Goodbye, Old Friend
95-year-old Sen. Bob Dole stands to salute the late Pres. Bush.

He did have assistance, but he walked from his wheelchair a few steps and gave his salute. He is 95. They both had Parkinson’s. They are both World War II veterans.
Catch the tailwind. Mr. President.

Respect.
A very touching story, Ex-PH2.
Thank You for sharing.
A Salute to Robert Dole, who received the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and two Purple Hearts during WWII.
President George H.W.Bush received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his WWII service.
And LBJ received the Silver Star.
Go figure. You be the Judge.🤔

One of these is not like the others…
Honorable people would rather have an earned lesser award than a fake anything.
Perhaps Hondo can do a post on LBJ and his Silver Star…
Two EARNED the awards and respect that comes with those awards. One was a lowlife bully who conned his way into receiving the Silver Star, an award that is given only for extraordinary heroism. He took a plane ride and, PRESTO, here’s your Silver Star.
Fair winds and following seas President Bush.
I wonder how many of the past two generations know why Sen. Dole’s salute was with his left hand. Old warhorses.

You are so right.
And all LBJ had to show was his Gallbladder scar and his Silver Star Lapel pin.
Seeing two old warriors, one recently passed and the other, Senator Dole, nearing his time of passing, should make us give reflection. Each day fewer of that glorious generation are able to rise to the challenge. It’s really sad to see those old warhorses, one passed and one nearing his time.
Seeing these warriors I am more convinced we should have a mandatory term of service to country, whether it’s in the military, national parks, public works or whatever. There is no equity in some who devote decades to the nation and many of the more recent generation, whose idea of service to nation is rolling out of mommy’s bed in the basement by noon.
Saw the video of this on CBS last night. You could see the struggle Senator Dole went thru in his attempt to stand by himself. One warrior saluting another. Been really pleasantly surprised at the gushing coverage that CBS is giving President Bush’s passing. Makes one wonder what their ulterior motive is.
“And LBJ received the Silver Star.” Hey, after all, he did fly on an airplane with some combat troops on it. I flew on some airplanes with nuclear capable missiles. Should I have been awarded the MOH? /s/
Another example of demonrats upgrading their participation trophies. Is this where it all started?
God Speed and Fare Well Mr. President. Thank you for your service to our country. Peace be unto your family. And Thank You Senator Dole, for your show of honor and respect to your fellow warrior.
“I flew on some airplanes with nuclear capable missiles. Should I have been awarded the MOH?”
I jumped off the side of the ramp on a C-130.
Where’s my wings and loadmaster badge?
I flew the left seat of a Coast Guard C-130. The crew should have been awarded the DFC at least. I was an ET-1 at the time.
“their ulterior motive” is easily explained by “The only Good XXX is a dead XXX.”
Two great men from the greatest generation. God bless them.
I weep for this country. We’ve gone from The Greatest Generation to electing Crypto-marxists.
We’re doomed as doomed can be.
I like Bob Dole, he’s a good man, are flight department used to fly him once in awhile on one of our Gulfstream jets and he was always gracious and even joked with us often on the tarmac before the limos whisked him away, he actually even knew our names, it’s to bad he was never POTUS, instead we got that asshole bill Clinton who I have no respect for even if he was an ex-potus
Probably one of the most mismanaged campaigns I have ever seen – should have been a lock for Dole but the GOP started letting the DNC control the dialogue and never regained it. All they did was react, and react poorly. It’s usually hard to unseat a sitting President for that second term absent a huge scandal a la Watergate) but it should have been possible then.
I remember another bit of ‘why is the media so laudatory’ evidence…I remember a Congressional candidate in El Paso who said “The only difference between Bush and a Democrat is that he says he is a Republican.” By modern standards Bush was a centrist D.
Let’s not forget that big-eared loudmouth siphoned just enough of the vote away to give us four more years of “Blowjob Willie”, ditto with the first four years of him.
Those who were in WWII are getting few, I salute you two and your deeds that have done, Mr. President may you find Barbara and those you served with on the other side.

God Bless Richard Overton, 112 years old, of Texas, who served during WWII. He is still with us.
God Bless this young man, 18 years old, Andy Fancher of Duncanville, Texas, who has devoted half his life to honoring WWII combat veterans.
So far, he has interviewed and documented the stories of 80 veterans on his “Andy Fancher Presents” Youtube channel:
“Meet Andy Fancher, Teenaged Patriot, YouTube Host:

I can think of one WWII vet here that is still alive but unfortunately I have never been in a situation to be able to sit and talk to him. Have a vast bunch of relatives and at least I know of 3 that served in that war, all are gone now and the one that did say a little had me stumped for many years as he was in the USAAF in B-17’s and all I really heard was when they moved in land thru Italy is that when it was time to move forward they would load him and the crew and fly to next landing site and then he would be left there at base when they flew combat missions. Finally got to see inside a B-17 a few years ago and was suddenly easy to figure out. Although you might be skinny, there is not one place for someone that is 6 ft 2 in to be when you are flying combat missions.
For some reason when I saw this last night it made my eyes water a little…one brother warrior saluting the final rest of another. One man who survived an artillery shell blast leaving him crippled for life and another man who lost his two crewman and was rescued by a submarine, both going on to serve their nations in so many ways.
Growing up in the sixties everyone I knew over the age of 40 was a WW2 vet, so many uncles of mine and family friends. And those younger than 40 were often Korean War vets.
Their sons would go to Vietnam and there would be a sea change in nation from that point onward.
I miss those guys, all in my family are dead. There’s one family friend left and he’s getting pretty feeble along with my Korean war vet father in law whose days are numbered.
As Doc pointed out above, we are going from men like these to addle pated nitwits thinking they can tax their way out of a 40 trillion dollar plan to give everyone free shit…makes me wonder what happens 40 years out to this nation. I can only hope those serving now serve as politicians and bring some semblance of fiscal sanity back to the government.

My neighbors were a P47 pilot, Pearl Harbor survivor, B-17 gunner and the guy that maintained the air conditioning on the Hornet during the Doolittle raid. I joined them for drinks at the VFW and I was welcomed as a peer but felt so much smaller than them.
They are all gone now.
You could tell that he did not like having to be assisted in his effort, but he was determined to offer the proper respect no matter what it took to do so. THAT is what honor looks like.
Sure got dusty all of the sudden.
Rest In Peace, Mr President.
My ex wife’s grandfather served on the South Dakota in WWII. Helped fish Bush out of the drink when he went in the Pacific. Was on the field during a Saints game unfurling the flag during a pregame in 06 or so and ran into him again. Shared a short chat with him and told him about being on the same ship at the same time. They both shared a laugh about it. God speed George and God Speed Lonnie. Both are on the other side now. My ex was a bitch, but Lonnie….HE was a man. Former Navy, Marine, and Air Force. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Rest Easy
Bob Dole is quite a man. Respect earned and given.
Thanks, Ex.
You’re welcome, Ed.
Damn allergies acting up again. Calm winds and trailing seas Mr. President.
Bob Dole standing to salute, watching George Jr. hold back tears, and the service dog Sully in front of President Bush’s coffin were incredible poignant moments this week.
