Guns in Merrie Old Englande

| October 24, 2019

punt gun

There may be a misconception about what you can or can’t own in the way of firearms in England.  The laws banning handguns have been in effect for a while, and those include any short-barreled gun that could be considered a handgun. However, there is a long list of guns that you can own and use, but because  they have a long barrel (or two), you are not barred from owning them.

Here’s the story with pictures for you kids.  You all may get your undies in a bunch over the punt gun (see photo), but remember, boys and girls: it’s supposed to be used for hunting and… er, nothing else.  Okay, sure….

As this is purely an educational article, I have to add that no bullets were fired and no waterfowl hurt in the writing of it, although hunting season is underway for waterfowl and deer season has already started for bowhunters.  Should I post a photo of hunting bows, too?

They must have some giant geese over there.

m r ducks.

Punt gun?? isn’t that what Navy uses during a certain athletic competition on the FIRST weekend in December? The one pictured appears to be longer than any gain they make the usual way.

Jus Bill

They were used on the Chesapeake Bay to market hunt ducks until the early 29th century. This is what I have read. They were very effective when loaded with buckshot.

From the American perspective, it’s still “may issue” wienieness that forbids self-defense… regardless of what guns you may own there.

David

A punt gun is just a tool for hunting in wholesalr rather than retail quantities.

Lawmakers in [formerly] Great Britain have also called for more Knife Laws due to the increase in stabbings. SEE what wonderful things more laws deliver?

Just imagine what they have in store
for increased stranglations.

Probably acid as well.

Gravity control will be a fun challenge.

Slow Joe

No right to self-defense?

Don’t the British gruberment has any concerns about the well-being and security of their people?

They must know LEOs can’t be

Joe, I think the British learned how bad it can go for gubmint having armed citizens around 19 Apr of 1775.

Especially if he happens to be a muzzie, cutting the head off a soldier… That’s just cultural diversity after all

Jus Bill

They are not people; they are SUBJECTS. That is the difference.

And why we have 1. Our own country, and 2. A civil right to own “arms.”

Personally, I think anyone who believes in putting their personal safety in the hands of someone else be it the government or law enforcement is a fool (and for those who believe in giving that responsibility to the government and think fearing the government is foolish, look at what happened to Christians in Ancient Rome, Jews and other so called “untermensch” in Nazi Germany, Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, the Soviet Union (especially when Josef Stalin was in power), China under Mao, the Killing Fields of Cambodia, North Korea, what’s currently happening in Venezuela and no the US has nothing to do with that, Venezuela brought this misery on itself, or how the drug cartels have a lot of power over the government in Mexico). Yeah, there’s a reason why we Americans are weary of the government and prefer not to have it too centralized. And unfortunately you can find a lot of people like that on the internet (Quora in particular is definitely a place where you can find them, many of which (most of them being foreigners) can’t understand why we Americans like to have guns). Of course I won’t have any sympathy if they find themselves in the middle of a problem and lack the means to solve it and law enforcement is unable to respond in time. I have very little sympathy for those who refuse to take responsibility for their own safety.

I’ve noticed that on Quora. The level of ignorance is astounding. And that many are proud of their ignorance is mind blowing. I’ve found that the question most asked on the gun issue is some variation of “why do you need an assault rifle?” I try to answer honestly on respectably to those genuinely concerned and confused. To those from other countries who usually make snarky comments or trollish questions, I politely tell them to pound sand with a pickaxe. I say politely because the Quora admins have warned me many times about being “unkind,” “belligerent,” and “argumentative.”

I agree with you there ArmyATC. Now I do appreciate the foreigners that actually take the time to understand the philosophy and present it neutrally and making it clear that they have no skin in the game whatsoever. But the ones that really make my blood boil are the ones that make stupid ass comments saying how you can just go up to someone and shoot them (can’t tell if this them being painfully ignorant or a bunch insufferable smartasses). No stupid, you go to prison for that as well as having your 2nd Amendment rights taken away. Or the ones that it’s like the Wild West were we just shoot each other all the time (no moron, don’t pay attention to that Hollywood crap and once again you do something like that you’re either going to end up dead, in the hospital, or in prison (which will definitely come after the hospital if you survive)). One such clown is named Peter Macdonald (you might have even had an encounter with him once) who is an Australian living in Canada and whom I highly doubt has spent any significant time in the US (if he did, he wouldn’t be so damn clueless about what life is like in the US as he thinks it’s violent. Yeah whatever you pathetic wimp.). I believe (if I remember this correctly, I could be remembering it wrong) he even believes in censoring so called “hate speech” which he wrote as a comment on someone else’s answer (that tells you what kind of brain power he has).

ArmyATC

I believe I have had a few encounters with Mr. MacDonald. His type are the ones who truly infuriate me. Their entire ideology concerning the US can be boiled down to one sentence, “you have too many rights.”

Yes, there are a few who are genuinely looking for information and to have an honest conversation about things they know nothing about. Unfortunately, they seem to be in the minority.

Cameron Kingsley

That pretty much mirrors my thoughts on him as well ArmyATC. I wonder how someone like him would feel if the very same government he trusts were to turn on him.

Brits can use air rifles to control pests like rats & squirrels.

Love that channel

Before we cut down our trees to allow for renovation and expansion of the ATC house, I used an airgun to pick off the damned tree rats that would raise holy hell in the attic. It seems the local governance and constabulary don’t take kindly to people popping off shots near the town, even if it was with a custom .22lr target rifle.
