Moderate Taliban?
This is why I never liked the old British slap-stick humor. You see, stupid is funny until it becomes dangerous and inevitably it always becomes dangerous.
This however is a whole new level of stupid.
U.S. President Barack Obama’s proposal to reach out to moderate Taliban will fail to end the Afghan insurgency as it is inflexible Taliban leaders who are orchestrating the war, not moderates, analysts said.
Obama, in an interview with the New York Times newspaper published on its website on Saturday, expressed an openness to adapting tactics in Afghanistan that had been used in Iraq to reach out to moderate elements there.
Am I the only one who sees this amateurish move as painfully ignorant? No, it seems.
“Obama’s comment resemble a dream more than reality,” said Waheed Mozhdah, an analyst who has written a book on the Taliban.
“Where are the so-called moderate Taliban? Who are the moderate Taliban?” asked Mozhdah, who was an official in both the Taliban and the Karzai governments.
Karzai’s pro-Western administration and the growing number of foreign forces in Afghanistan have increasingly come under attack from a resurgent Taliban, with Obama now describing Afghanistan as a top foreign policy priority for his new administration.
“‘Moderate Taliban’ is like ‘moderate killer’. Is there such a thing?”, asked writer and analyst Qaseem Akhgar.

PS: I think Jimmy Carter is the happiest American right now because if Obama continues to follow this path, Carter’s legacy of being the worst President in modern times will be eclipsed.

You all knock an idea before you even let it work out. Arent you the same people who will sit there and preach on, and on about how the surge in Iraq worked even when many in my party said it would not? And now I can admit that surprisingly, the surge did seem to be effective.
This is our new Presidents attempt at finding a solution. Wasnt Karzi a warlord who fought other warlords and killed innocents in Afghan, but was just American enough that we picked him to be the president?
Perhaps through education, we can show these people that have lived with nothing, and had only one choice in joining with the Taliban exactly what the US stands for. We can show them that we have Muslims in the US, we can show them that we worship the SAME EXACT GOD as they do, we can show them that we are trying to rebuild their country, not take it over as the Russians tried.
We do not know what they have been told, shown, taught, coerced into believing. By attempting to show the benifits, both socially and economically that come along with working WITH us, we might make allies where before we made widows…

As to the “idea”, kindly go point out the “moderate taliban”? If you can find any, please be so good as to point one of them out to us. By the way, is the “moderate taliban” those who give you pain killers before they behead you? The ones who just throw acid on school girls arms, not their faces? SD, you are so out of your element in this conversation that it boggles the mind. You chiming in on this is like a boy scout who’s working toward a first aid badge arguing with trauma surgeons. Spend a year over there and see if you can find yourself some moderate Taliban. We’ll send a spoon and bag over there to collect what remains of you.
Seriously. In this instance, we rise above your level of expertise so quickly that I’m surprised we don’t get the bends.
The surge in Iraq was a completely different story. The moderate Sunnis we partnered with were outside of the system. They were the guys AQI was counting on to give them support. When the Sunnis stopped supporting AQI and came over to the US side, it was because they made a clear choice to reject the AQI philosophy.
The Taliban was the extreme group that pushed Afghanistan into the dark ages intentionally. To say that there are moderate Taliban means that after being kicked out of Afghanistan by the US coalition in 2001, they have been living in terrible conditions for 7 and a half years, waging a ruthless guerrilla war, attacking civilians, ect, and all this while they were only moderately committed to the Taliban cause.
The only moderate Taliban were the ones that surrendered in 2001 and got on with their lives.
That being said, I think all of the readers here can recognize a bad tactical move while still hoping that it might succeed. That’s the big difference between us and the liberals.

I’m glad to see that, apparently in retrospect, you are willing to agree that the Surge worked, but I would remind you that it was the Leaders of your Party (geez, what were their names? Harry something, I think a Nancy, a Hillary and, oh yeah, something Murtha, you know, low level types) who were declaring the War in Iraq “Lost” before, Hell, even as the Surge was being implemented?
Do you not have a clue as to how that might be detrimental to the Moral of our Troops and beneficial to the Enemy?

This is Obama showing that he has absolutely no clue, no imagination, and no ability where foreign affairs are concerned. He is co-opting the previous administration’s successful Iraq policy and attempting to apply it to something completely different. His failure will be legendary. Unfortunately, it will probably get a lot of good people killed in the process.
President Obama might just be one of the brightest and intelligent thinkers of modern times. Not to mention that he is arguably the most intelligent and well educated President that we have ever enjoyed. Please allow your thoughts and criticisms to be soundly rooted in research and appropriate afterthought and not just rhetoric and baseless hatred-rooted accusations and innuendos. I expect more of you.
