Another Icon Falls…
Many on social media are celebrating the move, criticizing the company for using the image of a Native American woman for its branding in the first place.
…To Political Correctness.
After nearly 100 years, Land O’ Lakes is dropping the native ‘Butter Maiden’ from its packaging. Caving to the PC crowd, who claim the image is racist, the new packaging will have only the lake and forest depicted, with some other logo modifications. Granted, it’s a small change, but indicative of how the endlessly outraged class is endlessly outraged, and it’s getting pretty stale.
Poetrooper sends.
Land O’ Lakes drops ‘racist’ Native American image from packaging
By Alexandra Deabler
Land O’ Lakes has an updated look for 2020. The farmer-owned dairy cooperative, which produces butter, cheese and other milk products, has dropped the Native American maiden image from its packaging, opting instead for just a landscape. The logo, which has been the company’s label for nearly 100 years since it was founded in Minnesota in 1921, has been called “racist” and criticized for its use of the “butter maiden.”

The logo, which has been the company’s label for nearly 100 years since it was founded in Minnesota in 1921, has been called “racist” and criticized for its use of the “butter maiden.”
The new label was announced in a press release from Land O’ Lakes in February, though it made no specific mention of removing the Native American image from all products.
The press release shared “the new packaging will show up in a variety of ways, including through a new front-of-package design that features the phrase ‘Farmer-Owned’ above the LAND O LAKES brandmark,” as well as include pictures of farmers and co-op members on the label.

But…but…why didn’t they just put Elizabeth Warren’s face on her?
heh heh…
I’ll say it:
Frankly, the shorline concept works far better with the brand name…
The new package also features farmers on the back…also far superior to the product IMO.
In truth, most dairy products are the products of German or Scandanavian immigrant families. Why pretend any “Indians” had anything to do with it?
Back in the 1920s/30s, American Indian graphics were on many products as the proximity to the “wilderness” era allowed for a nostalgic view of such images. Now, however, the national image of such peoples is of casinos, drunks, welfare, and protesters. Young people have been taught nothing but a post modern view of them as a non-human victim totem to be trotted out as a token the way a shaman would to ward off an evil spirit.
So I’m all for dropping all references on their packaging. But, I would also like to see an honest inclusion in our education system that definitively teaches the truth that Henry Ford exposed–
“Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the government
take care of him better take a closer look at the American Indian”
See also James Watt, Secretary of the Interior under Reagan:
“If you want an example of the failure of socialism, don’t go to Russia, come to America and go to the Indian reservations”.
Indian reservations have absolutely nothing to do with socialism. It is the systematic attempt by the majority white race to eradicate an entire race of people.
Kathryn,
I removed your full name from your comment. Please see my PSA in the Valor Vultures tab for the reason why. You’ll have to scroll down a bit to find it.
New here? Welcome. Please hit the TAH FNG tab as well.
Indian reservations are pretty much a textbook example of failed socialism. Everything is provided by the great white father, there’s zero incentive to improve oneself, and it created the stereotype. I’m not denying the white majority attempted to eradicate the native American tribes. I’m saying that the reservations system, as created, failed economically and socially.
Kathryn, I see you are familiar with what “Little Phil” Sheridan and “Cump” Sherman’s plans were for dealing with the Native Americans.
The white race didn’t do a damn thing, Kathy. Some politicians did. Were those politicians white? Yes. But hispanic politicians in Mexico have historically been nasty to Indians in Mexico as well. Did the Arab race perpetrate the 9/11 attacks? Of course not. A dozen arabs did it, not hundreds of millions of the rest of them. Was the Japanese race guilty of mass-murder, mass-rape, and slavery in Korea and China? Of course not. Japanese politicians and their military did that. Simply being racially Japanese does not make one guilty, as your bullshit statement implies.
And which “white race” are we talking about here, anyway? The white English, who drove the also-white British Celts (AKA the Welsh) out of England in antiquity and attempted genocide against the also-white Irish? The white (racially, not politically) Russians, who have a long history of racial violence against the also-white Ukrainians, Cossacks, and Turks? And shall I go into the bloody history of pre-colonial racial violence in Africa, Asia, and the Americas?
Stop being a racist.
Thanks TOW! Testify! Can’t blame the actions of a few on everybody. Many Soldiers left the Army during the “Indian Wars” time frame (1870s/80s) because they didn’t agree with Big Army’s plan. Many an Officer sacrificed their career for the same reason. At the end of the day, the slaughter of the buffalo did more to force the Natives on to the res than the military did.
Thank you for your comment, is far more intelligent and empathetic than what comes from ‘ this taking PC too far’ gang who lack understanding this issue from a historical and commercial perspective.
What issue?
Is it now prohibited to use minorities in commercial advertisement and logos?
What’s next?
All I saw was a pretty lady on a butter box. Sometimes things really are that simple.
Aw shit, I assumed gender. I’m now a misanthropic, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, patriarchal, animal rights denying ass. Wait, I can’t say ass, I may offend donkeys. It’s worse than I thought. Whatever will I do? I’m evil incarnate! Wait, incarnate infers “meat”. AAAAAAARGH!
I would understood if they were representing and area where Native Americans were before. and did it as an homage to their culture and work. Can’t hate on that. Now, if they switched her to a farmer, whose wives historically churned butter at home, then I can agree more with that. That would be like using a picture of a white man on a mexican product, or a pacific islander on something made in the North Atlantic.
First comment, Joseph? Welcome aboard. Unless you’re a long time lurker, please hit the TAH FNG tab at the top of the page.
We’re a friendly bunch. Until we’re not.
*grin*
This is taking this crap to far ,it was a beautiful logo, I probably just go to another brand, crazy
Concur. Switch to Kerrygold Irish Butter. No “offensive” logos, and a superior product, in any case.
I removed your full name as well, Betty. See my reply to Kathryn, a couple of comments up.
I’ve been buying it ever since I left home.
Never considered the taste. It was the box.
Now I will buy the local Dairy brand.
I always buy one pack of Kerry Gold and one pack of Cabot Creamery. Always support my homeland. I otherwise would buy Land O Lakes if that was the alternative if my favorites were not available. I always did like the cover picture though.
Couple years ago they changed the packaging so
you could no longer cut her knees off one panel
and tape them behind her chest on the other panel
then cut a small flap over her chest area that
can be lifted to show her bare breasts.
My mother taught me that trick.
Here it is:

Heh…
As I recall, the artist designed it on purpose that way.
His daughter commented that his art was sometimes “racy” like that.
Then I won’t tell you about some of the less than family-friendly stuff you can find on Disney products.
Like if you stand directly to the right side of the statue of Walt Disney (by Frontierland entrance) and look towards the Tomorrowland entrance, Walt is, uh, pretty “endowed”…
I remember it well. There are some brilliant minds out there.

Another classic.
Yup … remember doing that. But just taped the knees over the butter; no hide-n-seek.
Well look at that.

I just checked the Land O’ Lakes butter I bought 3 days ago and the Maiden is missing which I didn’t realize until I got on the site. This is the second change they did. The first was they covered her cleavage where it didn’t show that much and now they removed the Maiden. Why the phuk do these people listen to a small number of people and I’m one of the “Silent” majority that should speak up because we are the majority but never do because we don’t make big deals out of these things when we should and tell these companies that we do out number the minority of those shit bird whiners/complainers
I had to buy the “unsalted” stuff last week
because all the salted stuff was gone.
Same thing on the cleavage. Didn’t know
Indian girls wore a camisole.
The transgender beads are a nice touch though.
I buy unsalted all the time for a couple reasons, mostly so I can control how much salt goes into our diet.
You’ll have to keep it in the reefer; it will spoil more quickly than the salted if left out.
“spoil more quickly”
Did not know that.
I buy the “no salt added” diced tomatos
in cans for making sauce. Huge amount of
salt in canned goods.
Salt is a preservative. One stick of unsalted left out to soften won’t kill ya, just use it quickly or put it back in the chill chest.
Once again, arrogant white people getting red people out of sight and back on the reservation.
Racist f#cktards, all.
Yep
Oh come on, you know the SJW are never gonna stop.
I blame it on the owners. They are saying 100 years in the market, so the current owners are like 3rd or 4th generation, and probably substantially wealthy.
Which way do you think the swing? Left or right?
Junior went to an ivy league college and got an education, you know. And now he is the CEO.
They insist we not show Native Americans:
As productive
As powerful
As popular
As funny
As able
Only may they be shown as victims needing “help” from well-off whites. Because equal means “needs my help”.
Go f#ck a squirrel you racist f#cktards. No one named a bad-to-the-bone attack helicopter after your sorry asses.
If they did would just sit on the tarmac whining loudly.
yep…20 years from now the only “indian” a kid will be exposed to are the Nathan Phillips types….
Or the Italian guy who was in all of those pollution commercials back in the 70’s.
No actual 2nd wave Asian immigrants will be seen in our culture.
Once the “elites” have successfully erased them, they can get to work on erasing the early settlers from history, then the 18th century Germans, then the 19th century Irish and the Italians and finally focus on the only demographic that matters….Illegal aliens.
“….Illegal aliens”
Illegal conservatives will be deported.
in the fevered dreams of the self loathing white liberal, conservatives go to the gulag to make their luxury iphones.

I’m mad now! This is my brand that we have used for as long as I can remember. We used this brand not only because it was real butter, but because it HAD The Native Lass on it. I do vaguely remember my Grand Mother and Granny churning butter way back yonder, but Mama bought Land O Lakes at the Piggly Wiggly and the A&P Stores when I was growing older. My 4th GGrand Mother was full blooded Muscogee Creek, she was able to dodge the forced removal in 1838 because Grand Pappy’s place was so far back in the swamp the long knives couldn’t get to them. If these dogooder politically correct phuquingphuquersdont quitphuquinaround and want to remove something, they can remove their azzes from some Native Land and give it back to the tribes.
Y’all may remember that I made mention a while back that the Confederate Related Flags, Markers, Statues etc were just the FIRST of the low hanging fruit. It took a literal Act of Congress/SCOTUS decision to save the Peace Monument from WW1 in the PDRofMD. They are attacking the Church Flags and the US Flag. We have well and truly become the United States of teh Offended.
Thesephuqueingphuquerscankissmyphuqueingazz. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
HEY! That could be my family!! My ancestor’s uncle and family were wiped out in 1836 by some Mvskogee who were not wanting to go to “Indian Territory”; happened on the Pea River near the AL/FL border. He, his father, and brother all joined with Gen. Wellborn’s militia to give chase. The milita actually saved Melinda “Mary Hart” (per 1841 newspaper article) despite family tradition.
So, he ends up marrying a half-Creek girl from AL (her mother was born 1799 in GA).

Cousin! Could damn well be. GPappy born 1816/18 (?), his Daddy fought in the 1812 war and the Seminole War with Andy Jackson, so goes the family lore. He ended back up in Pulaski County Georgia 1838/40ish farming botton land (swamp) on a spot between Big Indian Creek and the Ocmulgee River. We’re a mixed breed of Scots/Irish with a tad bit of French Huegenault, got here just before the Rev War from the Carolina side of the Broad River. He and 3 sons and several brothers saw service with them Johnny Rebs. And not a single one owned any slaves. He lost his little piece of dirt to the Carpetbagger Taxman after the war, and died soon after.
Hey Cuz! This side of my family stayed in AL; they received land grants for their service during the Creek War of 1836.
My main branch is GA; those antecedents, most whom served in the CSA, were too poor to own slaves.
The only slave owners in my lineage (that I for sure know of) was Lt. Governor Thomas Broughton of SC who owned “Mulberry Castle” … and his descendants. Broughton’s father-in-law, Sir Nathaniel Johnson, was the then governor and previously was a Royal Governor of Carolina; before that, he was Governor of the Leeward Islands.
Me? I was born at Ft. Benning at the old army hospital! Dad, G-dad, GG-grandad from Columbus, GGG-grandad from Savannah via Ireland; he served in the Georgia Hussars during the Recent Unpleasantness.
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Bleah
There ARE other brands of butter, you know. I haven’t bought LoL in a while because it costs more than the brand I get elsewhere, and I buy that in large quantities and freeze it.
If having a demure native maiden on the cover is too insensitive, then the company should rename the brand Land O’ Laken and use a hot blonde in a bikini cutaway dirndl as its logo; they’ll probably double butter sales…
“Land o Taken”
Give it back to tyhe rightful owners!
You can’t swing a dead cat without someone being offended. Most always, they are liberal ass holes.
Animal abuse!
able-ist!
Species-ist!
Baaaaaaaaaad!
Reeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
You all just entirely invented a reason to be offended by manufacturing this nonsense about Land O Lakes removing the native maiden because of PC pressure.
It had nothing to do with it.
So when talking about people being too easily offended, maybe look in the damn mirror.
You, of all people, said that?
“It had nothing to do with it”
Now that is just plain bullshit.
I have been following this butter box issue
for decades. It was bound to happen and for
exactly the reason you deny.
Typical commie…deny history.
Just like China isn’t a Communist Country…
👍🏼
Oops…you did it again!
your ego is so large, it drives your mouth to constantly write checks your ass can’t cash.
All in an effort to cling to an empirically false philosophy. The fall shall be hard for you.

So enlighten us, our kind and benevolent holder of the superior intellect, lord and master of all that is political! We, the great deplorable unwashed masses, beseech you to share with us the secret of the disappearance of the fair indigenous maiden who graced the packaging of our favorite spread! Has the beautiful Mia gone the way of Hack Stone’s beloved Elaine?
So you’re now telling me that you believe every word on a press release from a greedy, capitalistic company that makes obscene profits through the repeated rape-by-artificial-insemination of non-consenting cows, a company that exploits a beautiful aboriginal womyn in it’s marketing? How decidedly un-communist of you!

You can say that again.
Grunt-bonics?
Sheeet, y’all done alreedy no
I seriously doubt Roh-Dog could say that again at all, especially with a straight face. I couldn’t even read it.
I will miss the maiden but at least they didn’t go with a “native of indeterminate gender”.
I’m surprised they didn’t replace the lass with a couple of “Broke Back” farmers.
Meh…I moved out of Minnesota last year; primarily for the taxes and lower cost of living, but the emerging Uber PC culture played heavily in my decision.
The Twin Cities is rapidly becoming the Berkley of the Midwest.
Shame, I liked their butter, but I figure it’s well past time we started playing by the same rules, and not patronizing businesses that cave to the SJZ howler monkies…I’ll be buying another brand from now on.
I really wished they had doubled down and put TWO maidens on the package and added “Now Twice As Good” instead of caving to the offended crowd.
What would really be interesting is if a MAGA hat was put on the package, then the offended would want the old package back.
Should have been changed to two American Indian Women wearing MAGA hats.
And Jussie Smollett in the corner?
BHWHAHAHAHA !!!!!
All those supposed farmers are all big fans of big gruberment handouts, in the form of subsidies.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they are all 0bama supporters.
Do us a favor, go find a Farmer or two, say that to them face to face and see just how quickly you get your ass kicked into next week!
They just erased a female Woman of Color from being visible to society. Racism and sexism.
Not sure why a non-caricature depiction of an American Indian as a brand is “racist”.
See above. All non-whites may only be shown as needing white help and protection. They are all equal to whites but only as long as they are dependent on white protection and aid. -especially- red folk.
Racist f#cktards.
They won’t miss my business, just like I don’t miss Gillette razor blades.
It’s a big country, be what you like, but don’t expect anyone else to like it.
Bernie is pissed at the wide choice of
deodorants. There should be only one choice.
The party approved choice.
They keep pushing Native culture out. Soon nobody will remember them for anything. It doesn’t get any more racist than trying to erase an entire race from pop culture.
There is a reason they don’t mention anything related to political correctness in their press release.
It’s because they didn’t do it because of PC pressure.
They did it because their entire marketing scheme for the last year or so is that they are farmer owned. They are trying to tap into the farmer’s market consumer trend.
In fact there are entire national grocery chains that are trying to tap into that marketing image.
The Indian maiden did not fit their marketing.
They explicitly say the reason they did it i their press release.
And Lefties never lie about their blatant racism.
Or that China isn’t a Communist Country…
Yeah.
We support the minority black man/woman in all that he or she does. Its called equality.
But yet we put our kids in private schools so our children do not have to go to school with their kids.
Typical left side thinking.
I see it all of the time.
Apparently someone – as usual – didn’t bother to read what’s presented above for content (emphasis added):
What you claim to be a “marketing decision” was the direct result of the above specious claim of “racism” – better known as “political correctness”. Once again, you prove yourself both mendacious and full of bovine organic fertilizer.
Either that, or you really do have a serious problem with reading comprehension.
Tidbit from one article “Native American artist Patrick DesJarlait, of the Ojibwe tribe, redesigned the packaging in the 1950s to foster “a sense of Indian pride,” the Minnesota Reformer reported.
His son, Robert DesJarlait, told the outlet that the image — which has been slammed by many as “racist” — has become a “paradox” for Native Americans.
“He was breaking a lot of barriers . . . Back in the ’50s, nobody even thought about stereotypical imagery. Today it’s a stereotype, but it’s also a source of cultural pride,” DesJarlait told the outlet”.
It’s a positive image, done by an Indian, at a time when there weren’t any. Now, it’s bad? F*ck political correctness– it’s all about power (“the issue is never the issue” for leftists, you know).
It’s raciss. Just like the Atlanta Braves is offensive (apparently Natives aren’t/weren’t brave?), the UND Fighting Sioux was offensive (did the Sioux not fight hard?), and the Cleveland Indians is offensive (all Natives of the Ohio River Valley need to be forgotten).
Meanwhile, the Vikings, the Fighting Irish, and the Yankees aren’t offensive. White wash everything so we forget our heritage.
Well, the Irish aren’t pussies, so we don’t get all wee-wee’d up over Notre Dame. Or the Celtics.
I do wish folks would pronounce it correctly.
^this!
History don’t give a squirt o pee about feelings, it just is.
I’m reverent to our history, the good and the bad, because it’s about progress not perfection.
What ever happens to the ‘melting pot’?
What happened to ‘out of many, one’?
That flag, this idea, our Constitution have been fought for by all stripes, why do some desire to erase these histories, to literally “whitewash” the past?
I want diversity as dictated by the market, not by decree and this decision was not natural.
I say again:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddrink/foodnews/land-olakes-removes-the-more-than-100-year-old-american-indian-butter-maiden-logo-from-packaging/ar-BB12KCmA
It’s called marketing, Commissar. And marketing, as a rule, has very little to do with the truth.
https://hotair.com/archives/karen-townsend/2020/04/17/racist-image-removed-butter-label-called-stereotypical/
I literally told my mate that your dumbass would show up here to correct everyone over a package of fucking butter. You really do think you are that smart don’t you.
He’s just a “half stick”.
And unsalted at that.
How is the image offensive? She sits holding the bounty of the land. As many Native Americans feel mother earth gives everything makes no sense. But, I guess it is par for the course when a company run by pussies is bullied by the ignorant few.
I just hate the fact their cheese sucks balls now….
It sucks balls so bad we’ve stopped buying it. I ate nothing but that cheese for most of my adult life, it’s hard and waxy and doesn’t melt for shit.
If you go to their website you will see dozens of other people complaining that something has changed in the makeup of their cheese and it’s pissing people off.
Shitty cheese and a generic logo aren’t going to do much for brand loyalty….just saying.
Aw, motherf*cker… I always liked that logo as a kid.

Now, about that “Peace Loving” statement… LOL
My dad said he was part Cherokee.
My mom said she was French.
Ancestry dot com says I am 92% Irish.

Who ya gonna believe? Liz Warren?
One of my relatives alleges that we’re descendants of Daniel Boone. It didn’t take much ancestral research to find that she’s full of shit.

The “Left”‘s issue with telling the truth is that they can’t handle the truth.
Think about it: an entire generation of people brought up to deny reality and lie like mangy animals, running for cover when Reality hits home.
First they took away the Butter Maiden. What’s next, the Saint Pauli girl? Aunt Jemimah? The Swedish Bikini Team? Mrs. Butterworth? It’s a conspiracy, folks! And when we rip off the mask, who do we find? It’s that Betty Crocker chick, exercising all that white privilege!
Naw, she answers to Big Oats: The Quaker.

Is that the new “Land of Lakken” logo? (smile)
If it isn’t, it ought to be.

I would call that a real marketing strategy, especially for the male shoppers.
