basement. Do a lot of strange things with weights, crunches, stat. bike for 1 1/4 hrs. and then do 3 1/2 mile fast walk around the “block” ( down two township roads & two county roads) out here in the country.
Yesterday I started building a fieldstone fence by the deck near my raised vegie gardens. Went out to the fence-lines and picked the stones then stacked & mortared them. Not even stiff today (okay, okay…insert smartass joke here).
I contacted the VA CBOC that has my primary care doctor and asked that question. For my area, it’s sometime in October. For our area, it has been walk-in to a VA location. That’s the plan for this year.
Oh, yeah, Daniel Bernath is a disbarred lawyer that never was a Chief Petty Officer of any kind. Joseph Stetson (Phony Special Forces) and Thomas Reister (Phony War Veteran) are not going to kick anybody’s ass here. Dennis Howard Chevalier/Dennis H. Chevalier doesn’t have a doctorate degree, isn’t in the Texas State Guard anymore, is not a military veteran, is not a war veteran, and isn’t a disabled service member.
I will keep checking in my area. If they don’t offer it at Walgreen’s I’ll just go over to the VA facility.
Flu season is Oct-May every year…so that’s generally the time to look for the immunizations
Thank you!
Over to VA two weeks ago and was offered the vaccine. I declined. Waiting until mid-October. Nurse at my VA walks around with vials, needles, etc., offering shots. Publix mailed the Russian and I a preprinted form with all PII, to take with us when we go for the vaccine. Just needs a signature and update on any allergies, etc. We will get ours from whoever first offers in October.
Good news on your weight loss, PH2. Good for you, girl.
Congratulations Ex-, good for you. I started the “MOVE” program with my local VA. In 3 weeks I’ve already lost 8 pounds mostly by just changing up my diet a bit, I eat 4 times a day now too. They’re really big on sodium content.
Keep it up, but not for too long of course.
Sodium = definitely one thing I’ve watched like a hawk. Using Mrs. Dash (comes in a lot of flavors) has made a difference. I was truly surprised at how much salt is in food when I started checking that. It was appalling.
Sane thing with sugar. Really being careful about that. Why on earth would anyone put sugar in canned tomatoes? That is just stupendously stupid.
Yeah I was never really paying attention to salt, until this new guy who runs the group talked about it. I became ultra paranoid about salt the last time I food shopped.
What I found, there is more sodium in sliced turkey lunch meat than in Tostitos chips. 450mg vs 180 mg. Yeah and that’s the “healthy choice” version. I’ve looked at how much sodium is in some pastas and I almost cried. Not only high calories but thousands of mg of sodium. I’m surrounded by Italian restaurants and they’re all huge salt pillars I have to cry over.
Though, I told him flat out, I’m not giving up Pepsi. I account for it, but it is my one comfort food and I’m keeping it. “Well, we’ll talk about that.” Yep, good luck.
What you can do to make pasta sauce (lots of Vit C from tomatoes!) is get fresh tomatoes, blanch them to make them easier to peel, and then cook them down with a minimum amount of sauce. You can also buzz them into a pulp in the food processor and then cook that slowly, adding the seasonings you like. I found Mrs. Dash to be very helpful, along with dried cooking herbs of various kinds. I will not give up garlic salt, however, but I do add some powdered garlic to it.
You can buy low-sodium products like cooking broth or stock, or make it yourself if you have the time, and freeze it for later use.
What I found in avoiding adding salt to stuff like bell peppers is that the natural sugar in them is a better flavor than salt.
Smucker’s has a natural peanut butter with a very low sodium content, or with zero salt, and there is another brand that is zero salt. Peanuts without salt have a faintly sweet flavor to them.
I’ve spent my fair amount of time in kitchens (outside of the service), and it’s important to recognize the difference between sea/kosher/rock salt and the basic iodized stuff. The real stuff still contains all of the trace minerals that most Americans do not get, while the basic crap is stripped of it all. If you really want to salt something, use the sea/kosher/rock stuff (ideally during your prep before cooking – it enhances flavor instead of just covering it). Adding it to fresh or dried herbs is also a good way to replace expensive spice mixes.
There are a lot of ways to remove processed/added sugar from foods, like slightly caramelizing sweeter veggies (i.e. peppers) before adding them to sauces, but the best approach is to just taste the food without the added sugar until your tastebuds reaclimate to the taste of real food – you’ll be amazed at what you’ve been missing all these years.
Flu shots? Have you ever read the full page(s) on the merits and risks of the “flu shot”? I have, and the risks far outweigh the merits, especially for those over 60 years old. I had a flu shot in the 1980s, and have never been sicker in my life. Never again, whether or not that episode was a result of that particular shot. I read every word on every insert in every medication that I do, whether prescription or over the counter, private pharmacies or VA provided. Drugs are scary.
It is common to get the “false flu” after getting a flu shot. You get the symptoms of it because your body is thinking it has a flu.
At the same time, you can still get the flu even if you have a flu shot because if “the they” guess the wrong strains for the year, it is useless. I got the real flu one year because they screwed up and guessed wrong. I’ve gotten the false flu at least 8 or 9 times from the shot in over 20 years of Army time getting it annually.
Granted, a friend of mine was married to a respiratory therapist who told him “don’t ever get the spray mist option”. Didn’t have to explain why to me. So, I always get the shot.
Amen.
My pharmacy tech bride won’t let me get one…or maybe she want’s me to croak?
Thank you, all of you.
It wasn’t meant as bragging, just as a means of saying that it can be done if you do not expect instant results, and you are persistent.
And never, ever deprive yourself of the occasional treat. I like cheesecake, but I don’t have it every day. It’s more of a treat if it’s once a week, with a good book and a cup of hot tea.
You will always be my favorite WAVE, regardless of how large or small the swell.
I just put scalloped potatoes in the oven. Fried Chicken and slaw in the works.
Rock the boat, but don’t tip the boat over…
Dave: I would really like a good slaw recipe. Really
You are such a guy, Dave Hardin!
Congratulations!
Thank you! I hope other people will do something similar for themselves and flaunt their senior fitness at younger generations for a very long time.
I’ve been lurking TAH way back before the page changed to what it is now, and just in time for Burntnuts to show his stupidity. I also remember your picture in the gallery. WOW! I bet you’re just as beautiful now as then.
Way to go m’lady!!!!!! Congratulations indeed!
Thanks, Sparks! I’m sticking with it.
Just when kids can tick you off, they go and do this.

Oh yeah, click on the video.
I’m here because Major Commissar’s credibility contacted me. I see that Major Commissar’s credibility’s face attacked you folk’s credibility’s fists. I’ve got my healing work cut out for me.
HAH! Fuck that guy.
He’s a dumbass…
Did you kiss his boo boo?
Oh well, he can call for a *WAAAAAHHHHH*mbulance all by himself if he’s the big boy he claims himself to be.
38th!
Parallel???
Challenge complete!
Ah, but have you been NORTH of that particular line on the map?
Don’t laugh. It’s possible in Korea – and doesn’t involve being a Korean War vet.
I grew up North of the 38th Parallel! But uuuhhhm yeah, I did so while in North America.
Basic Rules for Football Food: All food must be in mass quantities. All food MUST taste good. All food MUST be accompanied by beverages suitable for all ages, including those still crawling on the floor. Use disposable plates, utensils, drinking vessels, wipes, and lots of paper towels. Cover the sofa and chairs with a few yards of Polar fleece. It’s washable, and almost impervious to bullets. You can get it at a fabric store. Some of it comes with team logos on it. The FLOOR MUST BE CLEAN. (Kids eat junk off the floor.) A contractor’s trash bag is appropriate for disposing of boxes, bags, bottles, cartons, and crumpled paper stuff. Football Food: Pizza. Take & Bake is fine. Add extra cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms (canned cook faster) chopped onions, etc., but heap it on. Remember, anything you don’t eat up can be wrapped and frozen for later use. Lasagna. No-boil lasagne noodles are available now. I use them a lot. Use your favorite pasta sauce, lots of cheese, lots of veg/meat/cheese for the layers. Use the big pans to make this. Mac & cheese. Make it with ham, beef & tomatoes, hot dog slices – whatever! And remember, not everyone likes onion the way you do. If you’re going to do dogs, Polish, brats, or sausages, get the bulk packs, not the 8-per pack. You’ll save some money. And here’s a golden opportunity to experiment with condiments, too. Ditto burgers: get the bulk packs of sliced cheese and the bulk packs of ground beef and buns. Tacos and fajitas – some people like to take the fixin’s and make their own. Chili’s good, too. ChiliMan chili is okay as is Hormel, and there’s also home made the night before. Have shredded cheese and chopped onions standing by. Oh, lest I forget: It’s a good idea to put out a big pan of green salad with various veggies added because people do like that. And bottled dressings are fine. The wimmins will like you better for it. Popcorn made fresh. Put it in a big dishpan with a scoop, and provide… Read more »
Outstanding!
With the sound of all that food, even I’d be eating it off the floor.
I found two recipes for lasagna that tell you to replace the starchy noodles with eggplant or with zucchini.
You just cut the vegs into strips and do the layers the same as you do with the pasta. Cook it the same way, too.
You might be able to get your kids to eat zucchini that way.
“Did I miss anything?”
YES, how about my Friday sammich?
Got some weed & feed today at HD. It was on sale and got 10% military discount. Got a bale of pine needles and talked the lady into giving me another bale that had broken into many pieces and could not be sold.
Score!!
Then to Wendy’s and The Russian immigrant ‘allowed’ me to get their new $5 meal: chicken sandwich, fries and beverage. We don’t usually do fast food because, according to the food Nazi, ‘It isn’t good for you.’ BTW, the food Nazi ate all the fries, you know, the ones that aren’t good for ME but apparently are good for HER. So, today we splurged and the sammich was really good. But, alas, no sammich from PH2. Sadness…
So, all considered, a great day. Watching my Alabama behind to Ole Miss, 24-17 at halftime. But … I watched Louisville put a whoopin’ on Florida State, 63-20. Life is good. Unless Alabama loses. Ah, hell, it’s still good.
Fries are potatoes. Potatoes are a wonderful source of Vitamin C. Tell the migrant to get her own fries because you need the Vitamin C for yourself.
Also, I went to McD’s and got a double quarter cheese with extra pickles for supper, because I did not feel like cooking tonight. It was juicy, prime, tasty, and dripped flavor all over my hands.
Oh, geez, a double quarter with cheese. There is a God.
Yeah, the migrant schools me about what to eat, then crooks my stuff. Last week made a grilled cheese, for myself, after she said she didn’t want one. Yeah, she ate it.
Grilled Cheese: Good white bread with thin slices of cheese on each piece of bread. In between, I put sliced dill pickles. Now the pickles must have the juices squeezed out or you end with a soup sandwich. Can also use round sweet pickles, but I prefer dill. BTW, instead of butter on the bread, try a thin coating of mayo. Yep, it really tastes better than butter.
Mayo, check.
Texas toast, check.
White cheddar cheese, two slices, check.
Dill pickles, check.
Omigod! Grilled cheese! I use 12-grain wide pan bread. I put the mayo on in the inside and outside. On the inside, it holds the shredded cheese in place. Only the sharpest, snappiest cheeses will do, like Asiago or a really sharp Spaniard, which is hard to get. If I want ham with it, I buzz it up in the food processor.
Only a cast iron skillet will do. And you only need to turn the sammich ONCE.
Pickles go on the side, with potato chips. Barbecue or cracked pepper and sea salt.
About a month and a half into having a pacemaker device, I wonder now, why I didn’t get it a couple of years ago. Few to no negatives, and too many positives to list. Among them, being able to blow the center out of a 6 inch target from 75 yards with my .22 L.R. Henry carbine:
https://www.henryrifles.com/rifles/lever-action-22-carbine-rifle/, using a $20.00 Bushnell scope, and keeping the 13 round group within 3 inches. Pretty damned good for a guy who is a bunch of years older than a worn out, dis-barred attorney.
Next week I will have a Heart Catheterization procedure to see if I need to have one or more stents inserted.
FYI: “Heart Catheterization” is nothing like a piss poor navy photographer would shove up his dick, past his prostate, into his bladder. Nothing like that filthy mess.
I’ll be thinking of you and here’s wishing you a speedy recovery, Frankie.
Thanks, Brother.
Wishing you well Frankie. If you have the cath at the same place you got your pacemaker, my RN daughter might very well be taking care of you.
I told her to be on the lookout for a grungy old salt getting a pacemaker, but she didn’t run across you last month.
Blessings and get vertical soon, Brother.
Glad to hear you’re doing better, Frankie! I hope things continue to improve.
I checked the All Points Logistics website this afternoon, and yet again, they failed to post Phil’s schedule. Does anyone know whether will be working balls this weekend?
O Elaine Ricci, where art thou?

Talk about being late to the party
I’m present and accounted for all be it late
57rd!
Suckas!
Hey, just got back from Fort Myers!
All I can say is (and this has been cleared by the legal department and public affairs officials at the TAH World HQ Command and Staff Combined Joint Operations Center):
HOLY CRAP!
That is all.
MCPO, I bought popcorn on your advice last week. It is getting stale. Shall I toss it and wait for a better time to replace it, or may it need to be served soon?
Keep it at the ready.
Popcorn is generally good for 2 to 3 weeks.
It is cheap too, so if we need to adjust popcorn and beer consumption time frames, it is all good.
In the end, we all know how this is going to end … in the end.
NOTE: For all TAH Code Talkers, the word “end” appears 3 times in previous sentence. Use DELTA ALPHA BRAVO code with indicator for full future AAR.
Roger.
ZBK1 Master Blaster. QRE?
This is better than TV!
I have plenty of popcorn in the cupboard, butter in the freezer. The only thing I don’t have is a good diet soda, but I’ll get a small case of it.
May one assume “dis goan’ be goood”?
By ‘good’, I mean even gooder than anything else, ever?
Popcorn?
Check.
Beer?
Check.
Pretzels
Check.

Bourbon?

Can’t wait!
I guess I’m 58th then – reminds me of my older sister’s 58 Chevy Impala from back inthe day. Gold with baby moon hubcaps.
My 3th car was a 1966 Impala, light grayish blue, 4 door, 3 on the column, 8 cylinder, 6 person trunk, chick magnetizing street machine.
I kept the hub caps.
Was it a 283 or 327? As I recall, power steering was not standard equipment but they still weren’t too hard to steer.
I had ’68 LeMans with regular steering, my recollection is that it was 305 engine with a 2 BBL carburetor and automatic. The father-in-law had the same car with a straight six and three on the column that was much easier to steer and had plenty of power.
All it really needed was a Hurst shifter and three two BBL carbs to make it seem more like a GTO… which, in 1966, was a handful of excitement.
Pontiac Tempests of that era used either a 326 cubic-inch V-8, or an overhead cam 215 CI inline 6. GTOs used a 389. The OHC 6, so it was said, could be fairly quick because of the torque curve at the low end of the RPM scale. Another interesting Tempest engine from those days was that prior to ’64, they used an all-aluminum 215 CI V-8 that only weighed about 300 pounds. The aluminum block eventually made its way across the pond into Rover sedans, and later into the Triumph TR-8 sports car.
First car was 1964 Buick Skylark, with aftermarket Sparkomatic FM Converter.
My current chariot needs a new exhaust. Right now, it sounds distinctly like a 1957 Chevy Bel Air with glass packs in the muffler. If you know what I’m talking about, the car also had a two-tone paint job, white over blue or red, and a spinner on the steering wheel for date nights, and maybe, just maybe a shift stick.
Someone up the street has a dark blue 1967 Mustang with chrome hubcaps. Too cool for school!
My favorite car growing up was Sis’s (and hubby at the time) purple 57 Chevy with the black Cragar 5 spokes. As I grew older, the 58 grew on me. They had a 59 red Impala as well. A tank that could rocket.
My dad got talked into buying a 1961 white over red Chevy Impala. It had a V-8 engine, an AM/FM radio, chrome wire wheels, and got about 4 gallons to the mile. Gas, on the other hand, cost $.259/gal for regular and $.329 for premium. Definitely a gas hog.
Must have been something wrong with that one, Ex-PH2. Folks owned a ’64 Impala w/4-bbl 327 and auto trans. It would absolutely scream – but would also get high teens MPG (17 to 18 range) on the highway at at about 60. It also wasn’t too bad around town.
Goose it hard enough to open up all 4 barrels on the carb, though, and it didn’t do so well MPG-wise. (smile)
Well, in retrospect, it should have been fueled with premium, but my father, who knew nothing about cars EVER, bought regular, which meant that the engine was likely not operating at its best level of performance.
First was 61 Buick Electra. Came home from boot, it was gone. Springs exposed in seats. Man, it would move.
Second was 66 Rambler Ambassador. I really miss the Rambler.
Present. All quiet on the Naco front!

Any of you miscreants participate in any air combat Sim games? Back around y2k I used to enjoy Aces High. Haven’t messed with it much since, and that game ceased to exist. What are all the cool kids doing now? Is War Thunder worth downloading? Interested in hearing your advice. Thanks.
I’m a World of Tanks Guy myself. I hear a lot of people go over and play WT, some stay some come back. I have way too much time in WOT to jump to WT now.
Its probably one of the most complex tank games ever made.
For anyone that likes WWII sea warfare, Atlantic Fleet is out there for both the PC and Mac and it is really good (I play it on my iPad mini). Check it out…
Seriously, are real badass. If you have a few minutes try to imagine what this guy did.
https://www.warhistoryonline.com/korean-war/badly-wounded-marine-used-his-spade-to-knock-grenades-back-at-the_enemy.html
Son of a bitch! Wow!
If that account were in a book of fiction, readers would say, “Oh bullshit. At least make it sound plausible!” But it’s true, supported by the Medal of Honor citation and all which that honor requires in terms of credible, supportive evidence. What’s more, despite some 100 enemy bodies being found in the immediate vicinity of Hector Cafferata’s fighting positions, the official count was reduced to 15 for fear that no one would believe what he did. And why he did what he did he explained in a 2001 newspaper article: “I did my duty. I protected my fellow Marines. They protected me. And I’m prouder of that than the fact that the government decided to give me the Medal of Honor.” Amazing. “Batter up!”
I am humbled by men and women such as this.
And every day we encounter posers who would steal honor from these men and women.
Today, Friday 16 September 2016, is National POW-MIA Recognition Day. Tomorrow, Saturday 17 September 2016, is the 229th birthday of our divinely inspired Constitution of the United States of America. The evening of Sunday 02 October 2016 to the evening of Tuesday 04 October 2016, is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. On Wednesday 12 October 2016, I will undergo surgery on my spine at the University of Utah Medical Center, performed by Dr. Brandon Douglas Lawrence, of the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center, all paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs. What makes that particular day even more interesting is that, Wednesday 12 October 2016, is Columbus Day (traditional), and Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, and therefore, the holiest day of the year. Nifty stuff, huh? Also, the Department of Veterans Affairs is issuing me a powered mobility scooter, and also installing a lift on my pickup truck, so I can take the scooter with me when I travel. I haven’t got it yet. Physical Therapy said it would take about a month to deliver it. Thanks to the Department of Veterans Affairs, a Community Health Nurse visits me every Thursday to supervise my medication, and a Certified Nursing Assistant comes every Tuesday and Friday to clean up my apartment and do my laundry. I sure am glad I was privileged to serve in the United States Army, so I can have these benefits. And just think – – – – , Because of all those years locked up with convicted criminals in a state mental institution, I almost couldn’t get in the Service at all! That’s why today, I feel sorry for guys who are physically or psychologically unable to go into the Service. Actually, if you can believe it, I even feel pity for the draft dodgers, because now, in their old age, they must look back with regret, and question their own manhood. How does somebody like that explain to their children and grandchildren why they refused to answer the call to duty at the moment their country needed them most? Some Social… Read more »
Hang in there, John Mallernee!
John………your statement about draft dodgers hits home. Back in the day I was a junior in college, playing baseball, having the time of my life. Then my draft notice comes, I did not want to go. Thought of taking meds to get my heart rate up ect. My father, somehow heard about my thoughts, and told me I would regret it the rest of my life! He was right.
Coming full circle, I’m in my university’s hall of fame for baseball, which is great. However, I’m much more proud of my service in Vietnam than any award I recieved for being a baseball player!
Hey 3/17. See the quote from Marine Hector Cafferata 7:59 a.m. 9/17 under my tag. You are in good company with that sentiment.
On the Draft dodger thing.
My former father in law wasn’t a dodger but once drafted in 1944, he said he did everything he could to get tossed out during Basic Training: eating coffee grounds to get sick, picking fights, dressing as Klinger before there was one. No luck.
Made him a cook and got sent to Europe. Early 1945 an MP unit needed extra guards to help take EPWs to the rear. His unit cheerfully volunteered him.
When the war ended he was still attached to the MP unit and went back to the States with them, where he eventually was able to get out of the Army – 29 years later as a Senior MP NCO…
John,
You owe me a rendition of ” The Parting Glass” still. Looking forward to hearing it,

Whether I use the embedding code or the URL, I can’t make it work.
No, the video is NOT of me singing.
It’s the University College of Dublin Chorus.
If I ever regain my health, I’ll learn the song and record it, but even then, how would I share it, since nothing I try seems to work?
Post it on you tube, I can find it.
And its not If you get better. Its when.
🙂
Hoping things get better for you soon, John…
Wishing you the very best, Brother.
Concerning bumper stickers, I poster before that my ‘Hillary For Prison 2016’ stickers keep being defaced. I just replace them. Liberals are soooo tolerant.
@ HMC RET :
These aren’t bumper stickers.
They’re actually flags, mounted on plastic flagstaffs, that mount on the top of the rolled up window, so that the flag flies above the roof of the vehicle.
The unknown Social Justice Warrior(s) vandalize(s) my pickup truck by snapping off the plastic flagstaff, so that the flag can’t be remounted.
Thus, to replace the flag, I had to purchase a whole new flag and flagstaff assembly.
Fortunately, the vandal(s) only broke the flagstaff, and not the window glass.
My apartment is located on the side of the building opposite the parking lot, so I’m unable to observe my pickup truck, and because of my failing health, I rarely ever leave my apartment.
And this just in :
Chicago Cubs have won their division title!
Yeah baby!
THIS is the year.
When does it start snowing in HELL?
Just about any time it freezes and snows in Michigan:

Go Cubbies! Steve Gibson is smiling from up above, and hopefully pulling a few strings.
Sincere congrats…from a Rangers fan
You mean Steve Goodman, right?
DamMitchel! Yes, Steve Goodman. Dammit!
F’n phone…I give up
Indeed, Ex! I am convinced that this is, indeed, our year! (I pray it is, anyway.)
In that vein, let me toss in a very touching story from my weekly Trivia game last night.
First, to set the scene: My car license plate reads CUBSFAN and I fly a “W” flag from the antenna.
Now, as I enter the restaurant where we play Trivia, I’m wearing one of my eight Cubs jerseys and a Cubs cap. I’m going around to all the tables greeting my friends, when an elderly lady at one table sees me and beckons me over.
She grabs my hand and says, “I saw your car outside.” (At first I can’t figure out how she knows it’s my car, then I remember what I am wearing, etc.) She begins to tear up as she tells me that her husband had been a Cub fan all of his life … and he passed away last November, and she was very sad that he has missed this magnificent season we’re having.
A bit of dust got into my eyes right about then, but I squeezed her hand and said, “Ma’am, he isn’t missing anything. He has the best seats in the house.”
She thanked me and I went to my team’s table.
By the way … my team won the Trivia night.
Cubs fans are everywhere.
Cool! Good story.
Not fucking first.
Cocksuckers.
94th and so tired my ass is still in the other room.
Homework is more betterer with whizzzkey…it’s a fact.
Wrote some of my better papers for my MBA with a couple of “adult beverages” onboard.
Ah, but when whiskey IS your homework, that’s even better.
PLEASE be careful of what you say about Whiskey, IT’S NOT JUST FOR BREAKFAST ANYMORE!!!
I’m probably tripping a claymore here but, hell, I’m a geezer and have a license to say what I want.
Reading former SECDEF Robert Gates book “Duty”. I always had a good vibe about Mr Gates from what I read before thus why I got it in the library. I’m liking the book. Interesting since he was SECDEF for both W and Asshole. He is complimentary of both W, Asshole, and Cankles. Gates has a lot of experience with many administrations so it is food for thought. His words on visiting wounded and efforts to get MRAPs is interesting and moving.
Let the ridicule begin. But, first, hit Jonn’s “DONATE” button at the top of the page or I won’t give a shit what you say.
This is for API, from a financial newsletter I get: Right after Mercury began its retrograde motion on August 30, the solar eclipse occurred on September 1. This eclipse was extremely powerful, for it was in opposition to Neptune and square to Saturn. The Saturn/Neptune square finally ended on September 10, but the eclipse cycle remained in force until the full moon, lunar eclipse, of Friday, September 16. The lunar eclipse – full moon in Pisces – is always considered a “crazy time” by astrologers. This was no exception, and it was exaggerated by the presence of Venus in opposition to Pluto and square to Uranus, September 11-18. Nothing is quite “normal” when Uranus is in the mix. Add a lunar eclipse in Pisces, and Mercury retrograde, and presto! – you get a presidential-looking, on-message, Donald Trump, and a pneumonia-ridden Hillary Clinton who lambasts half of Donald Trump supporters as “The Deplorables” – and the Trump supporters embraced the insult! The Adorable Deplorables! Everything backfires with Mercury retrograde and Uranus highlighted as part of T-square. Nothing is as it seemed. On top of that, many planets are entering new signs. Jupiter has begun a new 13-month trek through Libra as of September 9. The Sun will join Jupiter in Libra for one month, starting on September 22, the same day Mercury turns direct. Venus leaves Libra, its ruling sign, and begins a 25-day jaunt through Scorpio on September 23. Mars leaves Sagittarius on September 27, to begin a 6-week journey through Capricorn, where it is in its exaltation, ending the day after the USA election. Everything is changing, and so are people’s attitudes. The bottom line for Financial Astrologers is that this is the beginning of many new cosmic cycles. Don’t be surprised if it is also the beginning of a new direction in financial, economic, and banking policies. Don’t be surprised if it starts a major pendulum shift in politics too. It is like the fog will begins to lift, and the surreal world around us will start to become real again. Financial markets will likely begin to move… Read more »
LAST! And here’s to you, Ex-PH2 for your Astro-forecast:
Damn, Ace has a 3 flaming skull post on the Hillary birther thingy. Has Ace ever done 3 skulls before?
I saw that… haven’t seen a one skull post over there in a while.

On Friday, in Baltimore, a 64-year old man was reading a book as he sat on a bench in a park near Johns Hopkins University when at least three people walked up to him. One put a gun to his head, another maced him and then stabbed him in the back and arm, and a third captured it all in a FB live stream. The thugs took his phone and some money and departed. Police who soon arrested two of the pukes (Zannay Laws and Dakei Perry, both 18) thanked them for the video. They are suspected of committing other street robberies, including one of a pizza delivery lady who was choked out in the robbery. No word on whether Zannay and Dakei (where do they get these f’n names, anyway?) are members or supporters of the BlackLivesMatter movement.
Thank goodness you can’t get a gun in Baltimore. One or more of those poor young men might have been hurt…
Au contraire, nbc. Guns are common and cheaply had in Ballymore. Just not for law abiding citizens.
In the short thread (Wolfe), HMC Ret reminds us that the Constitution was signed on this date in 1787. For that reminder, I thank him for I had no idea of this date’s significance in our history. I usually think of the Constitution’s ratification in 1789 and of that difficult process that included the promise of certain individual protections FROM the federal government in order for ratification to occur. It makes me wonder just how, with such a marvelous design, the country has gotten so screwed up. The Founding Fathers wouldn’t recognize the federal and state governments today. In fact, they might ask what the hell became of federalism, that silly, crazy notion of independent states with a necessary but controlled central gov’t. One part of the answer is found in a recent story out of Tennessee. A state DWI law went into effect on 1 July that both raised the penalties for persons aged 18-20 who are convicted of DWI. So? So, the law also raised the BAC for those 18-20 year olds from .02 to .08. I can well understand why that was done and take no issue with it. But here’s the thing. The feds have a zero tolerance DWI program of some sort and by raising the BAC, TN ran afoul of it. So? So, and here is how tyranny and state subservience works: the state was going to lose $60,000,000 in fed highway funding. So, guess what? Right. The governor called a special session to repeal the law and lower the BAC back to where the feds want it so the state doesn’t lose that money. And that’s one big way in which federalism is killed. Happens all the time.
Thanks for the mention, 2/17 Air Cav.
Another example is the Department of Education shoving BS learning ‘techniques’ down the collective throats of the states and withholding $ if not implemented. I don’t think the DoE has raised the mean IQ of the nation one point in its decades of existence. At the cost of how many trillions? And the list goes on as the feds hijack our liberty pretty much by threats. We know the solution but I hope it doesn’t have to come to that. I’m an old man sick of what I have seen take place.
BTW, the Eastern European and I have probably done more to help kids learn by teaching Pre-K kids to read than the DoE has ever hoped to do. Those little turds are like sponges. Get to them early and it’s possible, IMHO, to maybe, just maybe remove a kid from the hood. I sure hope so. I’ve monitored some of my kids over the years and for the most part they are doing well. The DoE and most other alphabet agencies? Mindless bureaucrats, each of whom has a dozen assistants. (Yeh, I know, maybe only three assistants each.)
Here’s a story that will brighten your day and maybe prompt a sniffle or two.
Opening day for the Nebraska Cornhuskers 2016. They’re at home against Fresno State. The stadium is packed. There’s a player missing who was expected to return to the team this year: Nebraska’s punter, Sam Foltz, jersey #27. He was killed in a car accident this past July.
Nebraska went three and out on its first possession. As the offense left the field, the punting unit came on. There were only 10 players. They lined up in punt formation without a punter. Tears flowed among players and coaches and fans. A ref threw a flag, as he was obligated to do, as the play clock expired. In a gesture of sportsmanship and understanding, Fresno State declined the penalty. And the stadium erupted.

Be humble. Be self deprecating. Nobody gets out alive.
Thanks for the link, Air Cav.
“Such is friendship, that through it we love places and seasons: for as bright bodies emit rays to a distance, and flowers drop their sweet leaves on the ground around them, so friends impart favor even to the places where they dwell.”
Army football has been for too long a patsy for FBS (formerly Div IA) teams. Teams contract years in advance to play one another and the contracts include payouts, of course. FBS teams want the all-but-automatic wins and the non-FBS teams want the dough for their schools. Things don’t always go as planned, however. Army was in Texas yesterday to play UTEP and the game looked to be very competitive. Oddsmakers had Army a slight favorite, with the over/under around 47 points. Army blasted UTEP off the field, dominating every aspect of the game. Final score: 66-14
Army is 3-0. GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!
The weekend’s almost over, I realize, but I just came across this and I really had to share:

91-year old woman fighting to keep trees planted in honor of WWI vets alive.
Read the story, farmgirl. Trees are living things and die, sooner or later. When a tree dies or needs to be uprooted, wood from the tree should be preserved and incorporated into individual markers along the blvd.
