Merry Christmas – Redux

| December 25, 2018

A paraphrased repeat from a year ago.

Well, once again we’re “enjoying” participating in that annual ritual called “Holiday Travel” – and it’s now Christmas Day. So I decided to repost what I thought was some appropriate Christmas music for our readers.

Yeah, the tune here was indeed written by one of the original hippies from the 60s – albeit one who did have at least a little common sense (see his tune “Taxman”). And yeah, the chorus is unrealistic and Polyannaish in the extreme.

But for a military audience, the sentiment is apropos; many of us know just how bad war can be, having seen it firsthand. And today the song just seems apropos. The version below is IMO even better than Lennon’s original.

Merry Christmas, all. Take care.

Merry Christmas Hondo!
I don’t know if your travels (in the black staff car with flags on the corners, full of HOT HONDO’S ANGELS) take you through Texas…but if they ever do, Buc-ees is a MUST STOP. I was at one last night. It’s a holiday tradition!

nobunny

Merry Christmas, Hondo. Safe travels.

(I posting a positive sentiment here to avoid the Cthulhu caused mess below.)

Dwight Schwarz

nobunny, was my fault as to posting my reaction to the music, will stop posting from now on so will not happen again.

Lurker Curt

Dwight, seems to be you were just using this as a forum to remember, as is appropriate with the music, time of year, and your experiences. Some folks (ahem) should keep their superior intellect to themselves.
Apologies to all for the way I responded- that was an emotional response to what I saw as someone poking their nose where it wasn’t needed.

SFC D

Wasn’t your fault, Dwight. I enjoyed your post and absolutely understood the sentiment behind it. I’m sorry that fuckin’ know it all had to take a dump on it. Merry Christmas to you, and welcome home.

nobunny

No way Dwight! Cthulhu is the asshole here.

Dwight Schwarz

Can’t comment right now, have to go and settle self down as to tune stirred memories of that time for many of us years ago.

Cthulhu

Merry Christmas.

Tallywhagger

Thank you! And you, as well.

War Is Over, for who I ask? The citizens who never were involved physically in one? Yes. Wars before WWI? Yes. Soon WWI will be over when the last veteran from it passes away. War is never over for veterans that served in one, yes we keep on with life such as we have. We live on through little things that happen to cause memories that suddenly surface for some unknown reason. Be it a song on the radio or like here a few months back, was starting to rain so was going out to close windows on auto’s here, opened front door and as I reached for screen door was a flash of bright lightening. Next thing that I remember is I found doors closed and I was almost in another room, why, well that is my problem and a memory from over 50 years ago. Keep getting told forget it as it is all in the past. Easy, maybe for you but for Veterans it is always there hidden in the deep areas of the past, and every day one of those Veterans who supposedly is over it has it surface and they once again enter the past they tried to bury. Forget it you repeat, many do every day and end the war by suicide, sorry been there twice long ago and failed and still here. try again sorry but suicide is no longer an answer for me. Get help, what from those who ran away and placed us in the drug using baby killers we were told to be group, yeah you bet, tried many years ago with VA, VFW, Legion, sorry but back then they had no want for us in any way. Now they all want us as they need bodies to fill their falling ranks but that is all they need. Yes finally joined VA a few years back but all they want to do is help by giving pills out and yes they help if you want to pass the rest of your life away sleeping. Family, yeah right, came back to… Read more »

Cthulhu

The last known living WWI veteran already passed in 2012. Though anyone with a conscious memory of a first hand experience of WWI might still be effected by it even if they were too young to serve. They would be at least 100 but might still be living.

Dwight Schwarz

Thank you for ruining another day for me here go back and stay in your hole as I am sure you think you know it all.

Cthulhu

How did that post ruin your day?

I didn’t even mention Santa Clause wasn’t real.

GDContractor

Cuntholio: it’s not the content of your post, it’s just the fact that you posted.

SFC D

Sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor. I know this is a foreign concept for you. Please, could you not be such a sexual intellectual today? Just 1 day.

HMC Ret

“The last known living WWI veteran already passed in 2012.”

There was no need for that line. I’m certain Dwight was aware of that. Give us a break, will you?

Dwight Schwarz

Admin please remove this post as my thoughts here were wasted.

Cthulhu

If it is bothering you that much admin can remove mine and leave yours.

I did not argue with your message that a war is not over until those that experience them have passed since they live wit the war for the rest of their lives.

I just extended your argument to anyone that experiences war first hand which includes civilians caught up in the war.

So while the last living veterans might have passed there might still be survivors of the war who were children at the time and thus the war is not over.

Lurker Curt

Merry Christmas, ya fuck wit. Dwight seemed to be venting, you seem to be showing off again. Kindly fuck off.

Tallywhagger

It has been many decades since I read it, possibly written by Herman Wouk or James Michener, that a war is not won until the occupied people change or adapt their language, diet and lifestyle to assimilate with the victors/captors.

Such matter helps to understand the viability and veracity of Jews over thousands of years.

“memory from over 50 years ago”

They hurt like hell on a day like this.
Go to war on Christmas and come home on Christmas.
Take care brother.

I was a kid when Vietnam ended. We lived near Fitzsimons Army Medical center. When the POWs came home many went there. My parents took us down there to welcome them home. So to all you Nam vets, Welcome home and Merry Christmas.

HMC Ret

The POWs were returned to the military hospital closest to their home of record or where their spouse/parent/whomever lived. Several came to Bethesda. I had the opportunity to perform nuclear medicine scans on all who came there. It was an honor to serve them. They were in bad shape.

Merry Christmas to all.

Sea Dragon

Enough of that! Merry Christmas to all.

Dustoff

Merry Christmas TAH, and to all that have/are serving. To my Dustoff Brothers and Sisters world wide, I wish you and your family’s all the best!

Dwight Schwarz

Yours is almost the most treacherous job there is. I have known two others who were involved in air med-evac from another time and place. Warren went in twice and brought his brother-in-law out of the field, sadly he passed a couple of years ago from ALS, My neighbor Gary was only involved for 3 months when his chopper was shot down, not sure as to the two they were bringing out survived but Gary was severely injured and rest of crew survived. He was in back and not strapped in. I commend you on your duty and Merry Christmas and Happy safe New Year.

Dustoff

Thank you Dwight. I’m not /was not a “high speed operator”, I was a garden variety Dustoff Medic. I didn’t catch the PTSD. I served, married, had a wonderful son. Came home started my civilian life , worked as a paramedic for 25 years and retired. I stand in awe of the young men and women who serve today, and look up to those who post on TAH. Merry Christmas to all.

So, I wonder where John Kerry is spending Christmas, this year. He’s not much of a navigator but electronic devices have done everything to make it possible for even someone as daft as Fonda-Kerry to have a fairly accurate idea where they are, Cambodia withstanding.

Bless his seered mind. Even three wise men found Jesus: Star of wonder, star of night…

MSG Eric

Merry Christmas and thanks for doing what you do here.

Please remember those that didn’t make it home, no matter what was done for them…
IED took Adam Wolff & two other Marines on June 20, 2014 in Iraq.
Godspeed to him and all the fallen of these seemingly endless wars…
