The Russians Now Have a Hypersonic Missile
I’m only posting this now, because Vlad Putin is Russian Orthodox and the Orthodox Church doesn’t celebrate Christmas until January. And that’s getting close. Vlad is pawing the ground and snorting. He can now claim a successful launch of a hypersonic missile (a/k/a a glide vehicle, per the story) as his ultimate answer to the US’s aggressive warmongering. Full story is at the link: https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/12/26/putin-oversees-hypersonic-weapon-test-says-its-invulnerable/
These days, I can’t figure out if he’s whistling Dixie in Russian or just yankin’ us because it’s fun for him to do so.
From the article: Speaking to Russia’s top military brass after watching the live feed of the launch of the Avangard vehicle from the Defense Ministry’s control room, Putin said the successful test was a “great success” and an “excellent New Year’s gift to the nation.”
The test comes amid bitter tensions in Russia-U.S. relations, which have sunk to their lowest level since the Cold War times over the conflict in Ukraine, the war in Syria and the allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Note the linkie thingie to another article in the middle of the missile test news, in which he says we’re threatening him with war. Here it is: https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/12/20/putins-ominous-warning-us-is-raising-threat-of-nuclear-war/
Oh, puh-lease! Yes, Vlad, I do know about Tsar Bomba, what it was like and its range. But that was the 1960s and this is a lot later. I lived through that. So did a lot of other people I know.
We are not the ones who want nuclear war. We have always seen nukes, et al., as deterrents, not weapons. We won’t start it, but by God, we will end it. We were glad the Cold War ended. You should have learned something from that.
Be careful what you wish for, Vlad. You might not like it.
Anyway, Schastlivogo Rozhdestva.
(My Cyrillic script didn’t work here, so it’s phonetic.)
Vlad is full of дерьмо. A successful flight demonstration is a test point, not a viable weapons system. If that thing had gone all ‘splody and left big grease spots in the sky do you think he’d be on TV gloating?
Compare that with our Navy’s SM-3 Block IIA ballistic missile intercept program. It’s test results- successes and failures- are open source and available to anyone who cares. It’s also extraordinarily more difficult to hit a mid-flight IRBM with another missile, than to fly a “shape” very fast. Vlad, and more importantly, Lil’ Kim, know this very well.
“If that thing had gone all ‘splody and left big grease spots in the sky do you think he’d be on TV gloating?”
Ummm, nope. Not a word from him would emanate from the Kremlin.
As I recall, Nikki Krushchev was the Premier of the USSR in October of 1961 when that Big Burper was detonated in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. There were strange noises in the press/media at that time. It was chilly weather. One year later, much warmer around the same time of that month.
This missile launch seems to have had some minor guidance issues. Viewed from a northern European county. Wonder who’s missile this was?
Is that an old picture?
Not especially. I just posted it this afternoon at 1640.
Google is your friend.

Ka-ching.
Oh, noes!!!!!
An intergalactic portal has opened in the sky!!!
We will all be transported to UGC65093 by Sunday morning to watch reruns of The Smurfs and PeeWee Hermione, and live on steak and nice, crispy fries!!!!
We are doomed!!! Doomed, I tell you!!!
Haven’t I seen that twisty corkscrew on other Russian missile trials before this one?
Thanks and Счастливого Рождества to you too!
*grin*
One of our ships also has an operational laser:
Oooooo! Video games!!!!
I love them!!!! Can I play, too?
Mmmmm, Rail Gun. Right down the road at Dahlgren NavSeaSysCom.
Metallic Viagra right there.
While putin was putin around, he played Guided Missles by the Cuff Links on Dootone 1956.
Does it work better than their wood fired carrier?
I think it runs on burning used tractor tires, but a wood back-up is certainly a possibility.
Note the ocean going tug in the distance to the port of Kuznetsov. Must be there in case the big ship needs a jump start.
In fact, it’s so ugly the only Russian dry dock big enough to hold it sank itself. With the carrier in it.
Russian aircraft carrier damaged in dry dock accident
RUSSIA’S only aircraft carrier is not a lucky ship. Prone to fires and breakdowns, it’s now been damaged by a collapsing crane.

Among the lessons learned in WWII, carrier operations are one of the biggest lessons.
Other than the British and Japanese no other country got the opportunity to learn the hard was about what happens when you launch aircraft off of and land on a tiny speck in the Pacific Ocean moving at 25 knots…
There is a huge and very steep learning curve on carrier operations and we paid for those lesson with the blood of the Airmen that flew hundreds of thousands of sorties from the decks of the American Fleet and Jeep Carriers.
The Flight Operations Center on the deck of a Nimitz Class Carrier is the most dangerous workspace in history and nothing will suffice to learn those lessons other than the blood of the men that look at those operations as the best way for them to serve their own countries…
But the U.S had Bernasty for a hyper sonic weapon years ago?
Yes, but he failed his flight test rather badly.
Hahahahhahahahahahaha!
Hey, he was only a complete failure on that last flight.
If you mean hyper sonic as VERY LOUD, then yes, Bernasty was a hyper sonic weapon.
this missile has been known for some time–going on 3 years now.
The hope seems to be that the speed will defeat anti missile systems.
To put that into perspective, the US tested several designs and has gone back to systems with less speed. That alone tells me that accuracy is likely an issue with such systems…
It could also mean that while the idea has merit, the tactical deployment and sustainment is suspect.
Vlad The Colluder is back at it again.
How many T14 Armata tanks do you have, Vlad?
All 3 of them?
Didn’t at least one of those T14’s break down during a Military Parade and had to be towed?
Ahh, but now they have Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Unmanned Systems (UAV, UGV, USV, and UUVs) so even if Vlad gets a cold and isn’t heard from for a while…Russia will return to the glory of the Soviet Union!
This is called sensationalism. Tell the Japanese this. No. It would end most of life on earth. That is exactly what we would end. The quality of this site has dropped dramatically since Jonn passed.
