Shooting results in death of a Mississippi man. Sheriff said it’s most likely self-defense
By: Lici Beveridge
A man was shot to death Sunday night in Lamar County, but he may have been shot in self-defense, Sheriff Danny Rigel said.Thirty-one-year-old Henry Johnson of Lumberton was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, Coroner Cody Creel said.
The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Little Black Creek Road in Lumberton. A 911 call came in about a fight at the location. Another call came in soon after to report one of the suspects had been shot twice.
When deputies arrived, two people were performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the shooting victim. One of them told deputies he was the person who shot Johnson.
After talking to witnesses and investigating the scene, Rigel said the shooting appears to have been in self-defense.
Rigel said several witnesses who saw the fight told deputies the victim was the aggressor. They said the fight started at one location. The shooter left the scene but the victim followed him to another location and continued the fight.

No charges filed after man dies after shooting at Upstate Lowe’s
Shooting happened Sunday afternoon
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Spartanburg police said an argument between two men led to a shooting outside the Lowe’s store on East Blackstock Road on Sunday afternoon.
Monday afternoon, officers said no charges would be filed, because it was a case of self defense.
AdvertisementPolice said they were called to the scene around 2:45 p.m.
Officers said the men were acquaintances and knew each other prior to the argument.
The Spartanburg County coroner said the victim, Randall Belk, 54, of Roebuck, died a short time later at a hospital.
Police said Belk continued to confront the man who opened fire, threatening him with a large piece of lumber, and the man shot him. He was taken for questioning but released.

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Nations and peoples who forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms. — Robert Heinlein

Winnings piling up! Between the FGSs and popcorn sales thru the roof (Thanks Lester, Young G, and Mikey) we may be able to pay the power bill this month.
Make sure you check out the comments on the Javaon (sigh) story. You would think that a bunch of miscreant dickweeds from TAH were there.
The Hattiesburg Linkie had ’bout another 6 maybe 9 FGSs in a row.
The WTFF 4 linkie lead to a bit on a bank robber in sunglasses. Article didn’t say if they were a pair of Cheap Sunglasses.
ps: almost forgot…nice hand howitzer you got there Mister… Would you sell it?
Nope. It rests in my desk drawer when not being exercised at the range- big fun when changing from .38 poodle shooters to a round more fit for a man.
Arguably one of the finest handguns ever made. If it only had the countersunk cylinder to clean up its looks, I would buy one in a heartbeat. Truly a “if you could only have one gun for everything” finalist.
What? The football player’s mummy isn’t at the microphone/camera gathering protesting that ‘hedindonuffin’? Slacker!!!
Ph! Was that too cynical on my part???
Nope. Not too cynical, not cynical enough, juuuuuust right, Mama Bear.
Not enough. More than once, when i called a mom to tell them their darling had been arrested, i was told their little baby just could not have done it. Impossible.
Back in the day, a young man(16yrs old) took his gun to the party store down the street, walked in and pointed it at the owner, who was behind the counter. The owner grabbed his gun and put 3 rounds in the black, terminating the armed robbery career of the young man. His mom showed up about when the 3d patrol car showed up and tried to get in the door, “to he’p her baby”. She was quiet until the media showed up, then did her best DFO(Done Fell Out) demonstration, screaming and rolling around in the street.
Her reasoning for his actions, when interviewed was, “how else he s’posed to get his moneys”?
So when do the protesters gather at Lowe’s?? They don’t sell “assault rifles” either. Too, they do have parking lots…
I’ve never pointed a weapon at a LEO* and have never been shot by a LEO.
Must be a coincidence, I’ll report back if that changes.

Here’s a further clarification of my comment from yesterday on the “journalist criminal / victim inversion”:
As noted previously, the term “victim” is neutral. It can be used to described somebody shot by an armed robber, or an armed robber shot by a store owner in a justifiable homicide. What’s also different between today’s shooting in Mississippi, and the ones yesterday in Poughkeepsie and Phoenix, is that the police yesterday apparently hadn’t yet released the names of who was dead-over-there. This meant the reporters in those stories had reduced options for what to call those shot.
Today’s story in Mississippi is somewhat different in that Johnson was identified, and the reporter could have used his name instead of “victim” in the last graf to avoid any confusion.
Although I respect NHSparky’s opinion on most things, his comment about changing the word “victim” to “perp” seems off for a couple of reasons. In the first place, “perp” as a shortened form of “perpetrator” implies guilt. For obvious reasons, including potential libel, the news media is supposed to stick to reporting available facts and not act as a public courtroom.
The use of the word “perp” is also a type of professional jargon reporters are supposed to avoid. It’s okay to quote directly a member of law enforcement who uses the term, but a reporter who uses it on his own hook comes off sounding like a sort of wannabe badass mall cop who just put the cuffs on some kid for skateboarding in front of Sears.
Okay, fucking alleged.
But if someone is breaking into my house at 3 am, 1–it ain’t fucking Avon, 2–I’m not going to parse definitions with them, 3–they’ll be lucky if they don’t end up on a slab.
So while the newsies, might have the benefit of time and distance, and may have to remain neutral (ha!), I sure as fuck don’t.
Point taken. And nobody commenting on TAH needs to use the word “alleged” because comments have an assumed element of opinion.
The reason I mention this stuff is because although “victim” is a bad way to describe somebody– not the Avon lady– breaking into a house at 3 A.M., it serves a purpose unless there’s a better term available. Where it becomes an issue is when it’s used to imply that a Darwin Award candidate is an “innocent” victim.
It might also be mentioned that a bigger problem with some of these shooting stories, at least it seems to me, is that they leave out relevant facts. In neither yesterday’s Phoenix story about the airman shot, nor the one today from Mississippi was there a mention of if the dead guy was in any way armed. Or if it would have mattered. Remember that in the Trayvon Martin case a few years ago, the news media went to great lengths to describe Martin as an innocent child who merely wanted to buy a bag of Skittles. As it turned out, George Zimmerman said the reason he shot Martin was because Martin had Zimmerman down and was pounding his head into the sidewalk.
