Sometimes I Just Go Full Potato
This article from the Atlantic back in May this year should be a must read for any conservative and for any middle-of-the-road liberal whose centrist views are angrily disputed by the so-called progressives, dismissed as alt-right and insulted by those people into moving further to the right of center.
The author’s view is that the progressive’s screamingly angry, hyperemotional rhetoric and violent physical responses to an opposing view of even the mildest sort drives people away from them, who would otherwise continue to embrace a slightly progressive left of center stance.
This is what I have been saying repeatedly: the more these tantrum-throwing, foul-mouthed, ghoulish, violent zombies attack people openly, as they are doing now, the more they will drive the moderate centrist liberals to the right hand side of the political pendulum.
By engaging in this public surge and display of unfettered hate – for there is no other name for it – they are revealing themselves for what they really are: extreme radicals and bullies willing to do anything, including burn down the house while you are in it, to get what they want. They do not believe society’s laws and rules apply to them, because they regularly and intentionally (or stupidly) misinterpret the Law of the Land. They are encouraged to do so, and to traipse as close to the edge of anarchy as possible to get what they want, with no thought to the consequences.
Now we’re seeing some results of that behavior in Doxxing Boy’s arrest, indictment, and soon-to-be trial and (we hope) conviction and vacation in a federal prison with some truly dangerous people as neighbors, as well as the Canadian soyboy salon ex-employee who kicked a woman at a prolife rally and is now in jail. The list of crass, crude and vulgar things sent and said to members of Congress in Cong Scalise’s essay demonstrates clearly that this bunch of screaming howler monkeys are not, and may never be, civilized in any way at all.
There are two kinds of millennials: one kind is the lamebrained idiots who climb the steps of the Supreme Court building and pound on the doors, screaming like demented zombies. I’d guess that if they had time to spend a week in Washington, haunting the SCOTUS hearings and screaming like banshees when they are removed, they don’t have jobs that they’re worried about losing.
The other type of millennial is the kind that has high-paying jobs in finance, technology, engineering, etc., is businesslike about running a household, knows exactly what they want in the way of housing and where they want to live, per the response to questions about them from realtors who are seeing a buying population growing in that group. They want families, not empty homes. They want “stuff”, not grungy jeans. Yes, they want clean spaces and crime-free streets, but don’t we all? It isn’t about bicycle paths. It’s about safety for kids on a hike in the forest preserve, and schools where their kids learn something besides “mommy was my daddy and it’s okay”.
These people are the mid-center centrist liberals whose views are attacked by those others, those loud-mouthed, hate-spewing progressives who label them alt-right for daring to be so centrist.
This population group will be future conservatives, given enough time and enough hatred from the radical progressives that despise them. And there are, frankly, more of them than there are of the other type.
The Atlantic article is not a short read. It will take some time on your part, but it is worth your time to read it. You may not agree with some of the author’s specific points, particularly in regard to Bush and Obama and their reservations about using terms like “radical Islam terrorists”, which is to be expected.
But the gist of it holds true. The so-called progressives are doing far more damage to themselves than any amount of argument from us could hope to produce. Fix yourself a pot of coffee or tea, get some snacky foods on a plate, and read it start to finish.

There’s an old saying that goes “A leftist is just someone who hasn’t been mugged”.
I agree with that, because I’ve seen it happen in real life. A friend of mine, who, for whatever reason, was always a staunch leftist, got mugged last year.
Now, he’s a member of “Gun Owners of Maine”, carries concealed, and has registered as a member of the GOP.
Thank you! There is a cure for everything.
Not always.
Plenty of libs excuse their attackers.
Remember that dude from the NYC subway?
The piece is premised on the presumed correctness of previous administrations that avoided referring to “Muslim” terrorists for fear of alienating Islam. Their concern was that doing otherwise would create the appearance that the West was opposing or targeting Islam generally and not terrorists specifically. This strategy is then paralleled to the Left’s lumping all conservatives together as alt-right types, neo-Nazis and fascists. When this is done, the author says, conservatives who are none of those things are less inclined to support the Left’s agenda, just as ordinary, peaceful Muslims would be less inclined to support the West’s efforts against terrorism and might, instead, actively support the terrorists. Moreover, conservatives who were otherwise not bigoted become so.
There is much that I disagree with in his piece, not the least of which is his faulty parallel. He makes no mention of the absurd levels to which the West took avoidance of the “Muslim” terrorist label, many times to the point of avoiding the word terrorism itself. Between blaming a non-Muslim’s film for the Benghazi attack, to the DHS use of white males in terrorist-awareness films, to suggesting that workplace violence explained more than a few terrorists attacks, the administration of President Red Line took the strategy to avoid “Muslim” to a laughable and ridiculous level.
I am a conservative and the Left is my country’s domestic enemy because it would destroy constitutionalism and representative democracy. I am not some ignorant camel driver who would be swayed one way or another by a change in tactics by the Left, and it is my sincere belief that few true conservatives would be either. I prefer that the Left continue to fly its colors and not hide them, as it did for so long, to work behind the scenes to undercut our nation.
There’s another recent Atlantic story about studies which have apparently shown that political correctness is supported by only about 20 percent of the U.S. population. The demographics of that group consist primarily of wealthy white liberals.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/large-majorities-dislike-political-correctness/572581/
All the other income, racial, and political groups seem to share a general dislike of the sort of smarmy PC sanctions against being able to engage in non-PC discussions. Which raises an interesting question: How did 20 percent of the population somehow manage to gain a level of control over the acceptable conversation for the other 80 percent?
Wag the dog…
Maybe it’s 20 percent that get the most attention because they demand it?
The author is a liberal, so his view of bodaprez is colored by that, but he doesn’t seem to have been hit with the ‘messianic haze’ that afflicted others.
Since that article was written before the most recent episodes of screaming brats throwing their weight around, I will be interested to see if he is still a quasi-conservative liberal after the midterm elections have come and gone.
That demographic also (mostly) belongs to the Main Stream Media. The same MSM that portrays Trump in a negative light some 92% of the time.

The unhinged and increasingly violent Left is comprised of many factions, each with its own objectives. To me, it is reminiscent of communism in its numerous types and variety. At the end of the day, though, each is communist. The Kavanaugh hearings congealed many on the Left, because a more conservative justice is anathema to them all. The Left showed what lengths it is willing to go against what it deems to be a common enemy. The charges leveled against then-nominee Kavanaugh were ridiculous. The presumption of innocence, a fundamental mainstay within American jurisprudence was cast aside. The US Senate became a stage for screeching, foul-mouthed, rude, indecent, and ugly voices. Justice Kavanaugh was called a serial rapist and Senmator Collins an apologist for a rapist. And most of us just shook our heads at the collective idiocy and now have moved on to other issues and concerns, such as making a living. Well, the Left merely lost its rallying objective de jour. Its goal remains intact. The Left has accomplished much in recent decades and is now open about such things as socialism that it used to deny most strongly, lest it be seen as a friend of the communist and the enemy of our Republic and our economic system. It is both of those things. Vote.
I like how many of our proglodyte/crypto-communists have dropped their masks and now admit that Karl Marx and company are their superheroes. But Democratic Socialism is still code for I want a single party communist dictatorship of the proletariat.
Yes it is and that is precisely what we’re suffering: Democratic Socialists. I encourage everyone who is unfamiliar with them to read up on them, starting with their website. Today’s Democrats are truly Democratic Socialists, whether they know it or not and whether those who know it admit it or not. Grandma certainly doesn’t know it. She thinks that since the D party was good enough for FDR and Truman back when, it’s good enough for her today. Interestingly, RINOs are now most like the old Democrats were. Fancy that.
TL,DR.
(Too long, didn’t read, for you old timers)
The older I get the more convinced I am that Heinlein was right when he said the labels don’t really matter, that humanity divides into a couple of groups. The first group regardless of progressive, conservative, religious, atheist, Democrat, or Republican seeks to control the lives of others often from a well intentioned set of high ideals. The second group consists largely of surly curmudgeons who are lacking in trust and altruism, but in the end that second group are far better neighbors than the first group. When I see people who claim to love freedom voting for big government Republicans or big government Democrats, I realize the difference is largely without distinction because big government spends big money and taxes me a thousand different ways today. Until we the people start demanding a smaller government we’re going to continue to be what the government see us as, sheep to be herded by the sheep dogs while their owners (the government) can continue to fleece them on a regular basis. The government has done such a good job of it they’ve even convinced the police they are sheep dogs and the police buy into that thinking they are the sheep’s protectors on behalf of the sheep. Never realizing the insulting nature of the analogy and their complicity in the continuing decline of a once free society into wage and tax slaves on the government plantation. What are you free to do these days? I mean truly free to do? You can’t buy anything without the government getting a cut, if you buy a car you pay several times for permission to keep it with a sales tax, an excise (property) tax, and yearly inspection or registration fees…you can’t collect rainwater falling on your own fucking property in some states without the government fining or arresting you, you can’t own a dog or a cat without permission, you can’t shoot a deer on your own property, or catch a fish without permission, you can’t even change the size of the window openings on your property without a government fee and a… Read more »
Spot on VOV.
Hard to get happy after that one. What you say is true, VOV, and cannot be contradicted, not by a rational person. Gov’t is ubiquitous and cannot be escaped completely. Even in death, we may be dug up and replanted to make way for a new road or our survivors fined for spreading our ashes where they should not have spread them. But…and there’s always a but…there are real choices to be had come election day. If ever that was in doubt, just look at 2016. Was a vote for Trump the same as a vote for the Bitch of Benghazi? Is Kavanaugh on the court likely to be the same as Ginsburg on the court? Change can be effected because of many of the freedoms we do enjoy. Don’t give up the ship. It’s still afloat.
Those votes are indeed far different, that said it’s always important to remember that the lesser of two evils is still an evil.
We’ll see what Kavanaugh turns out to be. I hope he truly returns to being a strict constitutionalist who believes in the sanctity of the Bill of Rights and that the individual should always be protected from the tyranny of the majority. His part in writing the Patriot Act in the name of our safety leads me to believe I’ve no good reason to expect him to be a strict constitutionalist, but I will gladly be proven wrong should it go that way.
The one freedom we still have that a great many don’t care about is that freedom to cast a vote. A bit of a shame more don’t choose to exercise it with some knowledge. There’s a reason Congress’s approvals are in the low teens but 95% get re-elected and it’s not just because most of our fellow Americans are idiots.
I did see a funny bumper sticker though, it did make me laugh….
“I always thought we all had a basic understanding of science until I joined Facebook”
“…most of our fellow Americans are idiots.” Brother, if that ain’t the truth. It’s the half-sawed-through leg of a representative democracy’s table. I admit that if I could, I would encourage many people not to vote at all and am quite happy to see that most Americans don’t, either b/c of disinterest or b/c of ineligibility. In off-year elections, the power of my single vote increases 100 fold, at least. I very much like that.
Uh, that’s a good point. The less people that vote the more my vote counts.
Brilliant.
The bottom line for these progtards (including their screeching howler monkeys, as PH2 likes to call them) is they want absolute political power so their government/crypto-dictatorship can control every aspect of our lives for their version of “the greater good.”
The “greater good” would be to elect them, lock them up in a basement, and let them out at the end of their term.
The US Constitution is the simplest set of laws available. It’s everything that has followed since it was written that fiddled with it and turned it on its head.
