Virginia State Police boss says troopers won’t go door-to-door collecting guns: ‘Very un-American’
Hundreds rallied at the Virginia Capitol Saturday against a bill that would ban assault weapons sales, now awaiting Gov. Spanberger’s signature.

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Jeffrey Katz wants Virginia gun owners to know police are not and will not come for their guns.

Col. Katz addressed what he called “recent online sentiment” which indicated Virginia passed laws to prompt police to go door-to-door to collect firearms from Virginians.

“I want to speak to this clearly and plainly. There is no legislative proposal seeking to do this, and there will not be,” Katz said in a statement published to the Virginia State Police Facebook page. “VSP works each day to enhance safety and protect civil liberties. Those liberties were not granted by government and will not be impeded by government. Not now, not ever. Activity of this nature is, by its very nature un-American.”

The entire bill is by it’s very nature is un-American Col. Obvious. What will he do when the esteemed legislature makes him a liar?

If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 50 years ago, a liberal 25 years ago, and a racist today.

It would seem that the citizens of VA need to start burning up the e-mail lines to their reps and make it clear how they dislike antigun legislation. They also need to wake the hell up and pay attention to the morons running for office.

Northern New England is blockaded on the south by Mass. and on the west by NY. That was bad enough but now if one wishes to travel to Florida you will have to deal with Virginia. I have stayed many times in Virginia on my travels to our home in Florida as well as on our return. This last trip south we stopped in West Virginia at a very nice Hampton Inn. We went to Nashville for a couple nights and had a lot of fun there including our first time at the Opry. Then on to the sunshine state.Virginia is looking more and more like Commie for Mia.

I’ll bet he got tired of New York’s firearms restrictions.

Everything north of the Occoquan is truly NOVA, AKA DC’s southern provinces, but now that the Express Lanes extend down to Fredericksburg, it’s only a matter of time. I lived in Stafford, right off the Garrisonville exit. If the final few miles were backed up, I could jump off at Quantico and cut through the training area, and I usually just hit Route 1 if I wasn’t in the commuter van.

It always amused me that the VA Welcome Center on I-95 South is at the Rappahannock in Fredericksburg. It’s almost like whoever planned it didn’t want to claim anything further north as VA.

Virginia’s been wishy washy on gun laws for decades. While they’ve mostly been considered gun friendly, I realized exactly how not-quite-so gun friendly they truly are when I moved to the Pelican State. Down here I can buy however many handguns I can afford at any given time, instead of the one-a-month policy VA has. Also, VA is a point-of-contact state, requiring a separate VSP form to be filled out (in addition to the 4473), with the State Police running the background check. I’ve gotten a Delay with NICS a few times, which is remotely annoying as it usually takes a few days to turn into a Proceed, but VA seemed to put me in a Delay status 90% of the time, usually calling the store back within an hour or two. If anything, that was more annoying, because it seemed like I was just flagged as someone whose time could be wasted. I always waited around because the couple of times I left years ago (before cell phones were common) I’d get home and be told I missed a call saying my gun was ready for pickup. As for VSP, in my highly subjective opinion, they’re as politicized as an LE agency can get. Hell, most of the departments in NOVA are as well. It was a VSP Trooper who charged me with having concealed weapons nearly 30 years ago, despite me telling him I had guns. He was right, by letter of the law, but you’d think a cop would give a naive 18-year-old kid some slack. Then he went on to lite to the court about the magazine capacity and tell the judge that he saw no need for a civilian to own such an assault weapon. It’s telling when there’s a federal Assault Weapon Ban in place and both the Commonwealth’s “premier” LE agency and the judge base testimony and judgment solely on a gun’s appearance. I did eventually get my Taurus 85 back–you know, the gun that would make sense to be convicted of appealing–after the Trooper dragged his feet for months. The pistol-grip Mossy… Read more »

Oh yeah, and as for the gun-friendly stuff: I got my VA CCW permit twice. The first time took nearly the full 45 days, while the second surprised me by arriving in the mail within three weeks. Regardless, each was a 5-year permit that I paid full price for. Louisiana’s constitutional carry went into effect for veterans the same month I moved back down here, expanding to include everyone 18 and over a couple of years later. I finally got off my butt and got my CCW permit last year: a Lifetime permit cost me exactly $0 since I’m a vet, and it showed up in my LA Wallet app the day after I applied, with the physical permit arriving within a few days.

Finally, “appealing” in the penultimate sentence of the previous rambling should be “concealing”. I was found “not guilty” of concealing that from the get-go, but when I appealed the court’s decision on that common shotgun evil assault weapon of mass destruction, the Trooper took it on himself to bring the Mossy to court as evidence in order to show the judge how deadly it was. It had a pistol grip and 18″ barrel with heat shield. Outside of being more compact, it was no different than the 28″ barreled guns people had just put away after deer season. I guess my mind was stuck on the fact that my ill-fated appeal actually netted me both jail time and a stiffer fine over my initial suspended sentence.
