Armed Forces Day 2020

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. Thanks to President Harry S. Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.

Armed Forces Day is a joint celebration of all six branches of the U.S. military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and the newly created Space Force. The day honors all people currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. This includes the men and women who have served or are serving in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard, including the National Guard and Reserve components.

The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard are the armed forces of the United States. The Army National Guard and the Air National Guard are reserve components of their services and operate in part under state authority.

WAR STORY ALERT: Back in the early-mid 50’s the Air Force held a huge open house at Mitchell Field in Queens, New Yawk. I looked forward to riding the city bus to Mitchel then touring the aircraft static display and all of the other stuff. It was always a well attended event and probably had a bearing on my enlisting in the Air Force. Little Rock AFB does the same thing these days.

Most appropriate for this Armed Forces Day. A regular that has been conspicuous in his absence bringing a War Story in re of Air Force Service brought about by a visit to a former enlistment camp for Army Rev War actions, named for an Army Gnrl (Winfield Scott, the renamed for another Army Commander (Black) and finally named for an Army Air Corps recruit killed in training for WWI Army Air Service. Later used to house Navy and other joint service personnel. Got lost in this linky checking for Mitchell Field. Good stuff here.

A Salute to all of our Armed Services, Past and Present, who have answered The Call. Now make sure you earmark some time Monday Week to render Honors and pay Homage to those “…who gave all.” For those of us who are traditionalists, we will also do it again on 30 May.

I usually keep track of the important days like this but it slipped by me yesterday.
Yeah, Monday is something to observe in this time of worshippin’ 3-day weekends, but besides me bein’ old school and havin’ grown up with the 30th bein’ Memorial Day, it’ll be 52 years to the day since I earned my PH. Kinda figure it’s my personal reminder of what the day’s supposed to mean.

Club Manager, Mitchel field is located in Hempstead LI. Field and flying was shut down due to public pressure after a number of crashes and a P-47 that went into one of the Hofstra University buildings. Still active things going on. We used to pick up $$$$ from the PX on the base back in the 70’s. Now it’s the Cradle of Aviation plus the Nassau County Fire Museum.

Thanks for the info. I thought Queens because we rode a bus and didn’t remember any going into Long Island. In thinking about it, the Air Force may have provided the transportation because we boarded at a central location. Regardless, those were the fun days for this inner-city kid.

Sure miss the parade that a small town not far from me has each Armed Forces Day. Been attending, and sometimes participating in, that one for decades. At a loss today.

Meanwhile, will quietly remember what the day is all about. Thanks to all still serving, in whatever capacity. It takes everyone to make the services work.

“Starfleet”

Has a better ring to it, eh?

USMC Steve

I had that thought too. I wonder if the Space Force’s officer candidates will go to “Starfleet Academy”?
