Midweek Open Thread-Additional Topics?
What additional topics would you like to see posted here?
Last week, I asked for what generation you were in. It appears that the majority of those, who responded, identified with the Baby Boomer generation. Based on the timelines provided, the youngest of the Boomers turn 55 this year.
To build on this, what additional topics would you like to see posted about?
Other topics welcomed here as well, given the nature of the thread. Feel free to post your random thoughts, give us links to other news, or to light someone’s rear end on fire.

I would like to see Lars given the rights to post and write here freely!
Meh, he DOES obviously like to make himself a human dartboard!
That is simultaneously intriguing and terrifying.
I would like to hear more stories from vets…kind of like watching history being written…by reading veteran’s stories
Why, you want war stories or other events that happened while there. Lots of all them are buried and when brought up they only bring up the other side of reality of what happened there that is now fought every day in our lives since that we cannot erase. Not all our memories are good and in some cases there is more bad unforgettable ones that cannot be erased than good ones that fade with time.
I have no real leanings, although I do like historical stuff, because it does somehow relate to what is going on now.
“although I do like historical stuff,”
Here’s a project right up your alley then, Ex:
Long Binh WAC Detachment, Jan 1967 – October 1972.
I know the subject is Army related, but we all know you would do a good job in researching it.
Thank you. I will dig into that!
Ex-PH2, Another, if you are not aware of it, is a site for Doughnut Dollies that is an interesting read, granted they were not Military but did provide some needed distraction. Several were Killed in Nam. There also is a group known as “Misty”.
Offered without comment:
That old line about drinking like a sailor isn’t bullshit.
To probably no one’s surprise, U.S. service members drink more days out of the year than any other industry, according to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2013 through 2017 and analyzed by the Delphi Health Group.
According to the survey of 27,000 people across 25 industries, the average American warfighter spent 130 total days drinking in the last year, well above the average of 91 across more than any of the other 24 industries, including mining, construction, finance, and education.
More importantly, U.S. service members actually increased their alcohol intake by 34 more days out of the year over those four years. By 2017, the average U.S. service members spent 41 days binge drinking — more than any other industry in the study.
Animals. Animals, all of you. We throw the word “lethality” around a lot here, but you know what’s really lethal? Binging on cheap liquor.
The good news is, the average of 2.2. drinks enjoyed by U.S. service members in a single sitting is relatively low compared to the rest of those surveyed; people employed in construction have the highest average of drinks consumed in a sitting (3 drinks.)

Pro tip- never drink anything that is actually on fire.
3 drinks in a sitting is considered a lot??? What is this – further proof that the country is filled with wimps?
3 drinks? SHIT, that’s not even a warmup for me!!!
I can make a bottle of Bourbon last all day.
Hell, I’ve got bourbon that has been on my shelf for 20 years. Irish, on the other hand…
just how big are those drinks?
🙂
Heh. I’m sure the pearl-clutching nannies would lose their minds if they saw this today, but when I was stationed in Korea we had a soda machine in the barracks that dispensed Budweiser for $0.25/can.
And I had a jar with quarters in it on my desk…
BTW we also had co-ed showers but it wasn’t nearly as cool as that scene in Starship Troopers would make you think. 😉
Had beer machines in the barracks in Korea 88-90 and 99-00, and in Germany 93-96. I think it was up to 75 cents though.
I’m thinking of writing a little about John Locke’s influence on Jefferson and others..
A few commenters have noted that some of my stuff is more like college than they’d like so perhaps that’s not the best choice for my next outing…
The concepts behind the revolution and the discussions here at the birth of the nation over what does freedom actually mean and how to protect your freedoms from the government are most interesting and inevitably paint the founders as guys deeply opposed to most governments and government interactions.
Which, if we are really constitutional conservatives, should make us all less defensive of the power structure and more defensive over all of our personal liberties as our modern government tries to encroach on virtually every amendment that matters in that regard.
For what it’s worth, I’d very much enjoy reading such things from you VOV
I like the funny stuff that happens in military careers. Actually, it probably happens in all careers. So, along those lines…. A couple of months back I posted a tale of being a “Boat Officer”. Aircraft carriers that pull into port overseas or really anywhere other than US carrier ports, anchor quite a ways out to sea – the ports can’t handle a ship that big. Liberty boats are run from the carrier to shore, and each boat has an officer, typically from the air wing, assigned to ensure the safe operation of the boat. “Here, Ltjg Doofus, sit through this two hour class on the rudiments of piloting, take this test, and you are now responsible. It’s your ass if anything goes wrong with the boat and passengers even though you don’t know anything.” So, there we were, anchored off Palma De Mallorca. It’s about midnight and I am the Boat O on a 50′ launch full of about 100 sailors who are, thankfully, generally well behaved. Seas are kicking up a bit. Both officer and enlisted liberty boats are unloading at the afterbrow, the platform at the stern, so the ship can shield the boat from the worst of the swell. Even so, the boat is moving some – up and down a bit, slamming against the platform. The coxswain is working the engine, the bow hook (sailor manning the forward lines) is tending the line up forward holding the boat against the platform, and the stern hook and I are grabbing the slightly drunken sailors as they try climbing out of the boat. We are actually grabbing them and sort of throwing them toward the stern hatch and gangway. Then I hear a voice “Sir, can you give me a hand?” The voice calls again and I realize it is behind me!! Where there’s no platform!! There, in the water, is a sailor holding the platform. The stern hook and I hauled him out of the water. “Sailor, what happened?” says I. He replies “I got off the wrong side of the boat!” There are so many… Read more »
A sure enough sea story, yep, I’ve got one!
It was a civilian vessel set out from Scotland to one of the islands west of there. The sea was rather rough, but being a land lubber I didn’t know enough to be concerned. Somebody finally told us that it was taking much longer than usual because of rough seas. OK, fine, I still don’t know enough about boat stuff to be concerned, until we start rocking and rolling toward the dock.
Calmer seas were expected in an hour or so. They told the couple of hundred pax that we could either stay aboard until then, or any of us who wished to could go below decks and get off the boat that way. There was an opening in the side of the boat with a rubber raft sort of thing below. The sea carried it up to 8 to 10 feet below us then dropped to about 30 beet below us. I count jumping off that boat into the dingy among the most foolish things I’ve ever done!
But given the choice of getting stuck on the boat or the island I had planned to visit, the decision seemed obvious. I am aware of only one injury among those of us who chose to jump.
“It was a civilian vessel set out from Scotland to one of the islands west of there”
Nova Scotia?
You’re almost as bad as me – is Nova Scotia an island? Ya gonna MAKE me go look at a map….
I’m sorry, I thought you meant Ireland vs island.
Um, If you travel west far enough as well as use one of two ways to go you could even reach the Hawaiian Islands via a water route.
I’d like to see more sock-puppets. I mean, c’mon, if your heroes spent all of the time and effort to present phony credentials, defend them. Tells us how they never got over Macho Grande, how they survived the Salem witch trials, and why the wear the American Defense Medal and the Global War on Terrorism medal.
I sent this link to admin on 8 April, but I guess he/they is/are swamped.
In case no one has sent you the link:

During a House Financial Services Committee hearing with “megabank” representatives, Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) got a lesson on the student loan crisis in the United States after she attempted to place the blame on big banks.
At one point during the hearing, Waters tried to tie the current student loan crisis to big banks, asking those present to explain what they’re doing to help student borrowers. To Waters’ surprise, none of the banks she questioned had any part in financing student loans, largely because the government took that over.
None of the bankers stepped forward to answer because none of them were involved in student lending. Waters was forced to call on Brian T. Moynihan, the CEO and chairman of Bank of America.
“We stopped making student loans in 2007 or so,” Moynihan explained, catching Waters off guard.
Michael L. Corbat, the CEO and chairman of Citigroup, noted that his bank exited in 2009.
Jamie Dimon, the CEO and chairman of JPMorgan Chase, put an even finer point on his answer, directly pointing to government intervention as his bank’s reasoning for abandoning student loans.
“When the government took over student lending in 2010 or so, we stopped doing all student lending,” Dimon explained.
As the bankers noted, the U.S. government largely took over student lending and, under former President Barack Obama, they added approximately $1 trillion to the total U.S. student loan burden.
Check out the video. Unbelievable. Time for her to go:
Grrrrr. And how many taxpayer millions did she siphon off for the bank her husband had interest in?
Epic fail. That nobody who watches the MSM will ever see.
At first I thought some of the dumb shit she said was satire, sadly I realize now that’s not at all accurate.
If you’re bringing people in to question them it might be a wise idea to know the law you’re going to question them on before they get there and make you look like a completely clueless fucking moron.
Some have said she is dumber than a bag of hammers, but even hammers serve a useful purpose. So, I am thinking, she is dumber than a box of rocks, or better yet, a bag of dog shit, as dog shit has no useful purpose and it stinks.
And her staff, too. She didn’t write those questions herself.
It would appear that Empress Maxine the Mome never heard the phrase, “Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt.”
She knows it well. She just got the intent rather amusingly backwards.
I really would enjoy a little humor on these pages.
Jeez, man. It’s not like we don’t try! I think we do pretty good for amateurs. Remember, “you get what you pay for”.
Well since nobody else bothered to post it, I’ll just stick this right here….FIRST….
My man Gray Beard made the comment last Friday on the Friday TAH Weekend Open thread that I needed to get a life. I laughed my ass off. Unbeknownst to him, lurking around TAH IS my life. And it is a good life. I lurked for years without commenting cause I was usually a week to ten days behind due to work and such. Since my enforced “can’t do nothing” time started last Spring, I’ve caught up, became current and achieved a long sought out goal. Become the FIRST to post on the Friday Weekend Open Thread. An Award that is EARNED, never given. The company we keep here has been the anchor that kept me going, when some thought I wouldn’t make it.
I don’t even mid Larsie Boi too much, after all, seagulls gonna seagull. I’ll be here as long as y’all let me hangout.
Love the History and Civics lessons, even on a college level.
“Love the History and Civics lessons”
I am amazed at the level of knowledge displayed here. History being the sweet spot. Veterans are far better educated on the subject and I have learned quite a bit from the postings and comments.
I always appreciate your kind words on my behalf, if my words bring you some pleasure during the day that makes me feel the effort is well appreciated.
I enjoy reading what people think about my ideas even when we disagree. It’s only through being challenged to defend one’s thoughts that we grow. Consequently I grow a lot here 🙂
Glad you’re doing better and hope you keep on doing better brother for a lot longer than anyone including you thought possible.
“lurking around TAH IS my life. And it is a good life”
Amen, bro. Substitute “the internet” for “TAH” and that’s me. I often wonder how I lived before the internet. Even when I go out to socialize we often wind up discussing the interesting things we have discovered on the internet. And not just pron, either! I blame the internet for at least part of my weight gain over the last twenty years. If you have even a modicum of curiosity you can follow a trail hither and yon on the internet indefinitely, like Brownian motion. Thank you, Al Gore!
Here is a rather strange update to one of the feel good stories from earlier this week that was an update from last month.
https://5newsonline.com/2019/04/09/man-arrested-after-stalking-alma-woman-who-was-cleared-of-charges-for-killing-boyfriend/
It is unknown what his intentions were huh? I’ll assume he has a death wish.
I would like see a place to simply ask a question of the people here.Something like the old talk rooms that allowed discussion of a topic. As an example I am starting to wonder if the special forces thing has gotten out of hand.I know they are needed but if we have to fight China UDT ain’t going to make it.they are great at what they do,but some of it like passing out bags of money the paramilitary spooks can do.At one time those guys were paid to get in and out with out a fight
I was born free, and I don’t care how many commies I’ve got to dispatch, I will die free.
(That was toned down slightly to not offend anyone’s sensibilities or trigger a visit from a LEO but I’m definitely thinking it)
if it ain’t working change it. not making a suggestion just about to locke up for the night
I have a request. Stop posting asinine memes that just make this community look like a bunch of morons who still think it’s 1955.
It is absolutely not a struggle against communism.
“It is absolutely not a struggle against communism”
The hell it isn’t.
Where were you in 1955?
I was old enough to understand the fear in my mothers eyes. They have made great progress since then and it shows in your comments.
Ah, come on, Commissar…you must really like us “Morons”, because you keep posting on this Blog…
Admit it…You are a Closet “Moron”…😉

Seagulls gonna seagull!
larsiesmommieacommie?
Communism, socialism, totalitarianism, etc. Call it what you want. Mongoose vs. Cobra, good vs. evil. There will always be a struggle between those who want to tell other people how to live and those who don’t want to be told how to live.
PS
I suspect that poster at the beginning was produced some years ago.
Maxine Waters is not the only Democrat who lacks a Brain.
Check out the stunt Ted Lieu pulled yesterday on Candace Owens.
You Go, Girl! PREACH IT!!!
“Rep. Ted Lieu plays recording of Candace Owens statement on Adolf Hitler (C-SPAN”
Nicely done. She not only shit back on Lieu (who finds the US Constitution to be an obstruction) but also that fat, useless Nadler. Nadler can’t even chastise her properly. Great!
If the Dems keep their hearings and investigations going like this for the next two years, this will make for some quality entertainment.
This story reminds me of someone whom I understand duct-taped a dog in a plane…
Or was that an urban legend…
“Large Dog In Plane’s Cockpit Likely Caused Fatal Crash, NTSB Says”
https://www.foxnews.com/us/large-dog-in-planes-cockpit-likely-caused-fatal-crash-ntsb-says
See, even bird-brained Bernasty knew it was a bad idea to leave a dog loose on a flight in a dual control light aircraft. If Fido steps on or wedges a rudder pedal or control yoke when you are trying to land, the NTSB will be investigating your death or serious injury.
Being a former proud servant of a 140 lb. mastiff, the first thing I thought of when I read “large, 75 lb. dog” was this scene—
