Midweek Open Thread
Happy Hump Day TAH! Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent season. Lent’s association with fasting contributed to Fat Tuesday or “Mardi Gras”, which was yesterday. If Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gets her way, many people would be “fasting” involuntarily.
Here’s your midweek open thread, enjoy.

Congratulations, you’ve been recorded on my veteran organization calendar as being MOT first.
Congrats Chief. The opening scenes for Gunsmoke distracted me. Too bad this 1st is only good for practicing/bragging rights. Best of luck on Fridays Weekend Open Thread FIRST attempt.
They say we supposed to give up something for Lent. I think I’ll give up giving a sh*t.
Thanks, 5th/77th FA, I appreciate that very much. Today’s was a practice run in preparation for the real deal, The First that will be recorded in The Book of Firsts which will some day find its way into the Library of Congress. Thanks again and a good week to all and be safe.
Gunsmoke, that ain’t the story I been hearing, word down here in the far depth’s is you were on 3rd lower level chow hall, in the cavern behind the kitchen, rolling dice with EX, AW, Hondo and a couple others and lost all today’s winnings and gave them an IOU for a weeks KP duty that you signed my name on and they expect me to report at 2 am for duty. Ought to know better than to play dice with ex and H as they slip in loaded dice every now and then to try and beat each other. Now if you don’t mind I gotta go to bed as have to get up at 2 am to start washing dishes.
3rd? I’ll take it if so..😎
Third comment and Honorary First once again.
(((OVER))))
I posted this on the Statist thread, but it works here too I think…

Saw that over there BCD, was a good read. Again, what we have discussed here on many a time, the lack of history that is taught these days. Not just American History, but World History. In the grand scheme of things, Stalin and Hitler actions happened last month. Our congress critters are so eat up with their self important egotistical selves and do not realize they would be the first stood against the walls or sent to the Gulag. Less than 20 years ago we watched as muslimes drove airplanes into buildings and now we are electing them to run our country.
Be waiting to see if Larsie Boi will stop by, read this article and then seagull it all up. I volunteered years ago to “kill a commie for Mommy.” I may not be serving now, but that Oath I took is still in effect.
I read Robert Conquest’s “The Great Terror” and Anne Applebaum’s “Red Famine”. In the process of reading her book “Gulag”. The young adults today have no conception of how evil The Evil Empire was.
It works here too.
Happy Wednesday. Friday’s coming!
But only after Thursday is for cooking and we get the pickle recipe and the watermelon rind recipe.
Bet you thought we forgot, betcha, betcha!
It’s early for pickling anything, but if that’s what you want, that is what you will get. 🙂
Take any recipes I can get. Just happened to remember your post and OWB’s post on the pickles and watermelon rind. Mama used to do both, but those recipes are long gone with her. She also did pickled peaches, pears and plums, sweet and sour. Good stuff.
Your Thursdays are for cooking posts may not get the comment count or attention to detail that AW1Ed’s gun pr0n gets, but I’d venture to say they get read over and used more than the pr0n does. They guys that DO cook (and there is a bunch of us) use the recipes, and the ones that don’t will most assuredly show them to the cook in the family. And if they are not….???Well, it’s their loss. Dumbazzes.
Watermelon Rind Pickle recipe will have to wait – been several minor emergencies around here which demanded attention instead of searching for that recipe.
Be advised that it is not a quick thing. Takes a couple of days to accomplish and is rather labor intensive. But nothing at all difficult, just a lot of steps.
“Norfolk-“Based Sailor Used Military Discount To Buy Guns And Resell Them — Sometimes To Criminals:” https://pilotonline.com/news/local/crime/article_82cf9f7a-3ea1-11e9-9b4e-4f7805b7d9d7.html “Using his military discount, a Norfolk-based sailor bought and resold 23 firearms for profit, according to court documents.” “Many of Petty Officer 3rd Class Julio Fernando Pino’s customers? Criminals.” “Pino, who was honorably discharged from the Navy in December, was sentenced Monday to 2½ years in prison.” “The defendant bought and re-sold firearms so many times that, unsurprisingly, he sold some firearms to prohibited people, including a juvenile, a drug-addicted armed robber, a drug dealer trafficking in stolen firearms and many others,” Assistant U.S. Attorney William B. Jackson said in court documents.” “According to court documents, Pino’s scheme stretched from Nov. 6, 2015 through January 21, 2017. Prosecutors said he illegally engaged in the business of dealing firearms without being a licensed dealer.” “In all, Pino, now 26, purchased at least 60 firearms during that time before advertising them on http://www.VAguntrader.com and http://www.armslist.com.” “Court documents outline one particular sale of a .40-caliber Glock Model 23, which he purchased March 12, 2016, from the Marine Corps Exchange in Norfolk. The original sale price was $439.99.” “In the process, he signed a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives form in which he said he was the actual buyer and transferee of the weapon even though he had no plans to keep it, documents said.” “Less than three hours after the purchase, a potential buyer responded to an advertisement for the weapon. Later that day, he sold it to the person for $550, documents said.” “Assistant Federal Public Defender Keith Kimball said his client tried to be careful about who he sold the firearms to, but obviously failed.” “Mr. Pino has no criminal history and did not seek to put guns in the hands of people who would use them to commit crimes,” he said, lamenting how his client now realizes he exercised “extremely poor judgment.” “Regarding a Dec. 16, 2015 gun sale in Maryland that involved a 16-year-old boy, Kimball said his client didn’t know the buyer’s age at the time.” “Jackson countered that ATF… Read more »
MOney, money, money – the root of all stupid things.
What a freaking idiot. Folk like him is what gives swabbies a bad name. “Had planned to make the Navy a career”. Dahell, he was recently discharged in Dec? Now he committed this(these) crime(s) while on active duty and prosecuted by civilians. Did he get discharged because of this action or just as a routine ETS? Or did the Navy just decide to let the civvies handle it to give NCIS and JAG a break?
Either way, looks like his career plans now may include asking “Would you like fries with that?” or “Welcome to Walmart, would you like a buggy?”
rolltideroll/how’boutthemdawgs/goarmybeatnavy
It's like that article are posted a few days back, about the two soldiers and selling weapons. The active-duty soldier lost sight of the bigger picture, as well as of the long-term, for a short-term financial gain.
What a colossal dumbass. They catch him and warn him, REPEATEDLY, and he continues doing it. Why? He deserves more time in prison than that!
On a side note, we told one of my partners that he was going to get in trouble with the ATF for dealing guns because he bought a lot and sold them a short time later for various reasons. He was safe though, because he almost always sold them at a loss. 😂

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-pol-ocasio-cortez-afghanistan-mistake-sept-11-story.html
“New York’s high-flying Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dropped a startling social media bomb Tuesday, arguing that not only was the post-9/11 war on Afghanistan a “mistake,” but that “non-intervention” might have been an appropriate answer to the terrorist attacks…”
OK, we got a freshman (sic) congress critter who was, what, 12 yo when 9/11 happened. Since then the only thing she has done was get elected as a congress critter, albeit, with a lot of outside help. This makes her an expert on not only, foreign policy, but also the Art of War? Odd that this revelation comes out right after she is in the headlines for potential graft and corruption charges. Give me a break.
I will be the first to vote to bring our boys and girls home. 2nd guess a decision made 17 years ago? Not so much.

But, but, our commie cuttlefish thinks she is the smartest politico in the District of Criminals, except for his other Marxist hero, Bolshevik Bernie.

“The last squadron, Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, is located at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, about 45 miles outside of Jacksonville, N.C. The squadron has only two Prowlers left, according to the Marine Corps.”
“The EA-6B Prowler is a tactical jamming aircraft for the Navy and Marine Corps that began its service in 1971, according to Northrop Grumman’s website. The aircraft was first deployed to Southeast Asia in 1972…”
The end of an era and the end of a very serviceable platform. Didn’t they have a very non PC and derogatory term for this model at one time? Gold/gilt lined cockpits to protect against EMP?
Hope the ’35 has as long and as successful run.
Sailors have non-PC and derogatory terms for just about everything, 5/77, but in this case you’re thinking of the gold plated EA-6B Queer. The gold film on the canopy completes a Faraday cage around the crew for protection from the fierce radiation emitted by the aircraft’s jammers.

“School Lessons Targeted By Climate Change Doubters”:
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/article227176779.html
“A Connecticut lawmaker wants to strike climate change from state science standards. A Virginia legislator worries teachers are indoctrinating students with their personal views on global warming. And an Oklahoma state senator wants educators to be able to introduce alternative viewpoints without fear of losing their jobs.”
“As climate change becomes a hotter topic in American classrooms, politicians around the country are pushing back against the near-universal scientific consensus that global warming is real, dire and man-made…”
If we eat more burgers, steaks and orast (beef), that will decrease the number of cows farting and we can reduce the amount of green house gases escaping from the north end of south bound cows.
Problem solved. I’ll have mine medium rare with taters….Buttered with cheese.
“near-universal scientific consensus”
Why do they keep pushing this bullshit line? Makes it seem like anyone who thinks anthropogenic global warming isn’t proven are some sort of fringe group.
I love AOC … she is like a really bad case of the clap!
Keeps on giving.
Someone replied to one of my friends on Facebook, described AOC as one of the smartest, most intelligent people, elected to Congress. 🙄
CNN did a focus group of AOC fanboys and fangirls:
https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/06/politics/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-focus-group-cnntv/index.html
“I don’t feel like she’s playing games. I’m so excited about her. She’s smart. She’s intelligent and I cannot wait to see what else she does,” Reaman said.
Good God these people are even dumber than she is. I hope they’re right and she is the future of the party. We can finally get rid of the party of slavery, segregation, the KKK, and Jim Crow.
This is assuming that the conservatives are willing to stick together, and distribute the “red pill” to as many fence sitters as possible. Other things have to come into play as well.
The Democratic Party has been shifting further left over the past few decades, and so has the left in this country. There is an article out talking about how there is a healthy percentage of Millennials that don’t think that socialism is a “bad” idea.
AOC unseated an incumbent, and then went on to defeat the opposition in the main race to get her seat. Many didn’t think that was possible. But again, many didn’t think that the last president would’ve been able to win. I’ve been tracking the news since 1982, the last president would have dropped out of the primaries had the media of the last decade been like the media of the 1980s.
But, things have changed. Also, the existence of the GOP keeps the far left, and not so far left, in close ranks.
We just have to keep providing the red pills (facts debunking the leftist narrative), like what we do over here in response to a certain Berkeley graduate.
I’m sure that AOC will keep coming back like a vase of Herpes!
Bernie will make sure everybody gets fed…
Wouldn’t hurt his ass to go hungry for about a month.
Keep in mind this was 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 he was kicked out of the hippy commune for being lazy and a distraction to the other Commies.

“Whole Foods Cuts Workers’ Hours After Amazon Introduces Minimum Wage”:

” In response to public pressure and increasing scrutiny over the pay of its warehouse workers, Amazon enacted a $15 minimum wage for all its employees on 1 November, including workers at grocery chain Whole Foods, which it purchased in 2017.”
“All Whole Foods employees paid less than $15 an hour saw their wages increase to at least that, while all other team members received a $1 an hour wage increase and team leaders received a $2 an hour increase.”
“But since the wage increase, Whole Food employees have told the Guardian that they have experienced widespread cuts that have reduced schedule shifts across many stores, often negating wage gains for employees.”
“My hours went from 30 to 20 a week,” said one Whole Foods employee in Illinois.”
“Workers interviewed for this story were reluctant to speak on the record for fear of retaliation…”
Wally World did basically the same thing for their people when they got busted awhile back. Very very few of them get a 40 hour week. There are jobs in these industries with the K Rogers and the Publixs of the world that do take care of them employees.
Get a real skill, get a real job. Good employers are screaming for good employees.

Mother refuses to take unemployed daughter to her yoga class. The daughter gets mad and throws the phone at her mother. Her mother was bleeding bad. The mother used the same phone to call the police.
From the Daily Mail:

We don’t know the whole history here, but 30 yo, unemployed and still living at home? Maybe if Mom and Dad had of popped her on her butt a time or two 25 years ago, she might not of had a cell phone upside the head.
Someone here previously mentioned how a woman got her husband’s remains back missing some organs. This was in a foreign country. Well, someone has allegedly been engaged in that in the United States.
A pathologist accused of harvesting organs, illegally, from deceased children.
From The San Diego Union-Tribune:

Harvesting organs. Grrrrr… That is what is happening in the abortion business a lot of times.
Next thing you know it will be harvesting from terminal patients. And not so much voluntarily as in organ donors today.

“Happy Hump Day TAH! Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent season”
Get bent for Lent.
Old Sunday School saying.
I’m going to Hell.
I’m a big fan of Alex Trebek and the game show Jeopardy. Prayers goes out to him and his family:
“Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek Says He’s Been Diagnosed With Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer”:
https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/jeopardy-host-alex-trebek-says-hes-been-diagnosed-with-stage-4-pancreatic-cancer
“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek revealed in a YouTube video Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.”
“Trebek, 78, learned of his condition this week, he said in the video.”
“Now normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working,” he said. “And with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”
“Taking a lighter note, Trebek then quipped that he’d have to recover in order to fulfill his hosting duties.”
“Truth told, I have to! Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host ‘Jeopardy!’ for three more years!” he said. “So help me. Keep the faith and we’ll win. We’ll get it done. Thank you.”
“He offered the update on his health, he said, to be “open and transparent” with fans of the TV show.”
“Trebek’s plan at this point is to at least work through and complete the show’s ongoing season, TMZ reported. The season typically runs through the end of July. He has hosted the show since 1984.”
“Jeopardy!” alum Ken Jennings, who won more consecutive games than any other contestant on the show, tweeted after the news surfaced.”
“I’ve said this before but Alex Trebek is in a way the last Cronkite: authoritative, reassuring TV voice you hear every night, almost to the point of ritual.”
Damn. I’ve been a fan of Trebek since he hosted “High Rollers” back in 1974.
If anybody can will themselves to beat pancreatic cancer, Alex Trebek has to be at the head of the list.
Prayers for Alex.
Amen…
Watched an interview of him where he disclosed that he studied Philosophy in college. When asked “what is your Philosophy?” He replied “Don’t never take no crap from no one”
I hurt myself laughing at that.
I’ve been watching Jeopardy since Art Fleming was the host and Don Pardo as the announcer with those “slide cards”…
Praying for a miracle for Mr. Trebek. He added character and humor to the show. Just can’t figure out who would be an adequate replacement for him. (Definitelly not Will Farrel).
Please get well, Mr. Treback.Your fans need you.
My kid is in NY this week. She overheard someone say that AOC is “brilliant”. I told her to put on her MAGA hat and ask that person if they knew who was going to get the 3 billion dollars….
There ARE good people out there: “A Pioneering WWII Vet Died Alone. But She’ll Get a Hero’s Farewell.”: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article226817444.html “In her 97 years, Bertha Dupre served in World War II, rode the rails for Amtrak and, in her 80s, became a full-time student at UNC Charlotte.” “But she died alone in December, with no family left to claim her body. That gnawed at a growing number of volunteers she never knew in life but who will take her to a final rest.” “The more we learned about Ms. Dupre, we put our minds together and said we’re going to make this special. We would give her the burial she deserves,” said Russ Roakes, a funeral director at Powles Staton Funeral Home in the Rowan County town of Rockwell.” “Word of Dupre’s passing at a Concord nursing home came from a Cabarrus County veteran services officer. She asked whether Powles Staton, which specializes in services for veterans, could help. Roakes and his colleague in a family-owned business, Andrea Lefko of Carolina Cremation in Salisbury, went to work.” “Dupre raised a stepson, but he couldn’t be located at her death, they learned. Neither could a sister who was also in her 90s.” “Dupre grew up in Pennsylvania and joined the War Department as a clerk and typist when war broke out, according to a 2008 Observer article on Dupre. She later joined what would become the Women’s Army Corps, and her battalion became the only all-black unit deployed to Europe in World War II.” “The U.S. military was still segregated at that point, and black WACs were not supposed to be sent overseas. But the mail in Europe was piling up, so the Army deployed 800 women, many of them hand-picked for the assignment.” “They were, the battalion’s commander later recalled according to a Defense Department history, “the best WAC unit ever sent into a foreign theater. … The eyes of the public would be upon us, waiting for one slip in our good conduct or performance.” “In England, and later in France, the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion… Read more »
Thanks for the story. Absolutely, a wonderful woman along with her WWII unit.
Rest in peace, Ms. Dupre.
Thank you for your kind words, Ex-PH2.
Ms. Dupre volunteered to serve our country during WWII despite her race and gender.
If you ever have the opportunity, please read thr inspriting book “One Woman’s Army, a Black Officer Remembers The Wac” by Charity Adams Earley. She served from 13 July1942 to 26 March 1946 and was discharged with the rank of LTC, the highest rank below that of the WAC Director. She, too, served with the 6888th Central Postal Diectory Battalion overseas.
She passed away in 2000 and is buried in Dayton, Ohio.

“Remember the Alamo: Anniversary of Final Day of Battle”:
https://kristv.com/news/state-news/2019/03/06/remember-the-alamo-anniversary-of-final-day-of-battle/
“Today marks the anniversary of the final Battle of the Alamo.”
“In 1836, the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, fell as Mexican forces led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna stormed the fortress after a 13-day siege, between February 23, 1836 – March 6, 1836.”
“The battle claimed the lives of all the Texan defenders, nearly 200 strong, including William Travis, James Bowie and Davy Crockett.”
“The 13 days gave General Sam Houston time to build and develop his Texan Army at San Jacinto who were motivated by the courage shown, against all odds, by their fellow Texans.””
“The battle cry of “Remember the Alamo” spurred the small number of Texan soldiers to fight the large Mexican Army.”
“The Texans defeated Santa Anna’s Army and Texas won it’s independence from Mexico, becoming the Republic of Texas on April 21, 1836.”
TCM just ran a movie starring Clark Gable in which Austin was a hard day’s ride from Monument Valley and almost every gun was an 1858 Remington or 1860 Colt. Took place in 1846…
David, that is hilarious! Thank you for sharing!
Back in the dark ages when Gene, Roy and a lot of those other good guys were taming the west on the big screen, in black and white, they would pull their six shooter out and fight to hold off a bunch Native Americans and fire 15 or more shots without ever reloading one time. Them there fancy chrome six shooters held more bullets than a M-16 long clip.
Family lore has it that Claiborne Wright, who died there, was a gggrandfather. He had left Alabama in ’35 going out to get a land grant from the Mexican Government. Was at the FIRST Battle for the Alamo when it was captured from Gen Cos, and just kind of hung around with most of the other volunteers cause it was winter time. Most of the men that died in that broken down church really didn’t want to die there. What if Bowie had of followed Houston’s orders to spike/bury the artillery, blow the “fort” up and beat feet? Would Houston have been able to rally enough troops and spread Santa Anna out enough to win at San Jancinto? What if Fannin had of followed orders or the pleas from Travis to come to their aid? We’ll never know.
A Georgia Girl, Joanna Troutman of Knoxville, Crawford County Georgia, made the FIRST Lone Star Flag, presented it the Georgia Volunteers marching with Fannin to Texas. Light Blue with a single white star. This flag was shot up by fire during the Goliad skirmishing.
