Midweek Open Thread– Your Generation?
A few years ago, I remember somebody on here lambasting Generation X. Someone was being a snowflake in an article, or the specific article triggered an exchange that led to talk about a snowflake. Then, someone said, “Must be Gen X”. But, being a member of Generation X, and not identifying with the person being talked about, I jumped in and “dropped a red pill”. In the military, most of the Generation X were in the middle to senior ranks. Gen X was also increasingly retiring from the military.
Millennials predominantly fills the ranks; I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of the members of the military are Millennials. But wait! There’s more! The most junior ranks are increasingly being filled by an even newer generation, Generation Z.
This would lead to the next question. What generation dominates This Aint Hell? What generation are you part of? Silent Generation (Before 1946)? Baby Boomer (1946-1964)? Generation X (1965-1981)? Millennial (1982-1995)? or Generation Z (1996-)?
Of course, as is the case with any open thread, you could talk about anything else you desire. Heck, think someone is a ding bat and you want to roast his or her rear end? This is a perfect place to do it (smile).

1945 under Truman-Silent majority.
1945 under FDR-Silent majority…
2nd. I loved that cartoon.
A Boomer.
Sworn in under Ford, Retired under Obama.
Boomer here, right after WWII. And possibly second.
I like making them work for the answer.
Somebody asks me how old I am, I just say “Born during the Truman Administration” and laugh while they’re trying to figure it out.
So…between April 12, 1945 and January 20, 1953.
Were you before or after the Dewey headline?
Were
Fucking iPhone
Fixed.
See, making you work a little bit for the answer. (Insert best Batman’s Joker’s laugh here)
After the Dewey headline.
Boomer, 1962. And Johnny Quest rocked!
I consider the period 1960-1968 it’s own generation. The post WW2 “baby boom” really ended in 56 or 58 and the “gen x” is really a product of the late 60s and early 70s.
I call us the “lost generation”.
We weren’t old enough to really be part of the baby boom’s legacy, and too old to be part of the gen x “thing”…
I think your on to something there. My three older sisters were definitely boomers (they’re all 10+ years older than me, but that’s a story for a different time), but 60’s kids grew up in a pretty unique time. We were old enough to be raised on some really good rock n roll though!
What about his friend Haji? Hmmmmmmm?
I heard he was Johnny Walker Lindh’s recruiter and wound up in Gitmo.
I’m a “young” Baby Boomer and Gray Panther still a few years away from Social Security eligibility. I remember reporting to my first duty station. The unit commander was a mustang Captain and amazed that his new 2LT was born in the 60s. Now I can see 60 looming in the not so distant future.
I remember the shock I felt when I was getting new PVT’s that were born after my BASD. Wasn’t a good day. Many beers died.
Same here, received privates born after my BASD and having less time on earth, by years, than I had in the military. I thought it was funny.
Gen X’er, born when LBJ was President.
Gen X, Just after Nixon took over.
Gen X, LBJ was still president, and had the privilege to serve through five POTUSs. I would guess that this commenter wasn’t up on current events (as designated by the above timelines). Snowflake is a relatively new term applicable to the “Millennials” and the “Generation Z” crowd.
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a change in military discipline?
The guy I responded to pointed the finger to Generation X out of habit. “Must be Generation X”. Then I pointed the Millennials out. It’s like how they clowned the Millennials out for swallowing tide pods… That was mostly Generation Z doing that.
Snowflake is a variation of previous terms used to describe whiny liberals.
Very true.
Boomer here looking to really retire in just a few more years.
Born in ‘84 and reject being described as a “millennial.” In high school they were calling us “Generation-Y.” Personally I thought the dividing dates were arbitrary and bullshit anyway.
I have seen multiple start dates for millennials, depending on which site you believe..
Boomer. I like Ike. Never met Harry Truman but I think I would have liked him.
Late GenX-er here. Lost my V-card the day before Cobain rearranged his cranium. In late 2001 I dropped out of college to join the RCAF, best decision of my life.
Boomer. 1955.
same here boomer 1955
Eisenhower was POTUS when I was hatched
served a couple of months for Nixon, all of Ford and all but 1 month of Carter
1955 also…wouldn’t change a thing
Last year of boomers (1964) here.
Same as EOD Rick, 1964.
Gen X
Ass-end of Baby boomer Generation here. Iv’e noticed that common sense and values are displayed across all generations.
Iv’e met people born in the 90s who have their shit together and more than my share of old fools.
First half of the previous century.
The war was over.
Nobody heard of Korea yet.
Life was tit.
Born under LBJ, enlisted under the Gipper, Commissioned by Slick Willy, retired under Barry. There were a couple of Bushes in there as well.
Obviously Reagan was best. May as well rank administrations on how well the military was supported under each:
1- Gipper
2- “W”
3- Bush Sr
4- Willy
5- “O”
Willy got a bad rap because of the huge draw down from Cold War Status. However that drawdown was all planned out by the Bush Sr. Administration, he simply executed. But when he allowed other cuts in for no good reason then decided to Wag the Dog his place dropped.
Barry and friends were downright antagonistic at times. Like they wanted to take things away just because we had them. Also he was completely over the top with the extrajudicial killings. He got a free pass from the media because of the “D” card but it it was crazy for a while.
Enlisted under the Peanut Farmer …
Retired under the husband of Michelle Obama.
Ronnie and Weinberger were the best.
Born under JFK.
Oh, got it now … Boomer!
Generation X. Born when Richard Nixon was president, two successful manned moon expeditions had already been executed, combat troops still deployed to Vietnam, etc. Turn 50 next year.
Served under Bush Senior, Clinton, Bush Junior, Obama, and Trump.
Baby-Boomer.
Heard a funny story about them the other day.
Seems that in 1976 when Daltrey, Townshend, Entwistle and Moon went to Buckingham Palace to receive their Knighthoods, somehow the front door was left open and the Queen’s Corgies escaped.
Bottom line: It was The Who Let The Dogs Out!!/smile
Really, Claw?
The.very.best.rock.and.roll.band…evah!
Didn’t take the birth canal slippery slide til Ike was sworn in.
……..

Late 50’s Boomer.
X, but I self identify as Generation XXX. Three times x-ier, for her pleasure.
This Generation Z is going to be awesome, some high-functioning, meme-wielding, autistic sumsobitches.
Gen X, baby!
Oldest Lieutenant in the Army (until last month)!
Technically Gen-X, but very late Gen X. Born under the waning days of the Carter admin. I’ve heard my in-betweeners (of which TOW would be a member) described as “The Oregon Trial Generation”. We remember life before the Internet, but came of age during the personal computer revolution.
One term to describe those born in the late 1970s and early 1980s is “Xennials”.
Ain’t sayin’.
Iirc, you said you were a WAVE. When were they folded into the navy again? 😉
Ah! The WAVES, WACs, and WAFs all ended during the Carter Administration’s efforts to erode the military into sawdust.
You mentioned your age for when you served in the Navy. So, I would put you down as a Baby Boomer.
I am a “Baby Boomer”, born David Roy Trueblood, Monday 28 January 1946, in Ellensburg, Washington, during a poker game in a tent beside the railroad tracks.
Boomer. Truman was President and we had not went to Korea yet.
NASA should have a “Rocket Scientist of the Week” award program. My neighbor kid worked at a car dealership changing oil. He did a test drive with a customers car and talked a ton of trash about the customer…
The customer had a camera in the car recording the interior of the car whenever it was on…
So he got shitcanned and told me “I didn’t know that he had a camera in the car”…
Ummmm Uuuuhhhhhhh huh…….
Forehead Slap and if not the winner of Rocket Scientist Award of the week, truly an honorable mention…
Sorry, that was supposed to be a gif…
Stupid computers…
Changed that for you.
X-er. Born betwe3n Apollo 1 and Apollo 11.
Born less than a year after Apollo 11 landed on the moon.
Late Truman on the birth end, Carter and Reagan while in. Postponed my reup till after Ronnie’s election to be sure I never worked for that fucking peanut farmer again.
That is a heck of a question to ask. Here it depends on who you ask as to some of the smart asses that are here once and a while, older than dirt and shoveled it or what was it like living with Dinosaur’s. There is also the age old question as to when entered the mobile incubator (silent generation) or when removed from the mobile incubator (baby boomer). What’s with the description as to the name baby boomer, rubber broke or what. Oh well carve another notch next month at turning 21 again.
Helps me get further insight on those who post here.
This site leans to the right. So far, most of those who replied are Baby Boomers. This fits with surveys that show that the Baby Boomers have taken over the conservative niche, with Generation X transitioning to the conservative end of the political spectrum. In fact, in the last presidential election, Generation X caucused with the boomers.
On another note, what happened with the older generations will also happen to ours. Gives us something to ponder about with regards to our future.
Geez, just realized, early boomer, kids, first half of gen x, one kids kids, mills, their kids, z’s, still awful early for the next ones, guess will see what happens in the next 10 years.
I usually lurk and don’t post comments as much, but love the site.
Born 1980 (Gen X), Commissioned after Bush was elected in 2002, Iraq Vet
Born under LBJ, enlisted during the 1st year of Ronnie’s 2nd term. I got out during W’s first year.
Baby Boomer first album I bought: Disraeli Gears, served under Carter then Reagan.
KA-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM-ER
FDR was in the WH, so “Silent” I guess, but I’m not very. One of my FitReps said “outspoken”, and I don’t think it was complimentary.
Boomer, 1956
Boomer, in under Nixon, out under Clinton’s first term.
Baby Boomer(1955). TV was my babysitter. We were still taught Civics in school..
Boomer born in the last year of the Truman administration.
Enlisted during the NIXON administration.
Retired during Slick Willie’s administration.
Gen X. #1 song in the US day I was born was The Troggs, “Wild Thing”.
Should tell you something there.
Gen Y, the memory holed middle ground between X and Millennial. Carter had been defeated but Reagan was not yet been sworn in, and I’ve got two more years to my twenty.
You’re a, “Xennial”.
Gen X. I share the same birth month and day with the “King of Pop” and the same year the rock band AC/DC was formed. Enlisted towards the end of the Bush Sr. Administration and retired the year Ob was reelected.
The Baby Boom is kind of subdivided.
The Early Boomers, born at the tail end of WW2, were in College during the Camelot Years. They tend to be idealistic.
The Mid-Boomers (Hippies) were born after the Korean War, and were in college during the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were the TV Generation. They tend to be more egocentric, politically liberal, and naive. Bill Clinton was a Mid-Boomer.
The Late Boomers (or Me Generation) grew up during the 1970s. They tend towards selfishness and subvert the ideals of the earlier Boomers to excuse it. They’re the asshole generation that supported the Weather Underground and Pol Pot. Barack Obama is a Late Boomer.
Generation X are the first children of the Early Boomers. They grew up during the Cold War and the Reagan/Bush Administrations. They are the Cable TV / MTV Generation.
Generation Y (The Pre-Millennials) were the Thaw Generation that grew up during the Clinton Administration and went to college during the second Bush administration. They are the Computer / Internet Generation. They are the Millennials people complain about. They are characterized with poor socialization skills due to helicopter parenting and lessened empathy. Their fringe politics are influenced by chronic underemployment and political instability during their era. They have never met a Holocaust survivor and don’t know why Israel should exist.
Generation Z or M (The Post-Millennials) were the War on Terror generation. They were in kindergarten or grade school when the towers fell and are going to college or just graduating now. They are the Smart Phone / Reality TV Generation. They have never lived in a period of peace or stability.
My mom was an Early Boomer, my dad was a member of the Silent Generation. As a Generation X, I remember growing up before having access to cable or to MTV.
I thought both were awesome when we finally had cable installed. Until then, I remember being a remote control that turned a knob to one of three/four TV stations. If I was lucky enough to stay up, I remember the colored bars that showed up after the last program.
Here’s another breakdown of the generations. Generation Y and Millennials are interchangeable:
