FIRST!!

5th/77th FA

Keep practicing Skyjumper. Friday WOT is only 2 days out now. Maybe it will warm up enough so my clock will advance and the keyboard will thaw out.

I would recommend you get a ruling on what a MOT FIRST is worth, but you really don’t want that humiliation. You do have my congrats.

Skyjumper

I wasn’t really trying to be first 5th/77th FA, but just came in from outside and my fingers where shaking so bad from the cold (- 46 with wind chill here in Cheese Head land) that one of my near frozen digits just accidentally tapped “FIRST!!”.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. 😉

RM3(SS)

I know the feeling! It’s a frigid 66° here in the land of fruits and nuts. It’s not much but it is some small compensation for the insane politics here.

I’m on vacation, so that’s nice. My Mother-In-Law collapsed yesterday and had to be transported, which scared the hell out of us, but they released her after a few hours. Food poisoning.

Hope your week improves.

It’s a good week, they’re mostly all good weeks these days.

AOC might not be Maduro’s daughter but she’s certainly Bernie’s apostle.

Watching her detonate heads in DC has been entertaining, especially as she tries to stick it to the Democratic Leadership…long known for their tolerance for new ideas and outsiders. Just ask her mentor Bernie how well the Democrats tolerate non-corporatists amongst the pure.

She’s cute, isn’t she? Kind of like a Tasmanian devil – as long as you don’t let them get near your fingers, you’re okay.

Just gotta love all the Dems excoriating the rich. Have to wonder how many of them will get told to go piss up a rope by the richest seven folks in the US -all Democrats- after all this talk of 70-90% taxes on the ultrawealthy.

On this date in history, 30JAN:

1945 – US Army Rangers and Filipino guerrillas executed a flawless rescue of 486 POWs from Camp Cabanatuan north of Manila. The Raid at Cabanatuan, also known as The Great Raid, was a rescue of Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and civilians from a Japanese camp near Cabanatuan City, in the Philippines. On January 30, 1945, during World War II, United States Army Rangers, Alamo Scouts, and Filipino guerrillas liberated more than 500 from the POW camp. After the surrender of tens of thousands of American troops during the Battle of Bataan, many were sent to a Cabanatuan prison camp following the Bataan Death March. The Japanese transferred most of the prisoners to other areas, leaving just over 500 American and other Allied POWs and civilians in the prison. Facing brutal conditions including disease, torture, and malnourishment, the prisoners feared they would all be executed as General Douglas MacArthur and his American forces returned to Luzon. In late January 1945, a plan was developed by Sixth Army leaders and Filipino guerrillas to send a small force to rescue the prisoners. A group of over a hundred Rangers and Scouts and several hundred guerrillas traveled 30 miles (48 km) behind Japanese lines to reach the camp. In a nighttime raid, under the cover of darkness and a distraction by a P-61 Black Widow, the group surprised the Japanese forces in and around the camp. Hundreds of Japanese troops were killed in the 30-minute coordinated attack; the Americans suffered minimal casualties. The Rangers, Scouts, and guerrillas escorted the POWs back to American lines. The rescue allowed the prisoners to tell of the death march and prison camp atrocities, which sparked a new rush of resolve for the war against Japan. The rescuers were awarded commendations by MacArthur, and were also recognized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A memorial now sits on the site of the former camp, and the events of the raid have been depicted in several films.

Very timely HMC Ret.

Just finished reading the book “Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of World War II’s Greatest Rescue Mission” a couple of weeks ago.

Great read, amazing story but totally blown away by the amount of atrocities committed by the Japanese.

While the death rate in German POW camps was 4%, the death rate in Japanese POW camps was 27%.

A Proud Infidel®™

There is “The Knights of Bushido” which chronicles Japanese War Crimes and “The Scourge of the Swastika” which chronicles what the Germans did, both are good reading!

Just three years later Nathuram Godse would kill Ghandi, ostensibly due to Ghandi’s desire to work with Muslims to create a unified India. Godse found Ghandi’s ideas as too complacent regarding Islam and disliked Ghandi’s pretense of a monopoly on the truth.

Godse and his collaborator Apte would hang in November of 1948 for their parts in the assassination.

A subtle reminder that speaking unpopular ideas to a crowd not desiring to hear them is never a very safe path to pursue.

Combat Historian

Five weeks later, Third Army set up a company-sized armored task force commanded by CPT Abe Baum to rescue the POWs of Oflag XIII near Hammelburg fifty miles behind the German lines. It…did not end as well.

Note: Some historians have stated that Patton ordered the Hammelburg raid because he knew his son-in-law (captured in North Africa in 1943) was interned in the camp. Patton himself denied knowing this. I will leave it at that…

I’ve finally succumbed to the wife’s constant whining about my advancing years and bought a snowblower. For years the shoveling was something I enjoyed a great deal.

Outside in the fresh, cold New England air…working up a sweat…

After using the new machine a couple times this year, I should have purchased one twenty years ago. Made really short work of the 8 inches of light powder we got up here last night, and a week ago Sunday made it really easy to clear the foot of snow…probably a third of the time it would have taken to shovel.

Am going to bring up Nathan Phillips again (AKA Nathan Alan Phillips, Nathan Richard Phillips), Native American Indian, who embellished his Marine Corps Military service time…

Jesse Watters of “Watters World”, FOX News, did am excellent 4 minute video that addressed the Facts about Phillips. It is worth watching.

“The Media has turned a Blind Eye to the Native American Activist’s hatred, lies and past after the Covington Catholic Confrontation.”

I’ve been messing with my friend that lives in the lower 48 and is experiencing this cold snap. Lines like “Do you know what we call -15 degrees here? We call it October”. I’m also reminding him that I live a 4 hour drive away from the Arctic Circle and it is warmer here than it is there.

In all seriousness, for those of you in this unusual (for your areas) cold snap stay warm. Keep clothing loose and in layers. Don’t touch anything outside with bare hands. If you do you can get contact frostbite instantly. Wear contact gloves. Those really thin wool ones work well for that, just don’t wear them as your only gloves.

They are sick. So now the Dems in VA join their brethren in New York in thinking it’s OK to kill an unwanted baby even after it’s been born alive. WTF?

rgr769

To be fair, they are proposing changing their law so that is okay to kill the baby provided it is not all the way out of the birth canal. Also, if you kill a pregnant woman who hasn’t yet delivered, it I only one homicide and not two.

USMCMSgt (Ret)

Then they need to modify the criminal statute.

Virginia Statute 18.2-71.1: “Any person who knowingly performs partial birth infanticide and thereby kills a human infant is guilty of a Class 4 felony”.

Virginia law defines a “human infant” to be a product of human conception that has been completely or substantially expelled or extracted.

To add, that proposed law conflicts with existing law (i.e. The willful, deliberate and premeditated killing of a pregnant woman by one who knows that the woman is pregnant and has intent to cause the involuntary termination of the woman’s pregnancy at birth.

YMMV

Starting in October 2020, Virginians boarding domestic flights will need to show a REAL ID Card to board.

Folks in Virginia who are Active Duty or Retired as well as DoD Civilians can still their Military ID Card or CAC Card if they choose not to get the REAL ID Card. This includes Dependents:

https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/#real_faqs.asp

https://www.dhs.gov/real-id

If a Virginian does not obtain a REAL ID Card by 2020 and do not have an Active Duty or Retiree Military ID Card or CAC Card, then they can use the following to board an aircraft:

“The Transportation Security Administration indicates that it will accept the following identification documents:”

U.S. passport

U.S. passport card

DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)

Permanent resident card

Border crossing card

Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)

This pertains to all 50 States.

At the end of the day, a cliché walks into a bar — fresh as a daisy, cute as a button, and sharp as a tack. A run-on sentence walks into a bar it starts flirting. With a cute little sentence fragment. Falling slowly, slowly falling, the chiasmus collapses to the bar floor. A figure of speech literally walks into a bar and ends up getting figuratively hammered. An allusion walks into a bar, despite the fact that alcohol is its Achilles heel. The subjunctive would have walked into a bar, had it only known. Hack Stone

As to (see what Hack did there?) the Jussie Smollett attack incident, Hack Stone consulted his Magic 8 Ball, and he is now confident to make the following predictions:

1. After approximately one week, a senior member of the Chicago Police Department will release the following statement; “After an extensive investigation, we are unable to substantiate the claim that Mr. Smollett was assaulted the morning of January 29, 2019 in the vicinity of of 300 E North Water St between 1:00 and- 3:00 AM. This does not mean that this assault did not occur, but we cannot establish that the events occurred when and where as described. The Chicago Police Department requests that anyone who may have information to contact us immediately.”

2. Shortly afterward, a spokesperson for Jussie Smollett will release a statement stating that Jussie Smollett has checked himself into an undisclosed hospital to be treated for “exhaustion”.

3. Producers of Empire will release a statement saying that Jussie Smollett will temporarily be leaving the show to take care of personal issues, and they wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his returning from the show.

4. This will all get swept under the rug, and somehow it will all be Donald Trump’s fault.

Mason

Reading that story last night. No way that actually happened.

rgr769

It must be true. There he was at 2:45 a.m. in 15 degree temps with a noose around his neck. And in his second version of what happened, his assailants were wearing MAGA hats and screamed: “This be MAGA country, yo bitch-ass ni**ah.” This is clearly all Trump’s fault. If there were no MAGA hats, there would be no assaults against black men in Shotcago.

rgr769

The Shotcago PD has just admitted that after reviewing hours of security camera CCTV tapes there is only one minute when Jussie whathisname was off camera when the claimed assault could have occurred. Also, the two unidentifiable persons who appear on video released by the coppers are reported by a neighborhood watch group to have walking in the opposite direction where Jussie claims his attack occurred. Another interesting factoid: Jussie claims he was on his cell phone with his manager when the attack supposedly occurred, yet neither of them called 911. Jussie didn’t call 911 until over 40 minutes after he said the “hate crime” occurred. I am calling bullshit, fake news and a fake hate crime. Looks like a Munchausen’s fake hate crime.

In 1991, a woman and her 13-year old daughter were sexually assaulted and murdered. Police eventually made an arrest and the assistant prosecutor obtained a conviction. The defendant shouted, “I didn’t do it!” when the verdict came in back in 1995. He went to prison. The years past: 10, 15, 20. And guess what? He hadn’t done it. DNA evidence established that another man was responsible. He was released and the prosecutor stated there would be no attempt to retry him. He wasn’t guilty. What he shouted out in the courtroom was indeed true. So, how did this happen? An unscrupulous lawyer who withheld exculpatory evidence, that’s how. His name you may recall. If any served in the Blue Water Navy during VN, this applies to you, and it’s good news. I hope this benefits some of you buttwipes: Court rules VA must pay disability benefits to ‘blue water’ Vietnam veterans By: Leo Shane III   1 day ago WASHINGTON — A federal court ruled Tuesday that the Department of Veterans Affairs cannot deny disability benefits to thousands of Vietnam veterans who claim exposure to cancer-causing chemical defoliants simply because those vets served in the waters off the country’s coastline, and not inland. The ruling marks a major victory for so-called “blue water” Navy veterans who have fought the department for years over the denials. VA officials have said the existing scientific evidence doesn’t justify the presumption of toxic exposure for the group and have strongly opposed legislative efforts to overturn their decision. But the 9-2 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturns past court opinions backing up VA, saying that Congress never intended to exclude servicemembers in the seas around Vietnam when they awarded presumptive benefits for certain illnesses related to Agent Orange exposure. Lawmakers hope for swift action this year on ‘blue water’ Vietnam veterans benefits Both leaders of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee are trying to revive the legislative effort that stalled last month. Under current department rules, the blue water veterans can receive medical care for their illnesses through VA. But to receive disability benefits — worth up to several thousand dollars a month — they must prove that their ailments are directly connected to toxic exposure while on duty. That’s not the case for other Vietnam veterans, who are presumed to have been exposed to Agent Orange and other defoliants known to cause serious and rare cancers. So while a veteran who served on the shoreline could receive disability payouts after contracting Parkinson’s Disease or prostate cancer, another vet who served on a ship a few miles away would have to provide evidence of direct contact with hazardous chemicals. Advocates have said that, given the time that has passed since the war, obtaining… Read more »

2/17 Air Cav

Makes sense to me. If one cannot prove cause and effect, the presumption should be that it exists. Does this mean that some sailors will receive benefits that they should not? No doubt it does, but so does the cases involving the brown-water boys and the soldiers, airmen, and Marines who were on land.

rgr769

Riddle me this, 2/17. How does someone (a Vietnam veteran) who can’t possibly have ever come in contact with Agent Orange be presumed to have done so? If Lawn Dart Danny was still alive and had prostate cancer would it be presumed that his cancer was caused by Agent Orange? (I don’t recall any Ranch Hand ops on his aircraft carrier.) Cuz I fail to see how crewmen on carriers, cruisers, and other combatant ships ever came in contact with any defoliant on board ship. And sailors whose blue water ships docked in RVN ports didn’t go walk-about in defoliated jungle.
Also, last I heard, over a quarter of US males are likely to develop prostate cancer if they live into their 60’s. I know at least half a dozen guys in my age range or older who have developed prostate cancer and none of them, save one, ever served in the military. The one that did serve was stationed in the US & Germany. Are we just going to start presuming the impossible cuz it feelz good to give them these VA bennies?

2/17 Air Cav

Well, I understand your take and it’s not unreasonable PROVIDED that one the condition you lead with is established. The way I understand it is that there exists a rebuttable presumption that certain medical conditions occurring in any Vietnam Veteran be presumed to be chemically caused. That is not to say that showing the impossibility of that is barred, at least as I understand it.

I don’t have a problem with the presumption that a particular ailment was caused by exposure to Agent Orange. I have a problem with the presumption that because someone was somewhere in the theater of operations of the Vietnam War they were ispso facto exposed to Agent Orange. That is complete bunk. Over 98% of the men who even served on the ground in RVN were never exposed to Agent Orange because only a small portion of the country was sprayed with it. I spent about a week to ten days on the ground in an area that had been defoliated with it; that was the only time in my many weeks in the bush and overflying it I saw it. Once vegetation is sprayed with it, it turns brown, just like weeds sprayed with Roundup. If you weren’t in a line company or some other unit in a sprayed area, you weren’t exposed to it unless you were part of the spraying operation itself. There is no way crewmen on blue water ships were exposed to it at sea. So, I fail to see how there is anything unfair about what the VA has done re proof you were somewhere you were exposed to it.

OWB

There were indeed plenty of odd folks exposed to it in many conditions other than walking through it in the jungles. A former coworker who was a transportation officer (USAF) had all sorts of stories from his days on the assorted docks in Viet Nam – leaking barrels of the stuff. Everyone who handled any of that was most certainly exposed, and it is quite unlikely that it is documented anywhere.

Other friends worked on the aircraft and vehicles that transported it inland.

When you think of the opportunities for exposure that can never be proven, yet plenty of folks who can each testify that they saw dozens of unnamed troopers proximate to it you can understand why the blanket presumption was made.

How many of those leaking barrels ended up on Navy vessels for a ride from one port to another? Who all may have been exposed to it? Following the same logic, it may be entirely fair to cover the blue water guys as well.

It’s about time that those who were exposed to it are covered. You bet, I would prefer that only those with proven exposure to it be covered, but if it’s anything like the guys who died after DS/DS/DS from the crap they were exposed to waiting for treatment for something “they” say didn’t happen can be very deadly. I had a very dear friend die very painfully – he was far from a whiner, but he never got proper treatment simply because he could never discover just what sort of treatment he needed. His civilian docs tried many things, only to discover they were ineffective. Had they known to start with, his condition was treatable.

Really, so men who never set foot on the ground in RVN, but served on carriers, cruisers, etc. should collect VA benefits for prostate cancer, Parkinson’s or any number of other diseases when there is no conceivable way they were exposed to it just because it feelz good. And we are not talking about exposures in the middle east. If we are just going to hand out bennies to anyone with a Vietnam service medal, then I want my $3K per month.

“VA officials have insisted the total is closer to $5.5 billion”

That number, 5.5 billion. It keeps popping up in the news lately.

You Be The Judge.

Virginia Delegate Kathy Tran wants to prohibit spraying pestides from March to August to protect Fall Cankerworms. Her reason is Virginia birds need to have adequate food supply to live, i.e. the moths that evolve from these worms.

“Virginia Del. Kathy Tran Submitted Bill To Save Caterpillars On Same Day As Late-Stage Abortion Bill”:

https://dailycaller.com/2019/01/31/kathy-tran-caterpillars-same-day-abortion/

“The Democratic Virginia delegate who has recently come under fire for sponsoring a bill in the Virginia House of Delegates that would allow the termination of a pregnancy up to 40 weeks old, is also the chief patron of a bill that would protect the lives of “fall cankerworms” during certain months.

“Democratic Virginia Del. Kathy Tran introduced “House Bill No. 2495 – Fall cankerworm; spraying prohibited during certain months” on Jan. 9, the same day as “House Bill No. 2491 — Abortion; eliminate certain requirements.”

“Tran came under fire Tuesday for her support of legislation that would allow an abortion to be performed just moments before the birth of a child.”

Maybe someone in the Old Dominion needs to sponsor a bill to do away with Demon rat VA Del Kathy Tran. At the very least I make a motion for the deployment of the Continent of Insults. I know it is usually reserved for Valor stealing POSers. However, someone that is all for protecting moths and murdering babies may need ordnance expended.

Her and the guvanator was on the nasty news this pm. “You took what I said out of context.” I thought NE Sen Ben Sasse was gonna fall over.

Those trembles the people in VA are feeling are not earthquakes. It’s the Founders spinning in their graves.

I think she should donate all her organs and then take herself out. Think of all those poor peeps needing transplants who could benefit. Plus, there would be food for worms and birds eat worms.

Yeah, Kathy Tran is getting all the ridicule she deserves. She deleted her Twitter account shortly after and there’s a lot of backlash over this.

When asked if the bill permitted killing an infant at the moment of birth, she squirmed out an answer. It was obvious she was uncomfortable in having to give an answer.

Virginian’s deserve better representation than this.
